ObamaCare Is Already Threatening the Economy
by Rep. Peter Roskam (R-IL)Last week, Democrats in Congress rammed through a wildly unpopular healthcare bill before heading out of town to celebrate the accomplishment. As it turns out, not all Americans are celebrating.

In the few short days since, a growing wave of U.S. employers have come forward to denounce the massive new costs, hidden problems and bureaucratic hurdles contained in the recently passed healthcare legislation—costs that will choke off job creation and be passed on to consumers in the form of higher prices on a wide array of goods and services.
Under one deeply misguided provision in Speaker Pelosi’s health overhaul legislation, for example, companies will face a costly new tax on prescription drug benefits they provide to retired workers. Those benefits ensure high quality drug coverage for retired seniors and spare the taxpayer the full cost of covering these individuals under the Medicare program. Due to the healthcare bill, though, employers will now face massive new costs, while retirees stand to lose their prescription drug coverage.
The legislation hits Illinois particularly hard.
Caterpillar, the world’s largest manufacturer of construction equipment, expects a $100 million hit, while another bread-and-butter Illinois manufacturer, John Deere, faces $150 million in new costs. Boeing, the world’s largest maker of jetliners and military aircraft, anticipates $150 million in new costs as well. All told, benefits consultant Towers Watson estimates that the very companies across America we are asking to create jobs and grow the economy will face $14 billion in lower earnings due to this single provision.
Democratic Leaders have responded to this predictable news with surprise, anger and disbelief. Yet in December, in the midst of the healthcare debate, the Chief Financial Officers of major U.S. employers Caterpillar, John Deere, Verizon, Xerox, Boeing and others sent a letter to Majority Leader Reid and Speaker Pelosi warning that the proposed new tax would “negatively impact both retirees and companies”, raising costs and forcing them to scale back or drop prescription drug coverage for retirees. Democrats disregarded this information as “fearmongering”.
Saddling these companies with crushing new expenses didn’t seem like a good idea during the healthcare debate when many of my colleagues and I opposed it, and now that the Pelosi plan is the law of the land, it’s clear why. Realizing the destructive real world impact of this tax change, I submitted an amendment to the bill that would have remedied the situation, preventing retirees from losing the coverage they currently enjoy and protecting employers from large health cost increases. The fact of the matter is the recently passed healthcare legislation leaves employers with less money to pay current employees, less money to invest in research and development, and less money to hire new workers.
It’s important to remember that it will be months before the public really knows the true cost of this sweeping healthcare legislation, as thousands of programs and regulations are not yet created. Countless new costs will fall to already struggling families and businesses. With a provision that will force up to 2 million seniors off their current prescription drug benefits and cost America’s top employers billions, the healthcare bill is off to a rough start.
An effective approach to healthcare reform must work to improve the current system, building on what works and replacing what doesn’t. Before the healthcare legislation passed, many large employers were doing a good job providing prescription drug benefits to employees. Eliminating this effective approach gets reform exactly wrong and fails to address the many real shortcomings in our healthcare system that urgently need attention, like lowering costs for individuals and improving flexibility and affordability for small businesses.
Creating jobs and growing the economy requires legislation that works with families and businesses to improve the nation’s healthcare system. That’s why we need to repeal the current flawed plan and replace it with reforms that actually reduce healthcare costs.

What's the big deal, the underemployed figure is only at 20%. There's plenty of room to spare <sarc off>
Good thing Comrade Zero has now moved on to the employment issue facing the Nation after his pet project got rammed through. Oh, what's that you say??? Immigration and Cr@p and tax need to be dealt with first?
Wonderful.
If my memory serves me correct, didn't he 'visit' these same companies during his campaign, and got their vote on a lie…?? If they didn't bother to pay attention to the 'truths' that were out there for all to see, and instead turned a blind eye, they get what they deserve!! Now the ONE can go in and take over their failed companies, when they finally hit rock bottom!!
Off topic, but needs to be seen. What a bunch of Progressive swine, the true hypocrites and purveyors of hateful rhetoric and violence.
http://www.youtube.com/user/taylorlcx#p/a/f/0/z6b...
But but but……………..
President Zero, the finger wagging doom prophet, will have this figured out before you can say "Soylent Green".
You all just have to hurry up and die.
It's good to see the business community speaking out —- finally.
If corporate America wasn't in the habit of appeasing the Left all these years instead of standing up to them and defending the free market, we wouldn't be in this bloody awful mess. Heck, if they had made their case a few weeks ago, it might have been avoided.
Don't worry, His Oneness will soon start touring the nation and curing the ill simply by touching them. The hungry will be fed out of his magical bottomless food basket. Everyone will be given a Harvard degree and then everyone will be a lawyer.
The true Golden Days are before us. Embrace the goodness, All Hail The Obama!!!
And you thought the wizard of OZ was a great magician. Look what President "destroy the country" Obama has done in just over 1 year. What will happen between now and the next congress, only God can protect us now
Is there no recourse for members of Congress to stop Mr. Waxman? What would happen if the CEOs of these companies refused this request?
You evil person… Obviously those were right wing astroturfers pretending to be leftwingers. we Republicans are soooo sneaky!!! I love us!!!
Also another sign of the pending end of the world… CBS morning news just announced that Pres O is at his lowest popularity of all time, under 50%. How dare they admit the truth!!! The network must be trying to land the Lipton advertising account.
BO did visit Cat and a number of other major employers but keep in mind no one knew what was in the bill until 72 hrs before the vote. Inaddition with this group of gov thugs in charge it would be death by IRS to object.

Hmm, as the law of unintended consequences continues to evolve out of Odumblo care. We will be aghast at the pending ramifications of passing a bill into law of such magnitude. The consequences that we know already are enough to choke any civilization to death.
This, Odumblo care is the most reckless decision ever made by an American Gov. Done out of greed and power with no idea and worse no care about those who must deal with it.
Damn those who voted yes. May they eventuall rot in hades.
Please make sure that the 25 people who get fired are Obama supporters.
We don’t care that you may believe in Marxist ideologies so long as you understand that imposing them on us without our consent is illegal for one, and by force of deception with intent to overthrow our laws is TREASON.
In time we will have the truth. It's BEST to contain our anger at being lied to and channel it toward RESTORING THE LAW as intended. God Bless the US Constitution. OBAMA is no match for it. nov2… revolution at the voting booth.
Agreed, problem is it is us the citizen who will pay the highest prices.
Wouldn't it be great if one of the"offending" executives showed up and told Waxman "before I answer any of your questions, I have a few things to ask you". "Let's start with an examination of your finances and donors to your campaign, followed by the transcripts of your meetings and e-mails over the past five years".
Corporate America has become a bunch of little girls… don't look for them to stand up to Waxman. It is (and I guess always has been) up to us.
Today the Fed Gov. is going to announce an increase in "NEW JOBS",………………………….
The MSM is going to orchestrate the message of,……………."how this economy is coming back"",……………..
We are still out in the middle of the sea in a life boat there folks,………….Federal jobs hiring,….??????
we are now beginning to quench our thirst by drinking the water from the ocean,……………..
Single payer,………… single employer,……………….wonder how big that life boat is,……..????????
Every business owner and CEO needs to get the word out: buy tv ads, send out press releases, do interviews, when you fire people let them know it's a direct result of obamacare.
Congressman Roskam excellent article. It's interesting that now the bill has the passed some Democratic congressmen who rammed this law through are unavailable for Town Hall meetings due to "Security Concerns".
Like the way your dog goes into hiding when he pees on the carpet.
Hey Nancy! ……..well you got your wish, you passed the bill so we could find out what is in it. We are finding out. Nancy……".you got sum splainin to do." No wonder you brave National Democrat Socialist aren't too anxious to hold town meetings while your on Easter break. The more we read what is in this monster ya'll created, the more we are determined to repeal it. If you want to save your party, maybe when you get back from the break with your Donkey Tails tucked firmly behind you, a reset might be a good idea. Your approval ratings are lower than used car salespeople. (sorry for the insult salespeople)
That should be "STANDARD PRACTICE" for gubmint officials on an annual basis!
“You lay down with dogs, you get up with fleas.” The reason Pelosi, Reid, and his fellow statist did not respond to the letter is because they new this would happen. You must remember profit is “evil,” in the pea-brains of the liberal.
As business in America readjust, “fire your liberals first!” Deliver statist too their blessed messiah.
The Democrat party tombstone will read: I may be dead, but you're still a fearmonger.

They might not have known what was in the bill, but they should have known what was in his heart. Character matters…and THIS is why! Anyone bothering to notice this man-child's true nature could have predicted this with ease!
Sourdough,
Some of it is… But not enough.
I know that if I participate in a "source selection" of any sort I must reveal for "conflict of interest" purposes any holdings or interests I may have in any of the firms involved as prime or sub contractor's. and If I were, for example, own stock in Boeing (I don't) and I was on the Tanker deal (I'm not) then I would have to recuse myself from any comments, votes, rankings, decisions, etc…
I do know that the rules are more stringent for the actual govermnent employees, but I have no knowledge for levels above that.
I've NEVER understood how that @#$^% Murtha could pull his massive earmark rip-offs of our tax dollars for his private airport and a gazillion other things he did…
And I am just a piddly tchnical consultant.
These companies must be based on racist and terrorism. How dare they say anything but praise for this bill. How dare them not falsify their records to hide this negative fact. (sarc)
I can't wait for the circus to come to DC. Not the Barnum and Baily one, the Henry "The Witchhunter" Waxman version on April 29th. He's demanding the company documentation from major American companies called to testify over how they figured out Obamacare would cost them up to a $Billion in writeoffs. Every company in America should show up and stage a Spartacus like revolt against the Witchhunter and his kin.
"Is there no recourse for members of Congress to stop Mr. Waxman?"
Not to put too fine a point on it, but the American voters made that an impossibility in the last election cycles. Are we learning yet, people?
I disagree that the consequences are "unintended". I also disagree with the term "reckless". I maintain that this is all well thought out, calculated and orchestrated. The rest of it I agree with completely.
I saw the crash coming in 2004.
I sold my rental properties at the peak and with the proceeds I paid off every debt I had.
I paid off my residence, I paid off my cars.
I closed out my bank accounts, IRA's and invested in silver and gold bullion.
I built 12500 sq ft of raised gardening beds in the back 5 acres.
I installed photo-voltaic solar, a small windmill and sunk a well. I built a bio-diesel vehicle that runs on veggie oil.
Then I was terminated in Feb of 2009 from a 150K+ Management position.
At 51 I show no net worth except the homestead. I barter for things I need and have been successful using silver instead of "IN GOD WE TRUST" money.
I joined a boutique clinic which has 4 doctors and traded engineering their grid for 3 years of service and have already exchanged services with other like minded community members.
The point is, I'm not paying the government any more taxes than they can extract from me and I will lower my profile even further if they try.
They can't starve me out. They cant force me to hire anyone. They can't make me purchase a vehicle.
I don't have an income so as long as they continue down the path of Socialism, I will not contribute to their coffers and I will never purchase government insurance.
As the government tries to redistribute wealth, we will take our wealth out of the system and play our own game of survival. In our rules, we don't let people with nothing to contribute play. We take care of our own and extend an invitation for others to exchange at a fair barter.
Obama can go pound sand.
Someone tell me how his majesty and his cohorts can afford anything if they keep on trashing jobs-Where will the money come from?-You can only kill off the elderly, at a snails pace. My hope is the co’s Waxman is trashing will tell him to go to hell. Let Waxman rent out his nostrils as a parking lot.
Unfortunately, this will not be the death knell of the democrat party, there are way too many people who believe that what I have worked for was stolen from them or that it can be stolen for them.
The thing that these parasites don't account for is that someone has to be willing to work for someone else's benefit.
What will they do when the productive people can no longer justify working so hard and getting less and less benefits from it, it is near that tipping point.
It all has me wondering, If John Galt was working as an engine wiper, what happened to wiper?
/sarcasm ON
This is actually the democrats attempt to fix Social Security.
Health Care Reform threatens survival of companies due to increased taxes.
Companies can no longer afford their retirees' prescription drug coverage.
Companies cease retiree benefits so as not to go out of business.
Retirees can no longer afford medicine to stay healthy.
Retirees 'pass on' sooner than normal due to lack of medicine.
Due to people not living as long, Social Security pays out less.
In time, Social Security will break even, all thanks to Health Care Reform.
Please do not forget, it was the companies fault for ceasing the benefits.
It could not possibly be the fault of those who passed and supported the Health Care Reform.
/sarcasm off
Just remember, if you blame congress or the president, then you are a racist, puppy beating, kitten eating, toy stealing, all-around bad person!
Just think…We are worried about the when/if they try to take over Caterpiller…..think about Verizen or AT&T….hmmm….more then scary…Hugo Chavez is green with envy…………
Pigs are already offended by Waxman, who to their disgust looks too much like them.
Apparently these same uninformed individuals would never consider reading Jonah Goldbergs' book. Subjective realism is the new enlightenment of these stateist progressive liberals. The truth shall set you free must not apply to these nut cases.
I wasn't talking about them 'knowing' what was in the health care bill…I was talking about them NOT paying attention to EVERYTHING about this idiot they voted for ……
Thank you Congressman Roskam for your very informative article. Many of us knew all along there was more to this monstrosity piece of legislation that didn't square yet despite our pleas of no passage the progressives went against the majority and rammed it through. This is only the beginning to what these radical socialist have in mind that will ultimately bring this country down to its knees. Obama supporters have to ask themselves if perhaps they have been deceived. I am certain most true Democrats are beginning to realize the possibility.
America needs to wake up and come November vote out everyone of these tyrants if we are to save the Republic.
If we really want to understand what makes "obama happy," you could actually say:
"25 of our employees will be terminated ……………………………. to make Obama happy."
Nice article Congressman. You need to make sure and hand a copy to the rest of the Illinois democrat reps and senators that voted for this piece of garbage.
I received a e-mail from Senator Burris' office touting how great this health care bill is. I knew as soon as I saw his name that it was full of crap.
Someone asked, "Who is John Galt?" The answer is, you are John Galt. To expand on that, WE are John Galt. Everyone who posts here with a few exceptions is John Galt. Without the producers the Administration will have a hard time keeping the rabble in line.
Let's hope the Charlie Brown republicans don't blow yet another golden opportunity.
"We are John Galt"
"I'm on strike against the creed of unearned rewards and unrewarded duties. It is right to pursue one's own happiness as one's principal goal in life. I don't consider the pleasure of others my goal in life, nor do I consider my pleasure the goal of anyone else's life."
Once the producers withdraw en-mass and great institutions of labor are garnished into oblivion, where will the Obama worshipers obtain the endless handouts confiscated from those now forced underground?
"piddly technical consultant", keep your head down DM, it's great for us to have your
'inside' perspective.
Well aren't you the little Jeremiah Johnson…. with internet access! This is rich.
cornpone,
We are all in this mess together, and silly me I still believe that un-PC "United we stand, divided we fall". stuff.
Thanks for the good word…
Now look at this… you turned the sarcasm switch off and it still didn't stop the sarcasm. You must have some faulty sarcasm wiring.
Oooooooooh TF, thank you, thank you, thank you for saying that. I'd love to be a fly on the wall,
when these ohugo jr supporters, realize they held their fate in their OWN hands & chose incorrectly.
Let them now pay– WHERE were they before the Vote why did they not come out and tell the American people the real cost of Obama Care? these companies all stood with their mouths shut Now they speak up after it was rammed up our BUTTS— To Bad NOW PAY –
Yesterday , I thought I heard, on Fox, that Freightliner has moved it's production operations to Mexico !!!
This is going to be the future of our nation, these companies will move out of the country !!!!
Thanks obumbler for your excellent insight on how to get our economy up and ruining ,oops, running !!!
I have no pity for the folks who live in Illinois. If their local economies go down the drain they are only getting what they deserve.
They can't enforce this health thing. For those who would rather stay out of the fray, that's okay. There are millions who will simply not oblige. This isn't England or France. This is America and we will not accept this crap.
As we've seen in the past TF, the R's ARE perfectly capable of blowing Golden Opportunities.
If we can push them to power we'll need to stand behind them with out pitchforks at their backs,
or they will go limp in the knees on us, just as they did the last time they held the majority.
Michelle Malkin had an article about the Sparticus event !!!
Sounds like a good idea, overwhelm the"Rat" !!!!
Have no fear. Henry "The Grand Inquisitor" Waxman will get to the bottom of this corporate whining. The beatings will continue until happiness returns.
Last week, as major companies began announcing the preliminary estimated costs of just one portion of the national healthcare indenture, Representative Henry Waxman dressed up in high dudgeon and played the part of Captain Louis Renault from Casablanca. He was “shocked” to find gambling going on in this establishment.
So King Henry is directing his rage at the private companies that must comply with standard accounting rules (or risk jail time and lawsuits, by the way). He is demanding hearings on April 21st because these evil business people are the first to demonstrate the real world affects of this terrible legislation. I do not know which is worse; That King Henry did not know what was in the bill, or that he did and now pretends he did not. To paraphrase the famous Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart: I shall not today attempt further to define socialism, but I know it when I see it. Mr. Waxman’s indignation is great theater, and as usual it is we who are about to pay the ticket price.

The sad fact is, some of these dimocrats are still blind !!!
I have tried to convince my dad and my sister about the damage obummer has caused, they don't want to hear about it !!
They believe he is the greatest president ever !!!!! Go figure !!!
truly love your attitude, Pennyforit…………., my fear is exorbitant property taxes,
to which they will eventually resort. Hard to barter those.
Tax collections
The massive spending binge requires more tax revenues. When Corp taxes fall, they send in less income tax money. Obama didn't know this and his lap dog economists were either sloppy or afraid to speak the truth.
I am certain you don't solicit praise, but I admire you for your stance. Slowly working on my own plan.
The only way they could get to us is to use the army at the point of a gun. They might get some in the army to go along with it, but I honestly don't think they would get enough.
Thanks to the Supremes, they can do it too.
joey, the point is how this bill is going to ruin our economy because employers including big corporations can't afford to hire and without hiring there is no tax roll to support these crazy entitlement programs. cause and effect. besides, if you would go back and read you will learn that several small and large corporations warned congress that this bill would cause widespread harm to business and in effect destabilize employment, etc. pelosi and company shed off the complaints as fear mongering. now we learn they were right all along, it just didn't receive the media attention it deserved, thanks to our corrupt mainstream media.
blame goes to the liars in Washington and to the socialist lobbyist who had a interest in this bill.
How dare you stand in front of those tractors and tell us what's good for us when you probably have never even pushed a lawn mower. Jerk.
I find it poetic that the companies who moved operations to Mexico are now afraid for their lives in the drug wars…………….
214 Days — or — 30 Weeks and 4 Days until Nov 2nd – The Septic Service of America is coming to DC……we’ll be on swamp detail for the next 6 yrs.
One other thing…….ground Airforce one. If the American public knew what we have spent to send this prick campaigning across this country & the world since he took office we would have a stroke. If that number $$ ever gets out Obama will be afoot.
Well that's the problem with Marxist ideologies, that communes only want to be joined by people who have nothing to offer them anyway. They have to be imposed by government force, precisely because force is the only way anyone with anything to offer to said commune could ever be made to join and "contribute"
I hope I’m wrong but I predict that the next 2 elections will be a sweep for Obama and the democrats. The people that read and post on this site are in the minority. A majority of the media in this country is all for the liberals, they have the audience and they make conservative commentators like Limbaugh, Beck and Hannity look like raving lunatics, whether they are or not. Those 3 conservative commentators really could care less; they are all 3 getting rich with what they are saying. All they care is about they’re bank accounts, they could care less what you and I think.
You people that say this and that is unconstitutional had better watch out too. The constitution can be changed. If politicians get tired of hearing that what they do is unconstitutional they will change the constitution, or make a new one. It’s been done previously in other countries and it can be done in the USA.
I guess Pelosi wasn't kidding when she said that the best way to find out what was in the law was to go ahead and pass the law then we'll know what's in it….. Now we're finding out …
Never mind that conservatives, tea partiers and even some in the middle have been trying to tell you this for over a year….
And we wonder why some people get call names…. It seems pretty clear to me
Right after they get their tax payed bail-out.
Thanks for all the comments! FYI, I started on Monday a daily chronicle, for 218 days until Nov. 2nd, on why this health bill is bad for America. Go here to see them all http://roskam.house.gov/218hcr/218hcr.htm
or follow me @PeterRoskam for the daily updates. Also, if you're on Twitter, be sure to start hashtagging your healthcare comments with #218hcr
Thanks all!
Elections have consequences; Obama supporters should be the first to go
Caterpillar, John Deere (nothing runs like a deer………….in the headlights of an oncoming train), AT&T, and all the rest of these company's that are crying about the price of noblamacare…………….need to surveil their parking lots and take note of all the noblama stickers on the emploees cars, and then they have a list of who to lay-off first when the time comes to start paying for the latest entitlement package. Give them some of that hope and change that they voted for. The hope that they can find some gainful employment somewhere, and the change would be their change of address, once they figure out where to go for their next pay check.
Our power will exist only if we protect the election process and voting places from regulators, ACORN hacks and from Ratts with Batts…nov2 may it bear fruit of freedom…
I am reading Atlas Shrugged right now, mainly due to all of the parallels with the present. What you see now is the companies with the greatest profit margin — the greatest cushion — are almost all big into social responsibility and the public good (they can afford to give away a few bucks to curry favor with politicians). Companies with razor thin margins & lots of foreign competition cannot abide by the new rules and are speaking up.
Yes, but it operates on a hand cranked wireless modem……………..
mikatollah……….nice to see you out patroling on a holiday weekend. Happy Easter.

At first, I didn't believe that Obama could be the actual Anti-Christ…but lately, the more he does (I don't listen to what he says), the more he fits the bill. He's already bragging that only he could do what others have tried to do for 100 years, he doesn't attend a church, he is a great talker/speach maker, he is very popular around the world, along with many other attributes that the Beast will have…just sayin…
Waxman is GITMO material…this communist prick thinks he is bigger than The US Constitution…nov2 impeach and arrest his ugly azzzaplate.
"That’s why we need to repeal the current flawed plan"
Thank you Congressman Roskam, and for the love of God please don't back down from that position!!
A little off topic, but I'm wondering what else young Barry ingested while he was at the knee of his pedophile mentor, Marshall? Could explain why he throws like a girl.
He also reminds me of the guy in Harry Potter who played Peter Pettigrew…the guy who USED to be Ron's rat.

Obama KNEW he was destroying America…
Obama on 2/12/2009: "You can measure America's bottom line by looking at Caterpillar's bottom line."
Caterpillar on 3/19/2010: In just its first year, ObamaCare will raise insurance costs at least 20% and cost more than $100 million.
Since Obama became President, an average of 10,000 people a DAY have lost their jobs!
GJP, he has never stopped touring, he doesn't even know what the inside of the oval office looks like. I now await my healing, my cornucopia, my degree, and I want an endless supply of rainbows and unicorns. s/o.
Why didnt these companies provide health care in the first place, and why are they passing off the cost on pensions? Shouldnt these benevolent companies have enacted policies like this in the first place? Meanwhile, CEOs take home exorbitant amount of pay without any recourse to their shareholders and it seems that folks support that.
Because GOP supporters have been sending death threats to them.
ACORN turned out to be a complete hoax. Thanks for ruining a decent organization.
K. You want Bush back in Nov? BC he ruined this country 10 years ago. If thats what you like then you not only are a big government guy, you are a politically charged moron who cant think for themselves. How many times did you vote for Bush?
Amen!!!!!!!!!!!to the umpteenth power!!!!!!!! It was all there for anyone to see that cared to look. The "Ostrichs" have it. Roll eyes. Good call, rckmom.
F America – Team Obama.
Back at you chopper… happy Easter.
This country was founded on capitalism and those who don't believe need to move out of our GREAT COUNTRY CALLED "AMERICA" SEE YA FREAKS.
Dan – First please wake up from your delusion that this illegal act (health care) is "good" for everyone. If you think this is better, please answer the question after you get your bill for health care… Please answer the question after you attempt to send your children to college but you then have to go to the government for a student loan, please address this question after you get thru paying for cap and trade…. You know the Obama "shell game for attempting to "regulate the environment… Last I heard, his highness is going to charge you for that as well. Now when you get your pay check and there's ten percent left for you to pay your bills then tell me how this compares???? Please wake up from the socialist utopian delusion you and many others blinded by the light are experiencing.. I don't know about you but its a tell tale sign when a government attempts to regulate everything from CEO pay to CO2 emmissions to the type of health care you and your family can receive… God only knows what else was slipped into the bill in the darkness of night…If you're not familiar with what his highness is doing, just Google Saul Linksi's name…. This might just change your perspective.
