Columbia Journalism Review: Breitbart ‘Blackmailing’ Attorney General

Memo to Sean Hannity, who is calling for James O’Keefe, Hannah Giles, and Andrew Breitbart to get a “journalism award” for their video sting of ACORN: Generally, when in possession of what one believes to be newsworthy information, the journalistic thing to do is get it out to the public—not attempt to blackmail the attorney general.
In an exchange that begins around the 4:30 mark, Breitbart says:
Not only are there more tapes, it’s not just ACORN. And this message is to Attorney General Holder: I want you to know that we have more tapes, it’s not just ACORN, and we’re going to hold out until the next election cycle, or else if you want to do a clean investigation, we will give you the rest of what we have, we will comply with you, we will give you the documentation we have from countless ACORN whistleblowers who want to come forward but are fearful of this organization and the retribution that they fear that this is a dangerous organization. So if you get into an investigation, we will give you the tapes; if you don’t give us the tapes, we will revisit these tapes come election time.

It's borderline, but Breitbart is giving Holder a chance to be a hero by doing his job. Won't happen though, Holder is too busy playing stooge to the Left to ever do the job he has sworn to do.
It is not "borderline" or "blackmail" at all when you simply ask someone to do their job. Blackmail has to constitute some sort of self-serving demand.

Breitbart isn't playing around any more. He knows exactly whats up with the way things work these days. He is a citizen of this country who isn't taking the government's shit anymore. What he is doing is playing like winning the game matters and he is playing to win. He isn't just playing against Holder, he is playing against the entire strategy of the Collectivist wing who wants to fundamentally change America. He is a great American and I am thankful that he is willing to fight burtally and mercilessly.
We are one nation, but two people. At this point, all political discourse in this country is dress rehearsal for civil war.

When Private Citizens are Forced, to FORCE the Government to act, to do it's job, to uphold and fulfill the oaths they have sworn to uphold, we are literally witnessing the demise of western civilization. If the MSM were doing its job, Columbia Journalism Review, then they'd be all over this story still, pressuring Holder to do the right thing. They'd also have already ferreted out the SEIU intimidation that's revealed on this site today. So, maybe if your priority were to urge someone to commit acts of journalism, that would work out better for you.

don't blackmailer's usually ask for money? he is just asking for them to do their job, he is even willing to turn over all he has if they will do their job. but i think he said they will only get a copy, so if they collect the material, and try to bury it, he will release it to the public. if he was truley a blackmailer, he would ask for some money, i would tell him to make sure he does not ask for dollars, since its value is questionable, and they own the printing press. ask for gold, euros, or even yen, skip the greenbacks.

No one should take lightly what these three individuals are doing for America. The crime involving a threat for purposes of compelling a person to do an act against his or her will, or for purposes of taking the person's money or property.
Reminds me more of what Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi are doing to get congress to vote for there bills.

Just think, if he wouldn't have put the videos out a little at a time, by now the entire episode would have been swept under the rug and ACORN would be doing business as usual. As it is there are probably millions (no thousands) of Americans that do not even know about ACORN because they get their "news" from MSNBC and CNN. I just wonder if Holder is ever going to do his job and investigate. Congress should have made them appear and open their books long ago.
Several tapes have been released and like President O’Dumbo, the AG has buried his head in the sand. Save some, release them during the 2010 election cycle and the politicians will spread the word faster, further, and with more impact than the NYSlimes and the rest of the fringe media ever will.
The Left hates when you play their game against them. If the situation were reversed and it was the Left using these tactics against the Right, the Columbia Journalism Review would be applauding it.
What Brightbart is doing is playing the Left's game and doing it much better than they ever could. This is a tactic that needs to be done as you can't play a fair and above board game with the Left. BTW: did you read my blog post at American Thinker? It is a parody in the style of "… you might be a progressive." It has moved off the front page but it is in the archive.
I bet Breitbart is probably just trying to get the media to report on this story and others. A search on Acorn and SEIU in Google news mostly results in hits on internet news blogs and Fox news. That is extremely frustrating to me and it's probably driving Breitbart and Co. crazy.
I don't think Holder is going to investigage Acorn. Especially now to save face. I want to be wrong.

Is it just me, or have any of you lost faith in the Government? I had very little prior to the election of 2008, and very little afterward, but I kept my mouth shut and never said one negative word against the current Regime, until September 1st, 2009. What changed me? THEY DID.
I no longer believe in the Government to do anything right, for anyone. The only people they represent, are they themselves and their own self interests. They should resign en masse, in shame. Obama and Holder should be the first to step down in disgrace.

Memo to the Columbia Journalism Review – Webster's has all kinds of definitions, including one for "blackmail". Do yourself a favor and look up the actual meaning of words before you use them in a short, knee jerk reaction, hit piece.
"….lost faith in the Government?" I'm losing faith in our follow Americans. The ones that say "oh, I get so mad at politics I don't even want to think about it." Those are the people that I'm losing faith in. I ask, "if you don't stand up and say something, who will." I'm sick that the average American sits on their damn asses and expects someone else to pick up the slack and make the voice heard. Seriously!
Personally I don't see why he is doing this. I have little confidence there can be a legitimate investigation no matter what promises for one are made. No one really knows what he has. Breitbart could have just secretly held the tapes and released them before the 2010 election and effected political change. That seems like the most sensible course of action to me. Oh well. I'm not Breitbart.
Glenn Beck had an author on tonights show – if you missed it try and catch it over the weekend .. a man with more COMMON SENSE mentality – he puts all of CONGRESS to shame… if my kids were older I would have had them watch it to understand what we are really up aganist….. I am with you. I lost most all faith in the Government a long time ago. I've been voicing my opinion since the Bush bailout. But, for me, all bets were off by the end of the day on November 10, 2008. I would love to live in the land of what "should" happen, however it's kind of like going on a ride in Fantasyland at Disney. The ride is short and sweet, but never lasts as long as the wait to get on the ride. What should happen will probably never happen. To expect the blowhards and egomaniacs in Washington to simply step down in some magical moment of enlightenment and personal shame is akin to wishing on rainbows. It does the psyche good, but is an unobtainable goal.
We need obtainable goals. The 2010 elections are an obtainable goal. Vote out all incumbents, particularly those career politicians who have never had a real job – one outside of government. If We The People can do that, it will be like hitting the reset button on the computer when it has frozen. Our current representatives have "locked up" the Constitution. The Constitution is the operating system that drives our great Republic. We must hit the reset button and free the Constitution to rule once again.
Once we accomplish that goal, then we can go after term limits. Term limits will greatly reduce possibility of the marriage of career politicians and corrupt special interest groups that have brought about the quagmire currently defining American politics today. Term limits will bring us closer to the vision of self-government our founding fathers attempted to insure for us.
Andrew Breitbart is a hero. So are James O'Keefe and Hannah Giles. They are taking on the government and giving all of us hope- the real hope (not the fake Obama hope) that we law abiding, tax paying, USA loving citizens can get our country back before it is too late. It is giving us courage to speak up and say and do what is right. God Bless them and watch over them.
Breibart has already explained this. If they release all these videos at once they would be sidelined by the NBC/GE machine and forgotten in a matter of weeks. With Breibart releasing these one at a time over an extended period he is keeping the NBC goons and their allies guessing as to the content of the next which in turn makes them write articles of speculation and falsehoods. Then Breibart releases the next video and proves them to be fools. Keep it up Andrew!

What are we as Freedom Loving, God Fearing, Gun Carrying, Constitution Studying Republic Members going to do about it? When is enough enough? Do we wait and see the results of the next election? Do we wait until 2012? Or are we waiting to see if CONgress disobeys the will of the people again on this Health Care debacle? When do we stop talking and start doing?

After a very hard week without barely any TV or politics, this is the best !!!. It lightens my heart and I thank Andrew for this. You are playing the right game and as someone said, we need to play their game if we are going to win this.
The only thing I disagree with is making a deal with Holder. He's a liar and will do everything possible to get those tapes. His investigation will be minimal and a few breadcrumbs thrown Andrew's way. Holder needs to get fired…period. The country needs to see those tapes.

One issue: you CAN actually blackmail an honest man, and it has indeed happened multiple times in the past.
That being said, even if this is blackmail, it is perhaps the most justified I have seen outside of cloak-and-dagger business.
Otherwise, it's unlikely that you can get an Obama administration official to do their jobs. Now if one of them can crack open a Macroeconomics 101 book and read the chapter about Fiscal Policy–that would be doing something.

I have a feeling that the states (or, at least the ones that still know the meaning of Liberty and Freedom) are working on 10th Amendment issues over the Health Care. They all know it will most likely get crammed through and they also know that the people not wanting it are a hell of a lot closer to their state capitals than DC.
I imagine that once the states start moving to declare this crap sandwich unconstitutional, DC will start threatening… and then…well, who knows (actually, I think a lot of us DO know, but would rather not think about that path).
Right now, I think it is a race between that scenario and the economy imploding. Either one will spark the explosion…

Beck's guest was author Vince Flynn, who has a new book out. Flynn has lots of contacts in the CIA. If I recall correctly, he is former CIA himself.
In my opinion it's not black mail. However, if people think it is right off the bat, without seeing what's on the tapes, then also right there is an admission of something damaging on those tapes.
Looks like a portion of the so-called "stimulus" money is going to stimulate the votes of Dem holdouts. Reid is using our tax dollars to bribe Dem senators over a healthcare bill that virtually no one wants. It's all a scam to prop up the unions and thank the malpractice lawyers for putting The Won in office.

The (sad but true) irony here is that Andrew could publish a list along the lines of "these are the individuals we have evidence against" and include the name of just about Every politician – along with numerous companies and organizations – they'd all start sweating bullets, as they All have something to hide. Even the DNC and RNC – they're all corrupt to the bone…if we're going to actually succeed in a revolution of morality and principle, it's pretty hard to do it with the big players of our two-party system.
I appreciate the Ross Perot aspect as a reason to work within the system – but at a certain point, even that is too much of a concession to make if we want to hold on to our dignity.

Believe me, I do understand. I, too, get frustrated with citizens who refuse to act responsibly, and they are legion. But even that could be attributed, in part, to the widely accepted idea that “government is supposed to take care of us.” They are taking care of us, all right!
Apathy and disinterest are part of the current government's plan: they want to make things difficult to understand; they want to cover people up to their eyeballs in 2,000 page bills that few have time to read; they want people to be more interested in what Britney or Angelina said than the sneaky tactics they are employing to tear this country apart.
For years, politicans have divided our populace for their own personal gain. They have pitted one group against another until the melting pot has become the “clumped pan.”

Further, many of the Vietnam draft-dodgers are now power-players at our universities, because as long as they stayed in school, they didn't get drafted into the military. I believe that American education was "dumbed down" on purpose. I believe that tv was allowed to become what formerly would have been R-rated. I believe that some “music” lyrics were allowed to become X-rated. All those coupled with Johnson's "Great Society" have done tremendous damage to our country and its people.
I do not believe any of the things above are accidents, but part of a carefully crafted plan, woven by very patient, very devious people.

He's playing a clever game. No one can come after him for this without exposing themselves. If the AG wants to nail him for withholding information, it gives Andrew a national platform beyond what he currently has. This is more of a threat. Breitbart is threatening to damage the political party Holder is aligned with, at a very inconvenient time, unless Hold does what Breitbart is asking: investigate ACORN. Now, you can debate the merits of threatening, but blackmail this is not.

Amen! The so called "fa left" has been working on this model for the last eighty years. As my hero, Mark Levin, has stated repeatedly, "taking our party back and rolling back the agenda of the left is going to take time and we have to be as resolute as they have. One step at a time. The left has chipped away(sometimes very small fragments) at our liberty during this time and we are going to need to glue those fragments back in place. The 2010 elections will be here before we know it and we(true Conservatives) must be ready to vote out the so called "modeate Republicans" and get some constitutional conservatives in office to stop the bleeding. Then in 2012 we can put a like minded Prez in place so that we can start to roll back the damage.

I made a bunch of phone calls to congressmen for the first time in my life in the last couple months, and I drove half a day to the Tea Party protest at the Capital before the House voted on Health Care a few weeks ago.
I'm 30 and been an Independent since I could vote and haven't been involved in anything other than showing up at the polls.
I told my wife one day that I couldn't stand complaining and not doing anything anymore, and I drove up to DC. It was a pretty amazing experience, and my wife, who is not politically minded at all, was very proud of me.
There is plenty people can do. The only ones that don't help are the ones that decide right of the bat that their voice doesn't matter. Every voice matters.
I'm going to get involved in my local politics now, so I can start to make a difference, and maybe I'll eventually get involved at a higher level. But anyone who stands by and watches is sealing their own fate.
Andrew should have handled the "threat" to Holder privately. He is playing with the big boys and could be way over his head. Now he has given them plenty of time before the elections to discredit him and destroy him in a number of ways. Don't count on anything coming of this.
He is handling this just as he should, publicly. If he were to handle this privately with Holder and Obama, it would get no where and he might even end up dead. The Obama administration needs to be confronted, excoriated and embarrassed publicly for all of their dirty dealings.

The CJR's assessment is based on old rules and old assumptions of behavior.
The old rules were that the broader press would act in the public interest, the whole 'fourth estate' thing, that media outlets would be in energetic competition with one another to get the story out to the public, and that their efforts would either force the hand of law enforcement or roll law enforcement up as part of the broader conspiracy e.g. Watergate.
The new rules are that that broader press sees itself as the screening force for the present administration and its adjunct entities like ACORN. Its constituency is now the deep-pocketed individuals and organizations of the Left, it will act in the public interest only if, and only as far as, it is humiliated into doing so. If it is not the enemy, it is at best neutral; some elements cautiously friendly, some virulently hostile.
In the new game, to spread his cards on the table as the CJR would have Breitbart do would be to invite the other participants quickly to pocket them, walk away, and pretend the game had never been played.
I don't even see it as a threat, Andrew is publicly cooperating with the investigation. Andrew isn't stupid, lets face it, these boys play for keeps, so Andrew must protect his backside, as well as Hannah and James, respectively. I for one do not trust but a few people in congress. I just pray that we can wait till next year, I wouldn't put anything past this bunch, they really think they are all Dr. Cocktoe, and instead of just "SanAngles" it'll be something like NeoAmerica, or some other tribal name. I'm 62, so I remember presidents back to Eisenhower, and I can truly say that I'm frightened for my grandchildren, I just pray America is still here.
Ok let’s look at this in real time, how long has it been since the first tap was aired and to date nothing except a token of holding back money from this group. We also know that SEIU in involved in a lot of what is going on but nothing is being done there either. The administration is just sitting on their hands trying to “PUNCH BACK TWICE AS HARD”, as Obama put it, against those that are trying to clean up not only the corruption ACORN with housing but also the voter fraud that is running wild in this country.
So this in not “blackmail” its trying to get the dead beats off their back sides and do the job they are put there to do, keep America and it’s people safe (not shove healthcare down their throats, or any thing else).
A couple more thoughts – Breitbart has put a nakedly partisan choice in front of AG Holder – the role of the AG should be, at least in some tiny measure, independent of the political calculations of a partisan administration.
The suggestion that more – and potentially more widely damaging – videos will be held for next year's election forces the AG to act in some way that can be viewed as an effort to protect fading Democrat prospects at the next poll.
To date, the administration – including Holder's office – has kept their refractory blankets tucked over their heads, waiting for the flames to pass. Breitbart's basically now offering suffocation as an alternative to immolation.

Look at how they took Jack Ryan out in the Illinois Senate Race by opening his divorce records and finding something bad about him. Because Divorce records almost never contain lies, right? Especially from the wife who was the adulterer and the reason for the divorce.
Anyway, my point is, they don't play fair and if you're going to blackmail them, be careful because they may change the rules of the game and shift the leverage to their benefit. Be careful my friend. I hope you know what you're doing. Regardless, we have your back.

100% correct. Andrew is just stating a fact that additional information will be released unless AG Holder does his job which he shoild have done awhile ago. Instead AG Holder is more concerned about grandstanding over the issue of providing illegal combatants with constitutional rights something that has never been done in the history of our country. I guess AG Holder is just sooo much smarter than our 230+ year history.
