I am still amazed at the brilliance of Ronald Reagan. He left a lasting legacy in his words and actions. I wish our leaders would follow his wisdom instead of ignoring it.
Ronald Reagan just understood conservatism to its core. He never had to claim he was a conservative, you just knew it by the way he expressed himself in speeches. Speaking of his speeches, it is almost scary to go back and listen to them. Reagan's words truly are timeless and apply every bit today as they did back then. That's what conservatism is, the study of that which works in society and human nature. Too many think that conservatism is a relative term. Jack Kennedy is a conservative relative to Obama, but that doesn't make Kennedy a conservative. Reagan was a conservative, and there was nothing relative about it!
A hearty congratulations to Obama on the 48 Saves tonight! While I'm certain the negative nellies will get all wee-wee'd up in the heart of silly season, the results reveal nothing more than the inherent racism of voters in Virginia and New Jersey. Let's just regroup tomorrow and get ready to roll out government healthcare. Our nation patiently awaits the next big deadline. The buck stops… oh, screw it. I'm gonna go watch ESPN.

He was a brilliant leader and it would benefit you all to go back and listen to some of his speeches and read some of his publishing's and use him as an icon, an inspiration to stop alienating yourselves from every one and any one who dares to have a difference of opinion with you. What he called "Reagan Democrats" you people label "RINOs".

Two trillion dollar deficits sure buy a lot of racism.
Contrast Obama's fiction-based beautification of the disastrous New Deal (but this time on steroids) with the Reagan Recovery of the 1980s, which brought us back from 11% unemployment plus double-digit inflation AND interest rates.
He accomplished this with an adherence to Milton Friedman's philosophy- with spending and tax cuts, in addition to deregulation and incentives for small businesses and entrepreneurs- all aided by Reagan's sunny optimism and complete faith in the American free-market-enterprise system.
Of course, this is all 180 degrees from what Obama's foisted on us-
Reagan created over 20M jobs…growing the country’s real GDP by almost 30% in the process. Those kind of results makes one wonder why Obama’s multi-trillion-dollar spending would impress ANY-body, with his pledged 3.5M new and “saved” jobs (whatever those are)… a paltry figure 16.5M jobs shy of The Gipper’s towering accomplishment. And of course, now it's become obvious that Obama's pledge can't be delivered upon anyway… unemployment is soaring, they didn't create any private-sector jobs at all!
Of course the press never asked The One any questions about this BS "pledge" or reckless economic policies. They were too busy with his lengthy puppy-vetting process and how he likes to play basketball.
The Dear Leader is taking a wrecking-ball to this society- because he has despised it his whole life. Is it our fault he's a narcissist with racial hangups and had a bad childhood… raised by far-left freaks?

One of my great disappointments is that I never got to meet Reagan.
I was a kid in the 80's but I remember his 1984 win. I remember feeling safe, and optimistic. I understood "Morning in America."
Last year the country seemed to be heading towards an optimism. Some of us had our fingers crossed that it would pan out. Alas, what a difference a year makes.
Do a Google image search of Reagan. Now, compare and contrast the suits and ties he wore to the ones Obama wears. Draw your own conclusions, but I'll take gravitas over hipster any day.

I didn't meet him, but saw him speak twice… once on a cool whistlestop tour on a vintage train car, and I got within 75 feet. He ended his stump speech with "You ain't seen nothin' yet!" And he delivered this country eight of the best years it's ever seen…

Before Reagan I would generally vote Democrat and Carter was the very last one Democrat who I voted for. The misery index for my work-craft is presently about 27%….(Electricians, Milw., WI Area). I don't usually disagree with you Cowboy, but I think this needs to be from the bottom up. Newt doesn't hold a formal party position, so I'm not sure how he can be cleaned out. Steele's position is difficult. Those county chairpeople put national in an awful position; support the local party and its not-Republican candidate or turn their back on them completely. Not saying that they handled it well, but I think the Catch-22 they were placed in isn't always appreciated. Better for people to get involved with their precinct, township, county committees. Reclaim the party from the ground up. When the foundation is solid, leadership will have no choice but to follow.

I think the lesson from Hoffman is that conservatives need to fight the mainstream media's "conservatives are scary radical" theme and actually care about what the middle thinks about talk radio and Sarah Palin. So long as the mainstream media can use Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, and Sarah Palin as bogeymen to scare independent and moderate voters away from true conservatives, we are going to have trouble getting true conservatives elected.

Could Ronald Reagan be elected today? The media in 1980 were liberally biased and hated RR but they still had some adult supervision and a shred of integrity, some senior people who had been in WW2 or Korea. I remember the miasma under Carter. To this day I despise the man. And he's the only submariner pres (I'm a submariner too, and we tend to stick together) and I wish I could revoke his Dolphins.
I remember my parents were hard-core dems but they were miserable even to a 12 year old's perspective.
My Union step-dad, and my mother jumped HARD on the Reagan bandwagon once they got to hear him speak, but they never stopped being pro-union dems. Much to their own detriment (but that is another story).
That's awesome Holly. One good thing about being young or even not around is, though you missed RR in real time, you also got to miss out on the constant anti-Reagan shrill from the press and the left. They hated him and did everything they could think of to undermine him.
People have forgotten that face coming almost weekly it seemed like to give a public adress. Reagan didn't just speak to the politicians, he spoke directly to the people & did it from the heart. He wasn't afraid, uncomfortable or undecided. He had clear vision & a goal to make America strong again & to show America was the bastion of freedom & responsibility wrapped into one. With all the dignity & grace he rose above those that called him a loon or nut job. He believed in his core values & never let them slide. That is what we as Conservatives are looking for. Nov 1979 was my first Presidential election. Ronald Wilson Reagan was the man I voted for at the unripened age of 19. Carter was a joke, bad joke. i will give Carter a thumbs up for "Habitat For Humanity" but nothing else. We dyed in the wool Conservative need to keep our chins up and backs straight. We will reclaim this precious country America, I have no doubt!

Growing up my father, a WWII navigator and fiscal conservative, taught me three main lessons.
1) Personal responsibility — People will trust you if you take responsibility for your actions. Over time, they will even begin to follow you because a true leader will admit and learn from their mistakes. Part of responsibility is taking a stand though even when it is not popular especially when principle is at stake. A leader has the responsibility to defend what is right and just. Responsibility, leadership and justice all go hand in hand.
2) Anything worth having is worth working for — In an age when so many in my upscale community buy their children cars in high school, my 17 year old son knows that he will not be given a car. Does he resent me for it… not at all. He holds down a job while being in several extracurricular activities and had his best report card ever. Why? Because he now understands intrinsically what it is to earn the accolades and to work hard for something he desires. He doesn't need or want a hand out. He knows what value is. He is armed with the knowledge that "Yes HE can."
3) Look for the good in all people — My father told me to always look first to what you like about someone. Form your opinion on where you have common ground or where you share similar values not on what divides you. He said that those that first look to what they don't like miss vital opportunities and end up turning people away and never get to share ideas to improve the overall situation.
Reagan was a man much like my father. He was a leader and made the hard decisions based on principle over popularity. He re-instilled the idea of our founders that hard work should be rewarded with the fruits of its labor. That government was only a hindrance to the goal of citizens being intrinsically motivated to achieve. He was also the kind of a man that found common ground and used that as the basis to build something more. Like my father, he was a man that I trusted and that is something I have not been able to say about a President since.
The last decade and a half we have let the political parties force a wedge between people based on their differences. I am thrilled to see that people are starting to re-unite based on their similarities again. My father and President Reagan both would join me in having real "hope" because things are about to "change" back to how it was when I was growing up. People are waking up to what the real problems are and the movement to take back our Republic is growing bigger everyday.
