Congressman John Murtha Dead at 77

Spokesman for Rep. John Murtha says the Pennsylvania Democrat has died at 77.
ED Note: Rep. Murtha was a close political ally of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. He was her choice for Majority Leader, but he was edged out in a caucus-wide vote by Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-MD). He became a darling of the on-line left as a fierce critic of the Iraq War. For many conservatives, he was a personification of the Congressional earmark system and its potential for abuse. His final months in office were marked by serious questions surrounding his steering of millions of dollars in Pentagon appropriations.
Consider this an open thread.

Not a fan of his "King of Pork" politics or most of his economic views, but I gotta respect his military service which included a Silver Star and two Purple Hearts.

I disagreed with his politics, but he still came from good Marine Corps stock. It's a shame he lost sight of the values.

The Bible teaches us to love the sinner but hate the sin. In this regard I pray that God will show Mr. Murtha mercy and comfort his family as they grieve. That being said what I find particularly saddening is that it took his passing to remove him from office. We perhaps we too will find some comfort in knowing there is one less liberal in office.
Whoever performed his gall bladder surgery should become Surgeon General.
I'm sure there are those among his family and friends who mourn his death, and for them I have sympathy. For Murtha himself, however, I have none. He was as corrupt as they come, and his efforts to convict the Haditha Marines before they'd even had a trial was an absolute disgrace and a betrayal of the Corps he once proudly served in. With John Murtha's death, the health of the republic improved, even if just a little bit.
As a human being, my condolences to his family. As a former serviceman, my respects to his service in the Corps. As a politician- glad he's gone. And let's not forget the way he slandered his fellow Marines in Haditha.
Unfortunately, being a hero as a young man in uniform doesn't preclude becoming a crook as an old man in Congress: witness Randy "Duke" Cunningham.
Murtha has held down a district which naturally should trend GOP- another special election for us? Or does Rendell get to appoint a successor?
He's going to a better place…….well, maybe not.
Too bad he died in office. I would've preferred his career end in electoral defeat.

While I am glad people like Ted Kennedy and Jack Murtha are no longer able to insert their insanity into our systems and our wallets, I take no joy in their deaths. I believe that people of good will everywhere hold life as sacred. I hope we will be able to convince people of the error of their ways rather than just go for a war of attrition.

I had it done about 10 years ago via key hole surgery….the hardest part was after when the leftover gas got trapped under my diaphragm. I thought I was gonna die, couldn't breath and on a pain scale of 1-10 it was a 12 or 13….

crooked, dishonest, double dealing- and a disgrace to the United States Marine Corps as well. His family and friends enriched themselves at the expense of the taxpayer, a multi-million dollar airport was constructed for his convenience alone, and he gave the term 'pork barrel politics' new meaning.

I really have little good to say about the guy. I threw a shoe at the TV a while back, and following that I contributed heavily to Col. Bill Russell to try to see the creep defeated for reelection. I recall the incident that got me riled was when he bounced into a hearing and made the statement that, "…Iraq is far more intense than Vietnam." I served in combat in RVN and was wounded (for real) twice. If Murtha's BS statement was true, we'd have another monument in DC by this time with another 58K names on it.
I won't miss him.

I refuse, like others here, to offer any condolences for this man. Like John Kerry and his Winter Soldiers, John Murtha disgraced his service to this country when he declared, with no proof, no trial, no tribunal, "It's much worse than reported in Time magazine. There was no fire fight. There was no IED that killed these innocent people. Our troops overreacted because of the pressure on them and they killed innocent civilians in cold blood. And that's what the report is going to tell." Even if he had been correct, which he was NOT, he spit on the Constitution and on ALL members of the military when he made that comment. I believe that the only reason he said it, was to hurt President George Bush, and ladies and gentlemen, that is a TERRIBLE thing for a Congressman to do.

The Democrat Murtha will not be missed , except perhaps by the enemies, foreign and domestic as well as Democrat, of the United States. There is no honor for giving aid and comfort to the enemy, only remembrance for such by the survivors of Democrat Murtha actions and effrontery.
