We were elected to make tough choices, not run from them. On Thursday, House Democrats sparked widespread outrage by voting to authorize the use of the controversial “Slaughter Solution” to force amassive government takeover of health care through the House without voting on it. They voted to protect themselves instead...

I met Johnny cash once back in the late 80's. I was working as a stagehand at the old Capitol Theatre (now the Capitol Center for the Arts) in Concord, NH. He sat down with everyone, local crew included, to eat dinner before the show. I grew up having to listen to country music, my Dad was a big fan of it. Later in life I find myself listening to Cash's music and have a much better appreciation for it now than when I was growing up.
Is it a slow news day? Are you giving us a break from the daily "gloom and doom"?
I grew up with rock. It wasn't till years later that I heard a local program by a guy who called himself "fast eddie." He played mostly older stuff (incl. JC). Long story short I really enjoyed listening to country after all, and like you stated have a much better appreciation for it. WQNA 88.3
Is that a picture of Folsom prison or the upcoming State of the Union address???
Both are full of deviants, cheats, liars, thieves, and pond scum…
Caddy,
What's wrong with a little nostalgia?
You wouldn't believe how many kids now days, that love heavy metal and rock 'n roll, also love Johnny Cash!!!
He caught thier attention by adding in MANY modern day hits as covers in his last album.
Look for Hurt and The Man Comes Around off of "American IV: The Man Comes Around"
take some time and find the Video for Hurt, done by the Man In Black.
AWESOME and POWERFUL.
One just has to like JC. That song One Piece At A Time was simply classic.
Absolutely nothing. I was just not expecting a Johnny Cash thread this morning.
Indeed. The video of Hurt (a JC cover of a Nine Inch Nails song) is GREAT.
Is that Lyndon Johnson, front row, second from the right?
Caddy,
Boy Named Sue came out when I was about 16. Learned to love dear Johnny over the years. Guess we can expect anything with Open Thread huh?
That is an insult to inmates everywhere. Sure, they're bad, but compared to Democrats (and not a few RINOs)?
“It is almost impossible to distinguish a politician from a gangster.” (Will Durant, 1931)
Good eye!
I wish Cash was alive today – he could entertain the Gitmo detainees.
"shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die…" [creepy laughter from the inmates after that line...always gets me]
One of the greatest live albums of all time. RIP J-$
Sam Phillips was either the finest kind of genius or the luckiest promoter in the world. Think of the stars from those first sessions— Johnny Cash, Charlie Rich, Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis…who else?
nolotrippen: Thanks for sharing that one!
Here's another ;
“It is terrible to contemplate how few politicians are hanged.”
~~ G.K. Chesterton, in The Cleveland Press, March 1st, 1921
You wanted a break from "Avatar". Here it is and you're STILL not happy.
His cover of Soundgarden's "Rusty Cage" rocks harder than the original. Cash's take on "Personal Jesus" (Depeche Mode) is done a lot more soulfully.
You call whopping someone upside the head with a 6-string "entertaining"?
Love that!
I thought Johnnie Cash was a pay toilet. Some one explaned the Jonnnie was a country singer.
Good music is just good music…It doesn't matter the type…Johnny Cash won over the Heavy Metal crowd when he did cover songs from bands like SoundGarden and Nine Inch Nails …The NIN song "Hurt" was probably the saddest song I ever heard him sing and it was right before his death..
I agree…….
Cash made it ok for rockers, punks, alts and goths to listen to country.
his version of Hurt is in my opinion a self sun eulogy and better than the original
Where's the congressional hearings on this !!!! Great question to ask your Congressmen…. Oh that's right, it's nto the evil oil companies..it's just the Fed who we have no idea who they are !!!!
The central bank (Federal Reserve) announced Tuesday it logged a record windfall of $52.1 billion. Of that total, a record of $46.1 billion gets turned over to the Treasury Department.
It marks both the biggest profit and payment to Treasury on records dating back to 1914, when the Fed began operating.
If Johnnie Cash signed with Leonard Chess would he have received the same compensation as Bo Diddley?
"FU Warden!" – FU OBAMA! – Love to see it at the state of the union.
We battle for a renewal of a nation, while they strive for a rebirth of slavery. Our kings thumb their nose at we the people, and thus we have come to the moment of decision will you accept their lies or will you stand by your birth right. Generations have given their all to give you this birth right of freedom will you protect the American promise or will you walk willing into slavery?
The government parties are full of grahams and they have all the power and money..
Even though I battle government parties members here it is to show them the light that the party doesn’t want your answers. Show all the grahams across this country that freedom and your vote comes with a price.
Register unaffiliated and fight back for they will not listen until they are forced.
They can’t win without party members and as long as you stay a party member they will always call you fringe and laugh. and win.
Registering unaffiliated throws off the gerrymandering during a time of redistricting.
They have not heard your words, because you shout at a golden wall, take your power back, register unaffiliated and prove to them you mean business.
I'm a teen of the 70's, a long hair heavy metal hellion, bass/guitar player, lived in Austin, Tx for a long time (soon to return) and "discovered" J.C. a few years back in conjunction with and because of "Walk the Line" and I'm a big J.C. fan.
Doesn't get much better…
true! see above…Jamesb
Johnny Cash sure wouldn't approve of the Corporate hacks that run this site. He was for the downtrodden. The poor man on the street. Beitbergs job is maintaining the status quo.
The FR got far more than Exxon got that Obama went off on and they (Federal Reserve) are a private company too!
No Hypocrisy here!!! It's the way of "Mao" and MARXIST!
If Johnny Cash was doing these concerts today; he would have to sing the songs twice. Once in English and once in Spanish. PC you know.
Johnny Cash would not like the new "National Stability" police force:

Wonder if you are aware – that laugher was piped in from another time in the event. Just goes to show you how manipulated your media is.

Speaking of slavery …
The topics for these “Open Threads” seem to be selected on a ‘This Day In History’ basis. In that spirit, I’d like to mention one of the other notable events that occurred on January 13. On this day in the year 1869, a national convention of black leaders met in Washington, D.C. ; Frederick Douglass was elected president.
Frederick Douglass was born a slave in February of 1818, in Talbot County, Maryland. After several earlier attempts, Douglass successfully escaped from bondage on September 3, 1838. He is perhaps best remembered for his (first) autobiography, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, published in 1845.
In the course of time, Douglass became one of the most famous black men in the country, known for his orations on the condition of the black race, and on other issues. Here is his description of Abraham Lincoln : “Mr. Lincoln was not only a great President, but a great man — too great to be small in anything. In his company I was never in any way reminded of my humble origin, or of my unpopular color.”
I would like to ask everyone who reads this to pray for the people of Haiti.
They were hit by a pretty awful earthquake yesterday & the people there are suffering pretty bad.
Great Song! "…One piece at a time and it didn't cost me a dime"
The Ballad of Ira Hayes….a classic!
says the middle aged hack who thinks he's some kind of musician…
Look at all the white faces! 1968!
I think walk the line is an awesome movie, it shows the great work of jonny cash in a great way and is an adequate way to pay him tribute.
Great Blog. Just not sure why I am up in the middle of the night reading this.
