What A Long, Strange Trip For Federal Funding It’s Been…
by PubliusFrom the “Dude…No Waaaay” folder, comes this story from Santa Cruz:
One of the most popular bands in rock ‘n’ roll history will have its legacy including photos, show tickets, toys, posters and recordings preserved online thanks to a federal grant. The Grateful Dead Archive, housed at the McHenry Library, has been awarded $615,175 by the Institute of Museum and Library Services to photograph and scan collection images and upload them. The public will be able to access the online collection and offer fans the opportunity to contribute to the collection by digitally submitting photos.
Christine Bunting, head of special collections and archives at McHenry, said the school will use the grant over 2½ years to archive what she said is the world’s largest public collection of Dead memorabilia.
“The ultimate goal of making the archive digital is that everyone will have a Grateful Dead experience,” Bunting said.

Going to hell in a bucket we are. They can digitize the Grateful Dead, but they can't put the Senate Finance Committee health reform bill on the internet? It's not just the Dead smokin' crack.
My "Grateful Dead experience,” will come in Novemember of 2010 when this congress has expired.
Someone's "livin' on reds, vitamin C and cocaine" obviously.
I was thinking this was some Half-Way to April Fools Day joke. Please tell me I am right. PLEASE.
The link is broken to the full article.
anybody want their tour planes? they landed at Riverside, ca airport and were old enough that they needed major work to fly out, they just left them and their they sit……
Ohforcryingoutloud. Look, I went to some Dead concerts in the 70's – you know, back when I was a dope smoking teenaged libtard – but seriously, seriously, Whisky Tango Foxtrot?! If you just got a nickel from every Dead fan, you could raise a million dollars for this project without having to tap the taxpayer's wallet, and make an even nicer project out of it.
I'd contribute to that, and not just ¢5, but this is among the very last things tax money should go toward, if not the last.
Sheesh.
Do we all get tye-died tee shirts for out tax dollars?
And now for a game of hacky-sack followed by a Super Veggie Burrito!
The Senate is stuck on trying to come up with a good rhyming scheme in iambic pentameter.
I love the Dead and they were by far the greatest concert experience, but totally agree it's not something taxpayers should pay for. I agree with Hucbald…you could totally get more than that collecting at at Ratdog, Dead, or even DSO concert…
@Debcal On the Dead lot (parking lot) we Dead Heads would say Fatty Veggie Burrito. Just to be clear.
I'm really bummed that they are using federal money for this. The community would do it for free.
Why not funding a Pee-Wee memorabilia collection?
Wondering if there is a section set aside for the discussion of cheese sandwiches sold from the back of cars.
Screaming intentional: DIE YOU FREAKING HIPPIES, DIE!
Rant is over. Hope no one took offense.
All Deadheads I know would gladly (and usually do) spend hours of their free time doing this kind of thing. Another payoff to a donor probably. What else does the current administration do other than bribe people?
What exactly remains to be studied? There is a library's worth of Dead books, a zillion shows on tape. Private enterprise has been doing this quite well without dripping bacon juice all over it.
You've got to be shitting me, man!
They had $1T to spend. They had to spend on something. The laughable thing is what did these conversations that actually created this appropriation sound like? And they wonder why we see the full head of Washington getting lined up on the chopping block? The scarier thing — this is only the beginning! They have no limits to their lunacy!!!!
Their rich heritage will now be passed on to all generations, I agree we are in financial hardship and this administration is KILLING us with all their tax and spend initiatives I guess I'll be poor a little longer. This is better funding than some of the garbage being pressed upon us. It is totally unimportant and unneeded but hey now aint nothin finer than a DEAD SHOW! I can't believe that I have become a complete contradiction to my myself, I thought I grew up after Jerry died. If you get confused listen to the music play
So, which on one of Obama's cronies is a big GD fan? It is probably payback for someone who helped him in his campaign. HIs generosity knows no bounds….with our money.
Stories like this always make me so happy that I get to pay taxes. Nobody brought me back a t-shirt either.

Please No, I don't want to OD!
That being said: there was nothing like a Dead Show at Ventura County Fair Grounds sitting on the beach.
The Dead Fans I know would photograph and scan the collection images for Free. These guys are just Capitalist Pigs in Santa Cruz of all places.
Yup, I was there the 1st year and then again 3 years later I think, LOL. Was cool to see the palms in the breeze on the stage and remembering Bobby's Caw, Caw sounds. Brings back memories. Early 80's dead was pretty good stuff. Now I'm grown up and have a life.
Uncle Sam's new T-shirt:
"$615,175 in federal tax dollars paid for The Grateful Dead Archive, and all I got was this lousy tie-dye t-shirt."
The Dead made so much money Jerry had to incorporate. This is ridiculous.
This is exactly the type of thing that an institute of museum and library services should use its funds for. Whether you appreciate the Grateful Dead or not, the band was a true American cultural experience and played music across America for 30 years. Their catalog of music is an important part of the history of American music. Public funds are used for preserving our history and 600,000 is a small price to pay to make sure that our history is kept for future generations to admire or critique.
Q: What does a Deadhead say when he's out of dope?
A: HEY, this music really DOES suck!!!
Is it ok to mention on here the incredibly close relationship between the beloved Vice-President and his lovely wife with the famed Gerry Garcia. I would also hate to bring to your attention the wonderful past history of the loving and intelligent VP and wife as Dead Heads in their youth.
Now that I have your attention the charming and delightful Vice-President and his lovely wife would be ( are you ready?) Albert Gore and wonderful Tipper. Could this be the pressure source for the funding?
The largest room in the entire exhibit will be the "overdose tent"
Private funding, yeah, it would be a cool project….but not w/federal money. I love the Dead, have seen them many times back in the day, however, this is about as useful as funding Murtha's private airport.
I am poor, on disability….where is my money Mr. Democrat?
jcamp is the only sane person here! Come on, if "Big Government" really is your concern, there more 600,000 other places worth looking. But I think site is just about Red State identity politics: there is a category for ACORN, but nothing about ag subsidies. Please!
F those hippies! It's all about Iron Maiden the best and biggest band in the world! No one has toured more countries or sold more albums period. Maiden! Maiden! Maiden! Iron Maiden!
