White House Orders: No Terror Trials in NYC

The White House ordered the Justice Department to consider other places to try the 9/11 terror suspects after a wave of opposition to holding the trial in lower Manhattan.
The White House took the action hours after Mayor Bloomberg called Attorney General Eric Holder to say he would “prefer that they did it elsewhere.”
“It would be an inconvenience at the least, and probably that’s too mild a word for people that live in the neighborhood and businesses in the neighborhood,” Bloomberg told reporters.
“There are places that would be less expensive for the taxpayers and less disruptive for New York City.”
State leaders have railed against a plan to try Khalid Shaikh Mohammed in Manhattan federal court since Holder proposed it last month.
The order to consider new venues does not change the White House’s position that Mohammed should be tried in civilian court.
“President Obama is still committed to trying Mohammed and four other terrorist detainees in federal court,” spokesman Bill Burton said Thursday.
“He agrees with the attorney general’s opinion that … he and others can be litigated successfully and securely in the United States of America, just like others have,” Burton said.
Burton referred questions about the location debate to the Justice Department.

I applaud President Obama's pragmatic willingness to consider the minority opposition party's input on this decision.
Obama has pleaded for bipartisan solutions to the issues facing our country, and he is proving that it isn't a one sided request. He is setting the example that, hopefully, others will follow. He listened to the input of those who felt a venue other than NYC would be more appropriate, he weighed that input, and made an informed decision.
That's called bipartisan leadership, folks! Learn something here.

His idea of bipartisanship is agreeing with him. Anything less he considers obstructionist. So no one is fooled here. He suggests moving it because it would be a political disaster for him to have it in NYC, plus at a cost of $200M per year for approximately 3 years, a sum the almost bankrupt NYC doesn't have. Not to mention the psychological turmoil and logistical chaos it would cause. This way he leaves it up to his sidekick, Hack Holder, and can thus hold the joker accountable for whatever outcome this disastrous decision may cause. If Obamao must satsify his leftist base and refuses to return them to GITMO, then move it to Chicago. He can house KSM and the other loons at his currently empty mansion. Wouldn't want to inconvenience any of them.
KSM isn't being accused of an ordinary criminal offense, he's accused of war crimes. There is a drastic difference. I'm just guessing here, but I would assume that Holder's law firm, which has been defending the detainees at GITMO, would stand to make a lot more money out of a civil trial than a military one. Can anyone weigh in on this?

The Daily News and the New York Times have been in DIRECT CONFLICT about this story.
The Daily News first stated that Obama "orders" the relocation of the trial; the Times states that Obama has "left any decision on moving the trial to the Justice Department.”
The Daily News has now backed down, changing its headline from "orders" to "asks." However, they have not covered their tracks! I am in contact with the newsrooms, reporters and editors about this discrepancy, and am covering my efforts in a live thread, here:

I smell a set up. To begin with, civil trials for war criminals are ludicrous insanity. This 'trial' is all being s taged to aggrandize Obama primarily to start the re-election campaign with the taxpayer picking up the tab. NYC was simply a 'give up' in the plan to make the spin that we approve of this crap and were just unhappy with the venue. It's never what it seems to be with this guy.

I vote for Jarbidge, Nevada – The most remote location in the lower 48. Everyone there is armed and shoots reasonably well. In fact, I think the good folks of that burg would look forward to the chance to shoot terrorists.

That was a good one. Durbin D-IL is cooperating with Obama as we speak to move the trial to southern Illinois (anywhere outside of Chicago) in another bold move to stimulate the local economy. Of course the attached stimulus money will be safely ensconced in a bank at the epicenter of HOPE and CHANGE. Of course we hope that there will be a little change left. But I wd.n't bank on it.

We spent millions of dollars creating a state of the art courtroom at GITMO.
If not, rent a barge and tow it out to sea, 20 miles out. Don't let them on US soil. Make sure there are scuttling charges, so if attacked, it goes to the bottom. All bad guys on board.
The answer to all this is to take NO prisoners. No trial is needed if there are no prisoners taken. Either that, or let the military do it's damn job and try them by military tribunal in someplace, oh I don't know, like Gitmo, for example.
I have yet to hear one salient arguement that would justify a civilian trial PERIOD! All I've heard is that we have judicial system that is capable of handling this trial and they guarantee a conviction. Well that has never been the question. All this does is give public voice to these extremest to spout their venom for all the world to hear, and cost the American taxpayer millions of dollars in the process. Keep them in GITMO, give them a military tribunal, and kill them. Be done with it! There is absolutely NOTHING to gain from a civilian trial.

KSM is an unlawful enemy combatant and can be tried using a military tribunal under the Military Commisions Act of 2006. That Act does not affect the rights of habeus corpus for US Citizens.

Concentration camps most certainly did exist before the war crime trials, which were held in Nuremberg.
The ICC, located in The Hague, was constructed in 2002. The ICC cannot exercise jurisdiction in KSM's case…sorry. Besides the court is only there to complement existing judicial systems or has jurisdiction when a country cannot prosecute a crime…Congo, Darfur, etc.

Just as part of the problem with having the trials in lower Manhattan is that business will be cut off for at least FIVE YEARS. That effects all of us, mainly due to the financial district. The same is as true for Chicago; perhaps more so, sue to the fact that Chicago is the main commodities trading center for this nation !

Chicago is an excellent choice, the corruption of the Chicago Democrat Machine can be on display to the world. Not only will the people of the world have a chance to witness the stinking swamp of corruption that produced Obama; but the people of Chicago will have the opportunity to witness and realize the reality of Chicago corruption on a international scale.

You make a good point –

… and that our government can control the outcome of any court case despite the presence of constitutional protections if it is politically desirable that a person is found guilty.
… and that people may have their constitutional right see the evidence against them if the government decides to declare such evidence 'classified' or to deny such evidence for political reasons (such as the trial lowering poll numbers).
… and that the results (determination of guilt or innocence) of a trial by 12 of your peers is of no significance if the government decides otherwise – you can still be held without explanation even if found 'not guilty' of the charges made against you.
Somehow, I'm thinking this an attempt to destroy the perception of 'fair trial' in this country as part of the progressive's assault on the US court system. (This would be a sequal to the SOTU attack on the Supreme Court.)
