The Day Everything Changed
by PubliusToday, in 2009, CNBC commentator Rick Santelli gave voice to the frustrations and anger of millions of Americans. Movements need countless variables. But, most importantly, they need a spark.
To Mr. Santelli we say, “Happy Anniversary!”

We owe a great deal to Mr. Santelli, nearly single-handedly rekindling the spirit of rebellion in all of us, against this Marxist regime. The people are about to make their voice heard in a MAJOR way this November.
Thank you for posting this !
I am so sick of others trying to take credit for the Tea Party Movement; credit which they do NOT deserve at all !
Thank you Mr. Santelli! One man with courage does make a difference!!
Rick is the man. He's they only thing that makes Bubble-Vision(aka CNBC) watchable. He needs his own show or even network for that matter. I love the shoot-outs between him and that FED mouthpiece Steve Lies-man, now that is most see TV. RUN RICK RUN…..SANTELLI 2012
It was a great day, thanks Rick! “I’m mad as hell, and I’m not gonna take it any more!”
This was a great moment, when I viewed this while it was happening. He was right on target. I am so glad he was not bound by political correctness, or edited in any way. Way to go Rick…
Thank you Mr. Santelli!!!!!
Birth of a movement! Very profound in it's consequences. Right words spoken at a critical time. Follow through is imperative!
Some A.M. yappers were bitching about a lack of "social issues" on the Tea Party agenda. I say F*** That!. This is about restoring a sense of relative power and reestablishing fiscal sanity. Talk about where the deck chairs belong AFTER you stop taking on water! Priorities, people, priorities…
This video really grabbed the American Spirit that had been gnarled deep in our guts that something was really, really wrong, starting with the financial irresponsiblities and meltdown under Bush. And to you leftie wackos, no it has nothing to do with a black man being voted in as President. It is the in-your-face corruption of our government, from the top to the bottom, which the stimulus has shown us all year exists in pork projects and social welfare payments – not jobs, it's the politicians' admitted collective failure to actually read the bills that are actually written by advocacy groups, its the failure of politicians to even show up and face their constituents, it's the backroom deals we were shown on Christmas Eve, it's the insane deficit and all the other major policies that are driving us to bankruptcy.
We are not just coming in November, we have arrived to stay. GO TPM!
A flick of the Bic… TWO thumbs UP… and a big "HELLLLYEAH!" to you, Mr. Santelli.
CM Sackett
Right on brother!
80/20 principle! Human nature always kicks in…
Pathetic.
Santelli's rant was about bailing out ignorant rednecks like yourselves because Wall Street hucksters like him took your money.
And convinced you that it was wrong that the government bailed him out at your expense after his group demanded it.
And you honestly believe these guys are on your side.
God you people are stupid.
Like, maybe RP?Oh crap, maybe I shouldn't have said that! LOL. ;^) ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Hanzo
LOL…………you mind reader you !
Nice to see ya, H. !
The professor was at Texas Tech. ;^) ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Hanzo
Lack of "social issues", WTF? Must have been Progressive plants. Rachel Madcow, was that you?Or mikatrolla? ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Hanzo
*YAWN* …………..Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Hanzo
One more example, I heard today California has proposed imposing a tax of 4.5% on top of our homeowner's insurance policies to pay for fire departments. Fire and police are supposed to be paid for out of our property taxes already. California stole money from its citizens in the form of a forced payroll tax as a loan to the state in December and is proposing to pay back this theft in IOUs. Some cities are charging for legitmate 911 calls – $300 a pop to pay the city when a robber is in your house? Why aren't they cutting the government payrolls? Everyone else in the private sector has and is. The unfunded pensions of unions and public employees have broken our back, and the rest of the country will see it with Medicare and Social Security. Just insane.
What guys are on our side? We are standing up together against all the hucksters to hold them all accountable.
Another example would be for college kids that think socialism works would be if a parent says " Since you believe in the mantra that all things should be equal for everyone, I have decided that the $15,000 that I was going to give you to pay for your classes will instead be divided equally among all your classmates." Then just wait to hear how fundamentally unfair the child thinks the parent's idea is. Progressive ideas always lack common sense.
CNBC allow this kind of rant? I am so amazed by that. I love it.
Happy Anniversary Rick I just wish I knew when the American public will truly WAKE UP & embrace what you clearly said and what the action was about 250+yrs ago. I will surely burn some bridges here but days of sugar coating talk and political correct addressing of topics/issue etc is over.
Listen to what Rick said throw "derivative securities" into Lake Michigan in July! He wasn't advocating protests with people chanting slogans carrying signs. He was talking about physical action just as those first Patriots did back in 1773. It will take physical PEACEFUL actions to get politicians to see their game is over with the American people.
What are you prepared to do http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F452KybPEnQ , is the question you must seriously ask yourself!? Its time for "out of the box" thinking in dealing with all politicians, bias fringe media and special interest groups who are only working for their own interest. Unconventional actions is what is going to be needed to affect real change for America through http://www.savingtherepublic.com
The Tea Party DOES have a position on social issues.
The Tea Party’s stance on social issues is this: arguments on social issues should be fairly debated by representatives who have been elected for their opposition to taxpayer-funded entitlements.
That’s what’s important: getting people from all over the spectrum on social issues, on foreign issues, to agree that this is the one true vital issue, the most vital since World War II. The other stuff is all negotiable. Even diehard social cons and libs can exist in a nation where their opponents hold sway. But many of us will not physically survive the continued fiscal liberalism of Democrats and Republicans, and many more will be reduced to poverty or dependency.
I remember that day vividly. The honesty of the frustration was impressive.
It's great to see capitalists and common sense Americans with a platform on of all places an nbc network.
BTW
You go Breitbart.
Yup. This not about "social issues". As you said, those will be irrelevant if we are all living in a Castro – style U.S.
Gladly, or sadly, depending on your point of view, this was one of those *I remember where I was when* moments, when I saw this. I had been so angry at Bush for 2 years, then Obama started spending on steroids. Amazing to realize that just 7 weeks later, hundreds of thousands across the country joined Rick's rally cry. And, the battle rages on. And on. And on.
"He is a very shallow critic who cannot see an eternal rebel in the heart of a conservative." -G.K. Chesterton.
We must be paying YOUR mortgage or rent. Typical Obamatron.
God you're stupid and LAZY!
No Wall Street huckster took my money. I sold my house in 2005 because I knew we were in a big, bad bubble. I tried to warn others but they wouldn't listen.
Nobody "took" anyone's money. The people who bought houses they couldn't afford were speculators.
Actually Santelli was not the first. The first tea party was on Dec 13, 2007 when we threw tea in the harbor in Texas, then we marched, all 10,00 of us on DC on July 12, 2008 and even FOX refused to cover us!
Santelli was aware of this and exclaimed that even HE would organize a tea party things were getting so bad. So it did not START with Rick but he helped it along. Read the history here:
http://www.nhteapartycoalition.org/tea/2009/11/21...
and ain't slowing down. They have thrown everything at us, racist, astroturf, teabagging, etc….and we just keep growing and coming on. Just wait until 2010 is over.
He was merely mimicking the first of us who did this on Dec 13 2007 and then marched on DC, 10,000 strong, on July 12, 2008.
It's amazing how many falsely think Santelli started it. He just took this idea from Schiff.
That's ok, we know where the TPM is grounded, in ordinary American folks, and the left keeps searching, and searching, for the "one" that leads us. It's our guts that lead us, not any single person or party.
A year ago a movement started but the fight is long from over! Just saw this on Drudgereport
"WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Barack Obama is expected to publish his healthcare plan as early as Sunday or Monday, combining features of the two Democratic bills passed by the Senate and House of Representatives, congressional aides and healthcare advocates said on Friday." Read the whole thing here:http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20100219/pl_nm/us_usa_...
This just days before the meeting with Republications – looks like he really wants their input -NOT
A lot was done in a year but, a lot still remains.
I remember watching this in awe with my brother as it happened as well. I kept thinking, WOW, someone actually thinks like we do. I was following the Tea Parties on http://www.instapundit.com I waited four days to see if anyone would organize a Tea Party in Utah…no one did. I couldn't take it any longer so I announced on PJTV I was going to hold a Tea Party on March 6th 2009. I fully expected to speak to the wind. I had never done anything political in my life. I fully expected to have people laughing at me as I stood at a lonely podium but I was determined to speak to the wind if I had to. About 100 people showed up! I wasn't alone. Now, I have organized or helped to organize 14 Tea Parties in Utah this past year. I have MANY new dear friends. What a GREAT feeling! Thank you Rick! (and Glenn Reynolds!)
Thank you professor, I loved that story Kind of an Ayn Rand feel to it…
Major props to you for spearheading your local group. I, too, have stopped flapping my gums, and am putting my feet on the pavement, and getting involved in our local Tea Party Movement. Sounds over dramatic, but, I literally didn't sleep a sound night from 11/08, until 01/19/2010, when Scott Brown took Teddy's seat. I see the future of America as a positive now, and sleep soundly.
Don't you find it curious people that those who have weak arguments, hidden agendas, or weak minds seem to always resort to name calling and or outright lies to articulate their views? You should head on back to media matters, the "free Press" or wherever you came from if you don't understand what is going on in this world..
Rave on you little Troll…LOL
Moms calling, bath time, don't forget your rubber duckie…

Right on! I watched it too, and for the first time in my life, instead of just showing up at the ballot box every couple of years, got my butt up off the couch and sent emails to my friends, small business owners and announced a Tea Party for July 4 in my small town. I too expected to show up in the town square and was fully ready to be denounced as the village dolt, one of those weirdos I'd seen over my lifetime that was holding up a sign (all seen before were very radical left), but proud. Over 400 people showed up with their homemade signs – and I kicked out a couple of Arian-type kids that showed up. Then…..with no funding, no party affiliation, about 2000 showed up on September 12. Amazing.
Happy Anniversary Mr. Santelli, and a big Thank You!
Hmm… Actually Savage and a guest/caller. Didn't catch it all.
"mikatrolla"! I know who you mean! Haha!
I take your reply as a compliment, and any compliment from Hanzo is welcome indeed…
Peace AND prosperity (what good is one without the other?)
it does not matter, really, but Rick's Rant is what woke up the "silent majority" that he referenced. I think that struck a chord in a lot of us at a very scary time. If there were others that were ahead of the curve, good for you, but it took something beyond what you were doing to strike the match that started the bonfire. But thank you for smoldering…..:)
Cheaper to buy a gun and kill the burglar. Then you can call the non-emergency number and ask them to come and collect the body.
Grad school glad man – Please read Ayn Rand. She is a hero for humanity. If you are advanced enough (I wasn't at the time) skip directly to "Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal". If you haven't already read it you can thank me later. If you think you would benefit from a deeper background, check out the other non-fiction from her first. Amazing how 50 years later the concepts are as fresh as ever.
In case you missed it, yeah, I respect where you are coming from. Stronger allies make for easier battles/wars and greater lasting victories. You seem to be on my side. Keep posting…

God Bless you Rick….a true patriot.
A bit ironic it happened on division of leftist NBC. LOL. Sweet irony.
Rick should run for office, what district does he live in?
More anon. Say it fast, you'll get moron. Unfortunately saying it 3 times won't change a damn thing. He'll still be a moron.
I know I DON"T want you on my side. You've proven again and again that you just have nothing intelligent to share. So piss off, dude! Go back to your rock.
Thanks. I'm in the first 100 pages of "Atlas" – it's amazing.
I visit Pam Geller's site here and there – it's a traesure – as was Ayn Rand.
Thank you.
(I ocassionally share the story of being attacked by Communists in Japan as a little kid {about 6 or 7} and, as you might suspect, that made quite an immpression on me. By the '68 election I was a conservative, at age 8. Never looked back, never wavered. I'll read some non-fiction Rand, at your suggestion. Thanks)
Hey Galt, a conservative here and right now, I don't give a XXX about social issues. If we have no money, the social issues won't matter squat. It takes a prosperous society for the libs to have any money for their Progressive agenda, and us TPM people see that Econ 101 is not being adhered to. Has anyone in our admnistration even taken Econ 101 – oh, I forget, they are Keynsians. Don't even get me started on this one, as I can go on and on.
Coincidentally, I was on a train in France last summer and as I was boarding I reached an open car about the same time another obvious American did. We shared the car and he was reading "Atlas Shrugged". I got a kick out of El Paso being the destination of the train early in the book. Anyway, he was a U.VA grad and was starting grad school at Tulane, where he was from an obviously successful family. His father is an investment banker, this guy was a letterman footballer at Virginia and was obviously very bright.
My point? I have hope for the future – there are enough people pulling the right direction – we just need more people pulling on the rope – we'll win.
LOL, except here in CA, you have to take a handgun safety class, get a certificate, pay the government a fee for the certificate, pay someone to give you the class, pay the government for a permit, have a safe in your house where you can lock your gun so you cannot get to it if a robber enters, register with the state to buy ammunition, and so on. I figure a really sharp knife from my kitchen is easier.
Easy on the the eyes, no?
and they abandon threads after some EDUCATION about the issue!
I think that you've completely missed the point I made.
No, the TPM doesn't have a "leader" and Rick isn't one, nor did he ever intend to be one.
Yes, it's just ordinary folks.
Hey boys. What are you two doing here? Trolling for Mika?
Jamesb,
"Atlas" can become challenging due to the literary style. Don't give up no matter what. It is a great PHILOSOPHICAL manifesto. Keep reading it all, it is obvious to me that you will "get" it. "For The New Intellectual" is a great follow up/summary/Cliff's note's once you have read the fiction. Read it all!. "We The Living" is BRUTAL! Life in "revolutionary" Russia? OUCH! Where is my gun? (rhetorical, it's next to me now). Yeah, I'm passionate about A.R., but that's only because she fleshed out what I already knew. You will dig it!
Not I………………I'm delighted that he is taking the night off !
Maybe he joined David Hasselhoff and the Fonz. I think they're at some seedy motel making sweet, sweet anti-semetic love. Mika's probably filming it.
Back for more humiliation and abuse, are you little anon?
Wanna see "stupid" ? GO LOOK INTO THE NEAREST MIRROR !
What's with your obsession with so called "rednecks"?
Good grief……………………..nobody could possibly be as ignorant and stupid as YOU are, anaon!
Most firms and people who work on the generic "WALL STREET" have had less than NOTHING at all to do with 1) the DOT com bubble 2) the housing crash 3) mortgages, 4) were bailed out by the government 5) and for your coup de gras SANTELLI IS ON THE MERC, WHICH IS IN CHICAGO, WHICH WILST IT IS PART OF THE GENERIC "WALL STREET",IT IS ON LASALLE STREET !
One of the great TV moments of the decade. I believe this was the first mention of a Tea Party to oppose the Obama agenda.
LOL…………maybe, but perhaps they are now using other nics here. ;^)
100% got you and 10% agreed. Small poster here earlier, but active tonight, spouse is out of town and I have free reign to rant! Loved that this Rick anniversary came up tonight. Just devine….
Of course he is in on destroying this nation………………"no crisis should be wasted", so they create one.
Oh, sorry, I meant 100% agreed…..you know, I have the same problem as our govt, I don't know how many zeros go in the mix….
A "conservative"? Hmm…. Maybe you are an Individual Objectivist instead, or a Constitutionalist (if that's a real term?)? I bet you are "tolerant" and may even be liberal in the "classical" sense. I don't give a crap what people do in the privacy of their own lives as long as they don't infringe on the lives of others while doing it. I'm alive to be happy, but don't expect to do it at the expense of anybody else.(Note: "alive to be happy" not "happy to be alive"). Don't get me wrong, some "conservative" social issues and values require a vigorous defense precisely because they stand in the way of the "progressive" agenda. "Family values" are antithetical to collectivism. Just be cautious in your "conservatism", as I have met a few nuts from that side too, and they can poison the well… Victory if we stay focused… Hell if we don't…
I doubt it. They had so many fans. Why would they give that up?
LOL………………………..I'm so glad that I saw the second reply, before I asked you to explain the first, as that one was not just confusing, but somewhat off putting.
My spouse would rather that I rant away on line, than in real life. It's not that we disagree ( we don't ! ); it's that we DO agree and finds it all bad enough without listening to me rant about it !
The only "small" posters here are the damned trolls; otherwise, we're all equals.
ROTFLOL……………..they have fans, here, besides each other ?
Hi Galt. If you see my other postings, I'm not too (nod to someone I have never posted to) WWeedUp, I'm just a regular person who has recently (to my shame) gotten active. I love our Constitution and believe in a limited government in a real Republic that has not acted like it for a long time. I am in California, where we are fighting tooth and nail against the Progressives. I admit, I did not have a clue what was brewing under our feet for the past decades. BUT, now I do, and am standing up and actually found out I was not alone.
Actually, I started going online here because when I put the TV on, spouse just starts yelling at it and I don't get any information that I need. (and we don't disagree either, I was on the late boat on this one). I was just working, paying taxes, enjoying family, until I realized that the yelling was correct.
Hey, redcent, you are the first to have my new (sorry, only) avitar, I just figured out how to size one and put it online. Techno challenged, but did it (chest bursting with proud moment!)
Oh welcome to that club, but with me, it started in the '90s and it was i, who was yelling at the T.V. and even at the newspaper and my spouse couldn't bear Clinton and would turn off the T.V., whenever he came on; so I couldn't get the info either. LOL
And before you ask, yes, Obama gets the same treatment, whenever the spouse sees Barry on the screen.
So I've been on line, on political forums, posting away, for quite some time now.
Congrats, SJC !
I'm a bit techno challenged myself, but I don't have a real avatar, because I haven't yet found a penny jpeg I like.
Fight! We live (or are supposed too) in a Republic with democratically elected representatives. Democracy is simply Mob rule! Know the difference and spread the word! No apologies, just FIGHT! Words mean things, don't ever let some squishy bastard off the hook, make them say what they mean and make sure they mean what they say! No shame in being awake in the present, just don't nod off in the future… Welcome aboard, however we may agree… With great pains, "Power to the people!"… God, that hurt… (hippies did have some good slogans).
My dog asleep with tongue hanging out, I could not resist using this one. the techno challenge was to crop it and size it to fit. But we are way off topic. LOL..and this is what makes me think even more, I never see humor in the lefties posts, never. This actually scares me, as it is a rare moment that I see anyone on the left make fun of themselves. Conservatives do it all the time and enjoy the humor of self-roasting. Wondering (and wandering) thought for a late night Friday….
Thank you Mr Santelli for being the first to truely speak out what we where all feeling at the time and still are!
It is a shame that the left took such a patriotic movement and smeared it. Its a shame that they make nasty sexual references to honest good American people for simply voicing what they feel
It will NOT be a shame when we show them the TRUE sleeping giant in November!
It's a good picture !
I'm not good at cropping either, so don't feel alone!
Hey, it's late Friday night, we're allowed a bit of leeway and since this is all in good fun, what the hey.
No, lefties aren't ever funny. Want to know why? NOT ONLY DON'T THEY HAVE A SENSE OF HUMOR, THEY DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT'S FUNNY ! ;^)
Well, since I have recently become an "expert" at cropping pictures (hmmm. brings to mind the gun-totting guy in AZ) send me your pic of your dog, cat, mouse, delta smelt, I will proudly (chest heaving to be a knight in shining armour) make you an avitar of your choice.
Again, redcent, show me one moment of humor and you get your avitar for free….(free comes with chains, BTW!)
totting or toting, not sure here.
Frist the Tea party movement is sprang forth and then it is demonized and ridiculed by our oppressors.
well know what a few rocks can do to glass houses. Are you listening National Socialist Media? We can stop you.
Then we move on to the 2010 elections and turn out the House of Representatives. Then those corrupt toads in the Senate get their turn. Are we men or are we sheep, being led to our pen. Do they govern with our consent ? NO. Are they corrupt and are they bankrupting our country? YES! A thousand times over they are ruining our country and our children's future is bleaker for it.
I say if its a fight they want we'll oblige them. we have right and the constitution on our side. they have slavery, lies, and corruption on theirs.
do you want your FREEDOM? Is the TPM just words? BE PREPARED.
sic semper tyranis
[...] out there who could have imagined CNBC commentator Rick Santelli’s rant about Obamanomics one year ago today having the impact on the “Tea Party” movement it [...]
redcent, that's just me making a nubie posting, I meant to ask you to show me one moment of humor from a leftie posting. Goodness, when you read sometimes what you write, it can be misconstued. I take flank front when I see something that I write can be misconstrued. Free and chains only meant that the govt does not ever give a free program. (my head is hurting to deflect political correctness here……)_
Oh you really area live wire, tonight; very funny ! LOL
Well, I haven't found a suitable picture of a "redcent", which is what I want, so thanks, but I'll take the will for the deed.
There's no "free" lunch; but under Obama, we are stuck with a dope and chains.
It's "toting", one "T", BTW.
I never thought of this. His "tea party" remark did spark the entire Tea Party movement. What a great man! For brash politically incorrect conservative commentary, please visit my blog…

as I was always a lurker, I'm kinda missing the posts of cowboy.
Cowboy doesn't post late at night, but he has slowed down/is posting on another BIG site more/maybe just taking time off for REAL LIFE.
How about a buffalo nickel?
The lefties, as I said, don't know nor do they understand humor and trolls are the worst !
I don't think that I have ever, in almost 13 years on line, ever seen a lefty poster write anything funny or even slightly humorous.
Not to worry……………..you haven't embarrassed yourself in any reply, that you didn't quickly fix.
Yeah, you are right, I was free tonight to post away for the first tiime at night (away from my real world) since this site was up.
If my nic were "plug Nickle", that would suit. ;^)
But I need a "red" ( shiny copper ) penny, as my avatar. The ones nI've found are all muddy brown. ;-(
We have a good time, late at night, because the trolls usually ( though not always ) disappear/crawl beack under their respective rocks by now. .
You are a very good person, can I engage you here (most likely a later discussion) with real economics discussions?
We will max out the trolls with real infomation.
No-one wants to hear about something so stupid as an AD curve (Aggregate Demand)
hellow, where are you ANON? come speak in the internet world of ideals, and congruent thoughts!
helllow, I guess I am another non-[rorewaaicw (sorry typed it wrong, too much pizza on my keyboard from our local school board election tonight) The Progressives lost. lost and lost.
Wow, it seems like yesterday.
How time flies when you're having fun.
I can't wait, because I'm convinced it's going to get better.
This was the moment when I woke up, I saw the post on Drudge and I thought my head would explode…..I drove to my first job of the day and was hearing Rush break it down….I never felt this surge against my leaders since I heard Clinton lie on my PRC ( while serving in the Marine Corps ) about his "relations, with that woman…." We have awoken in this new political world, and I am an active participant. Good morning Libs, your time is over, time to find a job and fend for yourself like the rest of the tax paying America does.
Rick Santelli sounded the 'wake up call' in America. Thank you.
A friend sent this to me via email. I'm sharing it here because it's something that might make Mr. Santelli smile.
As the late Adrian Rogers said, "you cannot multiply wealth by dividing it."
An economics professor at a local college made a statement that he had never failed a single student before,
but had recently failed an entire class.
That class had insisted that Obama's socialism worked and that no one would be poor and no one would be rich, a great equalizer.
The professor then said, "OK, we will have an experiment in this class on Obama's plan".
All grades would be averaged and everyone would receive the same grade so no one would fail and no one would receive an A.
After the first test, the grades were averaged and everyone got a B.
The students who studied hard were upset and the students who studied little were happy.
As the second test rolled around, the students who studied little had studied even less and the ones who studied hard decided they wanted a free ride too so they studied little.
The second test average was a D!
No one was happy.
When the 3rd test rolled around, the average was an F.
The scores never increased as bickering, blame and name-calling all resulted in hard feelings and no one would study for the benefit of anyone else.
All failed, to their great surprise, and the professor told them that socialism would also ultimately fail because when the reward is great, the effort to succeed is great but when government takes all the reward away, no one will try or want to succeed.
Could not be any simpler than that. (Please pass this on)
Remember, there is a mid-term election in 2010!
Obama is so bad in what he's doing, I'm left with the only thought possible. He's destroying our economy on purpose.
