ACORN’s Maryland Chapter Shuttered

A former leader of Maryland’s ACORN chapter said Monday the group will no longer operate in the state, doomed by an embarrassing national scandal six months ago from which the organization never recovered.
An undated sign hangs on the entrance to the ACORN offices at 16 W. 25th St. A former Maryland ACORN official said the office ceased operations late last year. You may recognize this stoop from this golden oldie.
Sonja Merchant-Jones, former co-chairwoman of the state chapter of ACORN and a board member since 1999, said there are no plans in Maryland to rebrand under a different name, a move undertaken Monday by several ACORN affiliates across the country.
Maryland ACORN ceased operations late last year, Merchant-Jones said, and all the offices in the state have closed. The group has not held a board meeting in Maryland since November, she added.
The Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now came under scrutiny in September, when videos recorded in Baltimore showed workers counseling two conservative activists pretending to be a pimp and prostitute. Two staff members of the Baltimore office were fired because of the video, which was broadcast on major networks throughout the country and showed the employees giving tax-evading tips to the man and a scantily dressed female partner.
The incident effectively shut down local and state offices, Merchant-Jones said, and the branches were forced to cease operations after dues-paying members fled.
Congress reacted to the video by stripping ACORN’s federal funding. Last week a federal judge upheld a ruling that a law blacklisting ACORN and groups allied with it was unconstitutional, but observers doubt ACORN will recoup any money.

It's hard to break the habit of riding the gravy train! These folks are like drug addicts waiting in line to get their next fix from the Federal Gov. While I agree with most here that ACORN will simply pop up again, morphed into another 'socially acceptable' version of itself, I'm reminded of what it was like before James and Hanna.
The fact that ACORN is on the run, even temporarily, is a great battle won. But a battle won is not a war won.

The questions on the Census (I received mine yesterday) DO NOT include anything about how much you make, how many cars you own, what you pay for insurance, etc..
The questions include name, age, DOB, race, and whether you own (w or w/o mortgage) or rent your home. That's it.

SK agree on the "total humiliation" strategy, however I can' t help but think we're
missing something. I think we may be under-utilizing the ridicule dimension.

When these scammers and cheats reincarnate themselves as another community organizing group are they bound by any law to truthfully say so if asked? I'll be very skeptical from now on when organizations start their door-to-door campaign.

Regardless, this is good news for me and my fellow Maryland taxpayers. Now if we can just get the Latino socialist group CASA out of the State's tax coffers, we'd be a little closer to being solvent.

Many service organizations admirably help oppressed and low-income families (minorities AND non-minorities) without being corrupt or criminal or trying to pervert the voting process… ACORN just isn't one of them. As it has been determined in the courts in a number of states. Has nothing to do with race, and everything with the law.
ACORN has a long, corrupt history and in a number of states, has been found guilty of voter fraud registration or is being investigated for it in many states. They receive a vast amount of taxpayer funds to operate, yet don't operate in a non-partisan fashion – they register only Democrats and at least one whistle-blower has come forward to say that Republican registrations have been thrown away by ACORN supervisors. In Pennsylvania, ACORN operated without a business license and had received a cease and desist notice, yet continued to operate. ACORN Founder Wade Rathke has been brought up on charges of embezzling $5 million from the Louisiana ACORN operation. The list goes on and on. The James O'Keefe videos exposed only one small piece of the corruption puzzle.
If a church or temple was doing something illegal, yet also helped people, they should not be ignored for lawbreaking. The doing of good doesn't excuse lawlessness. I know of many organizations that serve the disadvantaged that do not operate outside of the law. And if they did, they should be prosecuted.
No ACORN offices here in my little burg. But I think a good idea, nationwide, would be for at least one person walking in front of the new named organization offices every day with a sign that says "Don't be fooled by the name, its the same old ACORN".
You're right on that one, MikeinIdaho. ACORN has set up under different names in a number of states to continue to receive funding – California, Massachusetts, and New York to name but three. However, Ohio has come down much harder on ACORN and has forbidden ACORN to "rename/rebrand" itself there after it was found guilty on voter registration charges. We'll see if other states that have pending court cases will do the same – Nevada has levied many charges against ACORN, as has Louisiana. Fingers crossed.
