Frankly, I don't really know much about Internet email other than that it is complicated. It's certainly possible that someone outside of NBC spoofed Stone's address, but I think NBC's overly defensive reaction is totally out of place. It's perfectly plausible that the email could have been a spoof, but in that case I would expect NBC first, to apologize preemptively, even if there is nothing that they need to apologize for; and second, to cooperate fully with the recipient to find out as much as possible about the actual perpetrator. (Assuming that Stone herself didn't send the email.) It doesn't look good for NBC to wrap itself in a defensive shell, but it's not all that surprising.

If you have never received a spam message purportedly from yourself, then you probably don't understand what is possible or is likely to have happened. There are three pieces that can be part of the header of any email, which should in principle all point to the same thing: the "sender", the "From" address, and the "Reply-to" address. Any hacker, no matter how dumb, knows how to send emails in which all three addresses are spoofed, but if the server is up to date, it shouldn't go through that way. Sometimes they legitimately don't, e.g. if someone sends a reply to an email from someone else's account, it is commonplace (or at least ought to be) for him to specify his real address as the "Reply-to" address, which is the main reason why the "Reply-to" address is there, and is often a dead giveaway.

Unfortunately the sender of this email almost certainly didn't want or expect a reply, so that (optional) part of the header could be a spoof too.

This whole scenario is really only possible if NBC uses an outdated server configuration. This is eminently possible. OTOH, if their server is as secure as it ought to be, then the only possible spoof would have to come from within NBC. They could act to tighten up their server, but only if they are willing to pay the going price for it, which may be beyond their budget.

Anyway, for several years now, the Internet has been programmed to leave a trail of exactly which servers were involved at each step, and it ought to be possible to learn something from that. (Well, if not, then the effort involved in making servers leave footprints was misguided and ineffectual.) At a minimum, one should be able to compare the header portion of the offensive email to that of a normal email, and look for any discrepancies.

Anyway, here's a bit of unsolicited advice about handling emails (disclaimed as usual):

1) No harm will come from simply looking at an email – just don't click any of the links, no matter how innocuous or tempting they may be.

2) If you are suspicious about the origin of an email, e;g; if it purports to be a message from a bank asking you to "verify" your account information (and for some reason you don't recognize this as prima facie preposterous), check the "Reply-to" address; if it bears no relationship to the purported sender, then it is almost certainly spam. (Most spam filters are incapable of judging whether the Reply-to is phony, so they don't even bother.)

3) Before you even think of clicking a link, hover over it to see where it is going to take you. If it doesn't take you to a recognizable location, don't click it. (There are tools to find out approximately where an address is located, but sometimes all the Internet can tell you is an ISP address, which serves tens of thousands of email addresses.)

I don't think that the people (largely self-appointed) who control the Internet are either arrogant or stupid, no matter how much that might appear to be the case. Generally, they just have their priorities wrong. For example, eliminating spam is a useful goal, but not to the point of inconveniencing legitimate users, who might , for example, appreciate the capability to check the legitimacy of an email address. For a very short period about 10 years ago, this could be done, but it was the first thing to go when the gurus decided to prioritize the elimination of spam. In case you haven't figured it out for yourself, the capability of checking the validity of email addresses was eliminated on the grounds that spammers could use it to winnow out their otherwise humongous email lists. (BTW, if you ask one of them about it, you will run into a stone wall, along with the presumption that you are a potential spammer.) So the question really ought to be, do spammers care? Given the current situation, they simply send out their messages to a very long list containing many many illegitimate addresses, either because the have expired or because they were never legitimate in the first place. And the result is that a lot of servers on the Internet have to waste their time looking at these emails and getting rid of them. Is it any wonder that despite the enormous improvements in speed, the Internet seems more sluggish today than ever?

Notice at the bottom of the ALG statement the "Click here to unsubscribe to ALG press releases" That is how you unsubscribe not by sending an email saying “Take me off this list!”.
