Wednesday Open Thread: Armistice Day Edition
by PubliusHappy Armistice Day!

Next year, it is possible no more veterans of the Great War will be alive. Take a moment and think what it takes to ‘go over the top’ at a place like the Somme.

When Peter Schweizer uncovered evidence of insider trading by Republican chairman of the House Financial Services Committee Spencer Bachus (R-AL), and 60 Minutes reported on it, I was the first person to call for Rep. Bachus to resign. That was November 14, 2011. Now, with news that the Office...

General Pershing wanted to march to Berlin otherwise we would just have to fight the Germans again latter.

Thanks you for posting this with the CORRECT title!
Amen to that…. Todays brave and strong military still have the guts and fortitude necessary to protect this great country and its citizens. Sadly it's the Libs, Socialists, Democrats and Marxists that lack the guts to protect us !
Kudos and gratitude to our Armed Forces for all you have done for us. You Democrats and sissified Libs can return to your sandboxes and basements and PRAY that you never have to meet the military in a conflict. Oh what I would pay to watch you screaming, crying and running in circles, white faced with fear and crapping your shorts !
Sometimes these "holiday's" are a harsh, stark reminder of some of the more unpleasant realities of life. Years ago, I knew some veterans of the Great War, every small town had some, my uncle was one. World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, both Gulf Wars and Afghanistan. I have known men who served in all of them. My family has served in them. I have always marveled, that those who saw the worst, and served the hardest, talk the least about it. I have known a lot of heros, and they don't like the word. Hardship forges humility.
Didn't every person who voted for an unconstitutional bill commit the crime of treason? If lawyers who write legal opinions can be charged with a crime, why not congress people who violate their oath of office?
Because they are above the law. For years, they have slithered around on thier bellies, and weaseled their way around to the point, that they have exempted themselves from any responsibility. Essentially, when it comes to errors and omissions, they have effectively gotten themselves a blanket hold harmless. They are unaccountable.
God bless all who serve, and have served in the American Military. We owe them and their families, an eternal debt of gratitude, this great country rest on the foundation of their sacrifices.
You are correct. It is time WE THE PEOPLE hold them accounttable. The 2010 election cycle is going to be remarkable!

Though I am a veteran, I always think of Nov 11 as Armistice Day, being that my grandfather, an immigrant from Eastern Europe, fought in the Great War. The Great War is the great tragedy of the 20th century. Millions died and we’re still dealing with the resultant mess from the collapses of three empires (Czarist Russia, Ottoman Empire, Austro-Hungarian Empire), and I won’t even go into the Communist infestation, National Socialism and Hitler, or Fascism.
We have to remember and tell our children; if we don’t, no one will.
And someone explain to me why we worry at all what Europeans think about us. The French speak French instead of German, the Germans speak German instead of English, and the Poles no longer have to speak Russian. The United States military is, and always has been the greatest force for freedom in history.
Thanks to all who serve and have served. A grateful nation salutes you.
You are right. It is apalling that kids graduate school today, not even knowing the history of World War I and World War II. They barely have touched on Korea or Vietnam. if a country forgets its history, it is doomed.
IT IS THE SOLDIER
It is the Soldier, not the minister
Who has given us freedom of religion.
It is the Soldier, not the reporter
Who has given us freedom of the press.
It is the Soldier, not the poet
Who has given us freedom of speech.
It is the Soldier, not the community organizer
Who has given us freedom to protest.
It is the Soldier, not the lawyer
Who has given us the right to a fair trial.
It is the Soldier, not the politician
Who has given us the right to vote.
It is the Soldier who salutes the flag,
Who serves beneath the flag,
And whose coffin is draped by the flag,
Who allows the protester to burn the flag.
They just observed a Minute of Silence on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange, followed by a Marine Corp bugler blowing Taps. A retired Marine General is going to ring the opening bell. It is nice to see New York honor our Veterans with a modicum of dignity.
Yet, kids ‘know’ how ‘bad’ America is.
Finally, where do you go after you’ve lived in land which was almost like heaven?
The middle east?
China?
The entertainment blogs are buzzing with young writers making comparisons between the new show "V" and the Obama administration. They are saying that the show was developed to be a comment on the Obama Administration. They could not be more wrong.
The new show has the same plot line as the old show. Maybe the bloggers are too young to have seen the original? Sexy aliens wearing man-skin suits over lizardman bodies show up and offer to eradicate human disease through high technology in exchange for a simple chemical they need to save their home world. The whole time they are subverting the media, using art to influence, trading favors with the rich and powerful, indoctrinating the young, asking people to report others who are opposed to the new order, attacking those who are vocal against them, and Oh! By the way, herding people into cattle cars (I mean storage compartments on the ships) to go to their deaths.
(cont.)
One of the scenes in the original miniseries that has stuck with me since I first saw it is when the old jew holocaust survivior showed a young man how to tag a Visitor "Friends" recruitment poster with the letter "V". At the time, I thought the show was a metaphor for how the Nazis gained power in Germany.
The new "V", just like the old "V", is not about the Nazis or "Obamania". It is a remake of the "Wolf in Sheep's Clothing" fable. Instead of a wolf infiltrating the sheepherd's flock to take away his source of food and income, "V" is about a general oppressor coming to take away your freedom, your source of food and income, under the guise of bringing safety and prosperity. It is about the strategy used, not a specific incident.
If parallels can be drawn between both the Nazis and the Obama Administration, it is their own fault. There is an end to that fable and it is the same end that the Nazis met.

We don't go anywhere…Here is where we make our stand and here is where we fight! If you think the Founding Father's didn't have an inkling something like this would happen you are wrong. They expected us to do as they did. Be part of the TEA Partys, help get conservative candidates into the General Elections as Republicans…stomp on Pelosi with a 2010 reversal she will never forget and then take aim at the White House, support the strongest Conservative possible….we never surrender. Surrender is for the French!
WWI is probably the one single moment where the world changed utterly and forever. I can't exactly find another moment in history, beyond the birth of Jesus Christ that really had such a profound effect. Maybe the Battle of Tours but………Never forget the Somme, Gallipoli, Verdun…….Bellau Wood………………….
Leon Neyfakh (pronounced Neeeeeiiiigggh! F*ck), moving up from the Hahvahd Crimson to the NY Observer, labels Andrew "Drudge's Henchman" . The attacks of a thousand cuts, a million slights, ridicule at every opportunity. They are torn between a full Limbaugh and trying to ignore AB. I expect Sheriff Joe Biden or Rahm will call Andrew a "teabagger" some time in the near future. http://bit.ly/38z5Q2
God bless our veterans who fought so Obama and the Democrats have the freedom to take away my freedom. BUT, BLESS THEM MORE FOR FIGHTING SO I HAVE THE RIGHT TO RESIST!!!
Bravo! The time is now, the place here, the people are you and I, there is no one else, there is no where else, there is no better time, this is it. If we fail now, we may never make it all the way back.
Cowboy, yes it is nice. At 11 am they also have another moment of silence where they slowly part curtains to unveil plaques around the trading floor that honor our veterans. The trading floor is VERY patriotic.
Such is the price of freedom. Never forget, never shame, and never allow the ignorant to dishonor or twist it (ie. the scalding piece of tripe known as "Oh what a lovely war.").
They have already twisted Vietnam, now they are working on Korea and WWI. And if those get reduced to a simpering pile of moral equivalence, expect WWII to follow not long beyond.
Eternal vigilance is not only required on the front lines or at the security counter. It is required in the archives as well. Lest we allow slanderers, pseudo-historians, and blind ideologues- of any side, mind you- to destroy our heritage, our history, and our ability to fight in the present.
What about those of us who both served in the military and are liberal? These are not mutually exclusive categories.
Hmm, were you ever in the military? Or are you just another armchair "conservative" who would cheer for war but twist your knee to avoid having to go?
2010 will be a good year for the conservative voter, 2012 will be a great and historical year for the conservative voter as I see two conservative women being elected to President and Vice President, as my favorite newsman George Putnam used to say "this too, shall pass".
Bless you Lola, quitting is not in my dictionary.
I don’t normally take the time to leave a comment, but this was especially helpful to me today. As I myself am in the midst of a loan modification, this is incredibly useful advice. Thanks!
