Why We Love Sen. Coburn, Reason #325: Dr. No Threatening to Have Bill Read on Senate Floor
by Publius
From Politico:
Sen. Tom Coburn, the Oklahoma Republican who developed a close friendship with President Obama when they served together in the Senate, is threatening to have the entire health care bill read on the Senate floor.
Senior Senate Democratic aides had heard Coburn was considering having potentially thousands of pages read aloud in effort to stall passage. “If he did this it would be even outrageous for a guy who’s become known as Dr. No around here,” one of them told POLITICO.
Coburn’s office confirmed that he is indeed thinking about having the bill read.
“That’s a possibility,” Coburn spokesman John Hart said. “He wants to make sure everyone has a chance to read the bill.”
Coburn, who has a reputation for using procedural rules to block and delay legislation, has been an outspoken critic of the president’s health care overhaul. He recently told the New York Times: “My mission is to frame this health care debate in terms of the fiscal ruin of this country. … I have instructed my staff to clear my schedule for every minute that bill is on the floor.”

Makes a lot of sense. The congressmen will not read the bill on their own so give them "detention" and read it to them. Great idea!
Read the bill!! The progressives wrote it so they shouldn't mind hearing it read. KILL THE BILL!!!!!
If it's in the rules to have the bill read than by all means he should demand it. It may be the only way that most of them will ever read it
GO TOM gO!!!!!!!1!

Superb….. The lazy morons will vote it down after the first few hours out of boredom and wanting some pablum. Go Coburn! !
Thank God, for you Senator Coburn!!
The fastest way to destroy our Republic and shove us whole-hearted into Communism is to force everyone onto the Government doles. Please, don’t let this happen!
I don’t want to be part of the generation that killed the greatest experiment in human liberty this world has ever known! Our Constitution and our Republic must be strengthened and protected!
Don’t threaten, just do it.
I think we need to swamp Coburn’s office with e-mails offering many thanks and mucho encouragement. Can’t hurt….
I will donate to a fund to keep Dr. No on the Senate floor as long as needed. Though reading a convoluted bill aloud would be akin to reading aloud the ingredients of a box of cereal. You still don't understand WTH you just heard.
I suddenly feel like moving to oklahoma where I can have someone it won't make me feel sick to vote for.
Almost as good as a filibuster.

I think this is a genius idea. I doubt Pelosi would allow it to happen though, for she has the ultimate power and abuses it daily. She shuts doors, turns off lights, hears what she wants from the people of this country, insults them, etc., so it would be amazing if she allowed this to occur. I can hear it now, "Off with their heads!"
Lorben, Pelosi is in the House not the Senate, unless you know something I don't.
Go, Tom! There is no reason this bill shouldn't be read in toto on the Senate floor. There's no emergency, no pressing need (other than the Progressive's collapsing position) that requires it to be passed now. If they won't show the American people sufficient respect to post a final copy of this bill for two full weeks on the Internet, then invoke the ancient rule and read it aloud in the Senate. All 1990 pages (and counting).
Do it, Senator. Your country demands it.
Pelosi has no control over what happens in the Senate. This would be the Baucus-Whoever version.
The fools in congress don't even write the bills anymore. I guess they don't see any reason to read them either. Seriously, I could do a better job than 95% of the people in congress. I sure as hell know more about the Constitution than Pelosi. What are we paying these people for?
They have a name for the plan to destroy our way of life, it's called the Cloven-Piven Strategy. Just like Lisa said..; get as many people on welfare as possible and watch the system collapse
if you read it I will happily watch it on C-Span. Like others have said since none of them have read it yet this will be the only way they will know what is in it.
I honestly don't understand how these people can get away with signing bills with out reading them. It is their job hell it is their ONLY job to read these bills then vote on them. I know if I don't do my job I get fired.
I say FORCE them to sit through the reading of this ENTIRE bill!!! How long will it take for someone to yell 'uncle'…??

I honestly can not think of a better way to shut these arrogant fools up! I'm sure the entire leftist senate body would have their faces melted off ala Raiders of the Lost Ark.

GIVE 'EM HELL, SENATOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I live in Oklahoma and was proud to vote for him in the very first Presidential election I was able to vote in. It was the best vote I ever cast; I am so proud of the way he has, for the most part, held Congress to the same fiscal standards we should all follow.
I think Coburn's idea is great. This is perhaps one of the most important bills put forth in quite a long time that will change the United States forever. Every Senator needs to understand exactly what they are voting on. If the Senator's won't read the bill, then make them listen to it. Maybe then they'll realize how bad this health care bill really is.
I like your style, Sen. Coburn! Reminds me of Jimmy Stewart in “Mr. Smith Goes To Washington!” By all means, do it.
Some pabulum, or some coke (not the bubbly kind), or 110-proof.
Do it. I will personally come to Washington to donate money to your political campaign.
It should be read and shown on CSPAN
From what I have read this bill will absolutely kill the economy
it will require employers to pay 65% of the premium for family coverage
and if enough employees don't sign up for your health care, because they can't afford it, you can still get fined.
This bill is all about control, control and more control.
This is so un-American! Why do these people want to destroy this country?
I think along with reading it, he should use dramatization. Get some doctors and nurses, and patients, who are good actors, to play out some of the scenarios and implications. It would also help some of the Senators who apparently don’t understand English to comprehend what the Healthcare Bill is all about.
That is my representative. Dr. Coburn represents me here in Tulsa. I am always proud of him. Why can’t you other states vote for people who are half the conservative this man is? It looks to me that the rest of you are all putting Voinavichs and Snowes. I sometimes wonder if we are in the same party when I look around and see a Dede Scozzafova (sp?) even running under the Republican rubric.
READ IT……….PLEASE………….Read it slow an deliberate, pause and debate on each questionable paragragh
Great IDEA! Let's make it a fundraiser! For each page that he reads on the senate floor, I will donate a penny to the charity of his choice! (Sorry for only a penny but it is 2000 pages! and is likely to grow by much more than that!)
Always like Sen. Coburn and Inhofe, Oklahoma gets it right. Roll it up, and stick it in their ears or some other vacant orifice. If you’re in political “business” don’t make long term plans!
I like this guy ok, but Ron Paul is the original Dr. No.
I hope and pray this does not pass. To be honest I am very scared if this does pass. If this Bill does go through there are two things that may happen..1) There will be violence 2) the voters will not forget and vote these idiots out. There will be a lot of republicans and Independents voted in next year. I just hope it is the second option not the first.
If I were entering into a written contract and called my attorney to ask if I should read it first before signing, he would be astounded that I could even ask the question. He would tell me if I had to ask, don't sign. And then he have a few choice words about my competence to enter into this contract to begin with.
For all intents and purposes, we voters send these people, who BTW are a majority of lawyers, to D.C. as representatives with full power of attorney over our lives. It is unconscionable that these people would sign this contract on our behalf without having even read it and are incapabable of understanding it.
This is a gross violation of our trust. Every lawyer-representative that votes for this bill having not read it should be brought before their state bar and made to explain why they should not be disbarred.
Sen. Coburn makes it worth the move! So proud of my senator
That would prove interesting. Remember Obongo said when he got elected, he would have important lrgislation debated on C-Span?
Coburn can help Barry uphold his pledge. READ IT!
Coburn 2012
I'm not much on symbolic acts, it'll still get voted on. However, ever hour the vote can be delayed will give people a chance to speak their minds and preserve our freedoms. Proud to be an Okie today and I'd like to nominate Dr. Coburn (I'd say Senator Coburn but I want to show him more respect than that) for President of the United States of Flyover Country. Read the bill.
How dumb do the democrats think we are, its insulting to hear them tell us that Americans want this bill and its good for us. the People dont want it and what American wants the govt. forceing us to buy anything. Plus not one of them knows whats in the bill, what a debacle.
Yes, read it loud and spell out words such as S-H-A-L-L every time it's mentioned~!!
Recent Poll shows that Americans are opposed to this Health care 75%-25%. Three quarters of America is against this, yet they are going to pass it anyway. This is infuriating.
I'd say read it also, as long as Harry Reid doesn't agree and then get the world's fastest talker to read it in under 10 minutes. They would have to get someone to read it s-l-o-w-l-y so that everyone can comprehend it in all of its monstrosity.
Maybe they could skip right to the part that requires you to pay for the government "option" or go to jail.
Only the ignorant or illiterate (or dishonest) sign something they have not read. Kudos to Senator Coburn.
It should be a completely agreeable to PBO and the Democrats. After all, they ARE the self-proclaimed party of transparency.
Darn right, read it aloud. Drone your brains out. ALL final bills should be read aloud. And, make sure all of the earmarks are read aloud too.
Better yet, tie Pelosi into a chair and make her read all 2000 pages into the camera. Dedicate a C-Span channel to it. Her Botox needs a little loosening.
And, even better, waterboard her when she misses a paragraph.
Dr/Sen. Coburn- you probably won't read this, but ty from this conservative and proud American! When Conyers from MI got on Meet the Press and said- who reads the bills- I couldn't believe it! So it is very apparent, after that comment, that this bill needs to be read to all who are voting on it! Thanks again Dr. Coburn!
No from OK, but I’d elect you here, in Louisiana…
Meant not from OK, but I'd vote for you here in Louisiana!
Here folks:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gW7mOaPnYYA&fe...
Your tax dollars at work.
Hell YES read the bill on the floor. That's the only way some of them are going to read it (not that they care to). It's a great idea.
Hooray Dr. NO!
If there is anyone that disallows this from taking place, should Coburn decide to go ahead, the repercussions would be monumental. Well, if the media decides to become fair and unbiased again.
3 questions would need to be answered:
What is in that bill that you are afraid of us finding out?
Why is is so important that it cannot wait (while our troops are deemed less important. Iminent danger to lives today vs. what will go into effect in 2013.) ? (sorry for the side note
)
and WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?
What’s so outrageous about reading a bill about to be decided on the floor of the body about to vote? It sounds perfectly reasonable to me.
I suppose the tax-and-spend crowd are following the same practices of the millions of mortgagees they enabled to buy homes they could not afford who thought reading the documentation on the single biggest financial transaction most of them would ever undertake was a “pain” or an “inconvenience:” Heck! Doing that would have kept them from their twice-weekly trip to the mall to use the credit cards that they also could not afford to pay back.
This is like having a front row seat to a massive train wreck.
Sen. Coburn should be taken at his word. He has a proven history of taking solid stands and sticking with it. That's why we'll feel good when we re-elect our senator from Oklahoma. I think Congress knows by now that Coburn is not lip service, he's the real thing. And, as a medical practitioner, his interest in the bill is unquestionable. Pelosi and Reid can't believe anyone would actually want to go to the trouble of reading a bill. I mean . . . this is Congress. What up?
Sounds reasonable to me. SOMEONE has to read it.

God bless you, Sen. Coburn. By all means, read the bill in its entirety, and as you're reading it, also include commentary to connect the dots about its fundamental unconstitutionality, its Cloward-Piven Strategy ulterior motives, and the "special interests" who would benefit.
Your efforts can be the harsh light that makes the roaches scatter.
I, for one, will gleefully watch C-SPAN as you demolish the bill page by page. Go for it! We're behind you 110%!!
Read the bill
You do donate to a fund to keep Dr. No on the floor. It's called taxes. This is his job. That being said, it's a great idea.
It is IRRESPONSIBLE for any representative or senator to vote on ANY legislation they have not read or at least had their staff read and prepare detailed briefs. If they do not read the bills they vote on, then they are NOT doing their jobs and should be replaced…that is just the way it is.
I like his idea of reading this out loud!!! There is NO rush to push this through other than political reasons. There is no reason to push this through with no debate or alteration UNLESS there are things in there the originators *do not* want read.
GO GET EM!!!!

Congres man do it! read the bill and take your time! Pelosi will have a stroke and america needs to see that! Too many members of Congres are too quick to follow the leader regardless where they lead because they just too lazy or weak in their morals and principles to stand on their own or up for something. Thsi congrees man needs to be encouraged so that prehaps in the furture he will stand for other principles. Or maybe he's just looking for a bigger cut of thencampaign bribes that Pelsoi and Obama are offering to get the votes they need to pass the bill. I hope its because he has some courage and principles! wake up america! we need men and women who have a spine and stand up for pronciples no matter how much money the crooks offer to get their way!
Hear, hear!
Read the bill and televise it. Let's let everybody know exactly what's in this hulk of dead tree before making any decisions on it. What a novel concept.
If nothing else, it would encourage these blowhards to be more concise.
VinceP1974: I believe it's the "Cloward-Pivan Stratagy. While your at it look up Saul Alinsky. It's one of Obamas mentors. Cloward-Pivan Stratagy shines a lot of light on a lot of things. We are headed toward something more akin to what we see in Iran etc. We are the home of the FREE. Time to take back our freedoms.
Come on down, we'd love to have ya!
This is the first time I've heard of this man, and I like him already.
Imagine, making such a demand in this day and age: read something before voting on it!
Why does it seem like things which are painfully obvious to us "little people" are so often completely lost on those we elect into office?
Liz you are right. EVERYONE SHOULD LOOK UP CLOWARD-PIVAN STRATAGY. THIS IS NO JOKE. It will shine a light on exactly what Obama is doing. While your at it look up Saul Alinsky. One of Obamas mentors.
My bad, I was up late last night when I read it and just scanned it and didn't pay attention to the fact it was a Senator proposing this idea. Change it to Harry Reid as the Mad Hatter! Still fits!

Keep in mind that Dr. Tom faced ethics charges from the Senate because he came home on weekends and holidays to deliver babies for the poor… no charge. I think that's a good indication that he is a principled man. Wlaks it like he talks it and that's why the Democrats can't stand him. That's a badge of honor in my book.
You're right Lisa. This will destroy our country as it shreds our Constitutional Republic. If these Bolsheviks force this through there will be consequences for these pigs in Congress. We are mere weeks away from insurrection if they force this on us. Congress has NO Contstitutional authority to interfere with my families health care. We are Americans and Freedom is our birthright. The Congress scum who vote for this will feel the wrath of the Patriot soon. They won't resign so we will be forced to remove them and their kind from office.
Long live the Republic!!
Being from Ohio, I agree. Voinovich has become a poor excuse for a Republican. Since he announced that he would not be running again, he seems to vote often with the Dimwits. It seems Republicans MUST become the party of conservatives.
I'd prefer you tied her to a chair and turned on the power for her crimes against the Constitution.
Senator Coburn, Thank for your service. You sir are a Patriot.
Dr. Tom faced ethics charges for going home and delivering babies on weekends?? Yet, Charlie Rangel, Chris Dodd, Blubber Frank and other members of the CBC (corrupt as they are) still get a free pass! DISGUSTING!!
YES! Read it and read it sloooooooow!

I love this man! If we had more of the likes of him in our government we wouldn't be headed down this destructive path to socialism.

He DOES have quite a resume, don't you agree?
Like the saying goes, “There’s never time to do it right, but there’s always time to do it over.” He’s only insisting on what should have been done that QP blocked.
I sent Senator Coburn an email encouraging him to read the bill on the floor of the Senate. Isn't that one of our .representatives job duties, to read bills before they vote on them. I encourage everyone to write/call him and request that he read the bill to his peers.
This is brilliant. Congressman Coburn, if you do this you will have my great respect!
Have you heard of Downsize D.C.'s Read The Bills Act? Well, this is exactly what their bill would do, require all bills to be read before a quorum of Congress before it was passed. In addition, anyone who voted YES on a bill would be required to sign an affidavit swearing that they had tread the bill in it's entirety before voting.
Check it out here: http://www.downsizedc.org/etp/campaigns/27
I'm will you all the way Senator Coburn!!! I hope you keep your word and make them read every last word of it. They are abusing the Constitution of the United States by illegally voting on this and forcing it on the American people. Everyone in the Good Old USA knows that socialized medicine has never worked well anywhere in the world… Thank you
READ, BABY, READ!
I say force everyone of you who posts on this topic to reveal whether their health insurance is via their government employer or from the state local or federal government. There are more BSers on this topic than ever. When I ask folks face to face who share the same opinions I see here, they typically waltz a bit, look at the ground and shut their pie holes, because MOST PEOPLE IN KITSAP COUNTY have at least some govt support for their health insurance. I have had some BSers insist that their Medicare was not via the Government. Scheeeesh. And I would like to see one of you call me a communist face to face.

Yet another reason to be proud about being from Oklahoma along with the illegal immigration bill HB1804 we are doing pretty well in Oklahoma.
