‘JournoList’ E-mails Show Media Plotting to Kill Stories about Reverend Jeremiah Wright: Daily Caller
by PubliusJournoList scandal is back and prepare for it to be a driving force in the news for quite some time. The Daily Caller published an article tonight indicating they’ve obtained emails from the JournoList and the initial details are as damning as we expected when the list-serv, founded by the Washington Post’s Ezra Klein in 2007, surfaced with the Dave Weigel kerfuffle last month.
Snippets from the article below, but make sure to read the whole thing at the Daily Caller and return to Big Journalism early and often as we unpack the details that emerge and track the fallout from this seminal event in the history of left-wing media bias. It’s unclear exactly what the Daily Caller has, but there’s certainly no indication from this article they’ve already laid all their cards out on the table.

According to records obtained by The Daily Caller, at several points during the 2008 presidential campaign a group of liberal journalists took radical steps to protect their favored candidate. Employees of news organizations including Time, Politico, the Huffington Post, the Baltimore Sun, the Guardian, Salon and the New Republic participated in outpourings of anger over how Obama had been treated in the media, and in some cases plotted to fix the damage.
In one instance, Spencer Ackerman of the Washington Independent urged his colleagues to deflect attention from Obama’s relationship with Wright by changing the subject. Pick one of Obama’s conservative critics, Ackerman wrote, “Fred Barnes, Karl Rove, who cares — and call them racists.”

Jeremiah Wright was back in the news after making a series of media appearances. At the National Press Club, Wright claimed Obama had only repudiated his beliefs for “political reasons.” Wright also reiterated his charge that the U.S. federal government had created AIDS as a means of committing genocide against African Americans.
It was another crisis, and members of Journolist again rose to help Obama.
Chris Hayes of the Nation posted on April 29, 2008, urging his colleagues to ignore Wright. Hayes directed his message to “particularly those in the ostensible mainstream media” who were members of the list…
…Katha Pollitt – Hayes’s colleague at the Nation – didn’t disagree on principle, though she did sound weary of the propaganda. “I hear you. but I am really tired of defending the indefensible. The people who attacked Clinton on Monica were prissy and ridiculous, but let me tell you it was no fun, as a feminist and a woman, waving aside as politically irrelevant and part of the vast rightwing conspiracy Paula, Monica, Kathleen, Juanita,” Pollitt said.
“Part of me doesn’t like this shit either,” agreed Spencer Ackerman, then of the Washington Independent. “But what I like less is being governed by racists and warmongers and criminals.”
Ackerman went on:
I do not endorse a Popular Front, nor do I think you need to. It’s not necessary to jump to Wright-qua-Wright’s defense. What is necessary is to raise the cost on the right of going after the left. In other words, find a rightwinger’s [sic] and smash it through a plate-glass window. Take a snapshot of the bleeding mess and send it out in a Christmas card to let the right know that it needs to live in a state of constant fear. Obviously I mean this rhetorically.
And I think this threads the needle. If the right forces us all to either defend Wright or tear him down, no matter what we choose, we lose the game they’ve put upon us. Instead, take one of them — Fred Barnes, Karl Rove, who cares — and call them racists. Ask: why do they have such a deep-seated problem with a black politician who unites the country? What lurks behind those problems? This makes *them* sputter with rage, which in turn leads to overreaction and self-destruction.

Just when you think you were being paranoid, you learn they really are out to get you, so to speak. This manages to be both shocking and unsurprising.
Speaking of "killing", I just saw on the Glenn Beck show that the Obama administration, which refuses to acknowledge a war on terror, refuses to acknowledge Islamofascist enemies, refuses to acknowledge jihad.,and relentessly criticized Bush wiretaps as offenses on civil liberties in GWOT,..but does manage to borrow and spend taxpayer dollars to keep Gitmo detainees watching the latest DVDs on flat-panel screens…this same administration is apparently fine with KILLING American citizens designated as terrorists — and this without a trial of any sort.
What's wrong with this picture.
This news discussed on MSNBC, not exactly a radical right-wing channel.

Never mind. I'm sure if this was really news, MSM would sound the alarm, just like they did with Bush wiretaps, right? </sarc>
Sorry, just me being paranoid again…
I can't even remember when, politics got the heads up, to be this blatantly one sided and dirty! ?? I realize that most people (used to) assume that the Democrats were for the working man and woman…my parents did, but I'm pretty sure that were they here today, they would change parties…from the self-righteous, hate mongering Democrats, and the sometime lying, spineless Republicans to Independent …..just so as not to be labeled!!
This non-ethical journalism is getting too low life….it's becoming really difficult to know what is real and what is the fiction of some a$$holes imagination…
Methinks Bill Clinton is about to have to eat his words about the "vast right wing conspiracy".
This is just so out of control. Things will only get worse. I'm just waiting for the wrong Liberal to get thrown under the bus and bring forth all kinds of damning info. on this Liberal administration.
Well, now we see why many Republicans have not stood up for what is Right. They have been bullied and intimidated; they did not have the strength to be political martyrs in a game they could not win.
The implosion would be fun to watch if it happens. Unfortunately, this is just the tip top tiny tip of the iceberg. The media is already spinning the damage control in high gear. There will be a half dozen scapegoats/sacrificial calves and then they'll bury it and move on. These aren't the droids you're looking for. Move along, nothing here to see, people. /sarc
Like always with the leftist.. The end justifies the mean…
It is all about agenda..
Wow!!!!!!!!
If an American citizen is tromping around the desert with alongside his Al Queda or Taliban buddies, his citizenship shouldn't prevent him from catching a bomb from a predator drone.
*Shrugs* Didn't know it was this organized, but the media favoring Democrats is a longstanding phenomena.
They're referring to the assassination order on Anwar al-Awlaki., who we're unlikely to find in a combat environment. Which, I'd sleep just fine if we greased him, but if it were Bush, you know they'd be losing their little moonbat minds.
Got my copy of an article that I feel is must reading:
"AMERICA'S RULING CLASS–AND THE PERILS OF REVOLUTION"
written by Angelo M. Codeville
in The American Spectator, Jul / Aug edition.
If only we can be that fortunate! After reading this article I felt sick to my stomach.
Thanks for giving the writer and source. I heard Rush read part of this yesterday but missed the name of the writer and source. What I heard was excellent!
I knew it!
There is a vast left wing conspiracy!
Traditional media is dead. Without an active unbiased press, it's the beginning of the end of our nation as we know it.
Imagine all of the thuggish thinking on Journolist backed with real political power and the ability to really hurt or kill people and you'll understand why glorious left-wing revolutions have a tendency to leave millions dead. They are all arguing that the ends justify the means, even when they know the means are unethical.
There is a generational gap, but social media is right behind to replace it, and will be more effective. This is one problem that will be solved in time.
Humble pie tastes nasty.
This story is sending chills up my leg…
The useful idiots are being exposed at an alarming rate now,oh no,how will they spin this? They won't,they will ignore it with the hopes that it goes away.Good luck with that!
I believed that the media bias was unintentional. I believed that they did not cover certain stories simply because their liberal viewpoints did not let them understand their importance. I HAVE BEEN NIEVE!
These communications make it clear that they understand the importance of damaging stories against liberal but they choose not to cover it. And as at least one person indicates, they seek to distract by accusing conservatives as racist! (Sound familar Tea-party?)
It is clear the liberals have declared war and that they will say anything, make any charge, to hurt conservatives (or anything damaging to the liberal view)
To me, this explains why the recent news that uncovered that Fannie/Freddie had provided more funding for subprime loans than previously thought. It turns out they provided funding for 54% of subprime loans (70% of subprime in 2007 alone) . They can't let people know just how bad the government can bungle things. Same for the government's response to the recent oil spill.
This sort of journolism redefines the term 'poison pen'.
No shame, no honor, no intelligence….their parents must be sooooo proud.
This is the most wonderful news I've heard in a very long time. Thank you Andrew. Folks like you and Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh give me hope yet. I hope this stays front and center right up until the November elections. Hopefully enough people will hear it and get out to vote for the Conservative, Tea Party candidate, who may or may not be a Republican. We are so close to losing our great country. This just may be the one that turns the tide at long last.
Again, thank you so much. You are truly a Great American.
Actually . . .
I kind of like this.
Since Obama is so bound and determined to pass laws requiring identification of political affiliation, this would be evidence that all those people are functioning as political activists, and they would have to identify all of their articles as direct political campaigning.
Never mind irony, that is all the way into just desserts.
Certainly the new electronic media is the future, but middle America still relies on their newspapers and the nightly news to get their information. The question is, what will come first, a government that finds a way to impose by vote, or edict, the fairness doctrine, or the new media having a dominant status over the old traditional media. Add into this that the traditional media has finally busted out of their charade and openly and blatantly show their liberal bias, we are in danger either way.
How much does the democratic party pay these journalists, anyway?
Al Queda (the group of which Anwar is a member) has training camps in Yemen and we've bombed those camps, so while we haven't staged an invasion, I'd say its a battleground. As in Afghanistan, rough territory and hostile locals make things tougher for us and easier for terrorists.
I'm not concerned for al-Awlaki's welfare either. It is odd that the Obama administration wrings hands over sensitivies of Muslim combatants and civil liberties of non-citizen combatants at Gitmo. But offing an American without a trial is not much cause for discussion. The silence of the left is much different than the non-stop clamoring over mere Bush wiretaps of calls from terrorists abroad. More than anything, I don't trust the Obama administration with this kind of discretion.
I support the war on terror no matter who is president.
Anwar's involvement with Al Queda is not in doubt and he is hiding in an inaccessible area. If a drone catches sight of him, he should be killed just like any other terrorist.
I agree that liberals would be deeply upset if Bush were doing this, but I don't see that as a reason for conservatives to take their place as advocates for half-measures in the war on terror.
So when Obama decides to start using drone strikes against domestic groups who present a terrorist threat, like say . . . I don't know . . . "people who refer to the Constitution" or somesuch, without trials, or grand jury indictments, or anything, you are okay with that?
Its not like the Constitution needs to mean something all of the time or anything . . .
Of course not. Domestic drone strikes against tea partiers or any other loyal citizens critical of the administration are very different from foreign strikes on battlefields against Al Queda members who happen to hold citizenship.
Honestly, I have tremendous respect for the US military, so being murdered in my bed by US soldiers isn't something that keeps me up nights no matter who the CiC is.
I heard this on Glenn Beck this morning and it more than chap's my hide.
Of course, it's all rhetorical. Yeah, right. Can you imagine if they caught right-wing journalists (or anyone right wing) talking like that! OMG! They'd be foaming at the mouth.
Thank you again, Andrew and Company, for shedding light on the cockroaches. Sunlight really is the best disinfectant.
Disgusting. But not surprising.
And here's the thing: At first I thought listening to too much Glenn Beck would turn me into a conspiracy theorist like The Lone Gunmen on X-Files. I don't like conspiracy theories in general because the theorists always fall back on theh "Oh, that's what they want you to think." Or "They're hiding the evidence!" It just leads you into circles and circles of arguments and pretty much you wind up with a tinfoil hat on in your underwear in your basement.
But little by little, things that have been said are being corroborated over and over again.
Unfortunately, it doesn't make me feel better.
Sure – to you.
To Obama?
Pelosi?
Various other frenzied ideologues in the government?
And who says the military would do it? That's what they have czars with their civlian security forcs or whatnot for.
We're getting deep into hypotheticals here. Right now my deep problem with the War on Terror is that we are being too gentle with the detainees. If other problems crop up, my stance will change accordingly.
I agree with you in general, but…something does not square when the Obama administration refuses to acknowledge GWOT, or IslamoFascists, or jihad, and initially referred to terrorist attacks as "man-made catastrophes". Check out videos of Holder and Brennan on YouTube. They publicly twist themselves into human pretzels rather than mouth "war on terror" in the same breath with "radical Muslims" or "jihad". But killing Americans designated as terrorists without trial…they are all over that one, no problemo. There is some contradiction there.
The fact that Obama and his associates are so eager to label Tea Party activists as borderline Timothy McVeigh radicals does not inspire confidence.
When you provide an individual or group with the right to arbitrarily kill American citizens, without accountability to anyone, it's not a good situation, and minimally the honesty, integrity, motives and character of those involved must be considered. Need I say more?
That's exactly the point!
The folks who are all about being too gentle on detainees are the SAME FOLKS who are fine with killing Americans whom they decide to designate as terrorists.
Cognitive dissonance anyone?
Another dirty little secret hiding in plain sight thanks to MSM Two architects of the FannieFreddie debacle that were instrumental in nearly vaporizing the global financial system in 2008 were Frank and Dodd.
As most here know, these same two geniuses are behind the financial "reform" bill that Obama is about to sign, that has little to do with real financial reform, NOTHING to do with Fannie/Freddie and is mostly about enlarging government power and instituionalizing bailouts as far as the eye can see.
Congressional mandating of loans by Fannie/Freddie/etc. to undeserving borrowers are something to keep in mind as the Democrats repeat their mantra about Obama inheriting a fiscal nightmare, and not wanting to go backward to the policies that caused all the trouble. They're not going backward to those policies. They own those destructive policies and are enlarging on them as fast as they can.
*looks around*
Maybe I'm confused, but I thought this was a blog about not trusting government with powers above and beyond the Constitution?
You know, Ben Franklin, trading freedom for security and all that jazz.
As for being gentle with the detainees, wander over to Big Peace and see my post regarding their rights and protections under the Geneva Conventions. Just because I do not trust Obama, or any President, issuing hit extra-legal hit orders on American citizens, no matter how blatant their treason and support for terrorism are, does not mean I consider the unlawful combatants we have in custody to have anything even vaguely resembling the status, rights, and protections of lawful combatants or protected civilians.
Exactly.
I wouldn't trust the President, or Congress, with such power in general. (Not to mention that bit about no bills of attainder in the Constitution specifically prohibiting it anyway.)
But trusting this President and Congress with it specifically?
"No" does not begin to cover it.
Wright spoke about what God says happens to nations who turn from God…Fox never played the complete quote "GD America for as long as she acts like she is God and she is supreme." Did Fox News tell you that Wright was a Navy Medic at Bethesda Naval Hospital and helped save President Johnson's life after his heart attack? Did you know the 2nd biggest shareholder in Fox News is the Saudi prince who blamed 9/11 on America becuase we support Israel? You Fox News viewers are being duped by a foreign owned media organization that spreads lies to try and create a class war among Americans.
