C-SPAN Asks to Televise Health Care Negotiations
by PubliusJust before New Year’s, C-SPAN Chairman and CEO Brian Lamb sent a letter to Congressional leadership, requesting permission to televise negotiations around the final health care reform legislation. The letter was addressed to Speaker Nancy Pelosi, GOP Leader Rep. John Boehner, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and GOP Senate Leader Mitch McConnell.
The letter notes:
Now that the process moves to the critical stage of reconciliation between the Chambers, we respectfully request that you all the public full access, through television, to legislation that will affect the lives of every American.
During the 2008 Presidential campaign, then-candidate Obama promised to do exactly this; televise the negotiations on C-SPAN. From a debate in January 2008:
That’s what I will do in bringing all parties together, not negotiating behind closed doors, but bringing all parties together, and broadcasting those negotiations on C-SPAN so that the American people can see what the choices are, because part of what we have to do is enlist the American people in this process.
And at a town hall meeting in August 2008:
But what we will do is, we’ll have the negotiations televised on C-SPAN, so that people can see who is making arguments on behalf of their constituents, and who are making arguments on behalf of the drug companies or the insurance companies. And so, that approach, I think is what is going to allow people to stay involved in this process.
Of course, just days after receiving the offer from C-SPAN, Democrats resumed private negotiations behind close doors:
Congressional Democrats are embarking on an abbreviated negotiation to save Reid the hassle of overcoming more procedural hurdles, but that means the resulting negotiations will be held behind closed-doors as the various stakeholders push for final changes. Liberal Democrats in the House have taken exception with the revised process, but most aides argue a drawn-out conference negotiation would give Senate Republicans too many opportunities to derail the process.

It is amazing to me in this day in age that the media does not realize the ride they are being taken on. Every media outlet should be jumping on this like crazy. Fox should be hitting this hard every day so the back room deals are not there. If I were the legislature I would not want it televised. After all, if I voted for it I likely did so without reading it or fully understanding the bill. In a public discussion I might actually have to make an attempt to comprehend the consequences of the legislation and articulate why it is good for the citizenry. I might actually have to strip away some of the make up and reveal that no matter how well made up, the pig is still pig. Wait, since it will just be democrats, there will be no debate, just serving portions of the pig around the room.
At a fundamental level, the individual mandate creates an obligation, accrued at birth, for every citizen in the U.S. Not only does it appear to violate the letter and the spirit of the constitution, it presumes that we accept that an imperial central government is more moral than the individual and actually has a conscience. What do you think?

The Dems won't take a chance at allowing their discussions to be held in the public eye. They've already demonstrated their disdain for the public to witness what they do. Remember Nancy Pelosi's promise to post the bill on the internet for all to see for 72 hours. Obamas promise of full transparancy, C-Span coverage. Harry Reid locking the bill in his office until it is "scored by the CBO", then rush to voting before anyone can read the full 2,000+ page abomination. Then they go and do just the opposite. They truly believe that they are above reproach and should be "trusted".

As an unpaid member of a Charter School Board at a school with 500 students, and a measly 2 million dollar budget, no more than 2 board members could meet to discuss Board business unless we called an executive session (allowable for a VERY narrow range of topics) and tape recorded the proceedings. Why are closed door meetings like this allowed to go on at the Federal level?

Awesome! Thanks for getting to the heart of the matter! The Constitution is being trampled daily, hourly, each and every second that these clowns are in congress. There should be one term and you're out. That way these demagogues will be forced to live under what they pass and will be more careful to take into consideration the people,not the politicians and lobbyists. They should be offic-ing in their home states. There is no reason to be enthroned in DC like royalty. That way they may even listen to their actual constituents. They can use computers to meet and do the votes. This would make many lose their nerve and quit.

Pelosi lets C-Span come in for 3 days or a week and Obama gets to say he kept his promise. Meanwhile all the little deals have already been made and the passage of the bill is already guarenteed. What did the colonists say about no taxation without representation? I don't feel well represented with my elected legislative member being locked out of these meetings.

In Sociology, we learned that their are two basic personality types, "Internals," which this country was founded by felt that they controlled their own destiny, but Jesuits came early to work on changing that American character), and the "Externals," who believe that they can not control their own destiny. Do you realize since FDR, America has allowed only "external personality types" citizenship in America. Now, especially including all the recent immigrants, we have a majority of Americans that willingly will accept a "New World Order" Dictator! Our unionized school systems from the 1790's through the Jesuits, etc., also have been reinforcing this planned switch in our national character, which initially was of a very stubborn people (i.e., Israel, including Judah!).

Given that the Democrats are trying to ping pong the bill through and are likely very concerned about getting a health reform bill passed quickly, televised coverage is not something that serves their purposes. Like all politicians of all stripes, when they want to get something done, they will take the steps necessary to accomplish their goals. When we are on the side of their goals, we consider them efficient, but when we oppose what they are doing, we come up will all sorts of names to call them and we call for transparency. What is needed is to restrain their ability to alter process for expediency when it suites them, but unfortunately those who get into power don't typically like to impose restraints upon themselves.

I thought that we have a democracy. We the People have the absolute right to know. How can these proceedings possible by hidden from public scrutiny?
