CBS: Bertha Lewis Rails Against ‘Modern-day ACORN McCarthyism’

Bertha Lewis, the chief executive of embattled community group ACORN, told reporters at the National Press Club today that her critics are engaged in “modern-day ACORN McCarthyism” born in part from the group’s history of “going after the rich and the powerful,” the New York Times reports.
While defiant, Lewis did acknowledge that her group had its problems: She said videos showing ACORN employees advising conservative activists posing as a pimp and prostitute “made my stomach turn,” according to CNN. “It just made you sick,” she added. The group has appointed an investigator to examine why the behavior took place.
But Lewis refused to make apologies for her 40-year-old organization, which she said wasn’t going anywhere. Congress, she said, can’t destroy the group by withholding federal funding: “We didn’t have government funding for years,” she said to illustrate that point, according to Politico. “We may not have government funding in the future.”
ACORN, or the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, has been receiving about $2.5 million to $3 million each year from the federal government, Lewis said – only about 10 percent of its annual budget. The rest of its funding comes from membership dues and private donors.

Quite frankly, Joe McCarthy was right.

I just got done watching Glenn Beck's interview of La. AttnGen Buddy Caldwell and I urge anyone to check it out on Beck's site (hope he has it posted later).
What sounded the most promising was Mr Caldwell's mention that his office was going to be the clearinghouse for other states. If my anxiousness has not gotten out of hand, it sounded like many states are coordinating to "Book 'em, Dano" irrespective of what Holder does.
I just got done watching Glenn Beck's interview of La. AttnGen Buddy Caldwell (currently investigating ACRIME) and I urge anyone to check it out on Beck's site (hope he has it posted later).

Hey, ACORN has to clean up its act. One wonders if it will be easier to scrap it and start over, rather than refurbish the name. But if they can straight up and fly right (e.g. perform to their stated mission) then more power to them.
Having said that…more power to the opposition party for forcing ACORN to come clean!
When I clicked through ACORNS claims that only 10% of their funding comes from Federal funds some time ago, one of the *private donors* was HUD. *Private*? HUD? WTH?

What is being done to look into this CEO who is in denial even trying to turn the tables and play victim. I would like to know what Bertha Lewis makes and what are her qualifications. How can this woman be CEO of anything? How did this go on? You embezzle millions and nothing happens .Is anyone going to go to jail? No whistle blowers at Acorn for sure.

A generous donor to Democratic candidates and causes, Hunter in recent years has given money to the presidential campaigns of Sherrod Brown, John Kerry, Howard Dean, and Wesley Clark.
Media Matters receives financial support from the Tides Foundation, the Arca Foundation, the Peninsula Community Foundation, and the San Francisco Foundation.

This is where the shell game comes into play. The network, of which ACORN is a part, is no doubt shuffling money around in such a fashion that ONLY a probe would be able to reveal it's depth. This is where RICO should come into play.
Perhaps she is "technically" correct in that ACORN only gets 10% of their funds DIRECTLY from the government but there's no question that they get much more through their shell organizations and charities.
I believe what she is implying that ACORN but a leg on the beastly tick that is living off the blood sweat and tears of the American taxpayer. Worse is that we have "leaders" in office that will continue to shield these ticks as long as they have the influence to do so.

I also could not agree more about Hannah, James and Andrew. When I said "an investigation led by Democrats." I did not explain that it was a given that there is only an investigation because those three blew everything up, and they had no choice but to investigate. I thought that part was implied. Quite frankly, IMHO, those three will end up in the history books as heroes, I hope.
