Sen Reid: Opposition to Health Care Vote is ‘Orwellian’

Opponents of today’s motion to proceed on healthcare legislation who are pressuring others to vote no are practicing “Orwellian” tactics, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said today.
Reid appeared to take a shot at Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), who spoke right before him.
“Now he said, anyone who votes for this is going to have a lot of explaining to do,” Reid said during his floor speech today. “Now that is really Orwellian. That is Orwellian. Have a lot of explaing to do if they allow a debate to continue?”
Reid urged senators to support the motion to proceed scheduled for 8 p.m., saying that is only a motion to continue debate, not a vote for the legislation itself.
“All were asking today is to have a debate on it. I mean, why would anyone be afraid in supposedly the greatest debating society in the world to debate healthcare,” he said. “What are they afraid of?”
Reid may have aimed his remarks at the two remaining Democratic holdouts on the motion that needs 60 votes to pass.

Orwellian? Give me a break. As the healthcare debate is coming to a procedural head on the floor of the Senate tonight, news this week that the U.S. Postal Service lost money for the third year in a row—a staggering $3.8 billion, versus a loss of $2.8 billion last year—should give Middle America real concerns about government’s ability to effectively insert itself into individuals’ lives and deliver quality, affordable healthcare.
Government is not a bad thing. For those who think differently, view government as a necessary evil, whose purpose is to serve the people, not vice versa. As we were reminded by Abraham Lincoln in the Gettysburg Address in 1863, “. . . this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom—and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth. . .” Like it or not, government belongs to the people and it is here to stay.
The speed with which politicians are moving to rush a 2074 page healthcare bill through Congress with little debate leads Middle America to ask the obvious question, “What’s the hurry on an issue of such great importance?”
Well, the hurry is that this week Middle America picked up the scent of the rationing of healthcare with confusion over when and what women should get mammograms and pap smears. As time drags on, Americans are becoming increasingly concerned about how healthcare might be rationed, which has Democrats are as nervous as long-tailed cats in a room full of rocking chairs.
If ever there was an issue that touched every American personally, healthcare is it. Clearly, something has to give—there has to be some sort of healthcare reform, like the ability to shop for healthcare across state lines, a prohibition against rejecting pre-existing conditions, a requirement that every American have health insurance, etc. However, the need to get healthcare reform right greatly exceeds the political demands to just get “something” done and declare victory.
Middle America has been betrayed in a way, since every word of every page of the 2074 page bill isn’t being discussed and publicly debated in great detail by this administration, which campaigned on “transparency.” Sound public policy requires a lucid and thorough examination of this legislation, but it appears that once again, sound public policy is being traded for political expediency.
Obama’s advisors and Democratic consultants know that time is their enemy—the longer Congress takes to pass healthcare legislation, the less political capital they have to pass anything at all, and the more likely Middle America will thoughtfully consider how it might impact its own mammograms, pap smears, and healthcare needs.
The honeymoon period typically extended to new presidents is now coming to an end, if it hasn’t already come and gone. Unfortunately for President Obama and Democrats, they campaigned on delivering “healthcare reform” and staked their political future on it.
Middle America is not naïve, and will not allow itself to be played like a Stradivarius violin. Making healthcare reform their lynchpin issue was a very calculated decision by Democrats, not done hastily, but after much polling and many focus groups. Democrats have made healthcare a political football and Middle America is increasingly concerned about it.
Understandably, Democrats exploited the issue of healthcare reform for maximum political value during the campaign, but now the campaign is over and the wolf is almost at the door. Democrats know they have to deliver something, and this “something” really needs to be thought through with great deliberation and debate. If given a choice, Middle America would be better served with nothing, rather than “something” hastily rammed through Congress.

Sen. Reid, along with a great many liberals, clearly needs a dictionary. Maybe he should read "Nineteen Eighty-Four"? Hmm, scratch that, he might regard it as a "how to" book and only inspire him.
I'm all for debate on a worthy piece of legislation. However, when this 2000 page piece of garbage has little to do with "reform" and more to do with control, well…
Sen. Reid would do well to "write" a bill that has more to do with reform and less to do with control, then he might not get such opposition.
I do love the ironic twist of him referring to opposition to his bill as "Orwellian"…that is delicious. Would taste good deep-fried, too, but I bet there might be a line in the bill against deep-frying anything.
I'm all for that deep-frying stuff…how would a big tasty bird known as congress taste I wonder??we could always forget to set the timer….2010 can't come soon enough…we need a complete sweep of the house..remove them all…and then try them for crimes against America….

Anyone believing the government cost estimates just hasn't been paying attention to, well, any previous historical government cost estimates. This is going to cost a heapin' pile of cash.
Not much any of us can do at this point except fight for change in 2010. This new social program will be like other social programs and end up being a huge part of the nation's budget. And yes, we will continue to run staggering deficits until we either can't borrow anymore and/or have to run the government printing presses and print money. It won't end well at this point. (Read the book Empire of Debt).
The first thing we need to do is get rid of the Dems. The Repubs can wait. At least, they won't sell out the country in the process. The Dems are completely corrupt and want one party rule. For the most part, except for the Blue Dogs who have been intimidated, the Dems want one world government. Part of Obamao's worldwide apology tours is to let them know what a great guy he is (I hope y'all know I'm being sarcastic) and that they should blame America, but not him. He's still in campaign mode and if he succeeds in turning our sovereignty over to a world body, he wants to run for president of a new world order.
If Reid were not afraid of debate on this bill, he wouldn’t have to go for a cloture vote in the first place. This whole process of ramming a bill through by force and bribery, on a night-time weekend vote, is plenty reason enough to bring down the whole bill before it has a chance to breathe. Kill it. Kill it now before it’s alive. And that is a woman’s right to choose.
I'm disappointed in Joe Lieberman allowing this to move forward. He said he'll filibuster as will Ben Nelson, but 97% of bills that get to debate end up passing even if nothing is changed in the bill. Reid needs to be ostracized for this. I'm not kidding. I'm talking billboards all over Vegas outlining what he's done.
I had a thought about a way to simplify these War and Peace sized bills. Let's make a Constitutional amendment that the author of the bill has to wear the bill, printed in size 12 font, single spaced, hanging from the bottom of a neck-tie, until it is passed or defeated. ____Might give a whole new meaning to "red state" and "blue state".__

The sad humor about this is we will pay the taxes but by the time the bill actually tries too be implemented it is a good chance the US will be bankrupt and this Health Care Bill won't be worth the parchment paper it is written on. Since when did any gov't body leave an acount untouched? We are soo indebt right now do you actually think there will be any money in the gov't system to implement a National Health Insurance in 5 yrs? Get real!! What do you think a dying person being denied treatment due too this Health Care extravagancy be willing to do?
