SEIU Leader Resigns After Threatening Legal Action Against Boy Scout

A union leader in Pennsylvania has resigned after being criticized for threatening legal action over an aspiring Eagle Scout’s volunteer project.
Nick Balzano, president of the Service Employees International Union’s Allentown chapter, submitted an unexpected resignation letter Thursday, along with a few other employees, SEIU spokesman Matt Nerzig told Foxnews.com.
The resignations came one day after FoxNews.com reported that Balzano had come under fire for saying earlier in the month that the SEIU might file a grievance against the city of Allentown for allowing 17-year-old Kevin Anderson to voluntarily clear a walking trail in a local park, instead of paying union members to do the work.
…Anderson, a member of Boy Scouts Troop 301 of Center Valley, spent more than 200 hours creating the 1000-foot path in Kimmets Lock Park along with fellow scouts, friends and parents.
The junior at Southern Lehigh High School told FoxNews.com the project transformed the “former illegal dump site” into a place where people can walk along the river while avoiding the busy road nearby.
“My trail will become a part of the 165-mile Delaware and Lehigh (D&L) Heritage corridor,” he said.

At my job I am not allowed to change a light bulb-instead I must submit a work order and wait a week for a electrian to do it. A lawn mower must be classified as a weed mower for me to use it—-this is the SEIU. They need this in order too place importance on even the simple tasks–it shows how important the members jobs are and how we can not do without thier work. It is time for us to say we can not 'DO' with the standard of the SEIU, Come on people. the truth is laws now protect your job and the Union itself see's this and fears this. Honestly, I don't know why this guy stepped down. That kind of thing happens all the time in Chicago (although the threat is rarely anything as nice as a lawsuit). I once had an electrician read me the riot act for running a 25 foot extension cord from the power supply at the stage on Navy Pier. Seriously, they are paid like $30/hr to do stupid stuff like that, and if you do it, they're afraid they'll lose their cushy job. And we wonder why poverty, illiteracy, and crime are the only thing the Dems can accomplish in Government. {sigh}

Rumor has it that they have their sights set on demanding a SEIU member to be the only ones allowed to flush toilets, claim that it is the mandate of sanitary members to do so. Not clear if one member will be placed in each household, or you will have to submit a work orders for each use.

As far as the other comment regarding Chicago union electricians and the work on tradeshows, here is an interesting point: Chicago just lost 2 MAJOR conventions to Orlando. Savings quoted by the tradeshow was something like 20 MILLION dollars less in Orlando!! Chicago does have those rules designed to force you to use WAY over priced union help to do everything. By the way I was born here and I employ some of the union guys who are not out of work. They work for me for cash seeing as how they cant get 35-40dollar and hour jobs anymore. One guy is a 17 year Journeyman Mason he works for me for 16 hr cash. When will we learn? Unions are just a half step away from the Government, Over priced and way underperforming

Even our Mayor Daley here in Chicago (18 years being voted in again and again) came out and said the unions need to get it together and relax the rules. But I think Daley is just seeing the ground shift underneath his feet and wants to avoid some of the problems. But Chicago and the unions are inherently corrupt!! I have a tenant who works for the water dept here in the city. His job is to start up the work truck and drive it to where the work need to be done. HE then SITS in the truck all DAY EVERY day. Why???? His job is classified by the union as a DRIVER. HE is NOT a laborer. Therefore according to union rules he can only drive. Total work about 2 hours per day the rest of the time he reads the 2 newspapers here in Chicago and a book which he also brings everyday. Pay for him …………….READY ? 29.50 / hour Plus a KILLER benefit package. Plus over time plus pension. Pay before Overtime not including benefits $61,000 year. For working as a driver for 2 hours per day!!!! This is the future of America until we implode because we cant pay guy 61K per year for 2 hours of work. Multiply that by all of the city departments and all of the stupid union rules and you will see why Chicago has a $500 MILLION dollar deficit THIS YEAR. And the highest sales taxes (10.25%) and some of the highest property taxes in the country. We need to STOP now and TAKE OUR COUNTRY back. This Liberalism and far left Dems will spend, tax us into 3rd world status.

As a Scoutmaster and father of a yuong man who just passed his Eagle Board of Review, I find this unpatriotic crap appalling. Rather than be angry about this project, this SIEU (so-called) leader should have rounded up 30 off duty union workers to get out there and help — purple t-shirts and all. It would have been good press for him and the Scouts and would have actually benefited someone rather than being a pain in the Obama.

The reason unions become so powerful is their direct relationship to organized crime, which leads directly to political corruption. That amount of power, control and money guarantees crime on a massive scale. Union thugs are the gatekeepers to jobs and politicians. If you think government controls your life, try to work in a state without a strong right to work law and a union shop.
Unions like SEIU and UNITE/HERE are in a position to gain a choke-hold on the entire service industry of this country. As this nation has moved from an industrial to a service based economy, the power of these unions has, and will continue, to increase. If they manage to set up shop and weaken right to work laws, in combination with a pro-union administration and a health care takeover, it's game over. These folks will literally be in a position to shut down this country. And don't think that isn't on their minds. SEUI, UNITE/HERE and ACORN are no joke. My son is a cub scout and his Den Leader said not to wear his uniform to school or he'll get picked on. What has happened? When I was a kid every boy wanted to be in the scouts and now they're a target for attacks.

i experienced one small taste of this sort of union BS about 20 yrs ago at a trade show at McCormick Center in Chicago. i don't remember the exact specifics, but it was something like if one employee couldn't set up the company's booth exhibit in less than 15 minutes, then you were required to hire one or more of their union 'decorators' at an obscene hourly rate- something like $75/hr/man base, 2x on saturdays, 3x on sundays, etc., etc., etc. it was freaking outrageous. the goons started hassling one tiny company over this and they finally agreed to use one guy for the one hour minimum. well, they almost came to blows when the union d-bag finished in about a half hour and started to leave for another job. the exhibitor said, "oh no you don't- we paid for an hour, you can just sit here until your hour is up."
unions can tolerate absolutely no competition from anyone for any reason. otherwise their grossly inefficient ways could not survive in the marketplace.

Both my sons are Eagle Scouts. I always asked the boys in the troop during board of reviews about their friends and if knew they were in the Scouts and how they were treated and from my experience they were not ridiculed. I think there are many, many boys who would love to be in the Scouts but are steered away by misinformation. My sons are grown now, but my husband and I still contribute to the Scouts. I think getting involved in Scouting is the best thing you will ever do for sons. SEIU thugs threatening an Eagle Scout is about as low as it can get.

I know so many people who are union members who claim not to agree with their leadership, but they never speak up against them. In the mean time, they keep pushing for wages and benefits that far exceed anything else in the communities in which they live and trash the efforts of people just trying to get the work done. I can't hang a picture in my office without closing the door so no one sees me do it — or I can submit a work order for the proper union person to do it and wait 6 months (don't want to interfere with their cribbage game you know…).
