Monday Open Thread: Churchill Edition
by PubliusToday, in 1874, Winston Churchill was born. (There is no way we can improve on that sentence.)

Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) and Jonathan Swift were also born on this day. This day is truly blessed. Enjoy.

Here is an excellent article, by Mark Steyn, on Ed Begley's "pier review" meltdown last week on Fox.

"It has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except all the others that have been tried."
Sir Winston Churchill
"This could be our finest hour"
A reminder of a time when being larger than life meant something other than dropping your trousers on reality TV and then crying about it later. For those who care to know, read Manchester's two book "The Last Lion" series. It does not even touch on WWII and paints a picture of a person who never voted present. Or, if you like a good fist hand history of WWII, get Churchill's own "The Second World War."
Both are unforgettable.
People forget that, though he was born British, he was also an American son. Apparently it was not a bad pedigree, and the world can be thankful for that.

A conservative, who like the canary in the mine, led the clarion call, that recognized the evil that was Adolph Hitler, well in advance of the horror that engulfed the world. The right man, at the right time, in the right place. Do we have people, with this kind of mettle in the modern west?
Another good Churchill book is "The Boer War". It is a compilation of 2 books that he wrote while serving as a war correspondent for the "Morning Post". Those 2 books were published in 1900 when Churchill was just 25 years old. He is an incredible wordsmith.
A great point, Stan, and it makes one muse "what if" Churchill had not been "there" at the right time. And look what we have in this country. An egotist who despises American freedoms and traditions married to a woman who treats taxpayer money as her welfare payments for her staff support. Reminds me of Juan and "Evita" Perone during Argentina's hey days of the 30's and 40's where they pillaged and destroyed the middle class economies. Pure revulsion. Elections HAVE consequences ! (btw.. Argentina is STILL suffering from the Perone's fiscal debacle even today).
We must be courageous. This man reminds me that is our only path to victory. How unlike a more recent Churchill he is.
huckfunn
Mark sure has a way with words.
Lady Nancy Astor: If I were your wife I would put poison in your coffee!
Churchill: And if I were your husband I would drink it!
The wife and I were in England earlier this year and some of my most favorite parts of the trip were at various Churchill-related sites and exhibits. It was awesome to walk in the footsteps of such a man. One of my favorite quotes of his was posted on the wall of an exhibit at the Imperial War Museum: Victory at all costs, victory in spite of terror, victory however long and hard the road may be; for without victory, there is no survival!”
One wonders what Mr. Churchill would think of what England and the whole world has become.
My favorite Churchill quote: "Any man who is under 30, and is not a liberal, has not heart; and any man who is over 30, and is not a conservative, has no brains."
I use that quote over and over again to young people when I try to describe the difference between liberals and conservatives. I usually find that once they have a real job, and have to pay real taxes, they shift right.
It was the British under Churchill, and their inept general Montgomery, that caused many American troops to be killed in WW2. FDR was directly responsible for the tragedies of killing and destruction of our young men by letting our armies deteriorate to practically nothing leading up to Pearl Harbor, then waiting too long to engage the enemy, and being much too slow with Churchill in all engagements against all enemies during the war. Churchill and FDR are the worst leaders up to Obamanable, and if one were to analyze the before, during and after of WW2, with a critical eye, one would be disgusted as I. Hundreds of thousands of American lives lost and destroyed by the Leftist, Liberal leaders – now we have Obamanable and Afghanistan.
Churchill could've used it!
Now, you can to!

A rally cry from Winnie:
"Hitler knows that he will have to break us in this island or lose the war. If we can stand up to him, all Europe may be free and life of the world may move forward into broad, sunlit uplands. But if we fall, then the whole world, including the United States, including all that we have known and cared for, will sink into the abyss of a new Dark Age made more sinister, and perhaps more protracted, by the lights of perverted science.
Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves that, if the British Empire and its Commonwealth lasts for a thousand years, men will still say, “This was their finest hour!”
One more–
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves."
Whut??
Talk about not knowing History. The Chamberlain's in the British Government at the time PREVENTED the earlier stopping of Hitler – NOT Churchill. Churchill warned England, Europe and the rest of the world about Hitler LONG before he because PM.
I heard another one went something like:
Woman: "Mr. Churchill, you're DRUNK!"
Winston: "Yes Madam, but in the morning I will be sober. You will still be ugly."
Classic
" . . . an iron curtain has descended across the Continent . . . "

Here is my all time favorite Churchill quote:
"War is a game that is played with a smile. If you can't smile, grin. If you can't grin, keep out of the way till you can."
~ Winston Churchill ~
It brings a whole new meaning to the phrase "Grin and bear it"……….
………and here is my seond favorite Churchill quote:
"Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery."
~ Winston Churchill ~
Why aren't there people like that around anymore? With intestinal fortitude……….
If our military gets Osama, will Obamanable be the hero? Churchill didn’t rise up to address the Hitler and Mussolini problem; he waited for us to save his ass. Churchill, with the permission of FDR, withheld fuel, supplies and men from Patton and our advancing troops so that Montgomery could save face. Churchill, like FDR, withheld the truth by censoring the press. Mistakes were made before with the Chamberlain regime, but Churchill exacerbated the problem of weakness and delay until the fight was in his yard – just like FDR waited for Pearl Harbor. MacArthur should have been president, and Churchill and Montgomery should be disgraced. This is the real history!
Pirates strike again.

Why not have a few Q-ships in the area?
The Pirates attack the 'cargo' ship.
The 'cargo' ship unveils a hidden 5 inch gun.
BOOM!
Pirates get 72 virgins or whatever.
Everybody wins.
You made me have to go and look it up.
Thanks.

I was hoping some one in the media besides Rush would pick up on that.
I thin he probably would have moved to America.
How perfect that both, a curmudgeon and satirist, par excellance, were born on this day. The things they could write about if they were alive today….
Thanks for the link–I love that speech. Here's more of the "Finest Hour" speech. Very interesting. Churchill speaks from the grave–
"During the first four years of the last war the Allies experienced nothing but disaster and disappointment. That was our constant fear: one blow after another, terrible losses, frightful dangers. Everything miscarried. And yet at the end of those four years the morale of the Allies was higher than that of the Germans, who had moved from one aggressive triumph to another, and who stood everywhere triumphant invaders of the lands into which they had broken. During that war we repeatedly asked ourselves the question: 'How are we going to win?' And no one was able ever to answer it with much precision, until at the end, quite suddenly, quite unexpectedly, our terrible foe collapsed before us, and we were so glutted with victory that in our folly we threw it away.
We do not yet know what will happen in France or whether the French resistance will be prolonged, both in France and in the French Empire overseas. The French Government will be throwing away great opportunities and casting adrift their future if they do not continue the war in accordance with their treaty obligations, from which we have not felt able to release them. The House will have read the historic declaration in which, at the desire of many Frenchmen–and of our own hearts–we have proclaimed our willingness at the darkest hour in French history to conclude a union of common citizenship in this struggle. However matters may go in France or with the French Government, or other French Governments, we in this Island and in the British Empire will never lose our sense of comradeship with the French people. If we are now called upon to endure what they have been suffering, we shall emulate their courage, and if final victory rewards our toils they shall share the gains, aye, and freedom shall be restored to all. We abate nothing of our just demands; not one jot or tittle do we recede. Czechs, Poles, Norwegians, Dutch, Belgians have joined their causes to our own. All these shall be restored.
What General Weygand called the Battle of France is over. I expect that the Battle of Britain is about to begin. Upon this battle depends the survival of Christian civilization. Upon it depends our own British life, and the long continuity of our institutions and our Empire. The whole fury and might of the enemy must very soon be turned on us.
Hitler knows that he will have to break us in this Island or lose the war. If we can stand up to him, all Europe may be free and the life of the world may move forward into broad, sunlit uplands. But if we fail, then the whole world, including the United States, including all that we have known and cared for, will sink into the abyss of a new Dark Age made more sinister, and perhaps more protracted, by the lights of perverted science.
Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves that if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say, 'This was their finest hour.' (RealAudio :22)
Winston Churchill – June 18, 1940"
Bessie Braddock: “Sir, you are drunk.”
Churchill: “ And you Madam are ugly. But in the morning, I shall be sober.”
Greatest Quote Ever!
Sadly, we're heading in a direction where we're not much better.
And he'd be leading the charge against it.
The socialists are going to have a much harder time converting Americans than they had with the Brits. The UK has a long history of strict class stratification.
We ain't got that here.
Today, in 1874, Winston Churchill was born. (There is no way we can improve on that sentence.)
Fantastic.
Not sure it was Churchill, but I think it was. He was asked about what he thought of someone in Parliament. His reply was "He is a modest man… and he has much to be modest about".

Well, at least not with what we have now.
My favorite. I have thought about this many times lately…….
We shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches.
We shall fight on the landing grounds.
We shall fight in the fields and in the streets.
We shall fight in the hills;
We shall never surrender.

Which is why Obama shipped the bust of Churchill back to England as soon as he laid eyes on it in the WH.
What a dumb ass! Most of the deaths in World War II were caused by Adolf Hitler, either directly or indirectly!
Great men like Churchill and F.D.R.stood up to the enslavement of the free peoples in Europe by an evil despot. Churchill had nothing to do with the appeasement which led to Germany"s rapid build up. In fact Hitler had already taken Poland, Denmark, and Norway and was beginning his march on the Netherlands, Holland, Belgium and Luxembourg on the way to France before Churchill became Prime Minister in May of 1940.
Hitler offered 'peace' to England and all he wanted from London was "a free hand in Europe". Many wanted to sell free Europe down the river, but Sir Winston reiterated Britain's "inflexible resolve to continue the war"
Churchill lit a fire in Brits which, as much as any single man, led to the push back, and ultimate destruction of Nazi aggression.
One problem…it's not a Churchill quote.
Try French historian and politician Francois Guizot (1787-1874) instead: "Not to be a republican (i.e. socialist) at twenty is proof of want of heart; to be one at thirty is proof of want of head."
Excellent point. You are right, and for some reason, I forgot he did that, and today, see the signifigance in it.
Hey everyone!
My name is Gary, I just wanted to introduce myself since I am new to this site…
I am a rookie to the internet but I am learning alot real fast!
I’m a Hair Stylist and devoted father.
The things I enjoy most in life are family, friends and football.
On week days you’ll usually find me being lazy. On the weekends I like to party and watch football.
My idea of the perfect day would start with a morning jog. And then I’d go to the drag races. Later I’d eat a great dinner from Dinosaur Bar-B-Que. And I’d top it all off by snuggling with my GF.
I also love hip hop videos.
Anyways it’s great to be a part of your site!
Thnks
In 2010, the government has also allocated billions of dollars in government grants and various funding programs.
