Without ACORN, we are told, many underprivileged families would lose an important voice for their needs.

Below is one family’s application for food stamp benefits that ACORN threw out with its trash, in advance of a visit from officers of the Attorney’s General office.

The food stamp application has a “wet” signature, meaning it is the original application. It isn’t a copy. Did ACORN forward this application to the proper federal or state agencies. Is this family, with multiple children, still waiting to hear whether they qualify for food stamp benefits? Are they watching the approaching Thanksgiving holiday wondering whether they will have food to eat?
ACORN spokesman, Amy Schur said, in response to news reports about the document dump that, “it appears that included in the piles of garbage being thrown out may have been some documents containing private information.”
Yes, Ms. Schur, your organization’s reckless handling of “private information” is troublesome. The precise ratio of “garbage” to “private information” is kind of missing the point about the trust that’s been placed with ACORN. This isn’t the only application for food stamp assistance we’ve recovered. This is just one example. There are many, many applications for food stamps discarded by ACORN.

That bothers me. I am not one for hand outs, or food stamps, but sometimes folks need help. For them to do this is unconscionable. It would be interesting to track down and investigate exactly what ACORN worker handled this case, and then see where they had Thanksgiving dinner…………..
There is something else troublesome with it, if I remember the videos when Hanna and James visited an ACORN center they were asked to join (pay $150). Did this family pay the fee to ACORN in the hope of assistance?
I wonder if the Applicants HAD to Join ACORN…… In the videos they were all asked to Join Acorn…. Once Acorn gets the membership dies, it really doesn't care what happens to you……
Hmmm… Perhaps the Gloria family should consider living somewhere where rent is less than $1200 a month.
And is anyone else disgusted that the ethnicity questions are not just given more importance than the REASONS for needing help, but are REQUIRED?
New community organizations need to rise up and make a difference, show some respect to what its goals are and not commit fraud and do what it is actually funded for. It would be nice for these diregarded people to be informed and educated on the betrayal by ACORN. We all can make a difference, bit by bit if we pursue it together.

Good point, same thought crossed my mind. I don't mind offering a "hand up" to someone on hard times vs a "hand out". I don't agree with the "generational welfare" as is currently run and funded in this country today.

True that $1200 a month is a lot for (low-income) rent in most parts of the country. However, the Acorn office in question is in (high housing cost) San Diego county.

As Gloria admitted having $2150, "how much money do you have?", why is she even being considered for food stamps? It seems to me that you use that cash for food first in fairness to taxpayers before you get food stamps. Is Gloria even here legally?
Anyone else notice the box for "Migrant/Seasonal Farm Worker"? It tells me that the concept of guest worker expected to return home seasonally doesn't exist. What I'd like to see is just who ACORN doled out taxpayer funds to and why?

I suspect the application was trashed because of innacurate information. Not seeing the last name, but reading the rest of the application, it appears it was filled out wrong. Race…white. Interpreture…yes…Inglish. Appears the applicant was other than "white".
Having said that, ACORN is a despicable organization, and it pains me that anyone would have to pay to join, much less ask them for a hand up, if a hand up is, indeed, the case.
With all the "government" money ACORN has received, you can bet your almighty dollar they have a paper shredder or two in all of their offices. To just toss in the trash, for anyone to find, private information, is such a huge breach of trust.
I guess this doesn't really surprize me that much though. It is done every day within our government offices and so called non-profit organization. Let it serve as a warning as to what type of private information you are willing to lay on the line.
I'I've worked in a social services environment and it's entirely possible that these folks did not qualify for help after the initial interview. These initial interview documents usually ask for all the personal info up front so that the social worker can move forward quickly in securing the desired help.
The last thing Breitbart needs a bunch of knee-jerks and overblown concerns about things that may never be proven to be egregious.
Saying that, it is still quite unsettling that any such documents would not be shredded after lolling about for years with no action. Further to my personal witnessing of some social services employees, it would not surprise me one bit that someone could have a personal and biased reason for being unable to help any individual, or to go out of one's way and beyond one's boundaries to help a favored individual.
All charity should be home-grown or within one's personally accountable church/club/local outreach. Government money disappears into the mist, even in the most respected organizations.

Harry my comment wasn't directed at this family in particular, but at the whole bloody socialistic concept of welfare and the like. I am pro-workfare (which is kinda tough now-a-days) and having people experience personal responsibility. I pray these kids do not go hungry!

I was the recipient of social services for a few years in the early 90s. My caseworker insisted that I mail the originals of my son's identifying documents, which were promptly "lost." Years later, I discover my first-grader is having "his" Honda repossesed. I wonder how they got the information.
She did check "white" on race. There are white Spanish speaking immigrants. However, the questionairre is interesting in that the question for "Latino" was separate from "race." Is this common? I don't usually have to fill out forms asking me my race, etc.

There are two questions on the form, first for ethnicity (whether or not you are hispanic) and the second is for race, but hispanic or latino is not an option under race. She would have had no choice but to chose white.

I understand where the remark make have pricked your tired heart like a thorn, but I assure you, I share your frustrations– and Michael Steele has felt mine much more sharply! But if we're gonna investigate the sheer buggery of the taxpayer, we must be careful to always (and still!) assume innocence first for individuals. I certainly want that grace afforded me and have no problem extending it to others.
Besides, I've seen nothing yet to greatly alarm me except the mishandling of file disposal. Even the video from a few days ago, of the old woman preening about ACORN's getting Obama elected came across as merely exaggerated bloviating. It doesn't mean it might not be true, it just means that I regard it with a wary eye toward it providing me with any real ammo for a fight.
I'm still hoping, as I stated earlier, that this slag-heap of documents will yield truly useful information and AB is merely trickling out little nothings to lull the players into a false comfort and loud denial that will later embarrass ACORN further.

I'm kinda torn on this one. I mean, if ACORN threw away ALL the food stamp applications wouldn't California be much better off? Maybe they could start throwing out ALL the voter registrations, too, instead of just the Republican registrations.

I saw a number of issues discussed in comments here. One regards race. First off who cares the race peddlers are the left it would be in all our best intrests to remove that question from all forms. Latinos like italians or germans consider themselves and government have considered them white. The special status ? asking if you are latino was added under preasure from groups like La Raza to build there political muscle. Having worked the 1990 Census that was a major focus at that time to build those numbers If I rember it was asked three ways are a hispanic check box in race, a specific question on short and long form are you or any of your imediate family hispanic, another asking if your parents or there parents were hispanic. Science says that genetically we are all 99.99 percent the same. Race is based on subjective comparisons and individual races have been added and subtracted at the whim of politicians and popular science. Race divides us and the left uses it as both a pry bar and a hammer dont feed the beast. One America, One American People.

People need help and they need places to go Why in the hell should any group be able to pitch for membership when someone in need shows up. Someone truley in need will sign anything including there right to property. A membership form $10 dollars a month sounds like a small price for $300 worth of food a month. I guessing their presentation isn't much different from a "free" vacation at a tiem share project, locked in a room wondering how much it will cost you to get out of there.

You will find few people as conservative as I, but I see nothing wrong at all with the application and do not believe that one should have to be absolutely penniless in order to get some aid.. They MAY be legal immigrants – we don't know (and that should certainly be a question for ANY assistance!). If they are legal, the fact that they have $2100 means squat when you have 5 kids, a $1200 mortgage, utilities, winter approaching and you are trying to take measures to prevent your family from going hungry in the next month. Where ACORN is concerned, it is REALLY easy to assume the worst (fraud, etc…), but let's be careful that we don't summarily dismiss someone who, up until now, may have been a highly productive member of society. Jumping to conclusions should be left up to the pro's – the libtards.

On a similar note: I was checking out of the grocery the other day behind a 'needy' family. They had two full carts of groceries…….they paid with food stamps….all but about $20 bucks worth of booze…..I was also behind them when they got in their LEXUS and drove away. WTF is going on here!!
The date on the application is 06/23/09. This application was probably thrown away because there was too much cash listed and there were four daughters. The ACORN worker probably changed this original so that it would speed through the approval process. These illegals are probably enjoying food stamps, rent assistance, utility assistance, send their children to public school and never pay a dime in federal taxes.

Maybe the food stamp application was as phoney as some of the voter registration forms. Are we sure these (gloria) people really exist? Are they already getting food stamps under another name but would like a little more of the money that other people have worked hard for?
Most public education funding comes through property taxes, which are included in rent. So even illegal aliens contribute to puplic education when they pay rent.

My roommate recently applied and was approved for food stamps since being out of work for 6+ months. He said they even deemed neccesary to ask him what my income was, how much $$ I had saved, and whether Me/Him Owned the residence we stay in. I'm not taking care of him!!! He's applying for them! My information is none of their damn buisness. Luckily he did not supply my info by saying ???? That's the type of crap these dept. want or even need. Why?

I love large families. I came from a family of 5. My best friend came from a family of 8. The glaring difference between our families is that my parents worked for what they had. And we didn't have much. Not only that, both my parents immigrated to this country legally. Meaning they applied for a visa and waited in line. Don't get me wrong, If I lived in a corrupt country where I could not provide for my family I would be remiss in my duties if I did not come to a place where I could find work. The trouble is that there is no more work to be had. The well has run dry and to ad insult to injury our government will not shut off the tap. Judging by what I can see on the application it was illegal aliens. They can go get food from their home country.
The person who filled the form out may want to take note of how "English" is spelled, it's on page one under the language section.
Look at question 2, the applicant asks to have an interpreter present while claiming to speak english (inglish on the form). Doesn't California have any english speaking people at the food stamp office? At first this was funny-until I recalled that the healthcare bills in congress provide community origanizations taxpayer money to provide interpreters to low income patients. TAXPAYER MONEY TO ACORN TO PROVIDE INTERPRETERS TO ENGLISH SPEAKING PEOPLE !!! JUST ANOTHER ACORN TAXPAYER RIPOFF. Does the food stamp program provide money to acorn to supply interpreters???

Yes, Latino or Hispanic is often a separate category from "race" since Hispanics are usually Caucasian. Sometimes there will be categories for "White – Hispanic" or "White – non-Hispanic". There are lots of non-Caucasian Hispanics in the Caribbean; I don't know what category they fit into.
When I was a teacher helping kids fill out state and federal forms (for testing, etc.) there were always a few kids asking me what race they were. They had no idea, and sometimes I couldn't figure it out, either. If your grandparents are from four different racial groups (not uncommon here in California) then what race are you? And why does it matter?

I'm an eligibility worker for the Food Stamp program, in addition to other state-delivered programs, although not in California. There are a number of things that jumped out at me from this application – I see apps like this every day.
First off – it's a "wet" signature, but the application was obviously prepared by someone at the ACORN office, and once printed, signed by the applicants – a married Hispanic couple, possibly immigrants, with five kids. If the adults are noncitizens, chances are good that some or all of the kids are US born…the parents would receive Food Stamps on their behalf, so the household's needs would be calculated for five and not seven.
Second – rent/mortgage of $1200 a month isn't unreasonable. I pay quite a bit more than that, and I have a family of six, if you don't count the cats. I see applications with rent or mortgage amounts higher still than mine every day, from people who had the misfortune to buy during the housing bubble and now can't afford it because they've lost their job. $1200 a month here gets you a 4 bedroom house, with a small yard.

Third – Although it depends on what the father in the household's income is, I see him listed as "yes" he has income, but there's no amount listed. Typically, this is somebody that's just lost his job, hasn't yet applied for unemployment, doesn't know what community support is out there, and is looking for what to do next. I have people that come past my desk daily in precisely this predicament – I would speculate that he was told to apply for unemployment.
The biggest question is one that the poster of these documents posed – why were these not forwarded to the agency that makes eligibility determinations? They were signed, obviously. Releasing the information on these documents, either inadvertently or purposefully, is something that I would rightly be censured for, or outright lose my job for, and deservedly so. Confidentiality of information is one of those things that is drummed into us at every single training, at new employee orientation, at staff meetings….there is absolutely nothing that the agency I work for takes more seriously…not even fraud, and that's saying something.
Trigger, under the rules for Food Stamps enacted around ten years ago, most of the time vehicle values are considered a "resource" and are excluded from the calculation. There are many good reasons for this, not the least of which is the potential error factor involved in asking a government bureaucrat like myself to figure out from Kelley Blue Book how much the eight rusting cars sitting in somebody's front yard are worth.
No, the article said it was the "wet" copy. Which means it was the original. Which means the state was never in receipt of that application. Unless she went back and applied with the state directly or through another agency, this woman is not on food stamps.
Wait a minute, last time I checked it was ILLEGAL for anyone to require you to answer race or ethnicity questions. They can ask, but you can refuse to answer. I always do. In fact I was just asked this question monday, and I patently refused to answer it. The man on the phone told me "and it's your legal right to do so", and he went on to the next question.

Alright Jan and Cowboy Logic its time for some education for my fellow conservative/libertarians. I am a solid one and PC is not in my language but facts are. First off, Hispanics are mostly white or white just not lets say of Northern European stock like Anglos or Germans but Spanish and a good chunk of that southern Spaniards which tend to be golden skinned or even light brown but with European characteristics. It's not unlike Sicilians. I'll give examples: Desi Arnez of I love Lucy, Ken Salazar the current Sec of Interior, Cameron Diaz, Christina Aguilera among many others. George Lopez is not. He's an American of Latino descent.
How many of the Hispanic/Latino population is that here in the US? The last survey put it at 62.35% in 2008 by the American community survey. That means 62.35% of the Hispanic/Latino population is of white or primarily white ancestry. Afterall, many whites here of Anglo ancestry or German that have been here awhile have a good chance of having black in them but traces of it have disappeared over time as the mixing happened probably 3 or 4 generations back and then kept mixing with white. Personally that number is probably 5-10% high since I know Hispanics can have this inferiority complex and want to be white Hispanic even though it's obvious they're not. Then you have Latinos which includes white Hispanics and anybody else born in Latin America whether German Argentinian to black Dominican to Itailian Brazialian to Japanese Peruvian. Those are all Latinos so that's a very broad term while Hispanic is what it means at it's root. Someone completey or mostly descendant from the Hispania province which is known as Spain today.
Also if you think 62.35% is high or even 50% it's because you're not paying attention. People you probably have spoken to or seen on TV but think they're white non-Hispanic are really Hispanic that might or might not speak Spanish anymore. Cameron Diaz doesn't speak Spanish but Christina Aguilera does. Also don't kid yourselves that whitest country in the Americas isn't America. It's Argentina and they don't like Americans too much but then again they don't like much of anyone.lol. This is coming from a proud 3rd generation American of Hispanic descent who speaks Spanish still though my kids might not.

As far as the application is concerned, it does not showup on my computer, consequently I am flying blind here, and non- biased. All those pages, with all those documents, the documents won't load for me. Consequently, all I am opinin about is simple, good, old fashioned common sense.

There is obviously a serious lack of moral responsibility and with the discarded credit report from "Andre" (another post), laws may very well have been broken BUT how can anybody accuse ACORN of exposing this family's plight by exposing this family's plight on a website? This is starting to look like the battle of the crack-heads here because one crack-head smokes more crack than the other crack-head…they're still both a couple of crack-heads! It just seems to me that if you're going to take the moral high ground against ACORN than you should conduct yourself that way and not be just as sleazy and irresponsible as ACORN. Kind of frightening that you can receive Food Stamp Benefits at a PO Box. That is an open invitation for fraud. With years of experience in how the system workd ACORN know where the holes are. They can sign people up fraudulantly and then get a kick back.
