Howard Dean: ‘Kill the Senate Bill’

In a blow to the bill grinding through the Senate, Howard Dean bluntly called for the bill to be killed in a pre-recorded interview set to air later this afternoon, denouncing it as “the collapse of health care reform in the United States Senate,” the reporter who conducted the interview tells me.
Dean said the removal of the Medicare buy-in made the bill not worth supporting, and urged Dem leaders to start over with the process of reconciliation in the interview, which is set to air at 5:50 PM today on Vermont Public Radio, political reporter Bob Kinzel confirms to me.
The gauntlet from Dean — whose voice on health care is well respsected among liberals — will energize those on the left who are mobilizing against the bill, and make it tougher for liberals to embrace the emerging proposal. In an excerpt Kinzel gave me, Dean says:
This is essentially the collapse of health care reform in the United States Senate. Honestly the best thing to do right now is kill the Senate bill, go back to the House, start the reconciliation process, where you only need 51 votes and it would be a much simpler bill.
Kinzel added that Dean essentially said that if Democratic leaders cave into Joe Lieberman right now they’ll be left with a bill that’s not worth supporting.
Dean had previously endorsed the Medicare buy-in compromise without a public option, saying that the key question should be whether the bill contains enough “real reform” to be worthy of progressives’ support. Dean has apparently concluded that the “real reform” has been removed at Lieberman’s behest — which won’t make it easier for liberals to swallow the emerging compromise.

The best way to kill this bill is to drag it out through next year. 2010 is an election year and no doubt many blue dogs will not vote for any form of health care legislation if it means losing their seats. Remember what happend in 1994 when dems attempted to pass Hilarycare?

The important thing to note in Dean's comments is that he wants to create a new, more acceptable (to the leftists) bill and pass it through reconciliation, which only requires 51 votes – not the 60 that this bill requires. I don't think that will happen. If the Dems try the "nuclear option" and pass this with only 51 votes during the height of an election year it will be absolute suicide in November. Plus, i don't even think it would make it to the senate. Remember the current house bill only passed by 3 votes (218-215), considering this will be a tough season for bluedogs, many of the same representatives who voted for the first bill will NOT vote for another even more liberal one.

I work in health care and that statement is categorically not true. No matter how many times it's used it remains an outright LIE. Patients are treated whether they have health care or not though most of the poor already have medicaid – if they don't the hospital applies for hosptial care for the specific patient if they're eligible – even if they're illegal they get care. In fact, most illegals already have medicaid. Private insurance offsets the free care or the low-paying Medicare/Medicaid patients.
Do you honestly believe that anyone would turn away a patient to die because they didn't have insurance?

"Oh &*()! I wrecked my car! Get me an insurance agent now!" Being able to buy insurance after you get an expensive health problem defeats the purpose of insurance. If that's the kind of coverage you want, get a health savings account and use self-pay. Insurers wont' stay in business if people wait until they're diagnosed with cancer before they buy insurance. And then you'll be stuck with the bill regardless.
Pre-existing condition clauses exist to keep the public from defrauding the insurance companies. Personally, I'd prefer a system where prices are published, visibly, beforehand. Let the patient decide where to go-to where has the best success rates for the cheapest price. Then, let the patient pay (financed if necessary) himself. Cut out the insurance company as a middleman. When people see exactly what effects their lifestyle choices have on their pocketbook, they may be more inclined to make healthy choices.

Open up all the Insurance Cos. in every state to sell throughout the U.S.
Just like Pool insurance for high risk drivers, Individual's with pre-existing conditions get rated and are given a company that must cover. This way high risk is Spread over all companies based on Volume of business done by each company, therefore NO ONE insurance company gets stuck with to many pre-existing individuals forcing the company to absorb to much loss.
Problem settled … There are so many ways to fix the Healthcare system, but not by Government Control. The only CRISIS is not Healthcare, but the AMERICAN People getting the CROOKS out of Washington. Then we can start solving the problems and make this country great again.
I was laid off and just before my severance paid Cobra was to run out, my husband got a job with insurance. He previously had a job with no insurance. We were using my employer's plan. He has a heart condition. The insurance with the new job had no "pre-existing condition" clause. We have coverage. There are insurance companies NOW who will insure. You just aren't looking in the right places. Plus, what Razor said….

I sure hope it's not a ploy. I think that's what it is, though – I think all this is designed to make Obamacare look "centrist" and "reasonable" so when the lefties come back aboard it looks like everybody in the country wants this bill but those obstructionist Republicans.

This is the problem we have. Each bill should item specific(i.e. military, oil, border security) and not co-mingling favors/other project expenses together.

Just so you know health insurance is available though private companies for decent prices right now. I'm over 30 and I just acquired catastrophic health insurance for $60 / month. It covers me for any serious issues involving broken bones, stitches and admission into the Hospital. Sure, I have to pay for my annual checkups, and if I get a cold I would have to pay for the office visit and medication, but if I'm saving hundreds per month that wouldn't be a problem. I love my country, but what the real problem is that the government has partially regulated the insurance industry already and it is not allowing the free market system and the American people to regulate costs. Just look at the cosmetic surgery and laser eye surgery industries. The reason why I wanted to include the Republicans involved is so that we do everything in our power to properly reform healthcare.
