Spokesman for Rep. John Murtha says the Pennsylvania Democrat has died at 77.
ED Note: Rep. Murtha was a close political ally of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. He was her choice for Majority Leader, but he was edged out in a caucus-wide vote by Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-MD). He became a darling of the on-line left as a fierce critic of the Iraq War. For many conservatives, he was a personification of the Congressional earmark system and its potential for abuse. His final months in office were marked by serious questions surrounding his steering of millions of dollars in Pentagon appropriations.
Consider this an open thread.

The Bible teaches us to love the sinner but hate the sin. In this regard I pray that God will show Mr. Murtha mercy and comfort his family as they grieve. That being said what I find particularly saddening is that it took his passing to remove him from office. We perhaps we too will find some comfort in knowing there is one less liberal in office.
Whoever performed his gall bladder surgery should become Surgeon General.
I'm sure there are those among his family and friends who mourn his death, and for them I have sympathy. For Murtha himself, however, I have none. He was as corrupt as they come, and his efforts to convict the Haditha Marines before they'd even had a trial was an absolute disgrace and a betrayal of the Corps he once proudly served in. With John Murtha's death, the health of the republic improved, even if just a little bit.
As a human being, my condolences to his family. As a former serviceman, my respects to his service in the Corps. As a politician- glad he's gone. And let's not forget the way he slandered his fellow Marines in Haditha.
Unfortunately, being a hero as a young man in uniform doesn't preclude becoming a crook as an old man in Congress: witness Randy "Duke" Cunningham.
Murtha has held down a district which naturally should trend GOP- another special election for us? Or does Rendell get to appoint a successor?

While I am glad people like Ted Kennedy and Jack Murtha are no longer able to insert their insanity into our systems and our wallets, I take no joy in their deaths. I believe that people of good will everywhere hold life as sacred. I hope we will be able to convince people of the error of their ways rather than just go for a war of attrition.

I had it done about 10 years ago via key hole surgery….the hardest part was after when the leftover gas got trapped under my diaphragm. I thought I was gonna die, couldn't breath and on a pain scale of 1-10 it was a 12 or 13….

I really have little good to say about the guy. I threw a shoe at the TV a while back, and following that I contributed heavily to Col. Bill Russell to try to see the creep defeated for reelection. I recall the incident that got me riled was when he bounced into a hearing and made the statement that, "…Iraq is far more intense than Vietnam." I served in combat in RVN and was wounded (for real) twice. If Murtha's BS statement was true, we'd have another monument in DC by this time with another 58K names on it.

Like John Kerry and his Winter Soldiers, John Murtha disgraced his service to this country when he declared, with no proof, no trial, no tribunal, "It's much worse than reported in Time magazine. There was no fire fight. There was no IED that killed these innocent people. Our troops overreacted because of the pressure on them and they killed innocent civilians in cold blood. And that's what the report is going to tell." Even if he had been correct, which he was NOT, he spit on the Constitution and on ALL members of the military when he made that comment. I believe that the only reason he said it, was to hurt President George Bush, and ladies and gentlemen, that is a TERRIBLE thing for a Congressman to do.

As a Pennsylvanian, who was appalled by Mr. Murtha's politics, big changes are a comin'. He represented District 12 which is huge. No successor has been groomed as those pesky Democrats think themselves invincible.
The irony is that Murtha was elected in a special election in 1974 that foreshadowed a Democrat landslide and a repudiation against government corruption. Murtha then became the embodiment of government corruption and insularity. The special election for his successor will likely foreshadow a Republican landslide and a repudiation against the corruption, pork spending, and insularity he embodied.
We also need to reform congressional ethics violation. Currently if the ethics violations are made against a member of the ruling majority, as most are, the member can count on the majority on the House Ethics Committee to insulate him from the consequences of his actions.

If Murtha wished to be remembered at his funeral as a man of honor he should have lived the years in between the two as such. He created his own legacy.

I disagree; The health care bill passed the house by 3 votes. Pelosi admits she does not now have the necessary number of votes to pass the senate version of the health care bill. Remember every vote counts.

I am conservative to the right of Rush Limbaugh, but I still agree with your premise that "Angry and nasty are no way to go through life." Many of these comments are in poor taste. Events like this tend to bring out the best in some people and the worst in others, regardless of political affiliation. It does not help the cause. You and I seldom agree on our politics, but I think we both would like to see a little more civility.
Five years ago I had emergency surgery to remove my Gallbladder that had become gangrenous, which then gave me a hideous case of acute Pancreatitis. I thought the gangrenous Gallbladder (and the Sepsis that went with it) was the worst pain ever, until I got the Pancreatitis. Just unreal pain, I seriously wanted die. Two weeks of ICU & hospitalization later I was able to go home. I really haven't been the same since physically.

My prayers go out to Congressman Murtha's family. That said, Murtha was a perfect example of the sad state of politics, political favors and unconscionable spending. Murtha is a perfect example of why term limits are essential. Right now, if anyone has ever lost a loved one and known that pain, especially many times over, this should not be a forum for such hatred but condolences. Any time a life ends it is something to be treated with respect and reflection on the fact that we all need to make the most of our time. That said Murtha has in no way embodied the Corps values of honor, courage and commitment. He used his position of leadership to enrich himself and his cronies. Even though I'm only a Corporal, I know that isn't what the Marine Corps teaches about leadership. It is decidedly Un-Marine. He should receive military honors out of respect for the tradition. My parents were relived the day that they learned that Hitler died. Likewise for Stalin. I was happy the day that Saddam Hussein died. I admit that Murtha does not quite make their rank of evil but I have to say that my only regret was that the people didn't have a chance to vote him out in 2010 or that he wasn't indicted.

Not sure how it happens, but mine was that way also. I think it is because it gets plugged up by the gall stones, and gets infected. Had it removed without any complications. I think I was lucky.

All I know is it SUCKS. The weird thing was, in the few weeks prior I had had some intermittent abdominal pain that would last a few minutes and then clear up completely. The night before I had the attack I went to bed feeling just fine but woke up three hours later feeling like I had a sword sticking out of my midsection and was puking what looked like antifreeze. Not fun.

Come to think of it, one of the retired gentlemen used to be a lounge singer in vegas. And one of the women had been married to a mayor. Oh my gosh. Maybe she wasn't crazy.
I knew there was a reason I liked her. None of the other volunteers would hang out with her, but I thought she was cool. She wasn't afraid to "lay it out". I respected that about her.
Did you guys know they get "play" in retirement homes? Oh yes, it's true. She used to give me the "skinny" (her word) on who was spending the night in who's room. I swear, that woman should have been working for our intelligence community.

I used to perform a volunteer service at retirement homes and senior centers myself.
One of the women frequently came attired in “hot pants,” those really short shorts. Some wore gobs or makeup and eye shadow, while others used nothing except Crisco oil as face moisturizer.
One lovely woman, over 90 and legally blind, did possess some peripheral vision, and used to dress “to the 9’s” (as they called it). Always had her hair and nails looking good. She said she had never married because she had been engaged 2 times, with both men meeting catastrophic deaths. Said she didn’t want to “kill” another one. What an interesting lady with a lot of stories worth hearing.
I found it interesting, that almost all the women over 90 had never been married. I deduced that having a husband and kids must be a lot of stress!
So…not crazy then.
