Monday Open Thread: Internet Regulation Edition
by PubliusToday, in 1996, President Clinton signed into law the Communications Decency Act, an attempt by the then-GOP led Congress to regulate content on the Internet. Just over a year earlier, the GOP had won control of Congress on a promise of limited government. File this away for November 3, 2010.

Holding September 11 trial in New York difficult: Obama
WASHINGTON
Sun Feb 7, 2010 6:41pm EST
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Barack Obama said on Sunday he had not ruled out putting the suspected mastermind of the September 11 attacks on trial in New York City but logistical issues and local opposition made it difficult.

Duh! !!
Yeah, too bad there are so many conservatives who are still failing to realize that the Republicans are the same Big government dipshits that Democrats are , its Just that the Democrats have the courage of their convictions and go full boar with it and the Republicans are incremental about it.
The first amendment always seems to bother these nitwits…
Our founding fathers had it right…leave it alone.
The GOP is often just as sstupid as the Dems, however overall I prefer someone anyone wwho understands America is a philosophy as much as a nation, that isn't the Dems.
Repuba-demo-cannots…Their all the same.
Not since 1989 has there been an American occupying the Oval Office that is worthy of such…All things are cyclical, and it's about time we get back to top center…!
I cannot fathom why anyone would want government control, on either side of the aisle, to infect the internet.
I think we all fully understand the fact that both party's have faults !! The Dems may have woke America up but we are not just looking at the Dems we are looking to replace both party members that voted to steal our money to buy banks, auto companys et al: and give it to the non- productive members of America, all of which should be shamed into doing their best or living with their failures.. More Millionaires in America came from failure then from being proped up by government programs, in fact I doubt gov. programs have made a single millionaire if we're not counting elected officials that is !!!
I **** I could say what I really mean, but I ****. Because every **** I try, these little ***** appear. What do they mean? I have been ******** by someone. What can I *****? Maybe it's for the best. My own good, so to speak. Well, have a **** day.
I'll pick a pig trail to hell over a High-Speed rail to hell any day.
??? It's early for me. Can you explain further? N? M?
Our rights are God given.
Therefore they cannot be taken or limited by anyone, because there is no higher power than God.
Read the founders.

Agree with rightbrain —
Am not afraid of "greedy" corporations, I can make more money and take business elsewhere.
Am afraid of a "greedy" government, "greedy" for more power, I can't make more freedom.
Marxism never sleeps… so neither shall I
.
Whoever represents us, they need to understand the concept of limited government.
That is the heart and soul of America's founding.
I think the chances of finding a Democrat that gets it are miniscule because their answer to almost every problem is more government. But that doesn't mean by default that all Republicans get it either.
Free Speech is Free Speech, although subject to the same restrictions we would normally expect elsewhere in life. People threatening violence, fraud, violent overthrow of government, assasination etc cannot legally do so just because it is the internet. What makes the internet unique is that it truly is a worldwide phenomenon. While I do not possess the technical expertise to speak convincingly, it seems like it is easier, potentially to track the identity of most normal users. The ones who are hardest to track are usually the ones we would be most concerned about. In that respect, I suppose it is not unlike other forms of security (locks being good at keeping honest people from breaking into your house.) I am left to wonder what, if anything, happened to the son of a state senator who hacked into then Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin's email account? That one seems to be forgotten by old media in their attempt to destroy James O'Keefe.
Democrats. Republicans….stop looking at it as left and right…its a sliding scale of big government vs little. Almost ALL politicians WANT big government, it gives them more power.
Boot them ALL.
It's a fact, we have to watch both parties!!..The minute they
think the people are sleeping, that's when the s&^t hits the
fan…..
As has been stated upthread…eternal vigilance is required, you turn your back on either party and they will get out of control.
Progressives infect both sides of the aisle. Strip them all of the power we gave them at the ballot box. The game is over.
We will NOT go silently into TYRANNY!!!! They (both sides!) can TRY to shut us up, but when they do that, we only yell louder!! They will either pay attention to US or they will feel the boot, as we KICK them out!!!
No surprise here. Both the Democrat and Republican Parties are freedom hating statists.
Can someone find out what Obama is doing via Executive Order to take over the State's National Guard and appointing a new Governor's advisory board to advise him on Military operations WITHIN the UNITED STATES???Will any MSM ask questions and NOT accept LIES & Spin for annswers ??????????????????????????????
Filthy Words!!
*NSFW*!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1WeAgC-cXlY *NSFW*!!!
Does Obama think the Iranian leader is opening a bakery?
Re: Defiant Ahmadinejad orders higher 'yellow cake' uranium enrichment
It makes you wonder what they're worried about us discussing. Possibly throwing them all out on their ear? lol! Too late!
It's our job to fix that, isn't it? At least with the Republicans, there is a salvageable base to work off of.
Good reminder. Tyrany in all its forms comes disguised as the public good. The right has a habit of wanting to protect the publics sensibilities. The left will jump on this bandwagon every time because it means more power to be exploited. Think back to the strange bedfellows of Gore and Tipper joining forces with the christian right to control rap speech. Lesson to all speech can not be controled only forced into whispers. Your kids will hear all the dirty words see all the dirty pictures eventually your job is to insulate them as long as possible relegating that chore to government is both ineffective and dangerous. If I was still a parent of young children MTV, BET, ABC family, and im sure there are others would not be allowed on my TV would they watch elsewhere, at some point but limiting access and demonstrating your disaproval sets the tone.
I think that if the word logistical was changed to logical the sentence would make more sense.

Incumbents have to go regardless of their stipe. Let them run another time but the swampo needs to be drained and cleaned.
Lefty heads exploding because Palin wrote notes on her hand?
But, of course!
Just wait till they find out:
PALIN HAD OTHER CRIB-NOTES WRITTEN ON HER BODY!

Bingo! You know that Rush has so much power to sway the electorate. Glenn too!
At least you realize that republican and conservative are not synonymous. Similarly not everyone views every democrat as a liberal. As Sean Hannity pointed out, the majority of Americans describe themselves as conservatives. That being said most conservatives do actually understand that both political parties are playing the ends against the middle. Between the two political parties they have managed to divide our nation and pit us against one another for their own gains. Those who support the Tea Party movement understand this and are banding together to take our government back from the political parties, the social elite and special interest groups. We will no longer stand idly by as our government runs roughshod over the people they are meant to represent. We will not tolerate our government to micromanage the populace as they spend decades of future taxes on projects aimed at fattening their investment portfolios.
So…….you would all favor communications indecency then, is that it? Libertarian? Without doubt. Conservative? Not a chance…
You should be afraid of corporations that answer to no one… the first thing they do is buy congress people to create monopolies and then you have no choice but to pay.
And pay you will.
Good question! This is happening with virtually no scrutiny! President's police?
Need a major ad campaign in all media — stating the First Amendment.
No one has forgotten about him except you. David Kernall is facing felony counts which carry a penalty of up to five years in prison and $250,000 fines. He was scheduled for a hearing in April 2010 that was postponed at the request of both sides.
O'Keefe will get to explain himself to the legal system too. He doesn't get a free pass just because he is a right winger.
No one wants to shut you up. We want the American people to see you for who you really are… not the faux patriots you claim to be. We want you out on the streets demonstrating to the entire world who you are.
The right wing thrives in secrecy and the only disinfectant is to air you out.
nor should he, but I find the old left media much more interested in trying to discredit OKeefe now than they were in reporting about ACORN abuses
Tyranny dresses itself up like patriots and adopts the language of Christianity. Scratch a teapartier and find a tyrant.
That's because all you listen to is right wing media. Crawl out of the infotainment bubble and read something for yourself.
spoken like someone who reads and listens to leftist media and thinks it is "news." I find it interesting you find so much time to troll around an "infotainment site." Having had years and years of liberal networks, newspapers, weekly newsmags. etc. with a deathgrip on "news" Most new conservative media is honest about it's point of view. Sounds like Dan Rather at HDNet is your "go to guy." Try not to get too aroused.
Ewwww… you're disgusting.
You answered your own question. "Government control".
Net Neutrality means no discrimination. Net Neutrality prevents Internet providers from blocking, speeding up or slowing down Web content based on its source, ownership or destination.
You don't like "net neutrality"…fine. Please explain to me how stopping telecom companies from charging you more to access certain web content = government control.

So who are these "right wing media" outlet's? Fox? Mr.Breitbart's sites? The christian broadcast network? I'm confused as to what sites you speak of………..Please inform me?
I wasn't really talking to you, but it is interesting that you responded…. and with a laundry list of the usual suspects. Throw in some Drudge, Hannity and Rush and you would have a fairly well rounded source of news for your typical right wing blogger.
The echo chamber.
Nondhimmi
The 'N' is self explanatory and not to be used by any who are not dark pigmented liberals.
The 'M' is Macaca[1] is a pejorative epithet used by francophone colonialists in Central Africa's Belgian Congo for the native population.
Dukehoopsfan
You must be incorrect, Ibama said it, and he is the smartest man in the world.
(can you say corpseman?)
Well it is a blog isn't it?
Your additions are interesting also……… I'm confused though. Are you suggesting that because someone watches or listens to these shows that they are "right wing"? The fact that I am Catholic, watch Fox, and visit Mr. Breitbart's sites therefore makes me right-wing? If I understand you correctly, none of the above named sources should be relied upon to accurately report news or information. Correct? Whom would you suggest?
All of these sources are part of the right wing echo chamber. Polling has shown that righty likes to have his opinions parroted back to him rather than be challenged, so it is the rare one who will even look outside his comfort zone. It creates an information bubble and you get lots of folks quoting guys like Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck…. like on this blog.
For example, if you only listen to Fox News, you are much more likely to believe that we were attacked by Saddam on 911. Just like you are far more likely to believe that AGW is some kind of global conspiracy.
Smartest teleprompter in the world/sarc
Interesting perspective, but I don't see it……….I am a former life long Independent. After my idiot senator was elected to the White House, I registered as a Republican.
I was disgusted at the fact that the people I know who voted for Barry in Illinois (largely Dems) based there opinion of him solely on the MSM's glowing reports. When I pointed out Obama's shortcomings they brushed it off as a Republican hit job. They refused to look at his Illinois voting record (what little there was) or how he was sleazed into the Senators seat in the first place (well placed, but vile and despicable personal attacks on his opponent) .
I also saw that Democrat's would overlook almost anything to elect there guy. Case in point was the 2006 election for Gov. in Illinois. Rod Blagojevich was already under Federal investigation when he was overwhelmingly re-elected to a second term. I asked Democrat friends how they could possibly vote for the sleazebag when he was under investigation, and was met with an a chorus of crickets……….Most had "no idea" he was in the Fed's crosshairs. All you had to do was look somewhere other than the Chicago (biased) media and the information was there………Yet Republican and Independent friends all knew this and cast there vote elsewhere………..
As I said, I just don't see. I don't see "blindness" on the right…….I do however see "deaf, dumb, and blind" on the left……….
Dukehoopsfan
Naw, the one that committed suicide was the smart one.
If repubs make gains in the house and senate and turn that into some fkng moral crusade about content issues or vice or any other extra constitutional activity I'll dump them on their asses in a new york minute. I've had it enough of that crap and so have so many others. We've put up with moral crusaders more than long enough, take a hint repubs, wade into social issues heavy handed and see what it gets you. It won't endear you to anyone and it'll only piss your supporters off.
K-street & lawyers are the root of all evil in the USA today. Why do I never hear anyone railing against
the lobbyist? Are they too big to tackle? Does no one care about the damage they have done to our
country. What would the Founding Fathers think about our current system?
HEY MISSOURI, DISREGARD THE SMEAR CAMPAIGN AD AGAINST ROY BLUNT. IT LINKS MR BLUNT TO EVIL BIG OIL AND TERRORISM. MR ROY BLUNT IS A FINE CONSERVATIVE AND PUBLIC SERVANT. ROBIN CARNAHAN DEMONIZES EVIL BIG OIL, WHAT DOES SHE BURN IN ALL HER CARS GREEN AIR. SHE IS ONE OF THOSE GREENIES THAT WANTS TO RESTRICT GASOLINE USE BY RAISING YOUR PRICES. ROBIN AGREES WITH THE OBAMA AGENDA AND HAS LINKS TO ACORN.
You were never an independent. You may have not have been registered to vote but you were still always a Republican at heart.
Really? Wow, I was so confused all those decades…….Thanks for clearing that up for me……………….
Hey I'm here for you bro… it's what I do.

Driver’s Licenses for the Internet?
Today’s idea: Let’s have “driver’s licenses” for the Internet to counter online fraud, hackers and espionage, a Microsoft executive suggests.
Internet | Maybe on your busy junket to the World Economic Forum in Davos last week you missed the panel where Craig Mundie, Microsoft’s chief research and technology officer, offered up the Internet licensing proposal above. Barbara Kiviat of the Curious Capitalist blog was there, and summarizes the idea thusly:
Isaac Brekken for The New York Times
Licenses for both wheel and Web? (Audi’s planned dashboard screen, right.)
What Mundie is proposing is to impose authentication. He draws an analogy to automobile use. If you want to drive a car, you have to have a license (not to mention an inspection, insurance, etc.). If you do something bad with that car, like break a law, there is the chance that you will lose your license and be prevented from driving in the future. In other words, there is a legal and social process for imposing discipline. Mundie imagines three tiers of Internet I.D.: one for people, one for machines and one for programs (which often act as proxies for the other two).
Now, there are, of course, a number of obstacles to making such a scheme be reality. Even here in the mountains of Switzerland I can hear the worldwide scream go up: “But we’re entitled to anonymity on the Internet!” Really? Are you? Why do you think that?
Mundie [above] pointed out that in the physical world we are implicitly comfortable with the notion that there are certain places we’re not allowed to go without identifying ourselves. Are you allowed to walk down the street with no one knowing who you are? Absolutely. Are you allowed to walk into a bank vault and still not give your name? Hardly.
The Internet was never originally intended as a worldwide system of mass communication, Ms. Kiviat notes, let alone a largely anonymous one. But that is what it grew into, replete with feisty commenters like those reacting to her post. [The Curious Capitalist
The internet was given to us for free, not to pay or have a licenses to use the internet. Well, there tring to pass this on us. Whatever the government takes or try to control it more more contro; on people.
scary………..freedoms bites the dust …….again.
