WASHINGTON (AP) – The Senate voted Monday to block the Housing and Urban Development Department from giving grants to ACORN, a community organization under fire in several voter-registration fraud cases.The 83-7 vote would deny housing and community grant funding to ACORN, which stands for the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now.
The action came as the group is suffering from bad publicity after a duo of conservative activists posing as a prostitute and her pimp released hidden-camera videos in which ACORN employees in Baltimore gave advice on house-buying and how to account on tax forms for the woman’s income. Two other videos, aired frequently on media outlets such as the Fox News Channel, depict similar situations in ACORN offices in Brooklyn and Washington, D.C.
The Senate’s move would mean that ACORN would not be able to win HUD grants for programs such as counseling low-income people on how to get mortgages and for fair housing education and outreach.
Sen. Mike Johanns, R-Neb., said that ACORN has received $53 million in taxpayer funds since 1994 and that the group was eligible for a wider set of funding in the pending legislation, which funds housing and transportation programs.

Mr. JOHANNS submitted an amendment intended to be proposed by him to the bill H.R. 3288, making appropriations for the Departments of Transportation, and Housing and Urban Development, and related agencies for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2010, and for other purposes; which was ordered to lie on the table; as follows:
After section 414, insert the following:
Sec. 4__. None of the funds made available under this Act may be directly or indirectly distributed to the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN).
Just remember though, this is only the first step, and a very small victory. Those people will come out swinging and swing hard. It is always dangerous to corner a rat………….

the vote was just on adding the amendment, not on the whole bill, which still has to be voted on sent to the Senate, voted on and then to BHO, who will surely veto it to save ACORN.

This was simply an amendment to a larger bill for the appropriations to the Dept of Transportation and to HUD. I'm not sure what the state of the bill in the House is but the same amendment would have to be voted for in the House and much more than likely the bill will go to "conference committee" to hammer out any differences.

(1) an organization which has a pending indictment for or has been convicted of a violation under Federal or State law relating to fraudulent voting in any Federal or State election; or
(2) an organization which employs an individual who has a pending indictment for or has been convicted of a violation under Federal or State law relating to fraudulent voting in any Federal or State election.
There is also another clause that specifically states ACORN or any of it's affiliates,

I am thinking of forming a 501c(3) orginazation and seek Federal Funds. It is going to be called "WET": (White Educational Training). It will be only for white, disadvantaged minorities, especially the average white American male. We wll unite for community organizing events, drink a little beer, remodel the man caves, talk a little politics etc. After midnight we will be on TV, showing some flicks.
