Conservative Blogger Faces Criticism Over Protege, by DAVID FOLKENFLIK
The conservative online news entrepreneur Andrew Breitbart is, for the moment, doing little to dispel stereotypes about bloggers. During a recent visit to his home on the west side of Los Angeles, Breitbart, 41, is working from his own basement. Barefoot. At the beck and call of his own kids.
But that basement is light and airy, with a decent view of the city. A young assistant works there with Breitbart to help funnel wire service stories to Breitbart.com, his main news aggregation site. And his reach, thanks to a brawling rhetorical style and a protege who taped the undercover ACORN videos last year, is only expanding.
Over the past year, Breitbart has hired editors to run a new network of conservative blogs called BigGovernment.com, BigHollywood.com and BigJournalism.com. No matter the focus, the media are a prime target throughout.
“They want to control the narrative,” Breitbart says. “I’m saying, ‘No more!’ The new media has freed it up. I’m sorry, mainstream media. It’s over. Your ability to control the narrative is over.”
New Fodder
He can talk that way for hours — and finds fresh grist all over. The media have devoted intense coverage to the late-January arrest of James O’Keefe, the 25-year-old videographer and conservative provocateur. He was charged with trying to get into Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu’s federal office in New Orleans under false pretenses to commit a felony. And O’Keefe is also under contract to write for BigGovernment.com.

This is the same NPR that taught us "how to speak teabag?"
Andrew,
I think you hit a nerve.
Good for you! Keep drilling.
Yes, there's a lot of truth decay. And darn it, we're out of Novocaine!

This article has a smarmy condescending tone to it. Where do NPR leeches get off talking down a self made man like Andrew Breitbart?
All Things Considered, Andrew Breitbart is a breath of Fresh Air.
/rimshot
Agreed. It kills me that we pay for these self absorbed clowns.
It's strange to hear an interview on a network I find mostly biased, founded on a business model I find mostly onerous (taxpayer funded money mixed with pathetic fund raising begging) and then enjoy the final product. (I've always enjoyed parts of NPR, while mostly hating the pomposity more than the bias.) I thought David Folkenflik did a good job and that Professor Glenn Reynolds provided a good point-counterpoint to NY TIMES Clark Hoyt. At least it wasn't Eric Boehlert! I hope I didn't scare David. He did everything in his power to be fair and it showed. Thanks for the opportunity to let me be heard.
Why does this keep getting deleted?
With so many media outlets and the internet there's no justifiable reason to continue funding PBS or NPR with our tax dollars.
Me thinks they are protesting too much…. (Fox, Beck, Breitbart, anyone who speaks the truth). Thank you Andrew Breitbart for your website and giving us a forum to connect with Americans across the country that we couldn't meet in a local coffee shop! Keep up the good work! We've got your back!!! You must be doing a GREAT job to get so much attention!

…and it goes poof within about 30 seconds. What gives?
Thanks for all of the times you maneuver behind 'enemy lines', especially when you took on Schuster. You are armed with truth and a force to be reckoned with, for sure. Keep it up, God bless and know that freedom loving Americans are behind you 100%.
That's A Propper Bow Wow Wow.
It's A Propper Release.
Not bad AB you keep sticking your head in the lions mouth and so far you still have it. Keep on with the good fight but make sure you have quick reflexes. HMMM basement office, I seem to remeber MM or huff trying to spin you as a trust fund baby. I guess i better suck up to somebody else if I need a big loan.
NPR does radio theater well. There are times when it is nice to slide into the enviroment created. I do enjoy it for that. Once again good job and some new insites.
Another neocon sullying the name of "conservatives."
According to some regular posters here ( Cowboylogic for one) Breitbart's editors are prone to censorship.
I have not had any of my posts deleted to date, and I am not exactly known for being agreeable.
lol blah blah DIRTEH NEOCONZ@!1! blah blah blah DEM JEWS TOOK OUR JOBS!@111 blah blah blah

Go AB GOGO!
What we can expect…After all it's NPR!
The only thing the NYT informs the public of is the next lie to be told or has been told without saying so.
I don’t even need to give NPR the internet “click” to know AB did well. At this point, NPR is irrelevant and is using professionals like AB to give credence to their faultering media model.
NPR is still out there? I thought they were gone… nada… finis…. adios… ciao…. bye bye…. siyonara… happy trails…..
There's a glitch…I think intensedebate. This was just happening at Bigjournalism.
Did NPR receive any stimulus subsidies?
NPR suffers from occasional involuntary spams of integrity but they catch on quick and stamp that stuff out. I like Juan Williams cause he's got the brass to sit on their on Fox and dig in his heels, he's a decent chap.
Agreed! Juan Williams and Mara Liasson of NPR deserve credit for appearing on FOX News.
They have both been unfairly targeted by the left for doing so.
I admire their integrity. I don't always agree with their politics but I respect them both immensely.
Well, at least it wasn't an outright hit piece.
Andrew, you should consider coming to Searchlight NV at the end of March for the Kickoff of TEA party Express III. I would let you fly a banner with your website address at my booth, I am willing to bet that the organizers would love to have you speak.
Nice work! I can't help it, I love NPR. They are my one vice. I guess they speak to my inner snob, or starving artist. Or both.
In fact, if you make some stickers with your website addresses on them, I will pass them out for free all across the country.
Government sponsored?! About 2% of it's funding comes through government grants.
As if a news organization is immutable from bias or inaccuracy if they are privately funded.
I guess I can't argue with you about what you hear. If you hear a liberal slant, then you hear a liberal slant. But I hear hosts who are honest moderators. Panelists with equal air time. Non-sensational reporting. Honest questions, rather than attempts to construe a story to support their view.
I think that you need to re=read the "Wikipedia" , 2% of the funding comes from bidding on government contracts. That is to say the 2% comes for doing government work, not 2% of it's overall funding.
Beckel reminds me of the palooka in the old 'B' prizefight movies who is ordered by the crooked promoter to 'take a dive' in the third round. Watching him take a whuppin before he hits the canvas is great theater.
So, understand, at least half of their funding comes from stations which pay them with money from their begathons (about 10%) and the rest comes from government grant money to the stations.
You know that the msm is squirming, when NPR have nothing better to talk about that AB! Why are they so threatened by him?? Oh, it must be his honesty and integrity (neither of which they have) that they find unnerving! Funny thing is..all these 'news' sites can stop all the news coming from Fox or BigGovernment..IF they could prove them WRONG!!! HA! Beck is STILL waiting on the phone call…give 'em hell Andrew! WE love your site!! Anyone ever notice that the three BIGGEST names all have the letter B in them?? Glenn Beck. Bill O'Reilly, Andrew Breitbart….:)
NPR suffers from occasional involuntary spams of integrity but they catch on quick and stamp that stuff out.
Sort of like Reuters and that backdoor tax story.
They should de-fund NPR. Why support w/ tax$ PC fools to call us names on the air? I guess we should keep our eyes on ACORN funding first.
Shut up Terry.
Andrew the start out of this story makes you sound like a modern day Waynes World working from your basement with Garth. But then they correct themselves with that your basement has a view of the city. I wish you would post a picture of your basement and view to show that it is not a paneled place in your parents basement.
You are doing a great job and if you can get some of the video from Okeefe we are all waiting for the new suprise. I just wish he would have been following Pelosi and showing that she lives the lifestyle of the Rich and Infamous. Her voters need to see that she is the most out of touch person in Washington.
I forgot that NPR was not part of Air America. I thought they had some connection but I guess they are still around for a while.
I think Holder did approve some money still going to ACORN. I hope AB does another story on them soon. I would also like to see a list of all the organizations under ACORN. I saw a guy in Miami wearing a Homeless Voice vest walking into ACORN and would love to know if this group (they seem to be at every major stop light in Miami begging for money) is part of ACORN.

Henceforth, let ACORN and all its cover organizations be known as "mixed nuts."
Damn these so-called "mixed nuts." The package says "mixed nuts," but it's almost all acorns…
Damn these so-called "mixed nuts." The package says "mixed nuts," but it's almost all acorns…
Mr. Breitbart,
In recent months I have grown increasingly annoyed with the communicative clutter of online news services and I began the search for one that at the very least would not treat me like some moron with all its bells and whistles. For example, the download time for a lot of these "services" is absolutely ridiculous. I often time joke to my friends that they are more interested in extracting as much information as possible from my link into their sites than they are of delivering any, hence the pathetic time-lags (but is it a joke?). Anyhow, I came across your news site and I've got to say "Good on you mate!". What a refreshing change. I really do hope you do not fall into the "bells and whistles" trap many of these wobbling news services are caught up in. No doubt, you'll get a lot of those mongrels try to drag you down into their sewer but I get a gut feeling your readership is going to sky rocket with people such as myself who really are sick and tired of having their intelligence insulted by these conceited twits. May you go from strength to strength.
Hoyt says. "It is not about the broader mission that I think organizations, like the Times, set for themselves — which is, I think, broadly informing the public."
Pictures of the year for 2009 and not a single Tea Party photo? They do not do a service when they neglect this many million people. Liberal media have seen the last of my monies.
If only 2% comes from government grants, why do thy squel like pigs when there's talk about defunding them?
Andrew – I've pretty much been with you since day 1 and I will continue to following and spread the word of your site. May your readership increase exponentially. Thank you for your service and devotion to the truth.

I have had a couple deleted. Which surprised me as they were nowhere as bad as some of the antisemitic garbage spewed by ThFonz. At least they have not locked me out..
Overall, a pretty decent report from NPR which is amazing. I thought Andrew Breitbart held his own perfectly, as usual.
The only part I didn't like was the little dig the NPR guy put in at the end. He clearly wanted to make it known that he supports the MSM, which is fine. As a point though, it seemed gratuitous.
NPR is just another mouthpiece for the current administration. They should be called "Media for Morons". At least Breitbart offers intellectual and thought-provoking insight for discriminating consumers who like to decide for themselves.
They are typical of the elitist left who hold nothing but disdain and loathing for anyone who would make their own way without depending on the government and it's minions for assistance or direction.
Thanks for Al Gore's Global Warming too…. Think how much COLDER it would have been this past week if not for global warming…
Given the crap we have to put up with on here from some of the morons that show up either regularly or from time-to-time, I have a hard time believing they censor anyone unless it's an outright attack/filled with vulgarity.
Great job AB! Keep up the GREAT work.
There's NO Place for public funded radio. If it can't stand on it's own legs it doesn't deserve to exist. It should be extinct already. It's just another form of the bail out… That goes for the train system too.
Eeeee….. they tuk ur juuuuuubs!
Listen to all you whiners. NPR does a very fair and balanced interview of Barfbart and you just find something else to complain about. No media is free of bias but NPR is a lot more informative and neutral than, say , Fox News or any of the cable infotainment 24 hour channels. Listener/viewer supported media means that they don't have to censor news stories based on the whims of their corporate masters. Andrew should be lucky that NPR gave him a spot.
Someone made a comment in that article that Andrew is more intent on scoring ideological points than disseminating information. So true.
Why is the public giving any money to NPR? That should be asked once a week by the NEW media till it gets cut off.
Know that freedom loving Canadians are behind you too.
Breitbart also did us a huge favor ,he made Conservatism Hot ,Cool, Hip and Sexy .
The Left thought they had that in the bag, guess what were the revolutionaries taking it to the streets and speaking truth to power now.
It was funny to hear NPR stretch so hard to try to make Breitbart sound unreliable, but all they did was make themselves sound bitter.
limBaugh…Bmarklevin…
What name did NPR call "us"?
I agree with your standards. I think the same should be applied to the military, schools, police, fire departments, etc . . .
Ah, yes.
Things Ill-Considered.
An American Institution.
hmm…How do you propose de-funding the military, police and fire departments? Military is part of the Fed's job… as National defense. Police and Fire are state level… how would that work?
"Breitbart says he merely has a "dysfunctional" relationship with the mainstream media. His sites rely heavily on it, even as they tear it down."
I can't see Andrew relying heavily on MSM because they DON'T report anything that isn't misconstrued. Look at the blogroll on the right. Compare that with the MSM. I could even name a few more like sites from Israel and Canada Free Press. The whole freaking world knows whats going on in this country except for our own people BECAUSE of the communist-progressive MSM.
I live in a small town and nobody that I have talked to knows AB. So I try to convince them to check out the Big sites and Breitbart.com. I would suggest some of y'all do the same. There are a lot of ill-informed people out there. I should know…I was one of them!
Your probably right. When I made the post, the site was really slow.
I hope NPR picks up on this "fresh grist"!
Latest news showing up is that Mr. O'keefe may have picked up the proverbial fee or two from past laying down with some not so nice proverbial dogs of the White Supremacist movement.
here is the link with all of the gory details…

The thing is that i don't really think of what breitbart does as media, but rather activism which uses media as it's vehicle. and it's effective and good. much more effective than, say conservative street protests (the now-defunct protest warrior, for instance) or other attempts to imitate what works for the left. with our dominance of the am dial, augmented by the web, we have our own game which is very successful.
on a semi-related point, i think about the o'kieffe incident at landrieu's office and the hypocrisy of the lefty reaction to it. many people have offered journalistic episodes to illustrate the hypocrisy of the lefty reaction, such as abc sending a bugged correspondent to a nascar event in muslem costume and the like. but the one i keep thinking about is the break-in at the fbi in which some lefty activists stole documents which revealed the existence of the cointelpro program. this was an activist act which used the media to complete it's aim. this involved, to note in passing, a far more serious crime than mere trespass and is celebrated by the left, though the revelation of cointelpro only revealed that the fbi was investigating groups which stated their intention to overthrow the u.s. government, which is after all, the fbi's job.
Thank you Al Gore for inventing the internet. Without you our news would still be censored and we would believe in man-made global warming.
reader since the beginning, first post. Great site Andrew!
Huffington was a conservative columnist and he worked for her? What is this… a sick little game to these people..propagandizing us, influencing the useful idiot public for their person financial and power gain? One day a devout conservative the next day a communist? Seriously, something is very wrong here…
In fairness to Beckel, he's generally only like that on Hannity's show. (It's all staged, and we know it.)
if you see him during the day, he's quite the definition of decorum…
Thank you, Andrew, you are a hero. John Peter Zenger would be proud…
I believe there are some automated filters that are, or can be, used in conjuction with IntenseDebate. Ranging from scanning for certain words that are deemed offensive, to other, more complicated potential problems. In such cases, I have occasionally seen messages that state that the comment must be approved by a site admin before it will appear.
Like other automated processes, these occasionally produce results that are a bit mystifying …
FWIW. Just another icon of the times we live in. Robo-Censorship!
Goes to show that NPR has a variety of viewpoints.
"He was charged with trying to get into Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu’s federal office in New Orleans under false pretenses to commit a felony."
What kind of felony? A 300 million dollar bribe possibly? Oh no, my bad, that was another occupant of the office.
I agree with others here. NPR is irrelevant, funded by tax dollars and a mouthpiece of all things liberal.
Well 73% of all firefighters in the US are volunteers. Fire and police protection are run by corporations, yes Cities are corporations, counties are corporations, only States have sovereignty.
The Constitution charges the federal government with protecting the people, (Raising armies, providing for the common defense) Not with propaganda (state run radio or television or newspapers)
City charters call for police and fire protection.
Why are liberals so ignorant when it comes to civics?
I hope you're not calling me a liberal….
If you're saying the Fed Gov shouldn't be involved in city/state police and fire fighters I agree. This should be city/state level. The fed should get out of the funding/blackmailing business.
That's the great article! I just pass 'n read it, two thumbs up!
