Tough questions need to be asked of not just the US security agencies – such as the CIA and the FBI – but also of Britain’s MI6, MI5 and the Metropolitan Police’s counter-terrorist unit.
How can a Muslim student, whose name appears on a US law enforcement database, be granted a visa to travel to America, allegedly acquire an explosive device from Yemen, a country awash with al-Qaeda terrorists, and avoid detection from the world’s most sophisticated spy agencies?
Every intelligence agency across the world is fully aware that the targets of choice for al-Qaeda and its numerous affiliates and sympathisers are airliners – preferably those flying to the US. Yet Abdulmutallab seems to have avoided detection in both Nigeria and Holland when he passed through the various security checks at Lagos and Schiphol airports respectively.
Embarrassingly for the Washington, Lagos airport had recently been given the “all clear” by the US’s Transportation Security Administration, an agency established in the wake of the 9/11 attacks which was supposed to improve the security on American airliners.
Attacking airlines is not exactly new territory for al-Qaeda. After 9/11, Richard Reid, a British Muslim convert, tried to blow up a transatlantic airliner by detonating explosives hidden in his shoes. More recently, Britain was the base for the so-called liquid bomb plot when a group of British Islamists plotted to destroy up to 10 US bound airliners in a series of attacks designed to kill thousands.

She suggested that such an airline would quickly become the most popular in the US and would force other airlines to follow suit lest they find their planes totally empty, or at least populated only by security risks, which wouldnt' be in their best busines interest anyway.

Here's a question: how do you detect a completely non-metallic explosive device sewn into the crotch? For that matter, how do you prevent non-metallic explosives hidden in body cavities?
Don't mistake me for one of the Obama administration's pixillated defenders, but it seems to me that these are fair questions to ask. In all fairness, we could just as well have been asking them during the Bush administration.
That said, I think that we should respect Abdulmutallab's religious beliefs and should be granted his wish in a way that doesn't endanger innocent lives. These repeated intelligence failures point to the need for a new agency that would deal with the terrorist threat, domestic and abroad. Neither the CIA or FBI are capable or equipped to deal with terrorism. The other alternative is to allow the CIA to be able to spy within the borders of the United States. Even then they are not a law enforcement agency. The FBI is but has done a terrible job at dealing with terrorism. They are not equipped intelligence agency. Therefore, the solution is obvious. The alternative to such an agency, is full body cavity searches at the airports. And who would allow that?
Can we PLEASE now profile terrorists instead of subjecting every traveler to useless shoe checking and other meaningless security activities? DHS is a joke. Twice we have been LUCKY that the item to be detonated didn't work as planned. We're lucky that passengers took matter into their own hands (not the authorities sworn to protect us) and saved the day.
