OSLO (AP) – President Barack Obama won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday in a stunning decision designed to encourage his initiatives to reduce nuclear arms, ease tensions with the Muslim world and stress diplomacy and cooperation rather than unilateralism.
Many observers were shocked by the unexpected choice so early in the Obama presidency, which began less than two weeks before the Feb. 1 nomination deadline and has yet to yield concrete achievements in peacemaking.
Some around the world objected to the choice of Obama, who still oversees wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and has launched deadly counter-terror strikes in Pakistan and Somalia.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee countered that it was trying “to promote what he stands for and the positive processes that have started now.” It lauded the change in global mood wrought by Obama’s calls for peace and cooperation, and praised his pledges to reduce the world stock of nuclear arms, ease American conflicts with Muslim nations and strengthen the U.S. role in combating climate change.

Since President Obama hasen't yet accomplished anything, other that tripling our national debt and pushing unemployement into the double digits and throwing Isreal under the bus, than this award must be for simply NOT being George Bush.

I think that awarding the Nobel Peace Prize for effort is a good thing. God help us if Obama produces the same kind of results.

Apparently "soaring rhetoric" is all they're really looking for at the Nobel committee- rather than any actual results (like Reagan's ending the 40-year Cold War with a military build-up)… or even a speck of historical precedent that would suggest what Obambi's saying makes sense.
Maybe he won for proposing that we hand over large swathes of Afghanistan to the medievel savages of the Taliban, or for abandoning our allies to the Iranians and Russians' expansionists schemes (Ukraine next).

She explained that the oppressive shari’a law that results in stonings, mainly for women, is actually “gender justice”, which might be news to women’s-rights groups around the world:

Under what definition of “gender justice” does that fall? The laws of shari’a deliberately make women chattel to their husbands, fathers, or brothers. My first reaction was to laugh. Then, I learned that the nomination deadline was February 1st, and I guffawed. Finally, I found out that the Nobel rules stipulate that the award has to be for work previous to the nomination deadline.
At that point, I totally lost it: Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize for his ground breaking work as an ACORN lawyer and his brilliant Senate career… plus those circa ten days as president.
I'm an optimist – maybe this will help strengthen the resolve of those in Congress who disagree with his statist policies to defeat them. Obama is obviously on track to sell us completely into international slavery via massive financial commitments around the world. The more ego-driven and peevish he is, the more his agenda is displayed in high relief.
Those numskulls in Sweden lost their credibility with me years ago. I knew they were completely off their rockers when they gave Gore a prize. Now they are giving it to “The One” because of what he might do – incredible. Even the MSM are scratching their heads over this one.
The next prize goes to director Roman Polanski for his work with the young girls of Los Angeles.
He will receive the Nobel Piece Prize.

People just don't understand the definition of "peace" as applied by the Nobel people:

As a Norwegian, living in America,I am shocked at the Nobel Committee's decision. I checked out some of the Norwegian sites and found that not all Norwegians are in agreement with this. On the polls, at least half DO NOT AGREE! E-mail the Nobel Committee with your comments. There is a web address on their site.It's a shame that they cannot see the man for what he is…a divider…Martin Luther King must be turning in his grave…
The Noble "Terrorist" Award is only handed out to potential, past, or future facists that have the desire to destroy freedom and enslave their own populations.
Obama is well Qualified, and on his way to accomplishing those goals, so I think he deserves that award.

I tried to quash my outrage at this whole thing, but after being told over and over that I'm just mad because my president didn't get one, I've decided it's better if I just point and laugh.
Eventually, the more intelligent parties on the left will realize (and may already have done) how ridiculous and pathetic this is. Others, however, will continue to believe this is an affirmation of the greatness of their oh so wonderful president. I just hope the real people of the world can see how ludicrous and insane this is.
I pointed out to a British friend just how little this man has done and how many of the evil Bush policies are still in place. She pointed out that the die hard Obamazombies in her country don't care about any of that because for the it's all about the hopes for the future.
We've become a country/world where actual work and effort have become things to ignore. Instead, the people are more enchanted with words and hopes.
