Tuesday Open Thread: Wolfe Edition
by PubliusToday, in 1931. American author Tom Wolfe was born. A pioneer of “New Journalism,” he remains one of the keenest observers of the American Experience. He is also immune to the pablum of the lefty, deconstructionist rhetoric that has ruined most contemporary commentary. (If you haven’t read “Radical Chic”, do it soon.) Happy Birthday!

God bless Mr. Wolfe! He's just about the finest writer living today!
Good luck finding a copy of "Mau-Mauing." It ain't easy…
My personal favorites are "The Painted Word," "From the Bauhaus… and "The Right Stuff."
A very talented, and interesting man.
Sounds too little too late to me, but I hope not! But, I'm sure that our progressive government run school system since the early 1900's will be successful in destroying our Republic! They control the schools, the lawyers, and our politicians! They don't need much else after only allowing progressive-minded people citizenship in America for over 100 years!
Read "Radical Chic" a long, long, long time ago and the one thing I remember about this fine work is….
that it is so, so , so today.
A lib/radical is a lib/radical is a lib/radical is a lib/radical.
My favorite is "Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test". All about the Merry Pranksters tripping their brains out on LSD, painting a school bus all crazy colors and driving across country. Smoking lots of pot, early Grateful Dead partys complete with cutting edge at the time light show, sound equipment and all manner of craziness.
The magic that was Neal Cassidy. Freedom. Following exactly zero of the usual rules of society. Beautiful. Wolfe really captured the fun they were all having. He just went down hill from there.
Coincidentally, I re-read "Radical Chic" and "Mau-Mauing the Flak Catchers" two weeks ago. Both books are wonderful. But Mau-Mauing is must-read for anyone interested in the rise of "community organizers."
Amazon has used copies from $0.97.
Easily the best American writer alive today. I remember reading Radical Chic in a public place when it was first published and laughing so much, others around me thought I was having some sort of attack.
My only problem with Wolfe is that he doesn't write enough.
Happy birthday sir.
"Bonfire" is a terrific read. Unlike "The Right Stuff" it was ruined by a pathetic movie version.
Mr Wolfe –
Thanks for providing many hours of entertainment and insight over the years.
Excellent thread. Might I suggest "The Pumphouse Gang," a collection of his short stories.
If you haven't read "Bonfire" you don't really understand Al Sharpton. He's our pressure valve!
Solid white before Memorial Day? Puleeze!
Solid writing, though…
Tom Wolfe, you are a genius and a national treasure. Happy Birthday.
Looking very dapper in the photo, Mr.Wolfe.Happy Birthday and many more! ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Hanzo
The movie must have done some good because it is very difficult to get a tape, CD, etc.
The Hollywood elite must have buried.
I thought the Al in the movie was a better Al than Al Sharpton.
Is there an organization that does surveys on which writers are must reading in college courses,… if there is…
It would be interesting to see how many times Tom Wolfe appears on these lists….
Can anyone shed some light on this?????
“It is very comforting to believe that leaders who do terrible things are, in fact, mad. That way, all we have to do is make sure we don’t put psychotics in high places and we’ve got the problem solved.” ~~ Tom Wolfe

Great book. H.B., Tom Wolfe.
Happy Texas Independence Day, Mr. Wolfe.
I support Jim Bunning's actions on the Senate floor!

On a lighter different note, Happy Birthday Mr. Wolfe!
"The Right Stuff" was one dog-eared book on Navy ships, I'll tell you. And enjoyed by all! Thanks!
"A Man In Full" – Happy Birthday, Tommy.
I do like his writing style very much. Bonfire of the Vanities is one of my top ten favorites, and there is a lot of competition for that list. I first read Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test when I was just a kid and have loved it ever since.
i must say you have great blog, i will come back again and read your blog for sure.
