Exclusive: New Poll Finds 59% of Likely Voters Say Nation Is on the Wrong Track
by PubliusAs voters in several states go to the polls today, a new Fabrizio McLaughlin national poll of likely voters finds treacherous ground for incumbents. 59% of voters feel the nation has “gotten off on the wrong track.” (Only 31% felt the country was heading in the right direction.) The GOP leads the generic ballot test for both House and Senate by seven points (42-35 in both) Republicans in Congress, though, have slightly lower approval ratings than Democrats. The findings show more a shift away from Democrats than a move towards the GOP.
When asked to name their top issue, 50% of likely voters names the economy or employment/jobs. Health care was the top issue for 27% while 13% listed government spending and deficits.
Likely voters split on both their personal opinion of President Obama and his job performance. 41% of likely voters had a favorable opinion of President Obama and the same number had an unfavorable opinion. 48% approved of his job performance and the same number disapproved. 38% approved the job Democrats were doing in Congress (57% disapproved) while only 33% approved of the job Republicans were doing in Congress (58% disapproved).
The poll also finds very strong headwinds for the health care reform legislation currently under consideration. The poll asked the following question, which was recently tested by the Washington Post:
Would you favor or oppose having the government create a new health insurance plan to compete with private health insurance plans?
Total Favor: 45%
Total Oppose: 48%
The poll then asked:
Based on what you know, do you favor or oppose President Obama’s health care reform plan?
Total Favor: 39%
Total Oppose: 51%
The poll was conducted by Fabrizio, McLaughlin and Associates. It was conducted October 27-29 of 1,000 voters who said they were likely to vote in 2010.
The poll asked many more questions on the health reform proposals. Check back later today for those results. Also, the poll added an oversample of 400 likely voters in BOTH the 13 Senate and 47 House races ranked most competitive by the Cook Report. Results in those are interesting. Check back for those and the full top-line results as well.

I hope these numbers are real. Incumbents beware! If this is another sign of the conservative ascendancy, Doug Hoffman will win, Corzine will lose, and other RINO's will be out of office soon — replaced with real conservatives! Can it be a dream? Perhaps, but let me say then that I HAVE A DREAM!

The American people may be on the right once more, conservatism may be on the ascendancy, but if we can't wrest control of the republican party from the moderates like McCain and Lindsay Graham and face it, Newt Gingrich, we won't make a dent.. Then when conservatives do get elected and in power, will they really take on the structures in government that need to be tackled? Will they do away with massiveentitlements and the welfare state? The worse things get, and they shall, the worse Obama screws up, and he will, the more awake and angry the populace will become. And this is happening at a rather fast pace; far faster than ever before. It's something that the lefties didn't imagine would happen, but that's because they're all egomanical and believe that the rest of us are stupid. And why shouldn't they have believed that? After all, Obama was elected.
But many people who voted for Obama because they were sick of Bush and/or wanted to be part of the group that put a black guy ( he's really a mulatto ) in the White House to meake themselves feel good about how "enlightened" they are. Now, all of that "history" and "enlightenment" don't matter all that much, because of the state of the economy, their own pocketbook and investments, and because it has suddenly dawned on them that this is not what they wanted……………an inept, dithering, MARXIST doing and not doing things they are appalled by.

I take deference to the "likely voters" description. Every where you turn people chose to say that the "majority of Americans voted for Obama" without acknowledging that it was simply the majority of those WHO VOTED, voted for him. The turnout was 56.8 percent of the "voting age" population and just over half of them voted for Obama. That means 28.4 percent of the voting age population voted for Obama. Hardly what can be considered the majority of Americans. Obama is not what the majority of Americans wanted. Let's hope the real majority comes out to vote in future elections rather than ignore their responsibility as free citizens of a democratic republic.

Yes but even the Conservatives admit the DailyKos poll can be at times accurate like for example, when they had Hoffman ahead by 3 points yesterday. Nobody complained about the DailyKos poll then now did they. That poll was featured on many Conservative blogs.
The point I'm making is that polls should be non-partisan to be taken seriously. People love the polls when they're ahead and then whine they're "Liberal/Conservative" when they're not ahead.

Liberals fear 2010 much more than 2012. America is and has always been right of center. Liberal progressives are just more vocal, not more powerful. Voters will move us back toward reality next fall.
Here's is the question that is incredibly hard for Republicans and conservatives alike to answer. What is the economic plan to create more jobs in the US? Simple question that cannot be answered with a national tax policy. Businesses operate from the perspective of demand. Every business in America could have a 0 tax rate but if it doesn't have demand, then a 0 tax rate is meaningless. Its the old adage of nothing from nothing leaves nothing. Now if the job market is still tight and millions remain out of work that would like to consume, that means it is harder for people to become or stay prosperous. Any salesman can tell you their chances of making a sale and increasing revenue occurs when they have 100 potential buyers versus 15 potential buyers. Now what was that plan conservatives have to stimulate job creation?

If no one has figured it out yet, for everyone one million workers that are not working and they had just one dollar to spend, that would equal 1 million dollars. So what is the economic advantage of having less workers working? Wall street hasn't explained to Main Street that their game of reducing costs in the short term really shrinks the consumíng market, the world's largest consuming market for that matter, into a smaller less viable consumer market for the long term. Good luck in convincing Europe, South Americ and Asia to develop the consumer appetite that Americans already have. Looks like less wealth development is the trend for the future.
It sounds as if you are a supporter of the Keynesian economic theory. Is this the theory you are standing behind to "put millions of Americans back into business . . . ."
We have the power of the purse strings! The answer at this time is nonviolent resistance. What if everyone who worked for themselves refused to pay their quarterly taxes next April and every one who works for another person or company changed their exemptions to prevent any further money from being withheld from their pay check right now and refused to pay in April? Let them try to put half the country in prison at the same time!

Too bad you signed up anonymously, but let me answer your question because I'm glad you asked Often we are focused on "stopping this bill" and take the alternative for granted. You already assume that lower taxes are not the answer, which is a fine opinion on its face. To back up your opinion you state that businesses operate from a perspective of demand and that we have 0 demand in our economy. Sir, these assertions are VERY flawed. They are also typical of the left and so in responding I hope to cure some of the wrong headedness out there.
Businesses operate in order to make profit, not to address demand. A salesman's job is to create demand where once there was none. This is how new products are sold, like typewriters and high power vacuum cleaners. But the business will not operate without PROFIT. Profitability is what allows business to create new jobs, and what motivates small businesses to form and entrepeneurs to take risks. Taxes directly REDUCE profit. Therefore taxes kill jobs. Conversely, reducing taxes creates jobs except in the left's miserable world view.
Look Darryl, taxing people more in order to create jobs has not worked, as evidenced by this past year's profligate spending and hemorrhaging of jobs in the private sector. Unemployment is up. Your argument rings hollow in the face of historical evidence. The government seeks arbitrary control over private industries. Who will risk their capital in an environment where profit is under assault and their right to run their business without government regulation is nonexistent? Who wants to subject their capital to massive tax levies where the chances of making a profit are that much slimmer? Nobody!
