Tuesday Open Thread: A Time For Choosing
by PubliusToday, in 1964, Ronald Reagan’s “A Time For Choosing” speech in support of Presidential candidate Barry Goldwater was broadcast on the nation’s airwaves. Just 16 years later, Reagan righted our listing ship. Enjoy…

How I miss this man's simle explanations of complex matters!
How I wish there were true republicans running for office that ARE like him today!
Somewhere, out there in the mist, is someone waiting to step forward into the breach. History tends to repeat itself; just as Jimmy Carter paved the way for Ronald Reagan, Barrack Hussein Obama, the current one term President is preparing the way for the next Ronald Reagan to step forward. Until such time as he, or she appears, we wait………………..
How utterly refreshing to see this great man speaking the truth about America. And the irony of it is that he is from that cesspool (before it became a cesspool with Boxer, Pelosi et. al.) of leftist imbeciles he warned us about YEARS EARLIER ! California….
Kinda makes your day…. with a smile !
Speaking of Ronald Reagan, here is a real good article, on heros and patriotism.

Striking comparison ! Look and listen to this superb historical figure. Then look at the disgusting excuse we have for a president. Reagan warned us….
Comparison? There is none. It would be akin to comapring Secretariat to a wheelbarrow full of horse poop. The current squatter in the White House, makes one want to barf…………
Ronald Reagan will be missed. I enjoyed seeing one of the greatest Presidents of our Country once again. We need someone like him now. With the rate we're going under with Obama, we'll probably need at least two Reagans to get us out of the mess we're in.
"what we know in our hearts is morally right"
What a quaint notion! Especially when so many Republicans are still smarting from the "moral majority" label they were smacked with. They were made ashamed of their faith, their morals, their reasoning all because their "esteemed opponents" called them names. They tried to change it to, "compassionate conservatives" and wound up being neither.
The sneers of their peers still ring in their ears.
Huh. I'm speaking of Republicans as "they" now. I guess that means I no longer consider myself one.
Free at last!
.
So the public option is back on the table – I wonder how Snowe feel? Was she duped or did she dup us? I will send her and eamil today askig her that question…. I'm going witht the latter of the two….
So if I'm a state that opts out do I, THE STATE, have to pay in???
Good Morning Everyone

The tide is turning, Cowboy… Can't you feel it ?? Congress is in desperation mode, evidenced by their "recylcling" of the insurance fiasco. Obama is clueless as commander-in-chief. People are very antsy..
And the MSM will soon have a major defector… MSM shareholders will only suffer fools for so long…. Breaking point straight ahead !
Pssst ! ObamaShame ? Just letting you know that the military is keenly aware of that ever-widening YELLOW STREAK down your back.

He's (She's) out there. That man may be you too, DeadMan. We are waking up and we understand what history has to teach us. We will not succumb to tyranny. Find your voice and keep reading sites like Big Gov.
God bless Breibart for this forum.
The clear evidence of a politically CONSERVATIVE uprising became very conspicuous this past week. Simply review the NY23rd issue and the subsequent endorsements BY conservatives.. No longer will the country club statist Republicans call the shots. This is historical in its implication. The "WE THE PEOPLE" set are starting to take over.
Bye, Newt !
Gee folks – where’s his teleprompter? Hmm…, see any other differences between the Gipper and current day mealy-mouthed political hacks?
How’s that “last best hope for mankind” workin’ out for ya?
Barney Frank: "We are trying on every front to increase the role of government" (yes folks, on EVERY front).
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2009/10/26...
From you lips (keyboard) to God's ears
Reagan was first a conservative, not a republican. I was once a democrat, and BHO made me realize that these words are labels without value. I know now that I am not a republican but I am conservative. I know, thanks again to BHO, that I love this country 10 folds more than I thought I did. I know that I love the freedom we have so far enjoyed compared to Europe, and the rest of the world, and I don't want to see it destroyed.
You say you are free at last I hope it means you no longer will follow a party blindly.
WE want to be free, let's stop the partisan nonsense. DO what is right, get rid of politicians that are corrupt from one side or the other.
I sure hope you are right my firend, I hope you are right. That will bring US to the next crisis, a Constitutional Crisis: how to dislodge this buffoon, this squatter, this imposter and interloper from the White House. We all know that once folks move into Government Housing, the process to dislocate them can sometimes be ugly, and they usually leave the premises in a shambles…………
I agree.
Newt needs to join Jimmah carter on St. Helena, and take Lindsey graham, John McCain and Olympia Snow-job with them. They are done. The only diference between Newt and Jessie Jackson, is shade. They are both whores. Newt never did speak for me. He no longer speaks for the party………….
Barney Fwank?
That statement from a man who knows NOTHING about anything. An idealogue, and purely partisan political hack, pontificating and lecturing on how things should be run. I'd like five minutes with Barney. I'd slap him so hard I'd knock the whisp white outta his mouf………….
What a POS!
Yep. Never did follow a party blindly. In fact, I was one of the first to call the Time of Death on the Republican Party. <a href="http://primordialslack.blogspot.com/search?q=it%27s+dead%2C+jim">And the death of the Conservative movement.
I was right about the first, and hope I'm wrong about the second. And even if the idea of Conservatism is on the ropes, the Ideal of Conservative values is still worth upholding and fighting for to the last spark of light.
At some point the American will wake up and see the current regime for what it is. A cradle to grave welfare state, special interest politics and redristribution of the nations wealth to foriegn concerns. I long for the Regan days!!
President Reagan personified everything that was right and good for America. Strong work ethic, morals, self reliance and the ability to provide for onself. President Reagan also had a strong belief system, belief in himself, belief in his decisions [right or wrong he accepted resposnsibility], most of all though, he believed in the American people.
The time is upon "us" to stand up and reclaim the greatness of this country. America first, always and last. "WE" are the ones that the ability to rebuild, restructure and provide an endearing future for our children. Will the next President Reagan please stand up?
Respectfully,

Not his spine, 1DeadMan…
His heart…
RightSide is absolutely correct, Cowboy…the sea change IS under way…
If Hoffman pulls it off in NY-23, (and some polls are beginning to show that), the GOP will get the message loud and clear, whether the phone rings or not…
Palin and Coulter for 2012!
(Yeah, I can dream…)
God, I miss voting for that man…
Are we doomed to listen to videos of past greatness? Can someone give me hope?
I was fortunate to turn 18 three months before the 1980 election so Ronald Reagan was the first and unfortunately last president that I was truly proud to vote for. I am tired of presidents making decisions based on special interests or finger-to-the-wind policies. Please tell me that there is a potential candidate in our generation that shares our belief in freedom as did our forefathers, our pride in our country and its accomplishments but that demonstrates the mettle to make tough decisions like Reagan did. I am still waiting to find that person.
Why is Reagan so unique nowadays?
He BELIEVED what he said.
You KNEW he believed in America. The Presidency wasn't a calling, it was DUTY to the Citizenry of the USA…and he would've rather been sent to Hell rather than fail in that duty…
He got up in the morning Believing in America, and he went to bed Believing in it…he Believed that even if he made a mistake, the America he Believed in would help make it right…
I have noticed how many people get into that office, and come out physically changed by it…Carter was burned up by it…both Bushes looked a bit worse for wear, Clinton appeared ragged around the corners, but RWR didn't appear all that different than when he went in…
He Believed in you and me. He BELIEVED in US…(read that either us, or the US of A, either way is the same)…
Look at the politicians of today. Watch their eyes, and you'll see the difference. Those who BELIEVE in the Citizenry, and those who work the crowd for themselves. Newt had it once, but he was so beat down by the Media, so vilified, he lost sight of the "shining city on a hill…". Now, he shills for Conservatism Lite, rather than smash-mouth, in your face, belief in the Citizens freedom and liberty conservatism…
Obama, Frank, Waxman, Boxer, Pelosi, Reid, Snowe, Specter, Collins, the whole bunch…their eyes tell the story, right in front of you. They all dart around, looking for the someone they may have offended, or glare with indignation when you dare to question their motives…there's no belief there, no "heart", just an on-going calculation; a focus grouped, poll-driven calculation…"what can I say or do that keeps me here?"
There's no trust. In you. In the Country. In faith. NONE!
Hire and fire politicians until you see eyes like Reagan's. Ones that trust you, and nothing else…
I wish I was old enough to do so, but my first vote was for his poorly selected VP. Well, probably not poorly selected as "forced upon" choice.
What a great speech from a man who loves his country.Anytime Gingrich and the republicans question why conservatives are backing Hofman and not the liberal Scozzafava they just need to got to this speech. How really far this country has fallen since the days of Reagan.Congress is a sewar,Obama's a joke and the republicans are milling around like a bunch of doddering old fools.
Reagan was young in political years when he gave this speech but you could tell how much he loved this country everytime he opened his mouth and he always tried to do what he thought was right for the people of this country. The two people I see who are in similar situations in this country today are Sara Palin and Michelle Bachman.
Much to my shame and embarrassment, I voted for Dhimmi Carter.. I would like to thank Dhimmi….for opening my eyes and introducing me to a real American, Ronald Wilson Reagan. No one since has articulated or personified American exceptionalism quite like this great man.
BREAKING NEWS ! Virginia landslide CONSERVATIVE McDonnell over Deeds by FIFTEEN POINTS going into the home stretch ! It's all but over for the LIBS in this state. Let's get to work on Christie too !
To quote a certain incompetent we all sadly know about.. "We are days away from fundamentally transforming this country"… Who would have thought he was predicting a CONSERVATIVE backlash in the first year of his (holding nose) presidency ? The storm has started, fellow conservatives, we need to power up the wave soon to smack them out of political influence. KUDOS to VIRGINIA VOTERS ! We Love ya !
I said it before, and I'll say it again, I've never missed Reagan more than I do now.
They say 0bama is a great orator, but he's only a great teleprompter reader. Not only did Reagan have no need for a teleprompter, his words had substance; unlike the empty words and platitudes spewed by 0bama.
Man I miss him.
Boy….do I miss President Reagan.
Grab all tthe 'pretenders' who try to pull the Reagan Rightous Sword from its stone, and pack them off to the Reagan Re-Education Camp. Lock them inside where all they can read are wrtings of and about Reagan, and George Washington, and other select Founders; and where all they can view are Reagan Press Conferences and Speeches notably his position of the Air Traffic Conrollers, Reikievic Walkout and the Point Du Hoc address.
Maybe the 'pretenders' will 'get it' . If they don't, get rid of them.
Mjolnir,
I don't think you quite realize what you just wrote. You ought go back and re-read it several times. I wish everyone here would read what you wrote. It is quite eloquent, and comes from the heart. The best things do.
You are correct when you say there is no "heart" in the current crop of politicos. Further, there is no soul. Reagan had both. Further and beyond, you are right about Reagans eyes; they told the truth. I'd bet he got up every morning, with the outlook that each new morning was gonna be just like Christmas morning; a new day, a new adventure. A chance to perform his duty, to do something positive for his Country. He was a positive man, a builder. The current crop are not builders, they are destroyers.
The eyes never lie, they tell the truth; they are a reflection of a measure of a man, or woman. The eyes are the window to the soul. Watch Sarah Palin's eyes; watch Michelle Bachman's eyes. They tell everything.
Since this is an open thread here goes…
Eight more US soldiers killed in Afghanistan today.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20091027/ap_on_re_as/a...
Barry & Bush & the lot are responsible for this. Nobody in Washington seems to know what the hell they are doing. What did Barry say? The focus is now on protecting the Afghan civilians? Here is a hint. I don't care one damn bit about the Afghan civilians. If these cave-men can't protect themselves from these thugs it's not my fault. The US military exists to protect US civilians. Not cave dwellers in Afghanistan.
When US helicopter pilot Michael Durant was captured in Somalia Bill Clinton dispatched Robert Oakley to negotiate for his release. Oakley told the people holding Durant "This is not a threat"
"I have no plans for this, and I'll do everything I can to prevent it, but what will happen if a few weeks go by and Mr. Durant is not released? Not only will you lose and credit you may get now, but we will decide that we have to rescue him. I guarantee you we are not going to pay or trade for him in any way, shape or form… So what We'll decide is we have to rescue him, and whether we have the right place or the wrong place there is going to be a fight with your people. The minute the guns starts again, all restraint on the U.S. side goes. Just look at the stuff coming in here now. An aircraft carrier, tanks, gunships…the works. Once the fighting starts, all this pent-up anger is going to be released. This whole part of the city will be destroyed, men, women, children, camels, cats, dogs, goats, donkeys, everything… That would be really tragic for all of us, but that's what will happen."
I think the point I'm trying to make here is if go to war, you have to be willing to destroy everything. You are not there to 'keep the peace'. You are there to flatten everything. If you are not willing to do that, it is not worth going.

N1nestein,
I see by your profile that was your first post. I'd like to welcome you here. Come back, and bring friends with you. I see by your words, we might be close to the same age, or at least lived in the same times, with similarities in common. I have voted in every election, since I was old enough to vote. I vote every election.
I agree with you. Ronald Reagan was the first, and last President I ever voted for, who I felt sure was worthy of my vote. Further and beyond that, I know he was appreciative of my vote. I voted for Reagan in both elections, and the only way I can describe to you, as to how I felt, when I pulled the handle and cast my vote, those two times were the proudest moments in my life. I felt proud to be an American, I felt proud to be free, and it felt great to be alive. if I think of it today, I will either cry, or get mad. I do not think too much about it.
In the years since, what have we had? The Bush Dynasty (or Travesty, whichever you prefer), the Clinton's, both Bill and Hillary, both insulting to America. Who else? Al Gore, John Kerry and a slew of other forgettable loosers, and lastly Barrack Husein Obama. After Reagan, if those people are the best and brightest this great country has to offer, we are doomed to failure, due to mediocrity. In the interim, we ALL wait patiently…..
Now THAT is a president. Miss you Ronnie.
And that's because Reagan knew and believed what he was talking about. His words came from his heart and sould as well as his brain….unlike the current White House Occupant.
I, too, sense a change, RightSide.
Perhaps that's the reason cloning was invented!
Forgive my posted statement here to those 24/7 politicalphiles but its important to be clear about what is happenning in Virginia, NY 23rd etc. This conservative "shock" that has taken both Libs and Republicans by startling surprise is about…..
THE CORRUPTION OF YOUR POLITICAL POSITIONS AND THE CORRUPTION OF OUR FREEDOMS ! As you are quickly learning (hopefully) we are going to fight you at the polls with an angry resolve. You have little understanding of the beast you have awakened and released. That beast is freedom loving Americans who pay their way…not liberal whiners who want to be fed in a high chair. Start packing, losers !
Walt,
Why don't those clowns in DC understand this concept? It lost US Korea, it lost US Vietnam. Here we go again, right down the yellow brick road, and that yellow leads straight to the White House.
War is not pretty. But while we are there, it is time to kick ass and not take names. They want to be martyrs? Fine, send them home to Allah, send them NOW. Kill them all and let Allah and his hairy legged virgins sort them out.
As to blowing up some tents and caves and some camels, dogs, cats, sheep, goats and other livestock, so be it. if one does not want to be in a war, change your politics and move to another sewer. Otherwise, you are at risk of being listed as either collateral damage, or cannon fodder. One drop of American blood, is not worth all the blood, sand, or opium poppies in Afghanistan.
because we don't fight wars to win anymore….this is the problem ….Hell if were nto going use these bombers , battleships then I say scrap them all… It will save so much money… if not get off you high horses and let them know the bombers are on the way…. Launch about 20 in the air and turn those mountians into valley's
AMEN, Brother!
The only solution is to ignore party affiliation and begin to vote against every incumbant in office who ignores common sense, honesty, and the constitution. This includes all the sell outs who took the political payoffs and voted in the TARP funding to open the flood gates of the greed and grab policies now in open practice. Vote against incumbants until there is someone to vote for.
Thanks for the Welcome. You captured my feelings dead on… I was so proud to vote for Reagan both times. I have never missed an election to vote ever national or local. I take it as my duty to learn the candidates positions and be an educated voter. It never ceases to amaze me how many people only form an opinion based on what the media feeds them.
I, like you probably were, was pretty frustrated this spring watching what was happening to our country. It was a powerless feeling. But then an amazing thing happened. I started emailing with a few friends about it and that steadily grew until we had a substantial group. I then realized that the true power comes from individuals acting in groups to effect change. I have a much better outlook but am still amazed how many people are completely naive about so many thing happening in our government.
Our job is to spread the word… remind people that government works for us by the brilliant design of our founders. "A wise and frugal government, which shall restrain men from injuring one another, which shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned. This is the sum of good government, and this is necessary to close the circle of our felicity." Thomas Jefferson, First Inaugural Address
Too true… but even if they had his heart, they would need his spine. Most people with an r after their name would prefer to cower away from the limelight… it is the nature of being free and keeping to a private life.
Quite the anti-thesis of the liberal cum progressive, really communist party.
I wasn't even born when this speech was made and yet, listening to it now, I hang on every word. I believe the good and reasonable people of this country will do more to inspire our next conservative leader than some leader expecting to inspire us.
Independent, Conservative and Proud
Exactly.
I recall when Reagan was in office, his critics would accuse him of being an empty suit; when in actuality, he was smarter than all of them. Now, we have someone in the White House who'd have to work his way up to being an empty suit, and he gives them tingles up their legs. Go figure.
Does anyone know who the Gipper’s speech writer was in this instance? That’s some genuine artistry. A real one-two punch delivered without a second thought. I love the way he turns the Zapata quote re: dieing on your feet on it’s head.
I have never been so proud of my countrymen as I am today. In the most responsible ways we are regaining our footing and "righting our ship." I meet with my local tea party group almost weekly. Right now we're currently setting up forums on cap and trade, and we've lined up speakers. I have attended several tea parties and went to Washington with millions of other Americans. We are doing everything right: no rioting, no "incidents," and even in our disbelief over Scozzafava, we simply did what we do best: With nary a voice raised, we sent a message loud and clear to the GOP — through donations, bus trips to NY23 to campaign, emails, phone calls made for Hoffman from all over the country. Americans ARE exceptional. About that there can be no doubt.
I love you all and I love Ronald Reagan.
we drove down a dirt road to an almost deserted company owned town at the foot of the mountains outside el paso to vote for him in 1980- we need to drive down that road again.
look in the mirror. we`re still here.
We need to face the fact that we did not reach this sorry point in our country's history by accident, it was by design.
An ex-KGB agent, Yuri Bezmenov, gave a series of lectures back in the early 1980's explaining (warning us) exactly how Communist elements infiltrated America and changed/transformed her from within. At that time, he said their plan had already worked beyond their wildest dreams.
As Mr. Bezmenov explains, it has nothing to do with conspiracy or spies or any exotic Hollywood-type plots… it is completely OVERT… for example, in-your-face community organizers (ACORN/SEIU/Obama) and radical liberal teachers and college professors (Obama/Ayers) and anti-capitalist eco-terrorists (Van Jones, Anita Dunn/Obama/Ayers). All out in the open, right there in front of our eyes.
A chill will go down your spine when you hear him describe (back then) our current day America and realize just what a horrible mess we have gotten ourselves into.
Watch this short video. Forward to 1:17 if you are truly pressed for time.
IT IS WORTH YOUR TIME!!

To answer your question, a state can "opt out" of the government insurance, but not out of paying for it. That's how they're going to ram it down all of our throats. What state legislature will be able to pass an opt out measure where they opt out of a benefit that they're still on the hook for paying for?
Good Day
I am new here and just wanted to say hi to you.
What’s discussion today?
Hello
I am a new member here and just wanted to say hi to you.
What’s happening today?
Congratulations?
I Want to Buy That
A blonde goes into a nearby store and asks a clerk if she can buy the TV in the corner.
The clerk looks at her and says that he doesn’t serve blondes, so she goes back home and dyes her hair black. The next day she returns to the store and asks the same thing, and again, the clerk said he doesn’t serve blondes. Frustrated, the blonde goes home and dyes her hair yet again, to a shade of red. Sure that a clerk would sell her the TV this time, she returns and asks a different clerk this time. To her astonishment, this clerk also says that she doesn’t serve blondes. The blonde asks the clerk, “How in the world do you know I am a blonde?” The clerk looks at her disgustedly and says, “That’s not a TV — it’s a microwave!”
