Yes, everyone bows to everyone in Japan. But to shake hands while bowing…well…There is also the question of whether this is strictly a protocol issue or a continuation of the One’s Global Apology Tour. Color us cynical.

How low will Obama go?!
Obama thinks he will crown himself (Obama) King of the World, as soon as he (Obama) has successfully destroyed America.
This incident has been discussed to death on other threads since yesterday, but no one has ever answered this simple questions. Have other Presidents bowed to the man in this position when on official tours? I saw the one article where Clinton "almost" bowed and the press ripped him for it. Also the other question that hasn't been brought up is can we now call the man what he is "a liar" because of his bow to the Middle Easter king/prince whatever, and us being told there was something on the floor he was retrieving. This buffoon is a total disgrace to the position and has no clue as how to behave now that he's been put in charge.
Who are you going to believe, Me or your lying eyes? I don't know about you but I have been calling the lying SOB a liar for a couple of years now and no one has proven me wrong yet.

They would have great difficulty with it all. LONG ago, I produced a documentary (then WWII was only 45 years old) – it was a retrospective, so really it was the memories and experiences and with those of the ones who waited their return. Among the many vets I spent a great deal of time with were several who were survivors of the Bataan Death March and more heinous than that the imprisonment that followed – first on the islands and then as the Allies readied to take back the islands – they were shipped to mainland Japan and the work camps (one survivor, was dying of cancer, as he and other prisoners (and Japanese solders) were sent in to Hiroshima after the bomb was dropped for clean up. After the war, they knew the Japanese were our allies and many had friends who were Japanese-while they knew it didn't make sense, they still harbored deep resentment, bordering on hatred of the Japanese.
GregZ – you so nailed it … “our Community Organizer in Chief” – he truly is! So much is made of the “First BLACK American” elected to the office of the president. (To me it has always been the least credible of reasons for electing or not electing someone to office – the “color of their skin” – except for people who are PLAID .. Sorry, might sound a bit bigoted, but something about Plaid People that I just don’t trust.) – but I think we have the dubious distinction of having elected our first “Straw Dog” as a president. It is more telling and more important to know who the “handlers” are, for it is they who are the one’s who are making this “power grab” and in a real sense raping our country in the process.

Obama is an embarrassment when he's dealing with foreign dignitaries. Like with running the country, he has absolutely no clue what to do.
It's not a lack of knowing protocol. There is no way he'd repeat this after his Saudi bow, unless it was intentional, as that one was. I have no doubt that it is part of his "Hate America" theme.
Great thread…..most of what I wanted to say has been said. But, for a man that supposedly was born in Hawaii near Pearl Harbor….you would think he should be more sensitive to that "day that shall live in infamy", December 7, 1941….but nooooooooooo…….he forgets everything near and dear to the hearts of true Americans…..and then apologizes to everyone around the globe for what he perceives to be our wrongs. Saw a video clip the other day on Beck where Obummer was delivering some sort of "sermon". Didn't have his teleprompter, so was reading from a script on the podium. He would look down, memorize a few words; look up to the left and deliver them. Look down, then up and deliver them straight ahead. Look down, then up and deliver them to the right. Over and over, ad naseum. I turned to my wife and commented, "there he is, the Bobble Head in Chief,"
I will give him credit, he can read a great speech! As a President, he has no clue. He is a marionette, with Lord knows who pulling the strings.

Okay, first – one does not shake hands AND bow at the same time. The other thing to note is that Emperor Akihito is shaking hands. The Japanese do not shake hands. He is actually trying to show deference to American custom as a good host, but Obama is too protocol-challenged to know that. A simple Google search before the meeting on Japanese greeting customs on his blackberry would have…well..so much for the Information savviness of The One. Provided, I'm a bit of an otaku when it comes to Japan, but seriously, he should have known not to do this. If the Emperor bowed to him, then it would have been respectful to return the bow, BUT ONLY TO THE SAME DEPTH AS THE EMPEROR (that is a sign of Equals, and from a geo-political perspective, since both are heads of state and "rulers" of their respective countries they would be considered Equals). Well, while we don't know his exact grades at Columbia one of the officials there said he didn't make the honor roll – and that was while getting a Mickey Mouse/Political Science degree.
I actually suspect that he may not have graduated Magna Cum Laude at Harvard, but that he has merely lied about it for a long time (to get jobs) and that the damn media never bothered to check his story – they just took his word at it.

I have seen that the press ripped into Bill Clinton for giving a small nod to the Emperor when he was President. The foolish press did not understand the Protocol then and they do not understand it now.
It is Protocol the world over that the head of state does not bow before another head of state. They are equals. The bowing remains as an act of subservience.
In this instance the bowing makes the USA subservient to Japan. This is insulting to Americans and equally insulting to the rest of us. I am Australian. I know about what the Japanese did in those camps. Burma Railroad anyone? Ask an Australian what happened on the Burma railroad. It was harrowing.
As a matter of habit, and as an ordinary citizen, when I greet a Chinese or Japanese person I will give a very short nod of my head, just like Bill Clinton would have done to the Emperor. What Bill did was acceptable because he was probably responding to the Emperor with that short dip of the head. However, the deep bow of Obama goes way too far. It is a breach of Protocol for a start, and it has significance in terms of body language.
