This is irrefutable evidence that there should be more psychiatrists roaming the woods or, maybe, squads of white-jacketed palookas with over-sized butterfly nets.
Having grown up in the West where I saw what hard lives were led by hard-working ranchers, farmers, loggers, miners, and others who wrest their livings from the land, and I saw how dependent they were on the land for their families' welfare, I find this kind of moronic posturing and insanity deeply offensive. A stereotype of this sort of abherrent humanoid jumps to mind every time I witness their lunacy or read about their eco-terrorism: City-bred having never callouosed their hands through manual labor like digging or bucking bales, spawned by "sensitive, caring parents," taught by equally clueless teachers and professors, yearning for some kind of meaning in their pampered lives, who would recoil in horror at the prospect of a hitch in the armed forces, indoctrinated into believing that, like corporations, anyone who "violates" the land cares nothing for the future of the planet, never went on a scout or 4-H campout, and whose exposure to "nature" consists mainly of driving through rural areas to national parks where they behold what the virgin continent looked like in all its majesty.
I make $40k/yr (example). The 2.5% penalty tax for not having insurance would come to $1,000, way less than insurance costs.
So starting 2013, I’m going to just pay the tax, and if I get sick, I’ll get insurance to cover it, since they can no longer deny me for pre-existing conditions.
The way I look at it, I’m basically going to be getting insurance for $1000 a year until I need to use it, at which point I’ll pay for the actual insurance for as long as I need it. As soon as I don’t need it anymore, I’m dropping it and paying the tax again.

Also note 2/3 of people who are eligible for current government programs don’t sign up until they get sick. I don’t know how they are going to enforce mandated coverage. They can only really fine you once you get sick and join.

PS: If these cretins were truly concerned about our natural resources and the forests, they would mount a massive campaign villifying and going after China and others that export to our shores, without a shred of prevention, although they lie through their teeth telling us they are taking precautions we prescribe by law, invasive species that are destroying, for example, huge swaths of our eastern deciduous forests. The Asian Longhorned Beetle and the Emerald Ash Borer are just two species – gifts from our wonderful Chinese trading partners – that will kill more trees and woodland habitat than all the logging companies have since Euro-Sapiens set foot on our shores. But noooo…that would be non-PC.

As one who has lived off the land, thank you. You get it. As someone who has been blessed by the bounty of this great land, and has lived life with more callouses on his hands, as opposed to the ones on his butt, which is a systematic symptom of Intellegencia today, I can attest to the accuracy of what you just wrote. I cannot write here exactly how I have benefitted from natural resources, for I would be burned in effigy. Let me just say that I understand grass for grazing cattle; I also understand timber, coal, oil and gas.
With that being said, I am an environmentalist first and foremost. I have always given back more than I have taken, and leave a place better than I have found it.

While working in the environmental field over the last 10 years, I can attest that there are lots and lots of advocates who approach policymaking from this vantage point. During those 10 years, I was shocked to learn how many crazies there were working to influence changes in our state laws. I'd attend legislative meetings and walk out mostly shocked by how unaware these people were as to how the real world worked. Many days I thought I was the crazy one for not seeing things threw their utopian lens. It was quite a treat. Never dull and never saw any mushrooms.
Dr. Cathy – If those crazies shocked you, then you shouldn't venture anywhere near a UN meeting on the environment. The UN HQ in NYC is infested with these radical environmental groups that have managed to wangle official UN credentials. These credentials allow them into the hallways and meeting rooms where representatives of governments draft their output, often with the crazies' position papers read into the record by third world types who know each of those positions can, in practice, be used as a veiled barrier to trade to protect their domestic industries which are often sweatshops and environmental disasters, and which are owned by the ruling elite. The "Church Center," directly across the street from the UN is a nest of gaia-worshippering NGOs dedicated to socialism.

As a Boy Scout, I was taught, and practiced a rule that we left our campsites better than we found them. We spent part of each campout looking for trash left by other campers and hauling it out with ours. We found dead, rotting trees,chopped them up, and spread the wood on our paths to avoid causing erosion. When we found good campsites on land owned by ranchers, it was an unspoken rule that Scouts were allowed to camp there without asking permission first. It was common knowledge that Scouts would do nothing to damage the land and the ranchers knew that. And Scouts now are treated like crap by the so-called intelligentsia and glitteratti. What hypocrites! I would love to see one of these pampered, sensitive souls spend a day mucking out stalls and corrals, bucking bales, and any number of other tough farm chores. I'll also bet that they don't have a clue that irrigation ditches are great places to look for wild, organic asparagus and other tasty fruits of the earth. They think they invented "organic." What a laugh!

I was discussing religion, demographics, and the abortion issue with a lib friend a couple-few years back in the context of the French carmageddon that was gong on at the time. He sited poverty as the reason. I pointed out to him that the real fuel source for the flames was intimately related to the continuing demographic collapse that was going on in EUtopia; that the unsettling increase in civil unrest and Jew-bashing we were witnessing might be related to their aging socialist-minded populations and the fact that Europeans, it seems, just aren't interested in having enough babies to maintain replacement levels. Their collective solution to this conundrum has amounted to the mass importation of young baby-making worker ants needed to maintain a cradle-to-grave welfare scheme such as they've erected. They have in essence set up a pyramid scheme of baby-production by importing a working lower-caste of baby-makers who don't share their egalitarian cultural values and it wasn't working out…Unless the intention was the actual dissolution of 'Old Europe' in the first place that is.

I have felt for quite a while that the changes we were going through and still 'progressing' were little more than a subtle plan to so dilute our cultures and our heritage that we would become indistinguishable one nation to the next. I understand why traditional french hate mc donalds. It was theri view of their 'exceptionalsim', as is/was the case with the british, italians, germans and every other member of the bland making EU. Our own traditional cultures and traditional values have been likewise under attack from those who wish for 'one world', one PC world. I decided to do something about it 6 years ago.

@ Gary – I've lived in the kinds of places you seem to romanticize as hunter/gatherer locales. Their furious search for daily food is destructive in the extreme. Most of them could give a fig for preserving 'gaia.' I did point out why they are wrong. They give the appearance of emotionally hysterical souls staging theater to show everyone how much they care, a self-absorbed display if I've ever seen one. Their crusades on behalf of us all, whether we want them out there doing their 'thing' for us, using the money they or their parents provide from well-paying city jobs to save the snail darter or some other endangered species at the expense of hard-working, honest people who depend on the land, are unwanted and unneeded. Look to the controversy now raging in California over a smelt at the expense of ag owners and their workers. If you want to see what wonderful stewards of the land Native Americans were and whether they weren't destructive, check out their buffalo-gathering technique used at Chugwater, Wyoming. That technique involved massive prairie fires and a very high cliff.
