Meet Stephen McIntyre: Amateur Runs Rings Around Climate ‘Professionals’
by PubliusCanada’s Macleans has a profile of the skeptic at the center of the ClimateGate e-mails (what, you expected an American newspaper to cover this story?):

The private emails and logs leaked last month from the Climatic Research Unit at the University of East Anglia can’t tell us whether industrial activity is really heating the earth’s atmosphere and endangering civilization. But they have settled the identity of the Great Satan of climate science. Torontonian Stephen McIntyre, a gentle, persistent amateur who had no credentials in applied science before stepping into the global warming debate in 2003, is mentioned more than 100 times.
In the emails, leading climate researchers dismiss him as a capitalist hireling or a hapless “bozo,” and argue about the relative merits of ignoring him versus counterattacking him, even as others acknowledge that his criticisms have merit and imitate his use of the Web as a venue for hyper-detailed scientific discussion. At one point in 2005, CRU director Phil Jones, now under suspension, ponders the possibility that McIntyre might use U.K. freedom-of-information laws to obtain raw weather-station data compiled by the CRU. He grumbles: “I think I’ll delete the file rather than send to anyone.” The overall impression is that of 100 elephants stampeding in confusion and panic around a mouse.
The political stakes are now so high when it comes to the “Climategate” scandal, and motives are being questioned so loudly on both sides, that few are noticing the remarkable story at the heart of it all: a 62-year-old mining executive and squash enthusiast has, for better or worse, found his way into the centre of a major scientific melée—almost by accident—and been able to make legitimate contributions.
McIntyre first became notorious in 2003 for his statistical critique, co-authored with economist Ross McKitrick, of the “hockey stick graph” that showed global temperatures rocketing upward in the 20th century. The hockey stick, featured in the 2001 report by the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, had a profound influence on policy worldwide, and played a starring role in presentations like Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth. The McIntyre-McKitrick critique called attention to uncertainties in its temperature reconstructions dating back before 1600, to certain problems with dendrochronology (the use of tree rings to estimate past temperatures), and to issues with the statistical calculations underlying the hockey stick. Some climatologists insist that the graph tells the same story when you correct for all this, but much of the critique is now accepted, and the hockey stick, whose weaknesses are better understood, has itself become a somewhat inconvenient distraction for climatologists and environmentalists.
Meanwhile, McIntyre, working alone, has gone on to score further critical points. In 2007, he caught a mistake in the reporting of U.S. surface temperatures by NASA’s Goddard Institute that was quickly acknowledged, with thanks, and corrected. (NASA’s gracious manner contrasts sharply with the attitudes displayed behind the scenes at the CRU.)
The truth is that McIntyre, 62, little resembles the caricature of a wild-eyed climate-change “denier.” He is scrupulous about focusing his criticism on statistical procedures and disclosure practices. He is polite to, and about, climate scientists. He refuses to make grand categorical statements of the “Global warming is just commie horse puckey” type, preferring to remain agnostic, and he discourages such talk on his website,Climate Audit.

" “Anything I say now would just be piling on,” he remarks, noting that he has no interest in helping the media stage a drama of personalities"
'course if the media hadn't tried to turn scientific investigation into a "drama of personalities" for the last decade or so on this very topic they wouldn't be in the shameful position they are in now!
A common man for uncommon times. When your whole life's work and all your financial sources are dependent on a certain outcome, the outcome is certain.
I say we need to start building statues of Stephen McIntyre, so our kids can grow up to understand how important one person can be in the grand scheme of things.
And the AGW movement was a grand scheme, if ever there was one. This man is a hero. He stepped up to the plate time and again, under relentless criticism (THE SCIENCE IS SETTLED, they said.) and scathing personal attacks. What a remarkable human being!
Thank you for your contributions, Stephen McIntyre.

This man is to science what I believe our founding father envisioned as the pinnacle of a citizen-statesman: he has a profession he quietly engages in, to enrich himself and of benefit his fellow man, and when he sees an opportunity to make an extraordinary contribution, be it through service in the legislature or as executive, he rises to the challenge.
It is when this moment of extraordinary service become a career, that the trouble starts; because soon, service becomes secondary to career.
Well put. Ditto.
"…the “Global warming is just commie horse puckey” type…"
That would be me, except that " horse pucky" is not in my vocabulary, but bull$#!* is.
McIntyre appears to be a real scientist despite his "amateur" status.
It is the MSM lack of reporting, lack of investigation and conscious decision to crawl in bed with the left that has helped make Andrew Breitbart, Beck, Rush, Hannitty, O’reilly, Malkin and so many others successful. While CNN scratches their head and MSNBC looks puzzled over their horrible ratings, others are willing to report on common sense issues the people have a right to know about. The fact that emails show so-called scientist intentionally suppressing any opposing views or playing with numbers to fit their wanted result instead of letting their findings give them the result (is that really science), is a huge story. Yet the Main stream media continues to down play it or simply not report on it at all. Much like they did with ACORN, The Kenneth Gladney beating by union thugs, President Obama’s safety czar, and so on.
The Main Stream Media is dead!!!!! They only have the man in the mirror to blame. Perhaps democrats will bail them out with OUR money.
All that "amateur" means, is that he does not make a living from it. Many in the MSM will use this term as a pejorative, implying he does not know what he's talking about, and have semantic cover, because its use, in this context, is TECHNICALLY correct and accurate.
Hmm. Fake but accurate. Where have I heard that before…
McIntyre has been a godsend. If the tyranny of AGW "solutions" can be avoided, he will deserve a considerable amount of the credit for his extraordinary work.
Very good point, and good connection to "fake but accurate," as well.
Carbon Footprints in the Sand(part 1)__One night I dreamed I was walking along the beach with Al Gore. Many scenes from my life flashed across the sky. For the first forty or so years of my life there were two sets of footprints in the sand. But later on there were one set of footprints.__This bothered me because I noticed that during the low periods of my life, when I was older and I was suffering from anguish, sorrow or defeat, and I was really worried about losing my Medicare and Social Security benefits, __and not being able to find a job, I could see only one set of footprints.__
carbon footprints in the sand (part 2)
So I said to Al Gore, "You promised me Al, that if I worshipped the environment, and pretended to believe in Global Warming you would hang out with me always. But I have noticed that as I got older, during the most trying periods of my life, there have only been one set of footprints in the sand. Why, when I needed you most, why have you not been there for me, Al?"__Al Gore replied, "The times when you have seen only one set of footprints in the sand, is when I killed you. You see, your carbon footprint had become too large for the Earth to possibly support you and me and my forty-seven room mansion, and my private jets, and my fleet of cars, and my… well you get the picture. Don’t You?"____ Anonymous__
McIntyre's tenacity and devotion to the truth are an inspiration. Most impressive: his determination to keep the climate change debate substantive and constructive, even when subjected to relentless personal and professional insult from the scientific establishment.
He should be very careful because nobody expects the Spinach Inquisition.
Well, he didn't exactly prove empirically that the earth was round but Stephen McIntyre is a name that deserves to be remembered for, if nothing more, being honest.
Every once in a while a real hero emerges. Often maligned, often targeted, they persist, seeking the truth, working for little return, enduring the ridicule. These are the true heros that should be taught about in every classroom in America, for on the likes of Stephen McIntyre rests America's greatness, not in the mmmBarack Obama, mmm mmm.
Don't leave out the "Safe School Czar!" Is there anyone less qualified for that position?
America will see another perspective on this CO2 is poison hoax. Next Wednesday nite @10:PM EST on tru-TV.
I expect this will blow the lid off this NWO, Bilderberg financed plot to enslave the people of the World.

cool……looking for ward to seeing this……thx
u is 1 twisted dude… LOL!
If the Church of Global Warming was listening they might notice God is sending them a message with SNOW FALLING IN AUSTRALIA ( it's sumer there now) and the LARGEST SNOWFALL IN CANADA this weekend!
Thank you, Stephen McIntyre.
Thank you also for being a "capitalist hireling".
Thank God you are such a man.
You are not a member of America's "East coast legitimate mafia"
so profoundly interested in our immediate entry of a one-world, socialist, state government led by experts like themselves. (see Edith Kermit Roosevelt Gr.Dau.of Teddy/quotes)
you always know those who speak thruth the libs and lame stream media attack dogs are unleashed love too see al gore behind bars
So sayeth Al Gore.
Minus 59 degrees Celcius (including wind chill) at the Edmonton International Airport (Canada) this morning.
I repeat – MINUS 59 DEGREES
When the hell is this Global Warming going to get here????!!!!
Global Warming is just commie horse puckey.
He was heroic on imposing honesty on dishonest ersatz scientists. His service's value has not yet been tallied.
It's telling that the rhetoric being used by the Global Warming/Cimate Change crowd is religious in nature, not scientific. Scientific rigor – of being able to independently confirm and test the results presented is out the window and replaced by stonewalling with scientists being called "deniers" or "skeptics." Gore tears his robes, "UNBELIEVERS! BLASPHEMY!"
"Global Warming/Climate Change is a political movement, not a science, it's anti-science.
I knew when I heard AlgGore declare "The science has been settled." that something was amiss. They've been rewriting Newtonian physics for centuries, and no one declared it a closed shop. AlGore's declaration and the ad hominid attacks ("anyone who denies AGW is a moron.") were the first sign that something was amiss. This wasn't science. Science welcomes the challenge. Science values its data (CRU destroys theirs). Science tests its hypotheses against challenges in a search for truth. It doesn't employ a 'trick' in the cover to UN document that grossly misstates the data in order to persuade government leaders, who are scientifically defenseless, to accept your manufactured results. This was a brutish, dishonest conspiracy. The cost of this has been enormous, and it hasn't been totaled out yet. I wonder what circle of the Inferno these guys will be assigned to….
I would love to see a televised debate. Three per side. Al Gore and Michael Mann on one, Lord Monckton and Stephen McIntyre on the other. You pick the third.
If the media was doing its job, they would try to see which side of the argument is correct. Instead they parrot the pro-global warming, pro-statist side of things. They ignore opposing views.

Stephen McIntyre is a gentleman. Not many left in this world.
The climate fraudsters led by algore have been awaiting the Copenhagen smoke and mirrors summit for a long time. Someone pulled the plug on them – some say it was Jim Hansen.
The Obamation might still hand them our sovereignty on a platter by signing an "agreement" – not a "treaty"…
excellent idea. . .
Brilliant, you sicko!
Except an "agreement" has no more binding force than an executive order- it's revocable.
BBC here we come!
Attacking the messanger will never win an arguement.
Even a person with a zero IQ can tell you that the building is on fire. If you dismiss him or her because the messanger has a zero IQ or is a different race or has done pranks before, and you do not examine the message for truthfullness, you could die in the fire.
Because of this attitude, examine the message reguardless of the messanger, it seems the best solution to global warming, if it is occuring and is man-made, would be to reduce the world's population. Save the planet by having less man on the planet and therefore less of man's activities that cause global warming. So, in order to save the planet, I would expect a pro-war, anti-healthcare, higher taxes on larger families, less safe work envirnment type rally. You know, kill a few million and save the planet.
Where was I wrong?
Mr. McIntyre, thank you for your honesty, tenacity and professionalism, qualities that are sorely lacking these days. You have restored my faith in the power of the individual.
Have you read the " harry read me" file
This is the smoking gun of the science
The scientists and lawyers can explain the emails
but the harry read me file is data manipulation
My question is "Who is questioning 'Harry"

McIntyre is looking for facts. The Warm mongers are dogma based.
For thousands of years, religious efforts have claimed influence by man over weather. Ran dances claimed man had influence over weather.
UK Law; 2006 Fraud Act. Three key points:-
False representation.
Failing to disclose information
Abuse of position
Anyone know why none of the "Authorities" have called the Police in?
NAO, The Audit Commission, University funding committee, Professional Bodies…are all that Un-Professional? (read dishonest)
Only potential criminal investigation is that being whipped up to find "Who spilled the beans" Criminal!!!
"Peer review" is not a dispositive evidence of "truth". A major factor that distinguishees a "state of society" from a "state of nature" is that it provides a forum with an impartial judge to decide disputes and controversies, so that NO MAN MAY SIT IN JUDGEMENT OF HIS OWN CAUSES.
These "Peer Review" journals are made up only of those who belong to the same "good old boys club" who are all in aqgreement of a common "cause". They are only one dissenting party to an adversarial proceeding who are attempting to SIT IN JUDGEMENT OF THIER OWN CAUSE. This is contrary to the fundamentals of jurisprudence everywhere, and should be invalidated by any serious scientific community.

Who says the earth is round?
Thank The Good Lord for those who seek out and report the truth even when it is "Inconvenient". Not all of have the time or the ability to pour over the statistics and research data and catch the inconsistencies. Thank You Stephen McIntyre for checking the numbers twice and letting us know that things don't jib.
Not only are we nice here, we're honest too… save for David "stash the motor home and pull up at the Church of Climatology rally in your eco-car" Suzuki who is in a race with Jabba the Gore to cash in on the "green" green.
He's a statistician too which they try to avoid mentioning when questioning how he was able to see the "so called" errors in their STATISTICAL DATA and why he would be questioning their ANALYTICAL MODEL with only the partial data sets he was able to obtain in spite of their "community" working so hard against his acquiring such. The Church of Climatology seems to trip over their own position that climate math is something outside of the realm of our reality and understanding it is a matter of what shapes one sees in a cloud rather than any actual understanding of math.
Thanks, Alan F —
I'm so dumb I didn't know who David Suzuki is, LOL. I looked him up after seeing your comment. He's about a piece of work, too. Notice how he uses the word "sacred" in one of his book titles?
Thanks again…
I was stuck at the side of the road for that snowfall in Canada. 12 hours before we coould move.
…all those idling vehicles to stay warm and survive. Now I'm sitting on northern Manitoba where the windchill is -37.
It is high time that the AGW climate fraudsters were investigated and prosecuted. This crime makes Bernie Madoff look like a piker. The adherents to the religion of High Priest & Chief Druid Algore should be in prison. Perhaps when the gentle terrorists are moved to Illinois, these AGW gangsters can be given three hots and a cot in Gitmo.
