IRS Severs Ties with ACORN Over Scandal

WASHINGTON (AP) – The IRS says it is severing ties with ACORN, the community activist group involved in a scandal after employees were caught on video giving advice to a couple posing as a prostitute and pimp.
The Internal Revenue Service said Wednesday it would no longer include ACORN in its volunteer tax assistance program. The program offered free tax advice to about 3 million low- and moderate-income tax filers this spring.
The IRS said ACORN, which is short for the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, provided help on about 25,000 returns.

We have combined the races since 1968 in order to give each equal access to success. Now, where is the equality with schools still showing preferance to minoriities in their selection process. Same schools, same education. over 30 years of "equality". It's not equality that is desired; its free money. Tax the rich and give to the poor so they can gain power.. We are losing the United States of America to theives, robbers, and tax cheats in the name of social equality. Democracy can only work if everyone does their part; dodging taxes is dodging their responsibility. If this is and example of how people fulfill their responsiibilites to the Democracy in the future…I'm araid the future looks bleak.

If someone would investigate ACORN instead of covering up like Rep. Conyers has been doing, maybe the IRS would yank their tax exempt status. I think that it is beyond time to no longer fund this organization with taxpayer money, for a full forsenic audit to be done of their books, and the IRS needs to pull their tax exempt status.

There are not any special skills needed, but ACORN needs your time to take the trainings that are neededed It would be great if you had tax preparation experience but we are looking for tax preparers, benefits application assisance, and financial literacy counselors alike. If you do not have time to do trainings, but would like to help us call back previous clients to make appointments for next year, this is crucial. We also need people who will distribute fliers for our free services and classes.
Training begins in the next month. ACORN needs help setting up their site and satellite sites. There is plenty to do now to make sure we do sufficient outreach to let hard-pressed families know of these necessary services. ACORN offers year-round tax preparation, preparation of back year taxes, and financial literacy courses.

somewhere (I think on one of the Belmont Club threads) a commentator noted that he/she had seen people cash outrageously large checks from the IRS. ACORN had the job of 'helping the poor' fill out their income tax returns… it would be neat to look at this if anyone anywhere actually audits that cesspool, which is doubtful, because ACORN is so useful to the current rent seeking political class…
While it's gratifying to see ACORN get its just deserts, let's not forget a very real group of victims in this drama: the poor folks ACORN was supposed to be assisting. I'm sure that many people working for ACORN did do some good for others, but the recent expose too clearly provided evidence that this is not a case of just a few bad apples. Unfortunately for those who were legitimately providing assistance to those that needed it, the organization as a whole is just too corrupt to be allowed to continue to suckle at the government teet. I only wonder how much better served these poor could have been at the hands of true local charities and organizations if, instead of being forced to "donate" to national power organizations like ACORN the average citizen had been allowed to keep their money and use it closer to home.

As fast as everyone is abandoning ACORN it seems like they were just looking for a reason to break with them.
The IRS has people they call tax practitioners. ACORN is a level below that and a volunteer helper. The may or may not actually sign returns and authorized preparors. Now they will be a mark that increases a chance of an audit.
Nice start. Now how about audits of ACORN-assisted returns. Each one shouldn't take too long, given that each is, almost by definition, low-income. Start with the five offices. Then "move-on" to some others.
I wouldn't be at all surprised if ACORN-assisted returns were considered "hands-off" as far as audits were concerned, so…I'd sure like to see the IRS audit some of those returns to see if they're legit.
Great….. about time….just think, given the tax advice from ACORN that we witnessed on the 6 video tapes……you have to assume that "all" tax returns completed by ACORN are prime candidates for an IRS audit…since ACORN recommended not reprorting income, overstating dependants and deductions, etc. just thing of the tax dollars the IRS could recover from such an audit of 100,000 tax returns over the past three years done by ACORN……fraud is a great motivation for the IRS to sniff them all out for similar fraudulant activity…..go get em IRS…..easy pickens…..

It should not be hard to find who used ACORN, since when I fill out my forms there is a line asking me to identify who helped me. I tried to get Charles Rangel and Tim Geithner, but I couldn't so I struggled through it all myself

Reason for being caustic – Obama said on his Sunday circuit how he wasn't following the ACORN thing because it wasn't worth his time! For weeks and months, ACORN goes on a relentless campaign of harrassment in which a powerful CEO can't seem to shake this group. Wherever they go, ACORN is there, and often they are there before the target. One such campaign involved H&R Block. ACORN showed up at the home of then CEO, Mark Ernst. Of course, we'll never know how much, if any, cash payments were transferred. That's because all cash that ACORN receives starts in their so called accounting firm, Citizen's Consulting Inc. Because both H&R Block and CCI are both private companies, seeing their books is next to impossible. As such any payments are hidden in the books of two companies that aren't sharing them.

Actually, it is my understanding that ACORN is NOT tax exempt, which is why they're able to do all this political work. It is apparently something that people have generally overlooked, and ACORN has been asked many times why it doesn't change its status (its actually incredibly difficult to do for an established business) because it would mean donations are tax deductible of course.

If I read the story right, it would seem like the IRS, as of this moment, has a backlog of 25,000 tax return audits it needs to complete.
One problem that still exists and is not mentioned in any of the articles is the reach of ACORN. The organization is so well structured that we know not how many or what other activities and organizations are part of the whole. An extensive investigation of the group is required in order to understand exactly what we are dealing with and where it has influence on our society.
Slowly their house of cards begin to fall. Besides the individual Democrats and even a few Republicans, did anyone know that ACORN had so many ties in the government?
