Government Created 10x More Jobs than Private Sector in May

A wave of census hiring lifted payrolls by 431,000 in May, but job creation by private companies grew at the slowest pace since the start of the year. The unemployment rate dipped to 9.7 percent as people gave up searching for work.
The Labor Department’s new employment snapshot released Friday suggested that outside of the burst of hiring of temporary census workers by the federal government many private employers are wary of bulking up their work forces.
That indicates the economic recovery may not bring relief fast enough for millions of Americans who are unemployed.
Virtually all the job creation in May came from the hiring of 411,000 census workers. Such hiring peaked in May and will begin tailing off in June.
By contrast, hiring by private employers, the backbone of the economy, slowed sharply. They added just 41,000 jobs, down from 218,000 in April and the fewest since January.
The unemployment rate, which is derived from a separate survey than the payroll figures, fell to 9.7 percent from 9.9 percent. The dip partly reflected 322,000 people leaving the labor force for a variety of reasons.
All told, 15 million people were unemployed in May.
Counting people who have given up looking for work and part-timers who would rather be working full time, the “underemployment” rate fell to 16.6 percent in May from 17.1 percent in April. Even with the drop, the high underemployment figure shows how difficult it is for jobseekers to find work.
Employers across a range of industries last month added jobs at a slower pace—or cut them. Factories, professional and business services, leisure and hospitality companies, and education and health care firms all slowed hiring. Financial services, construction companies and retailers all pared jobs. Government, however, led the way in hiring, adding a whopping 390,000 positions last month.

Wow. All I can say. This is the harbinger of tough times ahead. The more souls that pursue the government dollar, opposed to pursuing their own happiness the bigger the bill society pays later. World Wars happen because enough people would rather take something that they need rather then work for it. With these numb nuts in the White House I wonder if anyone will be left to even write the history book that blames them for it.
i guess to make obama look good, he needs to hire 400,000 workers every month, who cares where we will get the money from. also, i don't remember clinton bragging about doing the same thing, and i am no fan of clinton. i do remember when george bush had unemployment numbers under 5 or 6 percent, we were told how bad the employment numbers were, and now with obama, we all should celebrate it's only 9.7 now. i was going to have a party, but my unemployed neighbors didn't have money to party with.

Good grief – If I got A's in both my high school and college economics classes – and I know that this is a stupid way to solve our economic issues – surely there is ONE person in that administration who knows the solution. Surely, right?
Well, actually Mr. Knoxs, sometimes the answer is no. If you are bidding government work, you often times are required to hire a certain percentage of "minority" subcontractors.
This had a wonderful effect in Chicago, some of the worst minority requirements in the country.

If 90% of jobs created are government jobs, many being temporary Census worker jobs, and there is videotaped evidence suggesting that salary dollars are routinely distributed for work not performed, that sounds kind of relevant. Reason # 8,197 why big government stiumulus spending is equivalent to pouring money down a rat hole.

I was out of work for thee months – 16yrs with the same company (laid off) … Then I found work .. it is what I want to do .. nah but I am keeping my house and feeding the kids ….
So why all the resentment towards people who are going to find themselves laid off in a few months? I'm sure for many of them becoming a housewife is not an option.
He's made quite a few media types admit they've dropped the ball on stories, even if they didn't admit their bias, their audience knew it and ratings reflected it. They now have to at least show some responsibility to cover stories they don't want to, and that's a pretty major change.

1) we don't make anything
2) we can't make anything because of oppressive goverment regulations and unions
3) the few companies that can make things are being sued and taxed to death
4) the rest of the world can't/won't buy what little is left

6) the ones that can read want everything handed to them, have no respect and no clue as to what an honest day's work is or integrity.

That's quite a stretch. He showed the same instance of impropriety over and over and over again, enough so that it was believable, even to the left, that the corruption was systemic and simply a bad apple or two.

But that never would have happened had O'keefe not released them in the manner that he did, holding back until the lies Bertha Lewis and ACORN told could bury themselves without his help.

With this administration it's hard to say that with certainty. These Census Bureau workers may become permanent government employees and then become organized under the likes of SEIU.

Can anybody find any data on the percentage make up of new hires, what % are caucassian, African American, Mexican or other? Is it just me or does it seem like all the new gov't hires are minority? It seems in order to be fair, this number ought to resemble the actual percentage in society.

Where exactly do the unemployment numbers come from? Does 9.7% unemployment mean that 9.7% of the eligible workforce is drawing unemployemnt benefits? Or that no shyt 9.7% of the eligible workforce is out of work? If it is the former, I think the numbers are GROSSLY underreported.
It's all part of the dream team's propaganda. They're hoping we'll buy off on the changey thing.

Just ridiculous that we would need 500,000 or so part time Census workers in fht first place. Majority of people just receive the form, fill it out, and simply mail it back. The private sector is angered and frustrated that Federal Government workers get higher pay and benefits. The private sector pays the salary and benefits for the Feds, so why should they get 30-40% higher pay? Government needs severe cutbacks – we cannot afford what is there anymore.
Will all these people be eligible for unemployment benefits once they are released? How is this going to help the deficit?
Oddly enough, any economics professor will tell you that anything over 6% unemployment is in the danger zone. So, I'm not seeing how the 8% figure was supposed to comfort us in the first place. We are well above even that number right now. "The worst is behind us"? Really, Mr. President? Who exactly are you getting your information from?

Ten years ago, the number of temporary census jobs plunged 225,000 in June and then further plunged for the 3 months thereafter. Expect the same negative pattern in 2010. The Academicians who write the history books generally are people who have spent their entire lives living (resentfully) off a large institution that they wish were more generous. Let's see. I had a letter sent to my house to tell me to expect the Census. Then 3 census documents show up. I fill out one and throw the rest out. TODAY…An agent come knocking on my door. On a —-ing Sunday of all days!!! No follow up letter, warning that an agent may show…I told him that i mailed it back. He says they never got it, I said thats the USPS's problem not mine. I ask him for ID, he has none on him. He actually tried to step into my home without my consent, i had no choice but to kick him out…….What a joke…
