Thursday Open Thread: Mt Vernon Edition
by PubliusYesterday, a group of, mostly DC-based, conservative figures released “The Mt. Vernon Statement,” because…well, we’re not really sure. Issuing statements is just a DC thing, it seems. Anyway, we include it below for your perusal.

Good statement…but how many will actually bother to read, and abide by it?? Maybe Glenn Beck's rantings got through to a few in Washington?
Sounds good to me.
The powdered wigs in Washington will no doubt be baffled by this.
When talk is cheap there will be plenty of words to go around.
While I agree with the statement, I am not sure why you need to sign a document to do what it is right and adhere to the Constitution. I am afraid the signing, or not signing, such a document will turn into political ammo. Conservatism can't divide itself into competing factions and allow "moderates"/progressives to remain in dominate power.
Where can do we find the next re-founders? They aren't in Washington.
It seems to me that the TEA Party movement people have their attention mainly focused on the fiscal INSANITY in D.C, by the drone bees in the Democrat Party and by the GOPer's that don't understand what being a GOPer is suppposed to be all about.
Conversely I'm a concerned about vote splitting by TEA Party members seeking a conservative "purity test".
Let's keep our eye on the ball – defeating liberal Democrats FIRST – booting RINO'S second.
The Tea Party groups will have a great effect on the local elections in their respective states, as far as federal elections they could talk to each other within their respective states to determine the best candidate.. I'm not sure what this Mt Vernon statement will do but I do know what the Tea Party's have done so far in its infancy.. They have killed the cap & trade, health care and forced many to not run this year.. I don't know of any group thats done this much in their life span let alone their infancy..
Theres no need for a national leader or a group of leaders as all politics start at the local level and as these local officials move up to state and federal the tide will change and governments power and size with dwindle…
Dont ever let these MSM, DNC,RNC fools tell you theres a need for a national leader as they just want a figure head they can tear down bringing the Local Tea Party groups with them..
The Tea Party movement is great but does little to solidify any power. They need to go to the ACLU and force them to sue Nancy & Harry for not following the Constitution as they pledged when they were sworn in to their offices. This would show that their actions have some consequences.
Think about it, if these guys had to dig into their own pockets to defend their actions they would be broke fast. Also can we take the jets away from these "Leaders" so they can enjoy meeting some of us regular people at the airport?
A nebulous statement so far as specifics of the US Constitution are involved. Not sure what "nature's God" means. What is the reason to not simply say "God." They speak of "principles." The Constitution is not a collection of principles, it is the law. "Limits government's powers but ensures it performs…" If they really believed that we would not be in the present situation. Also, they are suppose to do, under Constitutional law, what we, the people, tell them what to do, when to do it, and how to do it. That has been grossly defied, especially within the last year. The constitutionality they talk about is one step removed from the intent of the Constitution itself. I am always suspicious when there is a one step or more removal from actual intent. They do this on the Hill, it has been decades in the making, and that has caused the present frustration among Americans. I am highly suspicious of what I read hear. More double-speak. Straight talk is the best talk.
That definitely should be the plan.
“We blah, blah, blah, blah etc.”
Actions speak louder than words.
Your actions, not your words, will determine your fate at the ballot box this year and 2012.
Start acting like conservatives/patriots and perhaps you will be allowed to remain in office. (except for John McCain. I salute him for his military service/sacrifice but he has failed as a patriot while in office. Time to retire and take your ego maniac daughter and her bleeding heart mother with you.)
If the Republicans hadn’t acted like Beltway bandits and fawning over the liberal Media for 14 years, the Democrats and their socialist financial policies and programs would not be threatening our way of life and they would not need to make any declarations of ‘Conservative Commitment’.
I for one would be reluctant to vote Republican this year except that the Democrat/socialists would put us into the garbage can of history otherwise.
Unlike 1994, 1996, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, I will not give the Republicans the benefit of the doubt for more than one election cycle. If the Republicans do not move effectively to staunch the fiscal bleeding and the socialist programs draining this country then those newly elected will find themselves out and another batch voted in.
Anyone voting with the Democrat/socialists will have only one chance to disavow their mistake and then they will be considered RINO.
McCains, Specters and Snowes will not be tolerated and if the Republican leadership does not rein them in or at least repudiate their actions then the leadership had better look to their own careers as they will be in danger also.
what is so hard to come out and say as conservatives we WILL cut the size of the fed Government 30% in the first 2 years of our next administration. Then list the departments to be eliminated Treasury, Agriculture, Education, and then start rolling back some of the other 9000 federal programs.
The base problems with conservatives is, like liberals, they think the Federal Government actually can be a tool for good. Most of the conservatives I know find virtually everything the Fed does to be FUBAR’d and we want to defund them at every level.
Then comes out with a 10-15% personal and 15% corporate tax. Everyone pays based on consumption (which includes all the illegals and people that shelter their income in one of the 15,000 tax exemptions that currently exist).
Tell the public you will eliminate the fed’s inclusion in every aspect of your lives, you will defund the fed at every level, and I believe people will flock to that banner. But NNNNOoooo lets come out with some feel good panty waste philosophy that simply reinforces that when (insert name here) gets in power we’ll give you the right federal programs and continue to bankrupt those of us that pay taxes
And how did the Contract with America work out? And all the rest of the words, words, words. In the words of Eliza Dolittle – "Show me!"
Yeah………..what HE said!!!!!!!!!
Great document! I printed out a copy of it and even saved a copy on my computer. It's hard to imagine just how much that this government has been infiltrated over the years! I disagree with Glenn Beck on one point because I think that this fight between individual, state, and Federal rights have been in contention before our Constitution was even ratified! I further believe that is why our forefathers kept the contradictory "slave" issue alive, which Lincoln, a lawyer(there always the same, no absolute right or wrong) was able to use to put federal power over state rights to formally begin the formal fight to destroy individual freedoms by ironically freeing slaves, making "freedom" a slave to individual rights! Remember, I'm not a racist, but I believe this was a tool by those wanting tyranny in government right from the beginning!
Talk is cheap. My momma used to say, "Do IT, …….& then talk about IT"……………
FOR THE RECORD: I am sick and tired of the democrats and Oblamer in particular to keep blaming Bush for the recession and the concomitant unemployment numbers.
First, Bush inherited a recession himself when the bubble of the internet burst and then the economy got lambasted with 9-11. During this time he had a republican congress that had lost it's way and were acting like democrats when it came to spending. During his terms the highest the unemployment numbers got was 6.3% and averaged 5.2%.
Second, when the congress was taken over by the dems in November of 2006 the rate stood at 4.5%. Over the ensuing months the rate of unemployment steadily grew each month without exception to 7.7% at the time of Oblamer's innaugeration. We know what has happened since.
Let's review: CONGRESS controls spending (wasting) and anyone who wants to see a REAL HOCKEY STICK chart can look at the growth in unemployment since the dems took over congress. Don't believe me,,,look it up losers. Our economy is where it is because of Nancy and Harry. Oblamer was part of that congress though to his credit he was absent most of the time that he was not voting 'present'.
I think the statement’s fine, now lets watch what they do. Call me skeptical, but these are inside the beltway types, that feast on the largess – - that is Washington, and by extension – - part of the problem.
We don't need no stinking leaders,,,,,,we let our founding constitutional principles guide us. If they want to take exception to our principles, let them try.
Dear Publicus, If we allow a bunch of Government Nit Wits and “consumer watchdog groups” to Bankrupt a great company like Toyota Motors, Than we are the Stupidest people on the planet and deserve to live in poverty and misery
Good start: Now go build on it. Build on it, win on it. Remind the American people what our Founding principles are–what they used to be, what they can be, and what we face if we don’t return to them.
There are many of us out here, in the trench’s doing what ever we can to save this country from socialism/marxist/dictatorship & the Constitution breaking government! The document stands for what I believe and grass roots is from all avenues. Many signatures on this were ones that I DO have respect for. Good to know that they are on the WE THE PEOPLE end of the efforts too.
Michelle Malkin, God bless her, did the work for all of us and read through this piece of claptrap. (http://www.michellemalkin.com)
Hey, let's close Gitmo and bring terrorists to American soil! Let's make sure we have an open borders policy so when Americans go back to work we can all pay for free medical care for all the poor people flooding across from the southern border!
Past all the rhetoric and the lovely sounding name, it's just another document made up by a bunch of Beltway insiders. Any conservative who signed it needs to look it over again — and get their signature off, pronto.
It’s a start,lets get fiscal.
Totally agree there Joan….
Where was this commitment 0save the tax cut) on our side of the aisle from 2001 to 2006.
Ask a wood worker…. why he sharpens his chisels once in a while….
Competing factions….. the destination is what matters not so much the various routes.
Agreed, but in those seats where victory is assured for Republicans or those where a more conservative approach might ensure victory let us not shrink from confrontation of ideas. We give our common enemy no amunition if our debate is on ideas and principals… they have neither.
What nonsense. First, the U.S,. Constitution was anything but a conservative document. Conservatism is defined as holding to old ways, being suspicious of radical change and supporting only incremental, gradual change. The U.S. Constitution contained radical new ideas and was a huge change from the status quo. It acknowledged the innate freedom of man and a set of rights he already possessed. This was coupled with an explicit description of the limits of a central federal government, which at this point is a laughable proposition, given that our federal govt spends more than the GDP of any country in the world, except China.
Another poster really nailed it. What programs and depts would these 'Conservatives' cut? How would they change our foreign policy? How many federal govt employees would they fire? What mandates on the states would they roll back? What is their specific recommendation for entitlement reform?
Open Thread Alert
Beck, 10:00amC, openly admitted he had, the last 2 months, become overwhelmed, exhausted &
has realized as much recently. He said he would be working hard to get back on track. Maybe he
listens, after all.
Keep it in mind there Doc
I bet ol Mellonhead is kicking in the ass for that tune.
Your manifesto is a tad simpler there Bonnie, and a little less vauntly, but…..
A whole lot more specific and to the point,….
Like it.
Thank you Bonnie, I'll go to MM's site & read it. I started early this a.m., but the darn thing put me back
to sleep. I had to get off or risk becoming narcoleptic.
Yeti I agree the natures God statement is bizarre I suspect it came for a debate as to the political propriety on calling out to god directly so they put Gaia in between. Expect to hear some mumers of Theisism as cover.
hear hear
Keene and Norquist are major backers to this Mt Vernon Statement. They are also major backers of Civilian trials for terrorist and open borders amnesty.
Be careful what you sign onto folks.
The Declaration and Constitution were in fact created by Liberals who were influenced by Liberals such as Thomas Paine, John Locke and Adam Smith. "Liberal" at that time referred to people who believed in liberty and individual rights, and a very limited government to protect those rights.
Unfortunately around 1900 the term was high jacked by a movement that believed in big government and in control of the free market (progressives). Academics still refer to the founders and their political philosophers as "classical liberals". To avoid the obvious confusion, some with "classical liberal" beliefs have adopted the term Libertarian.
In any event, neither the founders nor the creators of the above document have any relation to the Merriam Webster definition of ones who are "suspicious of radical change". They were their day's RADICALS and their ideas are just a valid (and scary to many who want a comfortable environment) today as they were then.
A huge wave is coming this summer in the form of 600 billion dollars that is going to drown out the voices of those who realize the horror that is this socialist agenda.
There will be jobs for everyone and happy days will take us well past the November elections and the Obamists will maintain control for the next two years. and than……
the true intent of the Trojan horse will be known.
This eloquent document, is so inspiring for these times,…….. but I'm afraid it is a tad too late
The year was 2006 and the event was the November elections and if this manifesto would have appeared than,…just maybe all you conservatives would have realized …. man we got to get to the polls.
Now!!!….hell… fellas we got this huge fire we have to put out
And all seem to be telling us is that you would like to be awarded the contract to do the repairs.
Well you just might get it, but for now,…..just shut the F__K up and grab a pail of water.
Yeah, I don't see how he is possibly viable with the 'Breck Girl' hanging round his neck…

I consider myself to be the most Conservative person alive…period.
I cannot understand why "so called" Conservatives would be this STUPID, maybe it's because they are mostly Washington Political conservatives?
If there is a Conservative movement in America, it sure isn't these boobs!
The part that I don't agree with and is destructive in my opinion is number four: "4-It supports America’s national interest in advancing freedom and opposing tyranny in the world and prudently considers what we can and should do to that end." I find nothing in the Declaration of Independance or in the US Constitution that leads me to believe that the founding fathers had any desire or vision of "advancing freedom and opposing tyranny" anywhere other than on their own soil, here in the US. When did it become "conservative" to be responsible for the worlds freedom? I don't equate that with my conservatism.
no, it is because they are mostly lawyers, ……….they believe the solution to every problem is WORDS.
In law school they are taught to argue either side of ANY argument, which leads them to feel far sup-
erior to their fellow citizens. What they don't realize, it corrupts their SOULS.
ditto to that chicago ralph. going into these elections, i bet even nancy pelosi starts talking like a tea bagger.
interesting point victor. hamilton, washington & the other federalists didn't seem to make too many bones about their aristocratic sensibilities and the stratified, hierarchical society required by those sensibilities. i don't about the cabal thing with Lincoln but still, interesting point.
I read this and I am wondering who is"we" and what would "we" do besides pander to us?
Off – topic:
If the Dems put up John Mellencamp to run for Senate in Indiana, he will be an easy target…
Put up an ad showing him campaigning for John Edwards and the tagline : "He wanted John Edwards to be President, can you trust his judgement on anything?"
That ought to take care of it…

Tend to agree with you there Jimmy… these clowns kinda…….
made Time a very important factor.
Let's put out the fire fast while we still have something left to repair.
The "ACLU" kidding right?
Not at all, there are 2 conservative legal eagles in the ACLU, Properly pushed they would or should take the case and let liberty ring again. If pushed by AB & Fox it would be a very interesting case for Freedom!
"would like to be awarded the 'contract' to do the repairs"…………that's it. Not included were any cost
estimates or other commitment as to work scheduling etc.
They want the contract…….#1. I want TORT REFORM…….NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
–sigh– yap yap yap yap yap with no actions or results.
Uh, then one more cycle is one too many there Sparky.
Jeff did you get this from a fund raising letter? I have never seen the ACLU's name attached to anything conservative. Could you give me a couple of conservative cases they have taken?
Here is a list of cases protecting Christians ability to practice their religion http://www.aclu.org/aclu-defense-religious-practi... They are fighting against Ja-No's national identity card push. They are defending a woman wearing a pro McCain Tshirt to a polling office.
These are all cases that those two guys, I mentioned earlier are involved in. There is a minor move within the ACLU to actually defend freedom and if pushed by the media they will do this but it takes pushing.
