by PubliusPresident Obama famously cancelled his planned trip to Asia to stay in DC for today’s health care vote. Canceling long-standing diplomatic missions should not be done lightly. In this video clip, Obama responds to gentle grilling from a reporter from Indonesian TV about his decision to scuttle the trip. His answers reveal a lot about what is happening on the Hill today.
Health care is the ‘most important domestic priority’? Really? To whom? Andy Stern, perhaps. And the leftist netroots, probably. And, we guess, certain Democrats on the Hill. But for the public at large?
If anything, for the public, defeating ObamaCare is the ‘most important domestic priority’.
We guess Obama will just have to bow a little deeper when he finally gets around to visiting Asia again.

Let's use round numbers. If 100 health pros – specialists, critical care nurses, pediatric specialists etc – who make an average of $200,000 per year and pay out 50% in tax quit 5 years early do they realize how much tax revenue will disappear forever?
If just 100 quit this year under that scenario then that is a loss of $50 million in tax revenue. $50,000,000 lost that will never come back from just 100 pros. What if 1000 pros under this scenario retire 10 years early?
Ohhh. So you say they will be replaced by new pros. Really? Staffing hospitals is not like staffing Whole Foods. And I'd bet a numbers of those pros would rather take their retirement, their IRAs and spend their future precious few years in a garden. On a ranch. Fishing. Time with grandchildren. A little while ago, Steny Hoyer made some noises about having 220 votes, but that was walked back. He thought he had the exec order deal wrapped up, and that the pro-abortion group would go along.
What's happening is that there are four in the pro-abortion group who are refusing to give in on this deal.
When the rubber hits the road, no one trusts Granny Pelosi.
That math leads me to believe that either way they go – whichever four they lose or gain – puts them at 216 votes.
But as we all know, in actuality, they need 217.
They need to peel one off from either group. One who will either go against his/her gut and trust Granny, or who can be bought.

Who would spend 10 extra years in academia studying to be a doctor to work for the government with a panel deciding who gets health care and who doesn't? Even if their debts were wiped out (we're talking $300,000 – $500,000) in exchange for 10 years of government service, why would anyone do it for the small amount of pay they'd receive? What we're going to end up getting are a lot of B-listers who get moved to the head of the medical school line when the best and the brightest go into another line of work.
