$373 Million to Stimulate Vending Machines

First Lady Michelle Obama visited the headquarters of the Department of Health and Human Services in Washington Tuesday. She devoted much of her talk to “the growing threat of obesity, particularly childhood obesity” in the United States, and she touted HHS’s recently-announced plan to spend $373 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act on plans to, among other things, improve the healthfulness of foods in vending machines.
The first lady did not discuss how such work might stimulate the economy or speed economic recovery. But she had glowing praise for the stimulus’ role in fighting obesity. “Congress and the president included $1 billion for prevention and wellness programs in the Recovery Act,” she told the crowd of cheering DHS workers, “and that includes funding for initiatives that will give communities the resources they need to address the obesity epidemic in their communities. This includes $373 million announced last month that would be available for communities that put together comprehensive plans to reduce obesity –- $373 million — and that would include everything from incentivizing grocery stores to locate in underserved areas; it could include improving meals at school; to getting more healthy, affordable foods into vending machines; to creating more safe, accessible places for people to exercise and play; and a whole lot more.”

We are getting closer to the nanny state every day…..
what a joke, incentivize grocery stores to locate in under served areas. in chicago they are blocking a would be grocery store in a very under served area, the inner city. and why are they blocking this store, is it the area doesn't want it, nope they are begging for it, is it the lack of jobs to be created, nope hundreds of local would get jobs. what is the problem? why it is the unions. wal-mart has been trying to put in a supercenter with a grocery store, with lower prices on everything,including groceries. but since they are non union, they are being stopped. but do any of the union grocery chains want to move in, nope. so those poor inner city people are being held hostage by their duly elected democrats to block jobs, opportunities, and fresh groceries, because the union would rather those people go hungry, than let in a wal-mart.
Just wondering……Maybe it would be cheaper, and healthier, to simply remove the vending machines. Then the people would have to walk to some neighborhood store to buy whatever, putting that money into the community, and giving some exercise to the workers.

again the people cheer that the government is telling you what to eat and when to eat it!!! So jonny who makes a small amount of profit in his vending machines now must be "sibsidized" by ur tax dollars when he cannto sell the products he is forced to put into his machines.

Next thing you know, the government will mandate that you must walk 10 steps in order to use their vending machines. That $300+ million could I don't know……be given back to the taxpayers OR pay down the massive amount of debt!!
I moved into a new office building is a suburban office park. It was 2 miles from a large poor neighborhood. I saw poor people drive an extra 2 miles past a neighborhood store to shop in a newer larger store in the same chain. They howled when their store was closed due to dropping sales and shoplifting.
By the way improving meals at school has been going for years. They don't eat their fruit nor drink milk. The healthy food is tossed. People need to be hungry in order to eat what is served.

There's an old biblical saying…all things are not good, but all things work together for the good for those who love God!
I can't believe the ignorant posts on here. If you read her quote, the vending machines are one item in a list of several – and who knows what she could be talking about? perhaps is vending machines in schools or government offices. And helping to build grocery store in low-income areas is imperative to a healthful society. No one is telling people they have to do one thing or another, it's giving people a choice. If the only thing you can afford is the $1 hamburger at the McDonald's down the street because the grocery store is an hour busride, that's what you will eat. And no, change won't happen overnight, it will take time, but the options must be made available.
Being a guy but nonetheless still classy and elegant I can say most assuredly that I would not take that ride around the block…..(grin).

I have a good friend who has a vending company. They have a contract with a local school district that requires them to put "healthy" food choices in along with the regular vending machine fare. The kids refuse to buy the healthy stuff. He has tried cutting costs to practically nothing, but it still doesn't sell. He ends up pulling it out of the machines and giving it away or having to dispose of it because it gets out of date.
