A good year, not for those of us who are Jewish. 1492 we were expelled from Spain the day before Columbus set sail and those who remained were subject to the Inquisition for hundreds of years. So it depends on your persepctive.

Yes, that was very unfortuneate. However, The Israelites were punished by The Creator God for their violations of the Old Testament Laws. The 1st Major punishment was for their nation to be captured by Babylon, which lasted for about 70 years only. The 2nd Major Punishment was to be dispersed among all of the nations and have their Temple destroyed, their language gone. However, they would be returned to their land In The Latter Times and have their language restored. In addition, they would rebuild their Temple for the last time, which will be taken over for a short time by The Anti-Christ (Daniel's 70th Week hasn't started yet and will happen in the future) Pray that you are worthy to escape all these things.

Anecdote: Close to thirty years ago I played a few times with a student of Segovia, graduate of Juilliard, so he said. I worked at a high end art gallery, and this guy would play the openings, absolutely amazing player. Days later, I loaded up my Bass rig and went to where his band was rehearsing. I'm not through it yet, but jihadi Islam seems, from reading this work, to have been even then just a masquerade to convince the "soldiers of Allah" to fight for whatever wannabe Caliph against Christians. It has a familiar ring to it in today's context.
I've visited the Alhambra and Generalife and they are exquisite, well worth a day at least to explore, sit in the beautiful fountained gardens, and soak up the atmosphere of that era. They provide a jarring contrast to the Islam of today causing me to speculate on how religions in general that have proven to bring such magnificence to civilizations also bring a dark side too often used to subjugate and imprison for the selfish aggrandizement of a few slick talkers…hmmm…that sounds oddly familiar right here on our shores in this day and age, does it not?

The black part of who are now called the "BLACK IRISH" supposedly came from the Spanish who managed to survive the sinking of the Spanish Armada. That's what I learned, in school.
Yes, there are Jewish Irish people; one was even a mayor of Dublin, IIRC, a while back. But most of the Sephardim ( those who weren't conversos ) fled to Portugal, Italy, and parts of Europe that were held by the Ottoman Empire.

Yes, but your antecedents were blessed to have had Ireland as a safety net. Who would want to hang around in Spain or other parts of Europe when you could mingle with God's Other Chosen People, we Irish?
The tragedies of yesteryear sometimes result in blessings for progeny. Our family tree traces back to the so-called "Black Irish" who I am given to believe are at least partly descended from Jewish immigrants to southern Ireland.
The result for me is that I believe I'm blessed with the commingling of Irish and Hebrew genes, a potent combination by any lights.

the story of the Armada off loading swarthy Spaniards onto the green hills of Ireland is a good story, but not true. Any Spaniard that landed onshore, either Scotland or Ireland, was immediately massacred by locals and by English soldiery.
So, we are back to the Jewish diaspora. A lot of those on the Spanish piers in 1492 were invited by rulers in the various Germanies to go NORTH, which many of them did.
The real sufferer in all this? Spain. But any country that treats its Jewish population in this way has a very hard time of it. G-d makes sure of that.

You are correct, it does depend on ones perspective. From my perspective, 500 years later in America, 1492 was a very good year.
I can understand why the Spanish Crown would want the Kingdom to adhere to its faith. You know, a house divided and so on. The British Crown is doomed for such a reason. America is doomed if we don't wake up to the fact that the Koran is antithetcal to the Constitution.

The Alhambra is one of my favorite places on the planet. The Moors created their version of Paradise, with fountains and flowers and running water all over, not to mention the gorgeous arabesques in tile, which are vibrant even today.
You can go to the Alhambra at night, where they've got the lights down low, and it is by gum the most romantic place you could ever find.
