House Amends Bill with ‘Defund ACORN Act’ – Full Text
by PubliusBig Government has obtained the full text of the amendment–technically a “motion to recommit” to defund ACORN. The “Defund ACORN Act” passed the House this afternoon by an overwhelming margin of 345-75. The House vote comes just days after the Senate voted 83-7 to block ACORN from receiving federal housing grants. With these votes, 80% of the members of Congress have weighed in to block ACORN from receiving any more taxpayer dollars.

REPUBLICANS HAD TO SNEAK THIS AMENDMENT ONTO THE EDUCATION BILL IN ORDER TO GET IT VOTED FOR. THOSE WHO VOTED AGAINST, WERE JUST VOTING AGAINST BIG GOVERNMENT TAKE-OVER OF LENDING PRACTICES TO COLLEGE STUDENTS!

Sorry Nancy. I know a few of the congressman that voted against that bill. TRUST ME, they were not voting against a gov't takeover of student loans. It was the Acorn funding. Yes the takeover of student loans is terrible, but they voted no because they wanted a bill that did the same thing as well as fund Acorn. Actually Nancy it does not take away private funding for college loans. What it does is take away the Government backing of the third party lender and their dictates to them and makes the Government the direct lender. You could still get a loan from the bank to pay for education privately, but it will not be backed by the government, which means you will probably have a higher rate. I am opposed to this bill because it is unconstitutional for the Federal Government to be a bank, and it also attempts to control interest rates, which means that it will require more funding over time. But, it does increase the limits on grants and loans for those that desire higher education. It is my belief that this is a battle not worth fighting, although I do empathize with your position.

The Republicans knew what the bill was – they've been debating it all week. They knew they couldn't defeat it and so they put on this amendment in order to have something positive come out of it!
Therefore the Senate R's need a few D's to vote to amend the bill leaving the Defund part for conference. Right? This sneaky maneuver forces the Senate to strip ACORN and its affiliates from receiving future government funds. The R's will rightly argue that the two issues are separate and should be taken up separately when it reaches the Senate. Your thoughts?

If you scroll down to page 3 you will read that there are some broad terms there. It appears that any association who shares members with ACORN will be subject to this bill. Hopefully that will involve many of their satellite entities including SEIU. At this time I’m sure the shredders are going 24/7 and many boards are being shuffled around.
As to the 75 (Dems all) who voted nay on this bill thanks. You’ve just given us a concise target to shoot down in the next two election cycles. Appreciate the help. Folks if you see your reps name there start working for his/her opponent. Let’s throw the bums out.

I just found out that my governor, Sonny Perdue, of the Great State of Georgia, issued and Executive Order today banning all state agencies from doing any business with ACORN and an immediate review of all current contracts with them. Whoo Hoo!!! I love Sonny. (most of the time)

The bill was going to pass anyway. Future administration (2012) can get out of it and open up lending back to the private sector.
This is one battle where there was some casualties but we need to stay focused and win the war. Defunding ACORN, thanks to these guys, is a win. Heck, we all may want to get a medical degree to perform our own medical treatments if we don't keep up the heat against Obamacare and win that one.

If I read the document correctly, it appears that any organization with directors in common or a financial interest in ACORN is also subject to defunding. Does this means the end of the SEIU gravy train as well?

I guess I'm still waiting to see where that bill goes. I'm impressed they managed to get the amendment in, frankly. The House Dem's are such a bunch of hyena's.
Do NOT allow yourself to be fooled by this. The Senate and House bills for the defunding of ACORN are two SEPARATE bills. The House Bill is an Education Bill. The Senate Bill is a Housing Bill. This is an old, old Parliamentary TRICK. In the dead of night very quietly the funding will be reinstated. We will all have to watch them like a hawk. Everyone of these slippery criminals; Republican and Democrat have to go. There has to be a complete changing of the guard in D.C. several election cycles in a row.
We'll see if they ultimately stand by it or whether they do an end-around, and surely it is only political expediency, but a small cheer for those democratic congressmen and senators who aren't total nut-jobs (acorn nuts that is) for voting "Aye!"

I dread what is to come, I read/heard that most loans will be going to impoverished area students, students that desire to attend community colleges and lots of other mandates. Of course who knows if Obama will even sign this bill, since it will cut off the funds. I guess it is 1 win 1 loss with this one. All those students that haven't already seen what they did supporting this administration will soon find out. It is a shame that ones, like my daughters, will also be paying the price.

Biggovt not telling whole story – I watched the vote.
The problem is – it was attached to a bill where the gov't takes over ALL COLLEGE LOANS – THEY'VE TAKEN AWAY PRIVATE LOANS FOR COLLEGE. ALL GOV'T ALL THE TIME. REPUBLICANS HAD TO SNEAK THIS AMENDMENT ONTO THE EDUCATION BILL IN ORDER TO GET IT VOTED FOR. THOSE WHO VOTED AGAINST, WERE JUST VOTING AGAINST BIG GOVERNMENT TAKE-OVER OF LENDING PRACTICES TO COLLEGE STUDENTS!
Don't hold Nay's against Republicans and don't cheer for the Yay's of the Democrats!

Nancy27 as well as others who have posted similar comments regarding the Student Loan portion of the bill. This is my take for what it's worth. I'd love to hear your thoughts.
First, as one poster above stated, the R's snuck this amendment onto the bill. If that is correct then many of the members likely didn't read the bill. Right?
Therefore, the House has now passed a bill to Defund ACORN which is tied to the lousy student loan portion of the bill. This bill now goes to the Senate where they can amend the bill by removing ALL of the Student Loan language leaving only the ACORN amendment. It would then be forced to go to conference, right? Therefore, if I'm reading any of the maneuvers correctly, my read is the R's in the House wrote the Defund amendment, snuck it onto the bill at the last minute, got it passed which now goes to the Senate. This bill will then for their Senate colleagues to either a) vote on the bill as is; or b) amend the bill. The Senate D's have already gone on record by voting earlier in the week to strip ACORN from receiving HUD money. Right?
I'm sick and tired of hearing people like Bertha Lewis complain how the de-funding of ACORN will ultimately "hurt those they are trying to help".
Bertha! Wake Up!!! You and your organization are hurting the people that you never had any intention of helping in the first place! I have yet to see any story of someone who was just overwhelmed with joy and enthusiasm that their situation had dramatically changed for the better because of ACORN.

It's a good thing to stop funding ACORN and other corrupted organizations in general. However, there should have been more amendments added to create more chaos to either delay voting or withdrawn the bill; or passed with out reading the rest of it.

and of course Sheila Jackson-Lee, 18th Dist, also the HOuston area. Ms. Jackson-Lee's arrogance during her town hall meetings was really over the top. We are near enough to all areas and I will be campaigning for their opponents when they are up for election again.
