AP: ‘Will this be Obama’s Katrina?’

WASHINGTON (AP) – Suddenly, everything changed.
For days, as an oil spill spread in the Gulf of Mexico, BP assured the government the plume was manageable, not catastrophic. Federal authorities were content to let the company handle the mess while keeping an eye on the operation.
But then government scientists realized the leak was five times larger than they had been led to believe, and days of lulling statistics and reassuring words gave way Thursday to an all-hands-on-deck emergency response. Now questions are sure to be raised about a self-policing system that trusted a commercial operator to take care of its own mishap even as it grew into a menace imperiling Gulf Coast nature and livelihoods from Florida to Texas.
The pivot point had come Wednesday night, at a news conference at an oil research center in the tiny community of Robert, La. That’s when the nation learned the earlier estimates were way off, and an additional leak had been found.
On Thursday, President Barack Obama set in motion a larger federal mobilization, pledging to deploy “every single available resource” to the area and ordering his disaster and environmental leaders to get down there in person. Only a few days after the Coast Guard assured the country there was “ample time” to protect the coast if oil came ashore, warnings from the government were newly alarming.
“I am frightened for the country, for the environment,” David Kennedy, assistant chief of the National Ocean Service at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, told The Associated Press. “This is a very, very big thing, and the efforts that are going to be required to do anything about it, especially if it continues on, are just mind-boggling.”
The political subtext of the crisis was clear and increasingly on people’s minds, whether from a federal office deploying oil-containment booms or from a Louisiana parish awaiting yet another sucker punch from the sea.

Well, you have to ask why did it take him all of 10 days to respond to this tragedy, which is obviously going to have a major environmental impact to our southern gulf coast line. Heads need to roll, but this clown is too occupied with stirring up trouble between the people over immigration, etc.

Bush had environmental elements and logistical problems during Katrina. Obama's problem is that he simply doesn't give a rats ass. He didn't address the spill in his weekly radio address. He was too busy attacking wall street. All week he's been busy attacking Arizona. I hope Obama sends a 'get well soon' card to the Pinal county deputy who was shot by an illegal immigrant today. He probably won't. I'm sure he thinks the deputy had it coming.

I agree with tempus fugit… since Cass has let a bunch of oil leases lapse and allowed no movement on others I immediately assumed this was sabotage in order for us to continue to be dependent on OPEC (Obamao's good buddies) and to force us into the "green jobs" like the ones which have been ever sooooo successful in Spain and which will immediately drive that which is left of our economy over a cliff. Color me suspicious.

Not so sure we won't ever know the cause. The rig has been located on the floor of the Gulf. It remains to be seen whether it can be raised, or at least inspected using video. Regardless, we need to know the cause, if possible, since after more than 60 years of drilling in the Gulf, this is the worst Gulf disaster ever and information that could prevent it from happening again is vital. It would be interesting to know if the survivors have been interviewed for whatever light they could shine on the explosion.

Considering that both Bush and Obama are slow to react to their situations, their numbers and timing to solve the problem are way off, and both situations will be blamed on something lame and unrelated later on. Like for Katrina, it was Global Warming, when in fact it was a catagory 3 hurricane and that New Orleans is below sealevel. As for the oil rig, they will blame drilling in gulf yet they wont expose the real cause of the fire and what outside source should really be fixed.
Although the biggest difference between Bush and Obama on this is one sad thing, the lame stream media has a love affair with liberals/progressives and give Obama the by while Bush is still being mocked for stuff he is no longer responsible for.

Ummmm- I'm open to alot of theories (including terrorism), but there is one problem with this report. On TV, the rig could clearly be seen burning on top- above deck. If the explosion had occured underneath, it would have sunk far more quickly and you would have seen flames from the water up. I just don't know about this one- sorry.

The oil spill is demonstrative of either one of two things. One, the incident truly surprised Mr. Obama and shows the incompetence and inexperience of the Obama administration. If so then look for the MSM to run a full court press of CYA for Mr. Obama. Two, Mr. Obama took a calculated risk of allowing the oil spill to continue and thus provide him with the ammunition to stop the expansion of offshore drilling or even end offshore drilling completely. Nothing is too low for Mr. Obama.
