The US Census Bureau has broken links with the controversial community group Acorn, once a close ally of President Barack Obama, after it supported a purported brothel owner with a stable of underage prostitutes.
Acorn employees were taped giving advice on tax avoidance and employment of 13-year-old illegal immigrants to Right-wing activists posing as brothel owners.
“It is clear that Acorn’s affiliation with the 2010 census promotion has caused sufficient concern in the general public, has indeed become a distraction from our mission, and may even become a discouragement to public cooperation, negatively impacting 2010 census efforts,” said Robert Groves, the census director.
Acorn – the Association of Community Organisations for Reform Now – is a poverty action group with over 400,00 members that pushes for better housing, government grants and voters registration.
The group became a controversial 2008 election issue after investigations showed that employees submitted dozens of false voter registration forms, including some with names such as Mickey Mouse.
Mr Obama, however, vigorously defended Acorn, saying last year: “I come out of a grassroots organising background.
“I’ve been fighting alongside Acorn on issues you care about my entire career. Even before I was an elected official, when I ran Project Vote voter registration drive in Illinois, Acorn was smack dab in the middle of it, and we appreciate your work.”

The New York Times reported on July 9, 2008, that Dale Rathke, the brother of ACORN's founder Wade Rathke, was found to have embezzled $948,607.50 from the group and affiliated charitable organizations back in 1999 and 2000. ACORN executives decided to handle it as an internal matter, and did not inform most of the board members or law enforcement, and instead signed an enforceable restitution agreement with the Rathke family to repay the amount of the embezzlement. Wade Rathke told the Times, "the decision to keep the matter secret was not made to protect his brother but because word of the embezzlement would have put a 'weapon' into the hands of enemies of Acorn, a liberal group that is a frequent target of conservatives who object to ACORN's often strident advocacy on behalf of low- and moderate-income families and workers." A whistleblower revealed the embezzlement in 2008. On June 2, 2008, Dale Rathke was dismissed, and Wade stepped down as ACORN's chief organizer, but he remains chief organizer for Acorn International L.L.C

I agree with you Cowboy. However, it isn’t enough to just stop Government funding for ACORN. They have literally hundreds of shell companies all sharing a common address in New Orleans. Obama and his minions in congress will just name one or more of the shell organizations to get the money. Diligent tracing of these shell companies and expose them is imperative.

I find it odd that the International Media has carried this ACORN story; it has been written about in London (England); Paris (Tennessee); Rome (Georgia); Athens (Texas). Why, even the New Delhi (India) newspaper carried news of yesterdays Million Man March in Washington, DC. Every major Main Stream Media outlet is talking about it; everybody of relevance. The irrelevant Washington Post and The New York Times haven't heard there is a story out in the hinterlands circulating among the huddled masses of the Great Unwashed. The fact that they are intentionally not covering these stories, and in some cases, making it worse by attacking American citizens who are either exercising their rights or exposing corruption, absolutely boggles my mind. Their viewership continues to decline, at some point, their ad revenues will take a hit, all while Fox continues to soar in the ratings. Fox is the only real tv network left that actually covers news. All the rest (NBC, CBS, CNN, etc) are nothing more than propaganda channels. It has to be embarrassing to them knowing that international media is actually doing a better job than they are.

When are these people going to wake up and realize that ACORN doesn't do a DAMNED thing for poor people? I cannot think of a single liberal that EVER did anything good for a poor person. Subsidized housing you may say? I say Nay Nay! Take a look at Chicago. The Robert Taylor housing projects, on the East Side-Lake Michigan, on the North-The old Rail Yards, the West -a 10 lane Highway known as the Dan Ryan Expressway, and to the South- The old steel mills (Gary, Indiana!) The projects are completely isolated, so that no-one every leaves and no one ever dares go in. ACORN pushing for more affordable housing? Translation = Lining the pockets of the Senate and House banking committee members through profits made by mortgage companies that bought legislation to increase the amount of loans they write! All for fair housing, when every one knew that not one single person was going to be able to repay their loans, but no worries that is what the tax payers are for! Hence, TARP.

When I travelled this past month to see my realtives in Europe, they were so concerned about my family. They know more about what's going on in our country then we do. NYC ACORN, the group that signed the Atlantic Yards affordable housing pact with Bruce Ratner, and which professes to advocate for the underserved, has been concealing a dark secret for several years. Even after the discovery of the misappropriation of nearly a million dollars by the founder's brother, the national organization decided not to disclose the fact to its own board and continued to keep the brother on the payroll.
NYC ACORN Director Bertha Lewis, who signed the housing agreement with Bruce Ratner, is now interim national director.
A whistle-blower forced Acorn to disclose the embezzlement, which involved the brother of the organization’s founder, Wade Rathke.
The brother, Dale Rathke, embezzled nearly $1 million from Acorn and affiliated charitable organizations in 1999 and 2000, Acorn officials said, but a small group of executives decided to keep the information from almost all of the group’s board members and not to alert law enforcement.
Dale Rathke remained on Acorn’s payroll until a month ago, when disclosure of his theft by foundations and other donors forced the organization to dismiss him.
“We thought it best at the time to protect the organization, as well as to get the funds back into the organization, to deal with it in-house,” said Maude Hurd, president of Acorn. “It was a judgment call at the time, and looking back, people can agree or disagree with it, but we did what we thought was right.”
The amount Dale Rathke embezzled, $948,607.50, was carried as a loan on the books of Citizens Consulting Inc., which provides bookkeeping, accounting and other financial management services to Acorn and many of its affiliated entities.
Wade Rathke said the organization had signed a restitution agreement with his brother in which his family agreed to repay the amount embezzled in exchange for confidentiality.
Wade Rathke stepped down as Acorn’s chief organizer on June 2, the same day his brother left, but he remains chief organizer for Acorn International L.L.C.
He said the decision to keep the matter secret was not made to protect his brother but because word of the embezzlement would have put a “weapon” into the hands of enemies of Acorn, a liberal group that is a frequent target of conservatives who object to its often strident advocacy on behalf of low- and moderate-income families and workers.
Wade Rathke said he learned of the problem when an employee of Citizens Consulting alerted him about suspicious credit card transactions. An internal investigation uncovered inappropriate charges on the cards that led back to his brother.
“Clearly, this was an uncomfortable, conflicting and humiliating situation as far as my family and I were concerned,” he said, “and so the real decisions on how to handle it had to be made by others.”
The executive director of New York Acorn, Bertha Lewis, who has been named director of an interim management committee set up to run the national group’s day-to-day operations, said Dale Rathke was paid about $38,000 a year but that none of that money was used to pay back Acorn.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers Jr. has backed off his plan to investigate wrongdoing by the liberal activist group ACORN, saying "powers that be" put the kibosh on the idea.
Mr. Conyers, Michigan Democrat, earlier bucked his party leaders by calling for hearings on accusations the Association of Community Organization for Reform Now (ACORN) has committed crimes ranging from voter fraud to a mob-style "protection" racket.
"The powers that be decided against it," Mr. Conyers told The Washington Times.
The chairman declined to elaborate, shrugging off questions about who told him how to run his committee and give the Democrat-allied group a pass.
Pittsburgh lawyer Heather Heidelbaugh, whose testimony about ACORN at a March 19 hearing on voting issues prompted Mr. Conyers to call for a probe, said she was perplexed by Mr. Conyers' explanation for his change of heart.
"If the chair of the Judiciary Committee cannot hold a hearing if he want to [then] who are the powers that he is beholden to?" she said. "Is it the leadership, is it the White House, is it contributors? Who is 'the power?'"
Capitol Hill Democrats had bristled at proposed hearings because it threatened to rekindle criticism of the financial ties and close cooperation between President Obama's campaign and ACORN and its sister organizations Citizens Services Inc. and Project Vote.
The groups came under fire during the campaign after probes into possible voter fraud in a series of presidential battleground states, including Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, New Mexico and Nevada.
ACORN and its affiliates are currently the target of at least 14 lawsuits related to voter fraud in the 2008 election and a Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act complaint filed by former ACORN members.
The group's leaders have consistently denied any wrongdoing and previously said they welcomed a congressional probe. The group did not immediately respond Thursday to questions about Mr. Conyers being convinced to drop those plans.

i think we should start calling them "media formerly known as main stream," because they don't even represent what main stream America really cares about. As a foreigner, I feel sad about how this beautiful country is being thrown into a big fire slowly by its own democratic party. I wouldnt want america to look like other corrupt nation out there. I want the america that most foreigners loved. The problem is that people elected like polosi and other notorious corrupt democrats to lay the path of what america should be. I watched different channels to see what are other news out there but the only one that I can see reporting with substance is FOX. What is whrong with the other american news channel or news outlet? Noone seemed to report what the public want to see. This is really sad for the country. I am startin to think that the media probably got some money from the bail out. To possibly prevent them from going bankrupt, This is probably whats happening. These reporters are probably getting money from the administration. This is why we will never see anything bad about this administration. It will never be invistigated and prosecuted. Who are these people that are the monsters in our goverment that all they want to do is take our money we need to find them and kick them out of our government.
