I read the same article last night and had pretty much the same reaction. The latest underwear bomber will probably get to "rehabilitate himself" working with Czar Jennings illustrating how not to put explosives near your nutz. Unbelievable.
Frankly, here is what I suggest.
We are at war. Gitmo does need to be closed. It needs off the public radar screen. It needs to become a non issue. The public doesn't really need to know what happens next.
Then, the military needs to set up a special "resort" for our little brown brethern that are unfortunate enough to be captured. A place so hideous, so midevil, so draconian that they will have an incentive to change their mindsets. Islam is a culture of the blade,and that is all they respect, and fear.

Just spent the last two years in Ireland with my husband (he is an Irish national.) They have socialized medicine (which sucks) the government is the primary employer and taxes 55% of the income in the form of pensions, levies and other taxes and the government is a form of aristocratic control as the elected officials are promoted by a party which is controlled by the wealthy elites. Their Finance Minister just had his pancreatic cancer announced on public television without his consent (because the government owns the health records…aka socialized universal healthcare) and there is panic because he is the third generation Lennihan who has inherited his seat in the Dail.
They need a new government too. Ironically, the passive aggressive nature of the Fighting Irish will take care of that. Everyone just quit working because it was more lucrative to be on unemployment than to work. Gee…sounds oddly familiar to what every economist says will happen when a form of socialism takes over.

The Republic of Ireland does have a socialized health system but it is not universal. There are several private insurance companies who charge moderate fees and very many ordinary middle class people have private health plans that prove very satisfactory.
You're basically on an anti-Fianna Fáil* rant here, a party for which the designation "aristocratic" is too fatuous to merit a response. If FF is controlled by "wealthy elites" at least – and at last – they're our own home-grown wealthy elites for a change. How becoming the 51st state of the Union with a Democratic and Republican duopoly (stinkingly wealthy elites, anyone?) would improve that aspect of our supposed woes is something you don't mention.
The economy, like that of the US, is in recession and with the dramatic fall-off of tax revenues the public debt has ballooned. The government has raised taxes and made severe cuts in expenditure as well as significant cuts in public employees wages and in social welfare payouts across the board. A correct and courageous approach almost unique in a modern social democratic state. (California could learn a thing or two from us.) I would have thought that your apparent libertarian predilections would have induced you to approve at least the latter action.
The Government that you're so eager to see the back of is the same in essence that presided over the Celtic Tiger miracle of the past 15 years where those of us who actually live in Ireland experienced a rise in our standard of living quite unprecedented in our sad and sorry history. There is no doubt that this phenomenal economic expansion would not have occurred under any opposition government dominated, as it would be, in policy matters, if not numerically, by the Labour Party whose leader, Éamonn Gilmore, was a member in a previous incarnation of the avowedly Marxist Democratic Left aka Workers' Party before the latter amalgamated with (some would say subsumed) the old Labour Party.

And Hillary Clinton etc, etc. It goes with any political territory and doesn't reflect on the competence nor integrity of any given politician. By their deeds and their deeds alone can ye know them.
How the leak concerning Mr. Lenihan's health is related to the "government owning the records" is a mystery, especially since he had booked himself into a private clinic for the tests which ended in such bad news. Perhaps he being such a prominent public figure meant that even non-governmental record keepers gossiped. Just saying.
Brian Lenihan is a fine upstanding individual and an excellent politician. His work as Finance Minister has been both sagacious and extraordinarily courageous. I can only conclude that your animosity towards him is based on listening to the vicious Left Wing media – which would be anti-Fianna Fáil to their backbone if they had any – that dominates Ireland in a way inconceivable in the US.

Western Canadian provinces and Northwestern US states that have more in common with each other than the rest of their countries and that believe Ottawa and DC are disconnected from their interests already have an organization called "Cascadia" and entered into some agreements that sent their respective national capitals into a tizzy. One of the greatest trips of my life was to Dingle Ireland and Waterford and Dublin. A bar in Dingle inhabited by the locals has a photo of Michael Collins on one side and a Eamon Devolara on the other side. Like to have been a fly on the wall for a few political debates in that place.
The most important thing we should know about modern Ireland is that Eamon DeValera and Fiana Fail were socialists that imposed a socialist society on the Irish. The result: they had the lowest GDP/capita in Western Europe until the capitalist reforms of the 1980's. Capitilism led them to the second highest GDP/capita in Western Europe.
Within the last 30 years the world has witnessed Ireland, India, China begin to creep out of the systemic poverty of Socialism by undertaking capitalist market reforms. Barrack Obama and his ilk of out-dated Mao loving 60's socialists will lead us only into a system of stagnation.

BTW, Fianna Fáil led by De Valera or anybody else never "imposed" anything on Ireland. Any FF government was chosen democratically by the people in many free and open elections since 1932.
The only government that was not elected to office was the Fine Gael/Labour Coalition (1994-1996) which Mary Robinson (then President) installed when the FF government resigned. She refused to dissolve the Dáil (parliament) – the first and only time a President has done so – and used to opportunity to smuggle her Labour Party and their FG fellow-travelers cronies back to power without the benefit of an election, an act of malfeasance which the media covered up because of their desire to carry water for a feminist socialist icon – Can you think of any comparison closer to home?
