Tea Partiers Turn on GOP Leadership
by PubliusInteresting story at Politico. Having been involved with both the tea parties and GOP leadership, color us unsurprised:
While the energy of the anti-tax and anti-big government Tea Party movement may yet haunt Democrats in 2010, the first order of business appears to be remaking the Republican Party.
Whether it’s the loose confederation of Washington-oriented groups that have played an organizational role or the state-level activists who are channeling grass roots anger into action back home, Tea Party forces are confronting the Republican establishment by backing insurgent conservatives and generating their own candidates—even if it means taking on GOP incumbents

I said – in print – months ago that any Republican who tries to glom onto the TEA Party movement is asking for a drubbing, because the GOP has been a big enough part of the problem to deserve any derision that comes their way. Add to that the fact that many of the TEA Party activists are not Republicans at all and any Republican insider who woos the TEA Party folks is courting disaster. Only Sarah Palin is an exception to this because, 1) GOP insiders trashed her too, and 2) she's been an outsider since she took on Alaska's corrupt GOP old boy network and won.
That is why I believe, by the way, that Sarah Palin will lead the TEA Party peeps in an insurgent campaign in 2012 against the worse-than-useless GOP morons who are the problem.
We on the libertarian-conservative right really have NO representation anymore. Sarah is it, and thank God for her.
Had a GOP fund-raising org call last night. After the fifth time I told her "I'm very upset with the Republican Party now and don't want to contribute to them", I (gently) hung up on her. Hope they ask their callers how many times that happens.
Listen up, GOP!
I admit to being torn between the pragmatists- third parties just lose you elections- and the fed-up- continuing to support those who don't pay attention to you just gets you ignored more.
I could get behind a reformed Republican party, but I don't see it yet.
It is time to look hard at all the RINO's. They are all infected with the Washington scourge.
Lindsey Graham needs to be held to task, he just signed on to the Kerry-Boxer Cap and Trade Bill. At first blush, it might appear he has lost his mind, but on closer introspection, it is not his mind; but his moral compass. He just pulled a Washington insiders trick. He cut his deal today, for a favor yet to come in the future. His office needs flooded with calls, emails and faxes…………
Amen!! Congress must be changed Both Dems AND Reps. GOP Keeps rehashing same old wishy-washy nominees. I Join Independants, Libetarians and Democrats Clean them out once and for all!!!
Anger is good for starting a movement but vision is needed to sustain it.
They ALL need to go, Republicrats and Demicans alike.
The GOP and the DNC hasn't had a pro American{meaning the people and not their special interest}thought in their heads for decades. The only historical mistake is keeping all career politicians in both parties in office.
Since Obama got elected the democrats have shown just how much they really hate this country. The democrats need to be thrown out en-masse.I think Obama winning was agood thing because he showed everyone the true faces of evil.
The republicans need to be voted back in but all career politicians wear those evil faces because they're all bought and paid for.Fixing the Federal Government of the United States won't take a scapel,,,It'll take a giant axe.
Didn't Madame Pelosi say it was time to drain the swamp? it is time to give them ALL a royal douche. Flush 'em.
DIM-ocrats and Republi-CONS alike. They have abdicated their collective responsibility to US, the Citizens.
I would love to see Nancy Pelosi picking her own grapes at Pelosi Vineyards, without illegal immigrant labor….

I am not for Third Parties! They only elect the other party. I am not sure what motivates Dick Army and his Freedom Works? I do know we must and will get back to the basics of what makes this country Exceptional. That is our Constitution.
The GOP needs to abandon the "compassionate conservative" nonsense which is just Progressive Politics Light. In any head to head contest, the dems are going to win on Progressive Ideals because they are more consistent and wiling to take it to the max. Trying to create a hybrid of conservative principles with a progressive veneer poisons the former so that they are no longer achievable.
Shout out to GOP: get back to small government, balanced budgets, low tax, fiscal conservatism and individual rights and responsibilities.

Deb,
"They have no damn right to interfere in our free right to do as we damn well please."
~Barry Goldwater~
I would rather lose with my principles and dignity intact, than win without them. Listen up GOP!
Yes – that is correct. And sadly, the GOP has colluded with the Dems to create bigger and bigger government which infringes our individual rights.
We should have "islands of government power in a sea of individual rights" – but our current trajectory is towards puddles or mirages of individual rights in a vast desert of government power.
Won't make any difference Cowboy. You can call till your fingers fall off. They are traitors but the question is why? For their future posterity with a sweet pay off? Maybe because they know they will be voted out in 2012 and retirement is looming anyways so what the hell. They all need to be rooted out no matter what party and unless we do our job, the chances of getting Congress away from the socialists in 2010 are dismal.
We also need candidates that can't be blackmailed for past indescretions.
Deb,
the puddles have turned to quicksand. Personally, they should all be sent to the Isle of St. Helena.
If we all work together, this country can be saved. I found the best way to reach the populace that doesn't use computers and only watches MSM is to write letters to the local papers. Some papers won't print the letters, but a lot do and most of these people DO read the local paper especially in rural areas. That is what I'm planning to do: educate the non-voters and the clueless.
In my county, only 18% voted in the past election and I find that apathy despicable.
Considering they ALL only work 2-/2 days a week, when will they EVER have time to listen? (ugh)
Al Franken 'Nuff said
Conservative are sickened by Lindsey Graham, Orin Hatch, and John McCain wussy type republicrats and the party bosses who favor them. The republcan party better turn unapologetically conservative or their toast!
Politico still doesn't get it, they think that the think tankers are running the show, sorry, I'm a tea partier and I listen to no one but my own common sense. I say let 'em keep thinking that way and get a surprise in 2010.
Yep, Grahamnesty and the rest need to be weeded out but we also need to send a message to non elected RINOs who are supporting this man-child's attempt to EuroSocialize America. Few incumbents can still be trusted. The rest need to be new and come from our grass roots in 2010.
Interesting debate. And while I welcome primary contests and the fight to return the Republican Party to its roots. we must also at times keep an eye toward what can actually be accomplished. We didn't get in this mess overnight; and we won't get out of it that way either. In essence I'd say we need to be able to take what we can get when we can get it. Take Florida, for example. Rubio can accomplish a lot even if he does not win the primary. Particularly, he can move Crist to the right. But if Crist wins the primary, I'd hope the Tea Partiers will accept that he will still be better than Meeks. After all, a vote you can count on being cast correctly half the time is still better than a vote you can never count on being cast correctly.
By all means we need to redefine the debate. But we also need to accept that in some places the process will take more than one election cycle. 400 Minnesota Republicans deciding that Norm Coleman wasn't "Republican" enough might well have given Barry his 60th Senate seat. The absolute worst thing that can happen is to let something like that continue.
Good for you. Nobody else could've phrased and presented your points better.
Yep, no surprise here. Many RINO's need the boot, too.
Exactly. You try to become the face of a true grassroots movement just by showing up. You'e done. You vote for ridiculous legislation that increases my taxes. You're done. You sit on the sidelines while the wacko-lefto-demo's make a shambles of this government and then try to pass yourself off to your constituents as a reformer. You're done.
My mother, hardly a "get in your face" voter, asked some pointed questions to one Rep. Mark Kirk (RINO) -IL. She wanted to know how he could possibly vote for that abortion known as Crap and Tax. Suffice it to say, his position has changed and he would not vote for it, again. Voices are being heard!!
So said those of conservative bent who decided to not vote for McCain. Boy, did that work out well!
You cannot shift government to conservative principles without having power within government. Better to elect a moderately conservative Republican that can be pressured to be even more conservative, than to be shut out completely.
Losing with dignity is still losing. I am in this battle to win!
I posted a reply to Hucbald's comment up above and I came across as pretty much a "get rid of the all" kinda guy. I am. Reality, however, says we first need to retake the congress (so, I can start capitializing it again) and then start weeding out the RINO's. Yes, the process is long. It will take more than three or four elections to do it. I would love to get behind a true Independent Libertarian-Conservative. Even strict Conservatative is just fine with me. Someone with a backbone to slap these dangerous demo-wacko's around. But, it's going to be hard to get Independents elected broadly.
As I’ve told you before, i was a life-long democrat till recently. I’m now a conservative independent. If those fools think that means i blindly support anyone in the Republican party they’re crazy. I’m extremely pissed off with all of them….both parties. Neither speaks for me. That’s why i like listening to Glenn….he understands that conservatives have been sold out by the GOP. Hannity still believes the GOP can do no wrong. NEWSFLASH: THEY ALL SLEEP TOGETHER. NONE REPRESENT THE PEOPLE, JUST THEIR OWN INTERESTS. WE’RE JUST THE SUCKERS THAT KEEP THE MONEY COMING. I’ve had enough. Graham, McCain, etc. are RINO’S and not to be trusted at all. YES, I’ll vote for third party candidates.
Remember Perot? He had a huge following until the GOP/DNC Sabotaged his campaign. It almost happened back then and it can happen again. I e-mailed Andrew about giving us a separate page where we can recommend candidates, and show who isn’t worthy. Remember how Obama raised huge amounts of cash online? $5 here and $10 there. We can do the same thing across state lines. Support any candidates that really represent “WE THE PEOPLE”. Time to put the fear of God in them. LET THEM KNOW THAT CONSERVATIVE DOES NOT MEAN REPUBLICAN!!!
If the Conservatives are not about principles and values, what are they? I will not win by any means necessary, this is what we accuse the left of. The end does not justify the means.
The GOP can't be that stupid that they aren't getting the revolt in their rank and file members and the donations that have been withheld. I think the grassroots Tea Parties are wonderful, but, we have to get involved with the GOP starting at the local level where candidates are vetted. The notorious RINOS in the party moved up the food chain without resistance over the years while too many of us were asleep ath the wheel.
None of us really has clean hands in this mess. Too many, myself included, were politically disengaged until it was too late to stop this train wreck.
It's really important that Rubio wins in Florida. I can't think of a bigger slap in the face to the entrenched GOP leadership. And, if Michael Steele was put in place hoping minorites would come into the GOP it is never going to happen. And, never in any meaningful numbers. It's one of the lessons that the GOP fails to learn.
We also need candidates that can't be blackmailed for past indescretions.
Well, sh_t, there go my chances.
But if Crist wins the primary, I'd hope the Tea Partiers will accept that he will still be better than Meeks. After all, a vote you can count on being cast correctly half the time is still better than a vote you can never count on being cast correctly.
I don't know. I find that the guy who never votes the way you want him to is far less infuriating than the guy who votes the way you want him to except for when it's really important.
I think nailing the media in their biases, omissions and poor fact vetting and using the internet to do it is more useful. Here's hoping that some of the worst offenders will be driven out of business by us.
A full year of boycotting all things Hollywood is a nice place to start. Informing businesses that their support of offensive programs and biased news via advertising money will have consequences is another. Unless you are idiots and would rather go broke like the NYT's falling on your ideological sword cutting off revenues can work wonders.

My Republican Congressman….the one I voted for…voted 'present' in re Rangle Resolution.
If a conservative runs against him, I'll vote for that guy and give him a chance.
Obama misused the voting 'present' that I find it insulting that any congressman worth their weight would do the same.
The Republicans need to stop conspiring with the enemy…I mean Democrats….and get back to their conservative, anti big government, strong defense, anti blowing-money roots.
If they dont, then i think a 3rd party should be formed……The American Conservative Party (ACP)
Make up your mind, is politics a chess match or open warfare?
We will not sink down to "war crimes" level like the libs, but we are sure going to have to destroy some villages along the way. And make some distasteful alliances that will last only as long as they fight with us. It may be a generation before anyone but a moderate Republican can get elected in Kalifornia, but does that mean we should not support any candidate who is not conservative enough? There are many places where the indoctrination runs deep, expect that scenario to be repeated hundreds of times on many levels of government.
We take what we can get, and barter with it to get what we want. Every inch forward is an inch closer to our destination. That is the mindset we need to win.
When the GOP called for money for McCain in primary I refused to support the RINO. Flat out and told them why. He voted too much with Kennedy on issues. Nope. Not holding my nose again that time.
Forming a new party and going against the Dems and Reps in every State where they control the registration processes for elections is like urinating into the wind. Not a great idea. Perot people found that out already when they were lied to and mislead attempting to register in multiple States. We don't have to repeat history to learn that lesson.
Conservatives are better off either retaking control of the GOP, or joining one of the already registered parties and taking or sharing control of it. Libertarians are of similar minds in many regards, although they may not want our defenses nearly as much as we do. There are other parties with similar goals. They need to support the Constitution and limited government along with reduced treaties that are deliberately undermining the Constitution.
In my State, they caucus. People who went early one year to a local GOP caucus were told thanks for coming, we already have decided who the candidates are, you can go home. But there hasn't been a caucus yet? Excuse me? WHAT? The leadership has already picked. Yup. That's as bad as voter fraud and trying to prevent voters from voting or from registering or registering dead people.
Well according to a lot of articles, the NY Times is going to get a bailout and so are some other papers but if people would boycott Hollywood and the fodder coming out of there, they would get the message. DO NOT go to the movies for one. DO NOT rent DVD's. Yes, very hard but doable.
Yes indeed. TEA Party's came about because people were not happy with our out of control government in general. The GOP need not pretend that they are without fault.

The words of Barry Goldwater would be lost on the leadership of today's GOP. They are so obsessed with the spiritual and private lives of the people that everything else takes a low priority.
I AM A REPUBLICAN PRECINCT CHAIR WHO SUPPORTS THE TEA PARTY MOVEMENT AND DISAGREE WITH HOW THE GOP IS BEING RUN.
WHAT I'D LIKE TO SEE IS THE TEA PARTIERS COME INTO THE GOP AND TAKE OVER THE PARTY. THE GOP IS THE CLOSEST THING TO WHAT THE TEA PARTIERS ARE ABOUT AND IT WOULD BE A LOT EASIER TO JUST RUN ROUGH-SHOD OVER THE IDIOT LEADERSHIP IN THERE NOW…
I AM ALL FOR IT. DON'T WORRY ABOUT A THIRD PARTY – JUST SHOW UP EN-MASSE AT THE NEXT PRECINCT ELECTIONS, VOTE OUT THE BONEHEADS, INSTALL YOUR OWN LEADERS AND TAKE OVER.
Right you are…………………even Teddy Roosevelt couldn't manage to pull it off !
Anyone calling for a righty fringe party is out of their teensy minds and knows nothing at all about America's political history.
No, not "hard" at all! Who, in their right mind, wants to watch the crap that Hollyweird puts out now ?
Perot did himself in and is a lunatic to boot! I guess that you have forgotten that Perot first left the race claiming that Bush was sending swat teams out to disrupt his daughter's wedding. WHAT A FLAKE !
Sadly, you just don't get it…………………………………….
And FYI………………………..Ross had about as much of a chance at really winning the presidency, as a copy of a week ago's newspaper.
THIRD PARTIES ARE NEVER THE ANSWER……………………………..UNLESS YOU WANT THE DEMS TO WIN !
There is a solution:
In November of 2010 the entire House of Representatives will have to stand for re-election; all 435 of them. One third of the Senate, a total of 33 of them, will also stand for re-election. VOTE EVERY INCUMBENT OUT!
If we comprimise then we end up with bums like Specter and Snow and Collins during very critical times. If we stick to our principles we may lose some battles but we will be in a better position to win the war. With that said one should not show up at a gun fight armed only with a knife.
But if Crist wins the primary, I'd hope the Tea Partiers will accept that he will still be better than Meeks. After all, a vote you can count on being cast correctly half the time is still better than a vote you can never count on being cast correctly.
I don't know. I find that the guy who never votes the way you want him to is far less infuriating than the guy who does vote the way you want him to, but only on things that aren't really important.
[...] Tea Partiers Turn on GOP Leadership Having been involved with both the tea parties and GOP leadership, color us unsurprised: [...]
While I have said in the past that I can see the need a Conservative third party coming to power in the future due to how the GOP has been treating Conservatives, I must change my mind here agree with you. A third party will just split the vote and end up handing the very critical 2010 election to the Democrats.
I just don't know how we Conservatives can get the GOP back on track from the veer to the left being done by the GOP leadership. Until that is done, there will continue to be various factions migrating towards a Conservative third party but not enough to make a them a real contender.
Light in the loafers Grahamnesty, McQueeg wee lap dog, needs to have a REAL GOPer run against him in a primary which Lindsey looses.
Both sides really hold on to the same basic ideas of altruism and unreason, These ideas need to be rooted out and replace with reason and egoism; and that ain't gonna happen with [these] Republicans in the game.
Yes! The GOP leadership has its collective head up its arse. About time they realized that a third party is about to form. I imagine a third party would hand ol' Barry a second term, but to hell with it. I'm sick and tired of the likes of McCain and other RINOs. If a conservative third party does form, I'll say goodbye to the GOP in a heartbeat.
A nascent third party will most likely hand Obama a second term and the Dems control for a few more election cycles, and you know what? I'm OK with that. I am so sick of the John McCain/David Brooks Republican brand. I'd get behind a conservative third party without ever looking back to the GOP.
And it will happen if the RNC doesn't flood the ballots with articulate conservative candidates the next election cycle.
Here is the Manifesto for a New Republican Party:
http://www.theobjectivestandard.com/issues/2006-f...
Except for a VERY SELECT FEW, I agree with Cowboy Logic… The ONLY way to rid the Republican Party of its liberals and Rino's is to vote them ALL out. I dearly hope we can find and qualify enough CONSERVATIVES to fill the ranks with integrity and love for this country. The BELTWAY beeds its collective asses spanked.
The GOP is throwing its weight behind the Meg Whitman and Carly Fiorina in CA.
Whitman is marginally better than our current governor, which isn't saying much.
Fiorina would be a disaster as Senator. Might as well retain Boxer.
With candidates like that, it makes the "third party vote results in Democrats in office" a rather empty threat.
I am a Conservative, my parents are registered Republicans who attended a teaparty here in my town. We all are furious with the GOP.
Maybe it's time our so-called Republican and Conservative reps get off their asses and start fighting instead of leaving it to Right Wing blogs, talk radio, Sarah Palin and tea parties. When is the last time a single representative from the right got the ball rolling against the Liberals?
Tea Party marches? Nope, that was grassroots.
NEA? Nope, that was Beck and the Right Wing blogs.
Van Jones? Nope, that was Beck.
Healthcare battle? Nope, that was Palin posting at MySpace that got that started.
Acorn? Nope, that was two kids with a video camera.
Notice a pattern here?
They actually found some semblance of GOP leadership to turn upon?
It seems as if I've been saying this forever buy here it goes. We get the leaders we deserve. We elected them, supported them with cash and signed on to their nonsense. The next time a Graham or Pelosi displays a lack of integrity look in the mirror. When was the last time you did the same, have you sold out, lied, obfuscated, called in sick to work when you weren't, told your mother you'd call when you didn't. Bah you say those are just harmless fibs.
But they aren't. We are no better than our chosen representatives. Funny how that happens.
It's about time to start creating and imposing term limits.
If any conservative candidate in South Carolina is thinking of running against L. Graham, here is some information said candidate can use against Graham regarding his idiotic, support of Boxer/Kerry big government climate legislation.

The point is we’re pissed off at Washington, right and left.
What I want to see is a Republican who isn't mealy mouth "nice", who doesn't mince words, and can be absolutely candid. Someone like Rush who can just cut through all the crap and tell it like it is. Let them scream!
Have you read now where the NFL Players Union, doesn't want Rush to buy the Rams because of his discrimination and hate? Ha! Gee, let me go figure, what % of that union is black? And secondly, why oh why, does the NFL need a players union? Are they underpaid?????!!!! And if the NFL Union is so great, how on earth did they let Michael Vick back in? Horrors up horrors! I love football, but screw the NFL!
Yes, I hate the cowardly mealy-mouth Republicans that play both sides. Screw them!
Good luck with that. I have been after term limits since the late 80's. The only way to make it happen is with a whole slate of new reps and at least 60 votes in the senate. Do you remember the Contract with America? Tom DeLay torpedoed term limits without breaking a sweat. It was only thrown in to get the naive (me) to vote for them. The R's never intended to enact term limits, and never will. Here is an experiment that you can conduct that will show you the likelihood of passing federal term limits. Walk up to someone who doesn't like you and hand them a knife, then tell them to slit their own throat. Observe results.
After reading my own comment I realized that the only method of achieving term limits is through the constitutional amendment process, I will try to do better next time..
Jesse Jackson and his ilk believe that every corporation, school, university, etc., needs to mirror society in it's employees, students, etc. He'll sue to get blacks onto corporate boards (or take a hefty payment to drop the suit), affirmative action needs to be ruthlessly employed everywhere , yet nary a word about professional sports. Or government agencies for that matter! Go into, or call, any government agency, you'll rarely see, or talk to, a white guy, forget about an asian dude!
If Palin gets the Republican nomination, the Republicans will get a shellacking in 2012 of historic proportions.
We are presently suffering under an administration that is remarkable for its lack of experience and competence. What's the advantage of replacing the inexperienced and incompetent Obama with an inexperienced and incompetent Republican?
Well if they want to mirror society with race – the NFL has, I believe, HA!, more than15% blacks. The hypocrisy is beyond disgusting!

Secret Republican weapon for 2010 — attack Pelosi
October 12, 2009 | 9:28 am
The House Republicans' campaign committee issued the first salvo last week, suggesting that Army Gen. Stanley McChrystal should approach House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and "put her in her place" on Afghan policy. Pelosi responded the next day, calling the statement a throwback to sexist rhetoric.
"I'm in my place. I'm speaker of the House, the first woman speaker of the House. And I'm in my place because the House of Representatives voted me there," she said. "That language is something I haven't even heard in decades."
But it's becoming clear that running against Pelosi — describing her as an out-of-touch liberal representing a fringe San Francisco constituency — is on the first page of the Republican playbook for the 2010 elections.
Republicans have used this playbook before, without success, running against Pelosi in 2006 and 2008. But this year, with Democrat Barack Obama in the White House and the midterm elections widely viewed as a referendum on his leadership, the GOP hopes Pelosi will prove a wedge issue among independent voters who swung a number of congressional districts from red to blue in last year's elections.
In August, the National Republican Congressional Committee rolled out an ad against a number of Blue Dog Democrats, including Illinois' Bill Foster.
The Republicans have been running the playbook all year. Back in April, when talk of omnibus spending was providing the heat of the moment, the NRCC launched this ad against Ohio Democrat Zack Space.
Will the ploy work this year?
Democrats are dismissive. "When Republicans have no ideas and no solutions, they resort to ineffective personal attacks,” said Jennifer Crider of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. “Republicans’ Karl Rove-style attacks didn’t work in 2006, didn’t work in 2008, and they won’t work in 2010.”
But Republicans are salivating over Pelosi's low ratings, Obama's slipping popularity and a stubborn recession, convinced the mid-term elections give the anti-Pelosi campaign new promise. “Nancy Pelosi is a very polarizing figure, and she is clearly much more well-known today then she was four years ago,” Republican consultant Carl Forti told Politico.com. “She can definitely be used to help indict or impeach Democratic candidates on the issue.”
Forget that…it won't happen! As angry as most of us are, most of us aren't morons and know that a fringe party, especially now, is nothing but stupidity and an utter disaster. Thankfully, enough of us won't be sucked into that garbage, but there are still some gullible jerks, who will go that route, should it appear, to hand Obama a second term.
IS THAT WHAT YOU WANT ?
No, Whitman is even worse than Arnold !
She has highly praised Van Jones and donated money to Diane Feinstein; not once, but several times and praised Di Fi over and over again.
A fringe party, in California, won't help anything either. California ois just lost, lost for many reasons and the lack of good GOP candidates there, is very low on the list of what is wrong out there.

Do We Continue to Reward Bad Behavior?
The "Third Party is not the answer" crowd makes me laugh. The Republican party will try and hijack the Tea Party/Conservative movement. I see it beginning already, with Hannity starting to put down the thought of a Third Party. Republicans will do the usual old "bait and switch" by saying "shrink government", "cut spending", "lower taxes", etc. Maybe even "flat tax"! Then, the same socialist big government Republicans we have seen for decades will show up after the election.
All they want is to get back in power. These are the guys who gave us George Bush Sr., candidate Bob Dole, George W. Bush, John McCain. Well, we can't wait any longer. We need conservatives who will uphold the constitution the way our founding fathers envisioned.
