This is one of the most amazing stories of WWII. I am always amazed at the bravery of the US soldier. Had I been able to join, I gladly would have especially since 9/11.
As far as the Nuts reply, I cannot imagine the amount of guts it took to say and do the right thing when you are surrounded by the bad guys.
Obama would have proposed more "talks" with Hitler, and recalled Mcauliffe for being too adversarial towards the Nazis. And then of course he'd have blamed it all on the Jews anyway… as he is doing in the ME today, right alongside Feuhrer-wannabe Ahmedinijad..
GAWD, I miss real American heroes like McAuliffe and Patraeus being heralded, rather than Obama's team of liars, thieves, gangsters, radical malcontents, and child-molesters that the MSM promote and cover-for… what a bunch of trash.
And just forget "heroes" for a minute… does Barack Obama even know any NORMAL people? Only America-hating freaks, from what I can see… it's repuslive to those of us who love this country…

Remember when America still had Men like this to look up to?
a perfect example of selflessness. the heroes of WWII knew they had a job to do, and that it would cost lives. i have a tough time wrapping my head around the events that some of those people had to deal with.
Merry Christmas! I will never forget how Congress grinched my Christmas of 2009!
1) I have wondered for decades whether the real reply was something like "F*&& Off", and "Nuts" was the Army censored version appropriate for that time.
2) Hijacking this thread on a positive note: Doonesbury comic strip has turned on Obama in the last two days; with MIke, the character with the radio talk show, calling him out for failure to keep campaign promises. (This turn is something that would be mentioned in news articles if we had a Republican President. But it is not noted in a Google "News" search.)
I don't have the link that was posted elsewhere, but you should see what some Dr. is saying about these same Obie traits. She really rails on him hard, interestingly pointing out the same things the right does but from the opposite veiwpoint.
:~} forgot to mention that article was in Huffington Post.. the extreme liberal haven.
Beck had some authors on his show yesterday and they were discussing heros- real ones and fictitious ones. It was a pretty interesting discussion on how the masses predictably react towards each during differing major events in history.
One of the authors is offering schools across the country framed pictures of George Washington at about cost. He says he's trying to bring our nations historical heros back into the forefront. It's just one example but there does seem to be an awakening going on. I wish we just wouldn't have embarassed ourselves so badly by going to sleep for so long.
We all know that we have present day heros in the mid-east, and that never seems to get published. I was trying to think of Civilian Heroes…and we had several stories this past year, when local, Milwaukee civilians came to the rescue for persons in life or death situations. Us conservatives may be losing battles, but remember we win the war…for the benefit of The Kingdom.
I always wondered if that is verbatim, or sanitized for the more puritanical media of the day.
yaknow, at times I've wondered how the future will view the two reporters who exposed ACORN. I consider them heros, and if the masses will follow through and kill ACORN while we have the chance I believe the future may see it that way too.
Heros of the American people are (historically) not always in the military but thank God they exist en masse (or did). One such patriot that comes to mind…. President Ronald Reagan…. This man loved America and deeply believed in the exceptionalism of the American people. He was an inspiration to most.
Contrast this wonderful man with the likes of Obama, Reid, Pelosi, Dodd, Rangel, Schumer, Durbin et. al. Kinda makes ya wanna puke…..shaking head.
An incredible statement, in an incredible time, with incredible Americans, “The Battling Bastards of Bastogne.” We must remember, after General McAuliffe made his now famous quote the citizen soldier held the ground and effectively began to turn “The Battle of Bulge,” leading to a word that Barry hates, …victory!
Audie Murphy, son of Texas sharecroppers was 16 years old when he joined the Army. He was the most decorated American combat soldier of World War II. Audie fought in 9 major campaigns in Europe, and among his awards and decorations (33) was the Medal of Honor. After the war he became a movie actor and starred in “To Hell and Back,” a movie based on his autobiography.

Real courage in the face of horror. These are heros whom had faith in fellow Americans.
I believe the actual reply was "Balls!" (essentially the same thing) but it had to be euphemized for those who also didn't know or appreciate what FUBAR stands for.
I met a 10-year-old girl the other day, a bright girl from a well-educated family. She told me that JFK was the first President and that he was President in 1936. I asked her if she knew who George Washington was and she looked at me, puzzled. I showed her a dollar bill and she admitted she HAD seen his picture. We're never getting anywhere until we take back the schools.
And I agree with you about the embarassment, but the abusers in the school systems have told the same lies to their victims that all abusers tell. (If you tell your parents about this, they won't understand so just keep this between us.)
No, that's verbatim. "Nuts" was considered profane at the time.
[ General Anthony McAuliffe, acting commander of the 101st Airborne Division replied, “Nuts!” ]
Patton: A man that eloquent has to be saved.
To Obama and his Marxist dreams for America, I say: NUTS!
Jeff, I urge you to read about COL Joshua Chamberlain at Little Round top, during the Battle of Gettysburg. he faced mounting casualties, almost out of ammo, facing a fresh enemy with an open left flank. Civilised people will agree that his proper course of action would be surrender. Instead, he attacked in the form of a bayonet charge. Those of us who served know that he had only one choice, to attack and carry the day. He protected the open flank of the Union Army and thereby bought the time needed to defend the overall position. Once again, he HAD NO CHOICE but to do the hard right thing over the easy wrong choice. I submit that BG McAuliffe made the same choice as Chamberlain.
These are the men I think of everytime I put up the American Flag. Thank you for our lives and freedom.
In the days before political correctness and now political pandering, we had real men and women who stood up for what was good and right in the world. They weren't afraid to say what was on their mind, but had the common sense to remain silent if they didn't know what they were talking about. That was our "Greatest Generation". We need to return to those core values and turn away from selfish power and money grabbing, self-centric ideologies of get what is good for me, and screw everyone else. We are "ONE NATION". We will prosper together, or we will all suffer together. If we have appointed leaders that choose to lead us down the path or ruin, then they must be voted out.
Hey, Liberals!
I am a "tea-bagger"; here's my "Nuts!"
…and he was a Pi Kappa Alpha from W Va.
The Malmedy Massacre Dec 17th, 1944
Survivors were killed by a pistol shot to the head, in some cases by English speaking SS who walked among the victims asking if anyone was injured or needed help. Those who responded were shot. A total of 81 Americans were killed in the single worst atrocity against U.S. troops during World War II in Europe.
After the SS troops moved on, three survivors encountered a U.S. Army Colonel stationed at Malmedy and reported the massacre. News quickly spread among U.S. troops that "Germans are shooting POWs." As a result, the troops became determined to hold the lines against the German advance until reinforcements could arrive. Gen. Eisenhower was informed of the massacre. War correspondents in the area also spread the news.
MY GRANDFATHER WAS ONE OF THE 3 SURVIVORS He was shot twice and left for dead

/WoooHooo !
Here's the story. The Germans had sent a message that urged them to surrender, and when McAuliffe read the message, he said "Aw Nuts!" He had the message typed: "To the German Commander: Nuts! The American Commander." He handed it to Col. Joseph "Bud" Harper, who delivered it to the Germans. He then told the Germans, "If you don't understand what 'Nuts' means, in plain English it's the same as 'Go To Hell'. And I will tell you something else, we will kill every goddamn German that tries to break into this city!" From a WWII book from Time-Life.
NUTS?
If the Republicans in the Senate had the balls that God gave a billy goat, they would walk out en masse and not vote on the Health Care fiasco. That would send a message loud and clear to Kommrade Barry and his Politburo of Communist idealogoues in Washington.
But that is simply wishful thinking. Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, acting in concert have emasculated Mitch McConnell and John McCain, and left them wandering aimlessly looking for their nutz………….

The most important question in the Obamacare debate should be:
Where are all the nuclear power plants?
WHERE ARE ALL THE LAWSUITS?
http://naturalfake.wordpress.com/2009/12/22/where...
It's time to start playing the left's game.
I believe it was something along the lines of, "Vas iss das "NUTS?"
"It means, go to Hell."
And I wouldn't trust Time-Life to get it right.
We need to defend our own Republic right now in every way and everywhere. No more puting up and shutting up to listen to the followers of the Won. I will consider a face-to-face put down reason to respond physically. No rules of engagement here.
We didn't inherit the same country our founders tried to give us but through the tests of time and examples like the men at Bastogne, we still have it in us. Even the deranged liberal fools have the capacity to have a rational thought.
The actions of our present government have proven beyond all doubt that they have no intention of following the People's Laws and Constitution. They must go. By any means necessary – Must Go!
In honor of my hero-Norman B. 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment with jumps at Normandy and Holland and suffered frostbite at Bastogne living in one of the harshest December winters in his summer uniform-and he is still alive at 92! We need more men like him.
According to my reading, McAuliffe's response was his harshest swear word–he did not curse.
In honor of my Dad. 12th Armored Division. (Please go to the website, Liberation of the Concentration Camps.)

This is why I have MUCH to say when obama's antisemitism is discussed. Nuts to you obama!!!
Thank you.
I never asked you. Is your Dad still alive?
If I remember 1968, that was the year of the Tet offensive, it sounds like you were in a fire base? Or up the Perfume River?
Nuts to Congress!!!!
Exactly. "Nuts" as in "testacles". Carried roughly the same weight and meaning as "eff off" would in a similar situation today.
Our Army is full of men like that. Too bad it stops at the WH.
What a stark contrast Obama is to someone with guts and courage.
I find it difficult to be happy about Lefties browbeating Obama for not being Left enough.
They STILL DO! They STILL wear the uniform of America's finest! I'm a twenty year Navy Vet (Viet Nam as well) and I'd be glad to put my uniform on and serve side by side with these "heroes" – most of them from 'Small Town USA'. The sad review of this occurred back in the 60's and 70's when our soldiers were spat upon by the very people running this Government now. There would be MORE heroes IF the politicians would give them a break and let them do what they know best, something called "Preserve, Protect and Defend the U.S. Constitution against ……".
Look around you — even that frail "bag boy" at the local supermarket may end up being a MEDAL OF HONOR winner. It happened a lot! It is something that was instilled within us from hard work, respect and caring for our neighbors, and a steep family nucleus. WHO's taking that away from us?
American History is filled with heroes … and always will be so long as we have that personal integrity, personal responsibility, and carry that "can do" attitude that got us through two World Wars — and one very costly Civil War. Even today how many have forgotten what happened to America's UNITY hours after 9/11/2001?
Little known are the missions flown by the glider pilots of WWII who brought in supplies to the 101st and the others defending Bastogne. These were one-way missions. The glider pilots knew that once they landed, they were there for the duration with the 101st for better or worse.
The Ninth Troop Carrier Command put out a call for about 40 volunteers to fly those glider resupply missions into Bastogne. Well over 100 volunteered. Several were killed in the missions, but the resupply effort succeeded bringing in badly-needed medical supplies, doctors, nurses, food, and ammo.
Contrary to the dictates of the Geneva Convention, the Germans captured most of the 101st's medical personnel and held them captive depriving the defenders of Bastogne adequate medical care.
Those men and women had what it takes. We now have men and women who have what it takes and for them, this Christmas season, I give high thanks for their bravery and commitment. God bless 'em.
My Father served with Patton in WWII (even as far as Prague, Czechoslovakia (before they had to STOP and give it to the Russian Red Army). The reply was EXACTLY as stated … I remember our sharing war stories (mine of Viet Nam) —
Surrender was NOT an option, especially after the Malmady Massacre (captured G.I.s mowed down by the SS execution squads) .. but that very determination and sheer guts is what allowed them to leave the murder fields of Normandy – and STAND FAST in places like Bastogne … even when the SS Panzers were bearing down on them.
"NUTS" was "balls to the wall" HELL NO!!
True above as well .. we also have modern day heroes in Harm's Way ALL OVER THE WORLD .. and yet not a word from the Press — WHY? I think we know the answer …. We have a new C.I.C. and the PRESS is no longer pressing!
It's not necessarily a matter of guts, sometimes it's a clear choice – get captured & most likely be tortured to death or go out taking as many as you can. I ran into a similar instance in Viet Nam 1968 when we got overran. We focused like the trained brotherhood that we were & survived. It's the "burn the boats" scenario.
Thanks Guy! I stand CORRECTED on the spelling of Malmedy … but I remember my Father saying how much it DID motivate the rest.
My hat is off to your Grandfather.!
I only wish my father was around during the 50th anniversary of Normandy — but his stories and photos (many) I will treasure to remind myself of what it was all about.
Yes, Cowboy and he has never voted for a Democratic President in his life. (He said, "As well as I can remember." I am very proud of him.
Im reading all these comments and I agree…we need more American Heroes like this. But I dont think for a minute that they are not out there any more. I have one qyestion for you….What are you doing about it besides sitting in front of your computer bitching about the current situation. Are you organizing your friends, your family, your co workers to try andpt an end to these things. Will you be out there in 2010 trying to take back your country ? Or will you go quietly to your local polling office and quietly submit your vote and then return home and read about the outcome and say well crap…..Get out there and inform people……Its never to late to STAND UP for what YOU believe in !!!!
Well said Guy!! We tried doing this before the election, but most of it either fell on deaf ears or people were afraid to vote because of that Sword of Damocles P.C. [i.e. if you don't vote for this guy you are a RACIST!].
If anything, and even in this Small Town USA — word is gathering FAST! And even the MSM doesn't have a clue as to how FAR REACHING it is getting lately!
Straight Ticket voting is what hurt us in N.C.
Ironic that most of the people I know who voted for …. the current Administration are now the LOUDEST in passing the word! So fret not! Even the local Democrats are ….. a "little" upset!
I'll also be out there in 2010 — from January FIRST on!
We NEED to take back our country and throw ALL of them out of office, and get some new Reaganite blood in there.
Regards!
I will read it, sounds good.

Prepare for the Onslaught from Barry bragging Non Stop about his great victory over the American People by passing the facist healthcare bill. It will last for months. Axlerod said they want to destroy those mean, nasty and disgusting Insurance Companies. They think they can screw us and we are helpless suckers, We need to show them we can screw Them. We need to shaft Barry with an organized Tax Revolt !!

My big brother was encircled in the forests around Belgium. My folks never heard from him for months and presumed the worst. When my folks got word he was ok one night very late, my Mom and Dad walked to our parish church to thank God. Yes, churches were open all night around Queens in NYC. My bro was a Medic in the 8th Army-I think. When he came home, he never talked about it & I was very upset about it. When I came back from Vietnam in 1966, and had two sailors killed in a Swit boat one night during a deployment, I finally understood him, It took me almost 20 years to figure out what happened during war. because war is lousy. A great book is "11 Days in December" by Stanley Weintraub.——joegwhelanCA
