After Census Severs Ties, ACORN May Face Scrutiny of Housing Grants
ACORN Housing Corporation received $1.6 million in federal money to provide housing services to low-income communities in this fiscal year
Conservatives have cheered the Census Bureau’s decision to sever ties with ACORN because it had lost confidence in the group, but the hidden-camera videos that prompted ACORN to fire four workers this week could raise more questions about the federal funding ACORN receives for housing outreach.
ACORN Housing Corporation received $1.6 million to provide housing services to low-income communities in this fiscal year, ending Sept. 30, according to USASpending.gov, a federal government Web site for tracking government grants.
The Department of Housing and Urban Development Grants has given $8.2 million to ACORN in the years between 2003 and 2006, as well as $1.6million to ACORN affiliates.
HUD could not be reached for comment.
The hidden-camera videos, released this week, showed workers in two separate ACORN housing offices apparently helping a couple posing as a pimp and prostitute evade the IRS and apply for an illegal housing loan for a brothel. A 25-year-old independent filmmaker, James O’Keefe, posed as the pimp in the undercover expose, which was conceived by a friend, 20-year-old Hannah Giles, who posed as a prostitute.
It wasn’t immediately clear whether the offices shown in the videos had received any of ACORN’s federal grant money for housing services.
The Census Bureau notified ACORN on Friday in a letter that it is severing all ties with the group for all work having to do with the 2010 census.

Time to cut the funding off on this thing called acorn.
From little acorns do mighty oaks grow.
This acorn however is rotten to the core. Stop watering the seed before we see what this abomination will sprout.
What exactly are housing services? Is a home loan? Information and help on filling out loan documents? Please break down just exactly what the service that they are being paid to render are.
HUD gave ACORN 8.2 million between 2003 and 2006? Let's check ACORN's head honcho's home purchases between that time and how much of that money may have been spent on them.

That's a great question. I work freelance professional services in the financial industry. It's wonderful that I get to compete against an organization that my tax dollars help fund.

The IRS should be looking into ACORN as well.. They should lose their Tax Exempt Status. All the letters that are coming out from ACORN top brass is all politicial thus YOU LOSE your 501.3 C Status!
They shouldn't get any public funds, in fact they should have to pay the taxpayers their money back, and whatever politicians that saw to it that these crooks received taxpayer dollars, they should be investigated as well. Enough corruption in DC, that's the REAL problem in this country, corrupt politicians and the fact that they get away with it ALL the time!

I'll wager, like similar organizations, like La Raza and another org local to my state (RI), Progresso Latino, they use these grants to pay staff who act as go betweens to intimidate local welfare office officials into accepting welfare applications from illegal aliens, they use pressure tactics on mortgage offices at banks, and state and local government bodies to grease their wheels. I doubt that any of that money provided housing to Americans. Rather, it went to salaries and slush funds within and to the national offices.

What chaps me is that I get out of bed every day at 6:15 and go to work, only to have money I work for jacked out of my paycheck, mandatory, not optional, and although I have always known it was being wasted, to have this kind of thing exposed really burns me up. And this is only one pile of reeking crap. There are hundreds of these sponges sucking tax dollars for every stupid and/or blatantly illegal thing someone can imagine.

But don't forget ACORN is just one of a maze of over 200 (two hundred!) "social justice" organizations under the control of Rathke. I have no doubt that right now they are transferring control, people, etc deep into that tangled mess. Even the FBI will have a heck of a job getting it all untangled, and in the meantime ACORN's function will just be taken over by the core organization CCI. Obama's administration will quietly move funding to CCI or some shadow organization and it will be business as usual while ACORN gets chucked under the bus.
I doubt we'll see any significant action until the Democrats are out of power again.
I called the local ACORN group in WA State. I asked about their federal funding, she replied they didnt get any such funding. Then she went on explaining to me that they are like 7-11, how there is a headquarters, and then they franchise out! So she was clueless about how she got the funds to get a WAGE. Then she directed me to Brian Kettering with an "old email address but it will get to him in time" Then I found his phone number in one of the articles on this site and I called him! The Baltimore City State’s Attorney’s Office issued a statement tonight indicating that it may prosecute the Big Government undercover team that conducted one of its ACORN/prostitution stings in B’more.
Yes, really.
The young reporters could face up to five years in jail for violating Maryland’s wiretap laws.
Reader John Muraro notes that the Baltimore City State’s Attorney’s Office was responsible for handling the Zachary Sowers murder case, which I blogged about last year. He was pummeled into a coma by a gang of teenage thugs and later died of his massive injuries. Three of the four remorseless attackers were allowed to plea bargain down to eight years each in jail.

· undercover investigation by the conservative reporter = reporters may serve 5 years in jail
· the animalistic beating of a young man by 4 thugs, resulting in 9 months of suffering and his death = plea bargained to 8 years in jail

Bruce, I would love for the States Attorney's Office to take this on. I think this would be the straw that broke the camels back. At the end of the day Ms. Patricia Jessmy would look like a fool going after O'Keefe and Giles and not Acorn. I will be glad to donate the money I have been withholding from the RNC for their defense fund and any other projects they need help with.

You are so, so right and six months ago I would have said we did not have a prayer .. they were too well organized, too hip, too well funded and face it, entire cesspool of Washington was too corrupt. But like roaches who run from the light, Glen Beck (whose safety I honestly fear for) and our other stalwart conservative voices has them scurrying. The level of government pay-offs, bribes, deal-making in Washington puts some foreign governments to shame, and that, of course, is where we need to attack. Start running some of these sleazeballs out of their sweet ride in Congress and the others will grow a backbone. And I'm talking Republicans too, obviously. I frankly think we could pick the first 50 names in any phone book, send them to Washington, and get a better result than what we have now! Much better! Kick them all out, establish term limits, let them know they can't get away with it because America is watching and we are out of patience.
There needs to be a Federal investigation of Acorn. I can't understand why an investigation wasn't done after or during the voter registration problems before the election. There are just too many questions about that group!! I'm not so sure that Acorn isn't a front to amass money into the pockets of corrupt people in Washington, or to manipulate or fund this country's destruction. What would Acorn do with the 2 billion that they are in line to get? Why is donations to community organizations mentioned in the present health care bill? Is Acorn part of the civilian army being formed that we've heard about? What does Obama need a civilian army for anyway? Think about that one for awhile!!

I would hope HUD will take action against ACORN. I work for an FHA lender. With their FHA mortgage program HUD is cracking down more this year on lenders that are not in compliance based on performance and complaints. This should be the case among their other programs. Anxious to see what happens with ACORN this week.
