ACORN Document Dump: Why Did ACORN Spend $9,000 at Fertility Clinic?
by PubliusBig Government’s first post about the San Diego Document Dump showed a bank authorization to automatically pay monthly membership dues. That particular individual committed to paying ACORN $10 a month. Thousands of California residents have made similar commitments, adding up to substantial monthly revenue for ACORN. How an organization chooses to spend its members money says a lot about that organization.
Below is a monthly credit card statement for ACORN employee David Lagstein’s corporate credit card:

We’re not entirely certain what the “Fertility Specialist Medical Group” or the “San Diego Reproductive Surgery Center” does, but we know that, in June, ACORN paid them more than $9,000. We also know that ACORN dumped the credit card statement detailing the charge into a public dumpster just days before the Attorney’s General office was scheduled to visit.
No doubt, Mr. Lagstein has a good reason for this purchase. Or, at least, an explanation for how payments to a fertility clinic further the hopes and dreams of the poor and low-income families who have turned to ACORN for help. We’ll be waiting along with the rest of you for the answer.

I was wondering the exact same thing ACORN_Fraud. A quick google search shows us this:
"SVM's experienced sales team, quick toll-free ordering process, efficient online ordering system and fast and friendly superior customer service has made SVM the experts in business-to-business and consumer sales of prepaid gift cards since 1997."
So, it seems they offer prepaid gift cards. I'd be interested in seeing what these gift cards were used for; while it could be something entirely benign (for instance, maybe ACORN purchases these cards and has their employees pay for gas with them), it could also be something much worse. It would not surprise me if these gift cards (which would be FAR more difficult to trace than checks) were used in the oft-reported but never investigated "bonus" schemes they ran during 'Get out the vote' drives. It also wouldn't surprise me if the cards were used as a manner of bribing people to vote for particular candidates.

SVM offers prepaid gas and retail gift cards. High end retailers such as Saks Fifth Ave and Williams Sonoma participate. Home Depot, Amazon and others also offer gift cards through this service. Many gas stations offer cards as well.
Look on the bright side…Mr. Lagstein can (allegedly, of course) fill his car, drive his significant other to the fertility clinic and have reading material while he sits in the waiting room. ACORN has helped another citizen live a better life!

I was definitely wondering the same thing. I would imagine non-profits and companies that have to account for all expenditures wouldn't be allowed to purchase those without declaring exactly what they were spent on. Otherwise the CC just becomes a pocket money fund.

What's interesting are the amounts of the SVM cards, $539.45 repeatedly and $783.20, could be under the table payroll. I think the AG Brown could trace these easily, but he probably won't. The way I see it, other than a few phone bills and a couple of lunches, this Acorn (company) card was used for personal use. This guy should do time IMO.

SVM Prepaid cards basically are all types of prepaid cards. Basically non-traceable. They include American Express gift card and Visa Gift Cards. What a wonderful way to distribute bribes and other underground activities. So you pull up $2300 worth in a month. My coroprate accounting group would have me on the carpet asking questions. I guess that means this activity is SOP and acknowledged to the highest levels of the ACORN organization.

The Prepaid cards are a handly way to pay people "off the books", so no payroll taxes apply and no one can trace them.
…no far from it… its just if you GOOGLE "svm il" you will see that the majority of their business is gas cards. Impossible to prove and has a plausible story == not worth digging deeper. These would likely be consistent with the travel listed on the expense report.

(05/15) The two locations are six hundred miles apart. There's one direct flight a day to Humboldt, and it comes from LAX. You can get there through a transfer in San Francisco, but why go to Riverside (Ontario) to catch a flight to SF when there's direct San Diego/ SF flights?

Unless you have an expense report with those questionable expenses submitted for reimbursement from ACORN, this is not a story. People make personal charges on company credit cards all the time, often to get bonus miles or hotel points or whatever. If your name is on a company CC, YOU are responsible for the charges, not the company. Anyone who has ever had a company CC knows that. Again, unless you have his expense report with these weird expenses submitted and approved by the accounting department, this is not a scandal.

It is not uncommon for high-level professionals and executives to be permitted to use "corporate" credit cards for personal purposes as long as they pay the personal portion of the bills. Different companies have different policies.
Moreover, there is no evidence here that the card was issued through ACORN or that the cardholder was even employed by ACORN. He could have a business on the side, could have kept an old corporate card from his own business for personal use (dishonest, but would not really implicate ACORN), etc., etc. etc.
He also has a potential case for invasion of privacy against the website that is hosting the publication of the credit card statement statement.
There's a good chance something improper is implicated here, but one would have to be delusional to perceive what is posted here as actually establishing that.

Your argument fails to recognize that if a credit card user is charging $9k against the company for frequent flier miles but is reimbursing the company, that honest person would preserve the paper trail for tax and other purposes. Only a crook would throw out these credit card statements to try to avoid their discovery by investigating authorities with search warrants. We're glad you haven't spent your life in "low- and middle-income jobs." But if you had, you might be able to advance a more persuasive argument.
