O’Keefe Census Video Sting Forces Bureau Rule Changes

The Census Bureau has made some changes to its hiring and security procedures after reports that a convicted sex offender was hired to go door-to-door in New Jersey and an undercover video surfaced showing Census supervisors paying workers for hours they did not work.
“No hire will be allowed into the field without passing a fingerprint process,” Census Director Robert Groves said at a briefing Wednesday. “Any name check that discovers a mismatch between name, date of birth, sex, or Social Security number … will stop processing of applicant.”…
Conservative activist James O’Keefe, best known for an undercover video showing ACORN (Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now) counselors appearing to encourage him to hide a prostitution venture to get housing money, released another video this week. This one shows O’Keefe at two New Jersey Census offices where he was hired and took a two-day training course. O’Keefe quit after working 16 hours but was paid for 19.5 hours. The video also shows supervisors giving 70-minute paid lunch breaks — 40 minutes longer than allotted.
“At the time of training, we expect each day to be an 8-hour day,” Groves said…

Thank you to James,Andrew,and Glenn.I really could go on a few pages on how much I appreciate what u guys do for me,my family,and America.I admire your courage for speaking truth.I think its one of the very most important foundations for anything.A marriage,friendship,business,coworker,customer,and the relationship between gov and people.Nothing prospers too much or last too long in pools of deceit and deception.Thats why any sane intelligent person who has done just a little homework would realize this administration is just ole skool mafia through and through.Well except for their stupidity and incompetence in many areas.Anyway they will not get trust back for many many years imo.I think thats all most people want.The truth and a chance to discuss it and the majority should win.Its not like that at all anymore and hasnt been for decade(s) but this gang takes the cake…err I mean our cake.

I've been trying to research something about the Gulf Oil Spill….I'll call it "Rumor Control".
It seems that Pres Bush/Cheney signed a contract with BP to provide 8 Emergency Fire-Boom ships in case of drilling accidents. They would work to contain the oil, and then burn it off.
The Democrat Congress did not provide funding for this project as they voted "NO!" Then, along comes Comrade OILY Obama and Salazar, who did not ask for funding of their contractual obligation, as they could use use a new crisis, which of course happened.

Wasn't all of the stuff that Groves talked about in the above article ALREADY supposed to be in place? I thought I had read/heard things about every employee being fingerprinted/screened already. So, he's promising things that have already been promised, but obviously not upheld? And he's trustworthy now because…?

Great. How much is THAT going to cost? I'm not saying they shouldn't be doing it, but I can hear the deficit going up as we speak. If it's like everything else the government does, we'll get charged for it and it will be spottily applied at best. I am not amused.
Sounds like the Census folks need to be unionized. SEIU goombahs would have picked up on O'Keefe like he was a foreign alien, instantly. What is completely incredibile is that he was able to get into their space using his real name. It just shows how well the liberal media suppressed the ACORN stories, the Census libs probably never even heard his name before. But, this story occurs in New Jersey, I think. Everything is possible in New Jersey, even their spectacular new governor. Governer Christie should offer O'Keefe a commendation!

In my case, the hiring manager, also the local LULAC President, explained that I wasn't picked because they were looking for someone with "more Spanish."

Results. And did you notice in the ABC interview O'keefe urged MORE FOLKS to do the same thing? Question is, do WE have that kind of courage. We all in our respective cities and states KNOW stuff goes on. Are we prepared to put our money and lives on the line and become citizen watchdogs?
Obviously after DECADES of promising to clean up their own act, administration after administration, we can pretty much assume gov't ain't gonna do squat. Question is, ARE WE? Are there any more O'Keefe's out there willing to take risks.
Are we really going to get involved at some level, join, get hired, or visit, wearing sound and camera equipment to "out" fraud and graft? O'Keefe laid down the challenge. He told Stephanopolis more and more citizens were going to follow his lead, hunt down graft wherever they could find it.

I can totally see dems rushing out a law FORBIDDING any sort of camera or listening equipment in gov't buildings or gov't agencies. With the FCC in his pocket, that one's a no brainer. Soon such covert snooping will carry a 20 year federal prison sentence and a million dollar fine, despite what is recorded.

Look for O'Keefe's name to "pop hot" now on every gov't database! The only thing that may prevent it would be the anti-discrimination laws re hiring for gov't jobs. That's why it would be a good thing if more folks followed James' lead…a few hundred O'Keefe's and we could probably bring the whole gov't job scam down, lol.
Too true, I am afraid. He's a marked guy and very clearly and enemy of the libs. Just look what they did to Joe the Plumber in Ohio. All he did was disagree with Obama and the next thing you know the power of Ohio was trying to savage him like a criminal. And the media seized on every deprecating innuendo they could glean. O'Keefe has put the HURTS on ACORN and now the Census. That story on Landrieu was as empty as empty gets, entirely trumped up but a valuable learning experience for him. The next time, if he fumbles, will not be so easy.
Good luck on getting those fingerprint results back from the FBI in less than 3 months. Wonder what the census worker does for those months while he can't work in the field?

Think what we could do if just one or two O'Keefe's signed up in EVERY PRECINCT in the country. They would make an AMAZING start on real gov't reform, from the local level up. Remember how we only a few years ago found out who "deep throat" really was in the Nixon scandal? Well can't citizen investigative reporters enjoy the same anonymity?
Are sources still able to be protected (except in a case of terrorism) or did the Patriot Act do away with that altogether? Not that the laws will stop Obama's pit bull Holder, but still, surely there are a few journalists out there who protect their sources.
I think the trick, if there is one, is what Stephanopulous was trying to get O'Keefe to say. That he was an "activist" NOT a journalist. The same 4th estate protections are not afforded to activists, but they are, I think still sacrosanct for "journalists." O'Keefe has journalist training in college whereas regular citizens may not, and therefore cannot claim that "source anonymity" if they "break" a story like here or another blog site….but if they hand over their file and documentation to a legitimate journalist…wonder if they're protected.
Before I begin I would like to state for the record – we do this about once every 2 months or so. I am capable of saying "no" to my 8 year old when she asks for a Happy Meal or just about anything else for that matter and we are not slaves to commercials that show images of Ronald McDonald. Oh, and we are neither obese nor ignorant of the need for healthy food choices.
OK so, I took my daughter to McDonald's for a Happy Meal about 2 weeks ago. While we were sitting down eating a group of Census workers were gathering for what appeared to be some sort of check-in with a district supervisor. One gentleman came in a little late and sat down with the supervisor to go through his list. She told him he needed to get their phone numbers and he told her he did when they were willing to give them out. She then told him if they won't give it to you you need to "look it up in the phone book and if it's not there you need to find it online." He said something to the effect of what if they're not right and she said, "don't worry about it they are all going to be getting a call."
This is nothing shocking, but it really irked the guy who was told to go digging for people's personal information that they didn't want to share and it really irked me too. If I don't want to give the federal gov't my phone # I thought that was my right.
If only we had "professional" journalists willing to do the thing that James O'Keefe is doing.
You know, I've been thinking a lot about this. My first instinct is that I like the guy. But my gut tells me that the kid is too young to have the kind of history behind him to warrant my unconditional support. So, I'm going to use the "wait and see" approach. Right now he's batting about .520 in my book. I'm going to cut him some slack due to his youth and inexperience, but I'm seeing a hint of petulance from him that concerns me.
The politicians are going to try to push a Massachusets type law regarding both audio and video, nation wide. Just watch.

The petulance probably does come from his age…he's still learning how to handle the slings and arrows. If he learns from his elders and mentors, like Breitbart, O'Keefe should grow up just fine.
I had considered that. Truthfully, I might act similarly if I had gone through what he has just endured. I still think it remains to be seen if he has the amount of integrity that everyone is attributing to him. At this point, he's still little more than a flash in the pan. Let's see if he grows into his reputation.
I've posted a few other comments "to" him about keeping his cool and not letting fame go to his head, so I do agree with your point.
What really gives me the willies is that the Census folks are sent to non-responders' homes, apparently to get MORE information than just what is asked on the form. Where the hell do they get questions like "Has anyone in your house moved into a mental institution"?

I don't think this is a problem with just the census bureau. Hopefully James will start stings in many government agencies. If you work for a government agency where you see this or other kinds of waste going on, make your own video. Let's start saving the taxpayers some money.

I don't know about all those distinctions between 'journalists' and those who write about news but I do take considerable resentment when story makers are able to hide their sources by dubious standards. As it is, I don't think anyone is well advised to confer any measure of integrity on those in media or so-called journalism. The days of journalistic integrity are gone. When someone tells me they are or want to be a journalist I want to be away from them, they seem dirty, of unclean values.
O'Keefe still has a learning curve, here's hoping that he also has some pragmatic mentors to keep him from burning the bridges to get back home. You gotta love a young bull though!! Go get 'em O'Keefe!
Well it seems this is how it's going to go down. People like James causing genuine change in the world of bloated, wasteful, deceptive government programs while being called a racist and a bigot for their efforts.

I'll go out on a limb and say that O'Keefe, Breitbart and some others are the reason why the FTC is trying to regulate journalism/internet. They/we are doing the job journalists were supposed to be doing, and it's getting done BETTER.
