Dems Ditch ‘Deem and Pass’

Top Democrats confirmed Saturday that the House would hold separate votes on the Senate healthcare bill and the reconciliation bill, making fixes to it.
Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), one of the chief deputy whips, Rep. Melvin Watt (D-N.C.), and Rep. Eliot Engel (D-N.Y.), all of whom said that Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) won’t use the tactic of deem and pass for healthcare reform.
The move effectively kills the “deem and pass” strategy Democrats had been eyeing to make changes to the Senate bill through a rule on the bill, which at the same time would have deemed the original Senate healthcare bill to have passed the House.
The House appears set now to move toward an up-or-down vote on the Senate healthcare bill, as well as a separate, up-or-down vote on the series of changes to that bill. There will still be a vote on the rule, as there always is for a piece of legislation, though it will not package the two bills together.

Damn… I was really hoping they'd tie the noose tighter and tighter around their necks…
The dems finally got the message that deem and pass is not constitutional in the way they were going to employ it.
It would have triggered a supreme court decision and you know how Obama has treated them lately.
They would have been more than happy to stop the madness of this health care bill by deeming the fecal laden bill as unconstitutional.
The voodoo economics and zombie deficit reduction the Democrats dreamed up, is the only thing that has become transparent about the bill from the get go.
Only a fool would believe this monstrosity would actually reduce costs when 30 million more people are shoved into the system and we all will have to pay for it.
Obama will win this battle, but the progressives will have mass casualties in November, which can't come soon enough for most Americans.
Nah… the rules committee realized that they couldn't pass reconciliation amendments to a bill that wasn't law (i.e., signed by Obumbles).
Now, they're trying to pass the fix-it bill before the up-down vote. Dumb. dumb. dumb. Just passes it back to the Senate since the fix-it bill changes the text, even though they're claiming otherwise.
The more stupid shenanigans they try, the more Dems look at it and think "WTF am I thinking?"

Am I the only one who is not surprised the Democrats did not utilize "deem and pass"? They were never going to do this anyway. Now, they can say they'll "play by the rules" and use Reconciliation and get positive PR for it. This was all part of Barry's sleight of hand trickery. While you watch the one hand threatening to do something unconstitutional, he instead slimes through with Reconciliation.

If they make changes and vote on it doesn’t it have to go back to the Senate? If President Obama signs this, with changes, before the Senate voted on it wouldn’t that be a clear violation as well as unconstitutional?
the fix it bill is irrelevant. if they pass the senate bill, it will be taken to barry, he’ll sign it, and it will become law. the senate will simply give the dems in the house a collective middle finger and say republican will make passing their “fix it” bill virtually impossible; and it time (after 14 months) to move onto something else.
the dems in the house are morons to believe the senate will even spend a day on their fix it bill.

The last minute trick that the Dums, I mean Dems, pulled out of their hats was to consider a Rule to vote for the so-called Reconciliation Bill before they vote for the Senate Bill itself. By reversing the order, it will make it easier for the spinless Dems to vote for both bills, in that questionable order. This is another dirty trick that has UnConstitutional implications. Wonder how the true brains of the Conservative Movement will turn this around in the next 24 hours.
This is the part that confuses me. Is deem and pass really dead or is it as you say? I tend to think it is as you say or I wouldn't be experiencing the confusion I am experiencing.
Would it be wrong to include in our nightly prayers a request for some illnesses to strike the wrong side of the aisle tonight?
How incompetent are these politicians? I seriously doubt they are smart enough to use "deem and ream" as a way of showing people they want to play by the rules. This has such a bad taste to it that they would lose far more by playing that game than not. They're just stooopid. They should never have brought it up in the first place. They're the George Costanzas of politics.
They've boxed themselves in. They have to approve – as is – the Senate bill, or not pass it. Either way the House has show itself to be completely LAME.
For crying out loud, people. STOP, go back to the drawing board and come up with a new approach to controlling the COST of health care first. Nobody could lose anymore respect for you than is already lost.
No need to use it since enough arm twisting and back room deals were made! Not to mention most of them probably had a dose of reality and realized they would flat out be breaking the law if they tried it thus jail time and threats of charges of treason!
Keep digging into who these "people" are America there has to be something they can be charged with and start locking them up. As far as protesting this obamination of a HC bill turn the dial up from 6 to 10, take the gloves off and go after them personally! They have a "its just business" attitude to this when it defines personal. So give them a dose of their own medicine and start going after them at their front door. Civil within the rule of law make their lives miserable, instead of protesting at a politicians office go to their business, or better yet their home!!!!

I can't help but think that this was a ploy by the Dems to get everyone including the Blue-Dogs all fired up over "deem & pass" only to take it off the table at the final moment in order to get folks to think that everything is better now. It is a PR ploy in my opinion and yet another tactic to try and squeeze out one or two more votes they need from Dems who were not comfortable with "deem and pass".
The left have excoriated Stupak for this amendment – : “No funds authorized or appropriated by this Act (or an Amendment made by this Act) may be used to pay for any abortion or to cover any part of the costs of any health plan that includes coverage of abortion.”
The “any health plan” is a good thing for us. We could also use it to exclude their take over of the student loan plan they're inserted and anything else for that matter. If this commiecare monster is voted in…
You are right-on, Steven. So, those pro-life dems who voted for this bill with the promise that the Senate will "fix it" have just shown how truly ignorant and naive they are. No one can trust Princess Pelosi or Prince Harry. This is a suicide pact the democrats are signing.
If the Democratic Congress shreds the constitution for this power grab, then, to paraphrase Phil Gramm: "We're going to keep on building the party (the Tea Party) until we're hunting Democrats with dogs."

I wonder what 2013 will look like. A 50% reduction in Drs. Insurance companies who have morphed away from heath insurance. Community hospitals closed. The high income earners relocated to AU, NZ, yachts etc… Taxes for all at 45%. Required show up at 7$ an hour gov't make busy jobs. What else do you see happening if we fail to curb the Socialists?

I think there is little doubt that this November will be a boondoggle of historic proporations for the Dems. They will be swept from office for a generation. Having said that… WHY WOULD PELOSI KNWOINGLY RISK HER POSITION AS SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE ? With Republicans retaking the House she loses her position. ____Her ego is so massive (as is her new 757 plane) that I find it exceedingly hard to believe she would sacrifice her leadership in the HOUSE for ANYBODY…including ObamaPOS. Makes no sense.

Yes, but the big story is that when everyone depends on the entitlement programs, no one who is opposed to them will be reelected. They had the GOP chasing around after the Filibuster, then Reconciliation, then Deem and Pass – the start line was left behind out of sight while the GOP finished 2nd in a two team race.
I think they held the abortion aspect in their pocket also, using it as chum to draw the opposition voices. If they felt like they couldn't get the votes for Reconciliation, they would sacrifice (perhaps a poor word choice) tax supported abortion to get the bill rammed through. The GOP and pro-life Dems would have lost that sticking point – the bill would pass with abortion funding status quo (Dems saving it for later down the road) while the whole healthcare bill monstrosity became law.
Did they catch the SEIU agent provocateur that did it yet…??

Even if they do ram this through, I think that there will be more fights to keep this out. The entire thing is unconstitutional and was never on the up and up from the beginning. I personally foresee this going to the Supreme Court. When the overwhelming majority of Americans detest this socialistic bill, there must be redress.

I know, I'm torn between being depressed and being hopeful. I am definitely going to fight on, but I hope that those that joined up even late in the game, won't get despondent and give up.

I'm not really a conspiracy theorist, but the whole things sounds so insane – how could they not see that this will be a disaster – that you have to ask yourself whether they are dumb or evil. And frankly, I'm beginning to think that they are evil, because no one can be that stupid, especially not people who work that high up in the gov't and are privy to information we aren't even privy to.
Obama said a lot of things before and during the campaign, including that "civilian army" comment that still bothers me to this day.

I'm fearful of the same thing but we have to keep pushing forward. I am confident, beyond the shadow of a doubt that if We the People are not allowed to bring this before the Supreme Court for redress, there will be a civil war unlike anything this country has ever seen. I pray that is never the case but it is our last option.
