Hoffman Concedes NY-23 Race
by PubliusFrom the Associated Press:

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) – Democrat Bill Owens has captured the special election for a New York congressional seat that became a fight over the identity of the Republican Party.
Owens defeated Conservative Doug Hoffman and Republican Dierdre Scozzafava (skoh-zuh-FAH’-vuh) in the heavily Republican 23rd congressional District in rural northern New York. Scozzafava abruptly withdrew Saturday and supported Owens.
Hoffman has conceded the race.
With 88 percent of the precincts reporting, Owens had 49 percent of the vote to 46 percent for Hoffman. Scozzafava had 6 percent.
The race has been getting national attention, with some calling it a referendum on President Barack Obama and others saying it could help Republicans focus their message to attract more people to the party.

"Paging Mr. Gingrich! Paging Mr. Gingrich! Please come to the podium Mr. Gingrich!"
GD!!! Hoffman would have won!!! GD!!! GD!!! GD!!!!
Down Goes Hoffman
Down Goes Beck
Down Goes Palin
One year ago the democrats made history by electing Obama and they make history again by regaining seat lost to them since the civil war.
New York seems determined to remain a depressed economic state. They love their liberal pols and keep bringing them back. Upstate NY is a disaster. Let em have one more socialist pig.
The democrats are making much bigger history by destroying our economy and our liberty. Their dirty tricks will get them in the end. Bad Karma begets bad Karma.
And losing two governor's races in states that strongly supported Obama one year ago. Or did you miss that little bit of news.
And the "IT'S ALL ACORN's FAULT!!!" thumb-sucking tantrum begins in 5…4…3…2…1…
Sorry, Mr. Gingrich has left his principles. Oops, I mean his party. Oops, I mean the building.
Bob,
you're an ass.
And how many dead people voted? And where was ACORN in all of this? Just asking.

cue the loonies!
The only close election that has an implication on the federal level, and the GOP didn't win. Our nation is fed up with Republicans!
So what?
My state of California has a Republican governor- doesn't mean that we would ever send a Republican to the White House.
Bob
Dede still took 6% of the vote. Add that to Hoffman's and the GOP would have won.
The fact is that most of the GOP voters in NY23 rejected liberal republicanism.
Dems got thrashed in the other races.
Keep on dreamin' Bob.
OMG…NAILED IT!!! ACORN Derangement Syndrome is more predictable than freakin' daylight!
…and the party just left NY-23! C-YA!!!!
Umm…you've heard of Ronald Reagan right?
This blog is so full of hatred, no wonder our country is fed up with Republicans and their wars.
Yep, proves one thing. Liberalism IS a mental disorder.
Umm… did Reagan, whom I love btw, invade a country illegally?
Who gives a crap about Governor's races? Sarah Palin quit her job as a Governor and according to the tea-baggers, it wasn't a big deal. Glenn Beck didn;t care about the Governor's races but he certainly did care about the House races in which Dems won!
On behalf of the New York Democratic Party, thank you so much! We couldn't have done it without you…LITERALLY!!!
What a shame. He should have held in there and waited for the final counts.
Not really. You know what IS mental disorder though? Not realizing what the GOP has become- a war-mongering, profit-driven party.
I was not a supporter of Dede the democrat and she is probably dancing in the streets like the fat toothless palestinian women on 911 upon hearing that Hoffman lost but I say all the more reason that she should NOT be representing the GOP. Let the democreeps win by any means the GOP will be better off in the long run.
I blame Bush for VA and NJ.
The GOP now have no choice but to find away to take back their party from the right-wing whack jobs and give a platform back to the REAL Conservatives and Republicans. And they better hurry it up before 2010 or these tea-baggers who enjoy snatching defeat from the jaws of victory will be handing more seats over to the Democrats. These tea-baggers are more effective for Liberals than a 1000 George Soros'. The NY-23 seat was an easy, no-brainer victory for Republicans only 4 weeks ago and this is how much damamge they have done in just 4 short weeks. Time to call a "political exterminator" to rid the party of the cockroaches.
Obviously your not paying attention.
Hey Bob, how come I don't see you and your merry little co-horts on the threads announcing the winners in NJ and VA. Your silence is the same as the silence from the WH. They don't want to make a statement about the results there yet. I guess theres too much crying because of all the times wasted stumping for the LOSERS.
"we'll be back"
48,000 votes and Hoffman fought the NRCC and DNCC …… to lose buy a "Dede" hair is not a bad day for a one year seat
~Death or Glory
Why don't you take your negative FLOODING of this forum elsewhere? I think you have made your point.
Hey dummy, you already posted this. Grow up or buzz off.
The only reason Bill one is because of the liberal Scozzafava who took votes away. If it wasn't for her Hoffman would have one.
Considering that I am only interested in what the Congress will look like next year, I personally don't give a damn about any races for governor.
Well lookie hear a concerned troll.
Don't wanna talk about NJ and Va that went to President Wee Weed in 2008.
Are you retarded? [rhetorical question]
No, you?
This is just the begining.
Hoffman is what had been wrong with our country between 2001 and 2008. If I lived in NY, I would've voted for the True Conservative: Dede S, and not the freedom-hating Taliban.
Well…Bush did cause the Republicans to lose those positions. But Republicans put up Moderate candidates that people like and support and *VOILA*, Republicans win the positions back! Are ya seeing the big picture here or is this too deep for ya?
Given her credentials and record, and her support for the donkey once she dropped, I think she was a donkey plant. That little gang of precinctmen should be ousted.
Teabagging? stop the homophobic self hate. Now if you want to discuss the tea parties and not your favorite activity, go ahead..
Yeah…there was a glitch. Sorry about that. Must have been ACORN's fault. LMAO!!!!
That makes no sense. She took votes from the Dem, not from Right Wing Crazy Doug.
Here's the point for you…keep your "negative candidates" out of our backyards!
Who care if another dumbass liberal became a congressman for new york… the point is RINOS are dead weight and republicans will stand on principle. No longer are republicans "playing nice". We actually are different than democrats and we have just as much right as democrats to have people represent us who actually support our values. This was a big win for the party and the country.
There is no way in hell this sticks to Palin in a bad way. All Palin did was scare the crap out of the RINOS. No point in having republicans in office if they are going to vote lock-step with the democrats.
That used to be acceptable… but no more!
Are governor races important now? When Palin quit her job as governor and abandoned her commitment to her supporters and voters, y'all said it was "no big deal" and praised here as being all sorts of "mavericky". NOW, governor races are important to you?
The beginning of what? The only certified teabagger in the bunch lost. In a district that hadn't elected a Democrat since the beginning of time.
1. It was a very close race with Hoffman running as a Conservative.
2. We won NJ.
3. We did a clean sweep in Virginia winning EVERY major seat. A year ago Obama won that state. Today he lost it big time.
4. Stop drinking the kool aid. Sugar rots your brain.
5. Sarah Palin has a best selling book. It hasn't even been released yet.
6. Glen Beck and Fox News has more viewers than CNN, HLN and MSNBC combined. Even at 3 in the morning.
Spin it all you want but the country has sent a HUGE message to your messiah.
"The GOP now have no choice but to find away to take back their party from the right-wing whack jobs and give a platform back to the REAL Conservatives and Republicans."
What a total failure to understand what is going on in this country. You need to get off the Oberman and come back to the real world.
Is reality just a deep buzz way down deep in your skull?
Yoo hoo, Dede, the Republicans would like a word with you about throwing the election to the Democrat…
Your state has a RINO who is married to a Democrat Kennedy.
Actually, the "tea-bagging" label in reference to you came from Fox News. The nerdy looking guy with glasses who likes to stalk people and was caught on tape along with a producer at the 9/12 rally inciting excitement for the "fair and balanced" news cast was the one who coined that phrase in reference to the tea party protesters. Naturally…well…you can't let a gift like that go. Sure beats the whole "liberal moonbat" thing.
The trolls are feeling their Prozac tonight, bright eyed and bushy tailed and fulla schiess. S'awright, though Hoffman should have waited. We got two out of three, and they weren't "moderates" i.e. democrats lite. Thanks for running, Doug. Don't be afraid to do it again.
Um, is every republican Bush? Bush wasn't a conservative or a republican, he was a pawn of interests of which are too complicated for this blog.
If by "the country", you mean roughly 10% of NJ and VA residents, then yes.
A guy with no personality that just entered the race put a big scare in the Dems and missed by 3 points. Maybe if the POTUS would had stumped for his opponent he would have won by 20 points.
not a good loss. no way to spin it. great wins in NJ and VA but this is the one everyone here was looking at. tough loss for conservatives. it is a heavy republican district. something is not right when a democrat is voted in. tough loss. we do not need liberal dems but voters also do not want to feel like they are being preached to by Beck and Palin. there was too much gloating. upstate NY are good and decent people. they felt like pawns and they rejected it. in a way, good for them.
In all the races, Hoffman was my favorite candidate, with Harmer in Cali coming in around 2nd place. It's not over for Mr. Hoffman though, I think if the GOP backs him in the normal elections he will pick the seat up from this mindless democrat vote represented by Owens.
Oh and Michael Steele and other republican moderates — don't think you're off the hook for these shenanigans. You backed Scuzzafava, who clearly is a RINO. Let me ask you something Mr. Steele — what do you stand for? What do you believe in? Are you merely a hapless and dimwitted political strategest, or do you believe in the founders and the constitution? If you believed in the constitution, you wouldn't have backed Scuzzyfava. So clearly you have no core beliefs. Step aside. Resign. GO AWAY!! CAN'T YOU SEE YOU LET A GOOD MAN DOWN?! Mr. Steele, conservatives around the country would breathe a sigh of relief if you would just go away.
McDonald? Moderate? Not the way I heard it, from him or from the Dems in the Old Dominion…
No sense being discouraged by Hoffman's loss. I admire his effort, but he wasn't very dynamic so likely lost the votes of the People magazine crowd in the Republican party. My takeaway from this election is the conservatives have woken up. Republican moderates and liberals likely supported Scozzafava or sat home in bitterness giving the election to Owens.
So what? Without moderates and liberals on board, conservatives lose by a few points, but as Republicans learned in 2008, when conservatives check out, the Republican moderates and liberal suffer huge losses. I sat out the 2008 Presidential election because of McCain, and I'll sit out every election without a conservative on the ballot from now on. Let's see who blinks first. If Republicans continue to assist Democrats in flushing this country down the toilet, they'll do so without my help or my vote.
uh, no, it was "look at me my hair is white" Cooper at CNN.
A lot of brain dead people voted … the overwhelming majority for Doug.
In any case, an important message has been sent.
Hoffman would have won if he had been picked in the first place.
So much for the local Republican leadership picking an "electable" "moderate" candidate instead…
???
no, SEIU's.
It's a pathetic showing when you consider that the district hadn't elected a Democrat since two centuries back.
Palin stepped aside with another conservative filling her slot. Unlike the governorships of New Jersey and Virginia which lurched far to the right with the reluctant departure of the leftist incumbent party.
You can tell the libs are nervous when they look to give "helpful" advice to the sane Americans. Sure, we're all ears. Tell us what we should do now.
CorporalO…
social conservatism in no way is in the constitution… if we want to talk card check and what not, that is fine, but major "social" issues are not defined in our great document. also, there are 3 branches to government and the constitution grants the judicial a certain amount of power… therefore, Roe v. Wade, for the time being is Constitutional. If we want to debate some of the RINOs ideas about "social conservatism" leave the constitution out of it or go back and read it.
Sarah did not drop out of a race. In fact her lieutenant stepped in and will likely win re-election.
He probably meant the freedom-hating Taliban Hoffman.
See what happens when your party is run by a bunch of "Wack" jobs….like palin, beck, looneybaugh. Be prepared for more loses in2010!!!! It's "We the people" not "They the corporations"!!!!!
You lost Jersey, the bluest of blue states. Even ACORN, Unions, gangbanging thugs, and Barry not only going there THREE times and spending ALL of Sunday stomping for corrupt Corzinze could keep Jersey blue !
And you lost Virginia, which according to Barry wouldn't ever go red again.
Ummmmmmmmmmm…..Grenada ring a bell ?
Dede tossed her vote to the democrate. Enough said.
You do realize that the republican dropped out because people saw she was actually a Dem in disguise. And if Hoffman had half a personality he would have won by a landslide. I can't wait for 2010 when Dems will be crying in their cereal the next morning wondering what happened.
Getting rid of Taliban begins at home! Get freedom-hating GOPhers our of the United States!!!
We're not exactly for the corparations you dope, if you haven't noticed it's not conservatives handing out the bailouts.
Actually you did it with the help of the idiots in the RNC, Newt, and the GOP pols who stupidly picked Suzzyfuzzy in the first place.
Not bad for a 3rd party candidate that did not get support till the last 3 weeks. Anything over 35% was a good show. This seat is back in play in a year. This sent a message to the RINO's that they better not forget.
Well, Democrats are better than freedom-hating Taliban, that's for sure.
"Tell us what we should do now.
" — ummmm….stop handing seats over to the Democrats? It's a start.
go back to your socialist slave owners.
The absentee ballots were sent in before Scuzzyfuzzy withdrew. I bet they would have made a big difference.
You can try to spin what happened tonight, but it isn't going to work.
Actually it is…but its a socialistic view…sorry repukes but it not in your favor…"Promote the general Welfare"…"Provide for the common defence", secure the "Blessing of Liberty to ourselves"…dang..all socialist views….notice it does not mention the corporate whores that your party supports!!!! Its based on "WE THE PEOPLE" which means that corporations should be supporting and bettering the middle class through HIGHER taxes…"WE THE PEOPLE" not the 1% superrich and corporate politicians !!!!
bryan…I'm considered the troll here but you're 100% right! When you have part of Hoffman's entourage labeling our issues and subsequently us "parochial", you're not going to win over enough votes to win the election. That was an insult to us.
And Owens is not a liberal Dem. He's a moderate.
the lesson from this is that there must be a middle road… in a very heavy republican district a democrat won over a conservative. this does not mean we need to sacrifice conservative values but there needs to be something in between Limbaugh, Beck, Palin and moderates like Scarborough, Gingrich etc. Reagan had very strong beliefs but he never said "you can not be part of my party if you disagree on an issue or two"… I am not advocating Scoffazza (sp?) type candidates but something between her and Hoffman without the knowitallism of Beck and Palin would do this party good on a national level… AGAIN, a heavy Republican district just went to a democrat when the entire conservative stage was set on NY23… they voted against it and you can bet we will see more of the same if it stays this way in '10 (though we will pick up seats) and '12 (which is lost if we do not look honestly at how Reagan campaigned and governed)
He was not talking about Conservatives, but about the GOP.
As much as I wanted Hoffman to win, I'd much rather have the win in Jersey; it sends a much louder message.
The Dems were dancing in the streets, a year ago, claiming that Virginia would never be a red state ever again. How very wrong they were!
Jersey is not only one of the very bluest of blue states, but the voter fraud and corruption there are what legends are made from.
To have the GOP sweep through both iof these states, tonight, should be a really big wake-up call to the Dems; Obama is NOT someone who can help you win an election nor a re-election !
And next year, Owens will lose that seat; mark my words !
I can't find corporate backed K-street lobbyists and their astro-turf fronts like Freedomworks and the Club For Growth in the Constitution. I looked! I can't find them!
Uh guess what…IT WAS BUSH STUPID!!!!!!! HAHAHAHA The economy is coming around and Obama has only been in a short time….HAHAHAHA..Dems are making history by destroying your party!!!!!! HAHAHAHA…and your right YOUR dirty tricks and lies will get you in the "END"….HAHAHAHA "We the people" are taking control again!!!!! HAHAHAHA!!!!!!
And the Democrats hope you keep up the good work and keep sending those "messages".
You, as a liberal, do not know what he was talking about and thus, as a liberal, should go to bed savoring the fact that the health care bill is now effectively defunct.
NY 23 ia gonna get what they deserve! Too bad that the rest of the freaking country has to live with it too. Doug will win next year in the regular election.
Instead of worrying about real issues affecting this country (like jobs, the economy, troops at war, etc.) the White House decided to spend the evening blogging on Big Government. Keep it coming liberals, we've only just begun.
ENOUGH with the positive spin! we were gloating that this seat was ours… go back and look at anything Rove or BEck or Palin said… THEY WERE WRONG! in a Republican district the people chose a liberal over a conservative. how is this good for the Republican party? i don't care that is was a third party… a conservative lost to a liberal in an extremely traditional Republican district. reevaluation is needed… there is common ground.. not in the Scoffazza sense but between her and Hoffman without all the noise from Beck and Palin. the average person (republican or democrat or independent) does not like them and does not want to be told they are doing what they are told. How is this not obvious? how can we spin this positive? what is wrong with you people?
Owens has 1 year in which to dutifully toe the Pelosi line as blowback for this. Then he should be toast, and NY 23 should be Republican for another century or so after the party leaders screwed up by backing Dede.
That's because republicans are trying to stick their balls over everyone eyes…thats why they use that term…so we wont see that they are corrupt and out of touch with "We the people"…..it does not say "They the corporations"!!!!! Get a clue and read the constitution!!!! It's based on a socialistic view….HAHAHAHA
