Sen. Lincoln on Board as 60th Vote: Enjoyed Her Senate Career

Sen. Blanche Lincoln is a yes for debating health reform, but a no for the public option, and she and fellow centrists are making clear they expect Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to scrap his current plan for a government-run insurance program.
Lincoln (D-Ark.) announced Saturday that she’d deliver the deciding vote to push forward with a sweeping health reform plan, ending days of speculation over whether President Barack Obama’s signature priority would proceed to the Senate floor or suffer a debilitating blow.
But Lincoln and fellow moderate Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.) also laid down strong objections to the public health insurance plan included in the Senate bill – saying they couldn’t support the bill if it came to the floor in that form.
“I am opposed to a new government administered public health care plan as a part of comprehensive health care reform, and I will not vote in favor of the proposal that has been introduced by Leader Reid as it is written,” Lincoln said.
Lincoln, who is facing a tough-reelection fight in 2010, also put fellow Democrats on notice about the political stakes in her race — saying she’s already faced some $3.3 million in ads trying to sway her vote on the bill, from the left and the right.
And she laid down a laundry list of concerns, most of which also are shared by her fellow centrists – that the bill not increase the deficit, protects seniors on Medicare, makes insurance more affordable for small businesses and enhances competition with private insurers, all without a public option.
The final vote is scheduled for 8 p.m., but with Lincoln’s announcement in hand, Reid has the 60 votes he needs to begin debate on the bill after Thanksgiving and break any Republican attempt to hold up debate. Republicans said they wouldn’t give up the fight.

We had always been under the impression that the best way to signal your opposition to something was to vote against it. If one opposed a public option plan, then the best way to ensure the final bill doesn’t have a public option, presumably, would be to defeat any bill that contains a public option. Silly us. Sen. Lincoln is obviously clever enough to be against the public option while voting in favor of the public option.

What a joke ! More LIBspeak from Lincoln. She says she will not support Reid's bill iin its current form. This means NOTHING ! As a former Michigan lobbyist I can assure you this has to with only one thing….money from the source she is holding out for. You cannot vote for debate and then state you will not vote for the bill with the public option. It's a CYA move and she will cave ! You are EITHER for the Reid bill or you are not ! It's merely a game she is engaged in. She loses either way.

There's so much deception. There's no doubt that when the Senators vote to close debate in a few weeks, Lincoln, Bayh, Nelson, Landrieu, and Leiberman will be given everything they ask for in the amendment process to ensure they get the 60 votes to close debate. But it won't matter. When the bill goes to conference to be merged with the House bill, many of their amendments, including the amendment to remove the public option, will be thrown out.
That's because final passage of the merged bill only requires 51 votes in the senate, not 60. So the moderates noted above and every Republican can vote against the final bill, which will almost surely have a public option restored during the conference, and it will pass. The moderate Dems can then home and say they didn't vote for the bill with a public option.
But they will be gigantic dishonest frauds for doing so because they know that the final merged bill will almost surely have a public option. They should never have allowed the bill to come to the floor for debate if they are really against a public option.

If the democrats really had any backbone, they would choose this moment to stand athwart this Marxist freight train and push back. Push back the role and obscene cost of government until it resembles something other than a serpent swallowing its own tail; push back until we discover anew the ideal that we, as individuals, can take care of ourselves; push back until everyone realizes that the pervasive influence of government has never been benign and that it’s influence is now parasitic.

1. A bad economy makes repeal more likely; remember, the taxes take effect immediately; the "benefits" take 5 years. How many people, once they figure this out, will be happy?
2. You're assuming that the mandate given to the opposition in 2010 isn't veto-proof. Does that mean the GOP getting all those seats? No — I easily see conservative dems backing a repeal movement if the country votes solidy in 2010.
I actually think that passing this bill is the worst thing the dems could ever do. It's a non-starter because it simply can't be paid for — the medicare cuts wont happen (they never do), there'll be other budget adjustments and amendments to other bills that will neuter so many parts to this that the tax revenues will never materialize in the sizes they need. Essentially, it will be a bill that dooms the Democrats to oblivion. It is hugely unpopular and once the true cost is shown (after all the neutering) there'll be no option but too repeal it.
Well that proves the real point, most of the Senators are stupid and don’t really have a back bone, they don’t know when to say NO. Any of those that voted to debate the bill should be voted out of office because they don’t know the word NO and keep spending money we don’t have. Reid wants to take as many of the Dems with him when he goes since he knows this is his last term.
These two ladies are NUTS! I lived in AR when Slick Willie was gov. and was in LA when Landrieu stole that seat. The people were ready with pitchforks and ropes threatening Billary after they raised hunting and fishing licenses. They promptly lowered them. LA is one of the most corrupt states in the Union and…. I hate to say it, but these ladies are putting their personal safety at risk if they return home. I'm just glad I'm in a state now where I actually have representation.

Are you really sure about that? I am not trying to lob a bomb here; I am asking a dead-serious question. Time after time, folks have said throw the bums out, but they mean the bums in other districts. They are perfectly happy with their own bum, as long as that bum keeps bringing home the bacon.

My tactic in such communications is not one of "I will never buy your product again!" It is more one of "are you aware that you are, by your sponsorship, supporting commentary that goes against both the interests of your customers, and of your own?"

I am not a native Arkansan, but I am going to work on Gilbert Baker's campaign. He is the only Republican with real experience running against her. I have heard nothing but good things about him since I have been here. Several folks at the gym where I work out know him personally and say he is a salt of the earth kind of guy. And VERY fiscally conservative. Has a sound, fiscally responsible record in his State Senate career.

There have been times, in the past, when Congress has over ridden presidential vetoes; though I can't, at the moment, recall that ever happening to a DEM president.
Remember the 58 other DEMOCRAT senators that voted to destroy the freedom we have in this country…every sentiment written here goes for them also. We have 2 here in Virginia that voted for this crap…they do not come up for reelection until 2012 and 2014 but I promise they will feel the wrath of Virginia citizens then also.

I don't think I am giving them too much credit. It's all about re-election for them. If the GOP holds majorities (even substantial majorities), going with the flow (or heck, even changing parties if it looks like the Democrat Party is in real trouble) is sometimes the best way to stay "in power."
Not that any of that makes trustworthy, or, frankly, someone who should be allowed anywhere near the US Congress.
