ACORN Document Dump: ‘This Gives You a Private Sector Target’
by PubliusAs part of its strategy to build membership from the ground up, ACORN often first focuses on very local, neighborhood issues. ACORN correctly recognizes that if people can successfully organize for change in their own neighborhood, they will be more willing to organize for greater change in the overall community. A manual it provides its organizers suggests focusing on items like speed bumps, street lighting and vacant lots, as examples.
The manual provides a bit of background on the issue, some suggested actions and, helpfully, identifies “targets” for these actions.
Basic Issue Development for Organizers –
We draw your attention to two interesting sections. The first is on speed bumps:
If you’re tired of beating up on the City for speedbumps, and the City allows people to pay directly for speedbumps, you can do an ACORN safe streets pledge campaign targeting local businesses, and get each of them to sponsor a speedbump. Targetting autodealers would make a lot of sense here. This gives you a private-sector target. You could also do a campaign to set up a special taxing district to tax local businesses (or downtown businesses, maybe, this may be legally harder) to pay for traffic calming. (emphasis added)
The second deals with the issue of vacant lots:
This would be a massive neighborhood level campaign, but feasible where we’d built something. The strategy would be to force the City to make a plan to turn the vacant land it owns, or where taxes are delinquent, into an opportunity for decent housing affordable to our members. We demand the City pool the land, and go after a developer to agree to develop it at an affordable level. To add a smart growth twist to this, we could go after a big sprawl developer with deep pockets and demand some development in our neighborhoods as payback. The developers will argue they need subsidies to make it all work out affordably, which may be true. Call AHC…(emphasis added)
Again, this is an ACORN manual suggesting what is very close to a “shakedown” of private businesses. We’re stunned that the word “payback” is actually used in this document.
We assume “AHC” is “ACORN Housing Corporation,” the ACORN affiliate that receives considerable taxpayer support.

I find it difficult to explain my current state of mind, but it's one nearing elation. Because I have great faith in my fellow Americans – those that really love this country and deserve the moniker – I am reasonably sure we'll survive this. It will require a lot of work and a turnover of at least 50% of the House and Senate, as well as a careful eye on and gradual cleanup of the Judicial branch, but I think it's just the sort of work Americans do very well when their backs are up against the wall.
So why the elation? What we're seeing now is a naked orgy of greed from the power elite of a type that few could have imagined. Our liberties are being trampled, our Commander-in-Chief is woefully inadequate or downright incompetent at nearly everything (or, for the more conspiratorial among us, far too competent), our Congressional representatives are anything but. So again, why the elation? Well, because I compare what's happening today to what might have happened under a McCain administration.
These same policies would have been advanced by the self-designated ruling elite that infest our government, but they would have had to have been done much more stealthily. And in that case, it might have worked. Had they focused on one thing a year – perhaps a slow takeover of the auto industry, followed by a gentle expansion of Medicare under the guise of "helping the poor" – had they done that, they might have been able to boil the frog slowly. The American voter may never have woken up from its self-induced denial in time.
But instead, they tried to ram so many things through so fast that only the most gullible can possibly believe this will not crater our economy and with it the entire Grand Experiment that is America. Their "filibuster-proof" majority was enough rope and they couldn't help but hang themselves.
I may be too optimistic. I submit I'm not being Pollyanna; I know a lot of pain will occur and a lot of work will have to be done, but let's face it: a lot of things needed to be done anyway. But the source of my giddiness is that fact that, barring a military coup, this is a one-term administration that for all intents and purposes is already heading into lame duck status. The power-grubbers may get some monstrous health care bill through and even cap and trade, but I truly believe the American people will figure out how to make this Representative Republic work again the way the Founders intended. Senators may be recalled, members of the House will certainly lose their seats, and eventually any truly egregious legislation will get repealed.
In the end, the great irony may be that the best thing that happened to America was Obama, Pelosi and Reid.
And if not… well, if not then I will truly be saddened because that means that even the will of a free people is not enough to save humanity from itself. We've passed two centuries, and now it's time to see if those were our best or only a prelude to what we can be. When it comes down to it, my money is on America.
The left thinks that if all the stars were aligned properly and everyone cooperated, you could achieve perfection. It's called Communism. It hasn't worked before but the progressive elitists think they can do it better than everyone who came before them. Of course, they would have to be the ones in charge – as they bilk the system for everything they can. In a Communist society, corruption starts at the top.

I didn't see one of these new speedbumps in my neighborhood because it was covered with leaves, and it not only blew out my front shock absorbers on my motorcycle, but I almost had an accident as well. It cost me $700 to repair the damage, not to mention a new pair of underwear
But if it got another Democrat elected, I guess it was for a good cause.
